why do we wipe data/cache before installing a new ROM? what if we don't wipe it?
If you don't wipe you'll probally get stuck on the boot logo or bootanimation. Don't ask me why lol

You dont have to do it,but you will be stucked @boot or you will boot up rom sucssefully and have some lags, crashes so wiping is recommended
Cheers

Installing a new rom through cwm recovery is just copying the files inside the zip to your phone, replacing apps and other files in there.
Your previous rom leaves residual files that aren't deleted or replaced by your new rom when flashing.
So, for example, you might end up with a crucial system app from your new rom, that reads old stored files from your old rom, causing all kinds of errors. This is why you get bootloops.
Wipes after flashing (and sometimes before) are recomended to clear those old files and prevent bootloops.
The exception is generally for updates. If a rom got updated with non crucial system stuff like new graphics, new apps, new files, but without modding heavily the way the system works, then wipes are not needed. An common example of this is when updating nightly builds of cyanogenmod.
To sum up, if the rom you are flashing is very different from your previous one (froyo to gingerbread, stock to custom, stock based to cm based, etc.), you must wipe. If its very similar or mild update, no wiping needed, since it's just like flashing something extra (similar to flashing UOT kitchen mods, system apps, etc.)
well ask this why do you wipe your bottom ?
because it might be dirty
just like the data and cache partitions they are dirty and needs to be cleaned before the other rom comes
I have problem with recovery mode, I cant install any zip file, its always freeze and sometimes reboot and bootloop.
My step:
Install from GB PREROOT SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.tar using ODIN (using GB ROM to avoid brick bug)
Then instal JB TW base XXLSA/LSC (like AllianceROM, RocketROM, Ultimate ROM) still no problem
BUT after installed JB TW base, i cant change my ROM to another JB TW base because always freeze in installing zip file, i dont know why.
someone can help me?
after trying CM on my desire C and being unhappy with the battery performance, i wanted to return to a sense rom. i did a full wipe (factory reset/cache/dalvik) , flashed the rom for revolution sense 5, and pushed the boot.img files to the phone with fastboot. i know the phone might take awhile on first boot, but i thought after 10 minutes something was wrong.
now every rom fails to boot, even if i use the stock rom and kernel, it stick at the white htc logo screen. i've tried several roms, and moved to cwm 6.0.3. the only thing i haven't tried is going back to stock recovery. i'd like to avoid that.
any suggestions?
joe
edit: i did manage to successfully reinstall CM10. not sure why none of the sense based roms will work. i assume the stock rom is also sense based.??
It's because if you install CM mod, you also installed file named boot.img which is kernel file. Unfortunately Stock rom doesn't work with modified Kernel (and I tell it from my experience), so if you want to go back to stock ROM you need to download stock Kernel file too.
So here are some tips to revert back to stock:
1) Boot in Fastboot
2) Install stock boot.img via Desire_C_All-In-One_Kit_v2.0
3) Boot into Recovery
4) Wipe all data
5) Wipe cache
6) Install stock rom
Your phone should be back with stock ROM and Kernel
Hello Guys ..
I'm trying to change my system font(the whole system (not apk ) )
I tried Many times but it's failed everytime , nothing changed I'm wondering where's the problem
Stock rom
stock kernel
Rooted
7.19.401
waiting for someone knows
or can any one make flashable file to flash it trough recovery . I Have attatched ttf font
I don't know why but when I flash modifided kernels as elmentalX 3rd apps works fine however I tried milion time to flash it but it finish with bootloop
As the title suggests I keep getting system ui force closing after I reboot from a fresh kernel install. What's causing this? I've searched around but to no avail
maybe you can give us more detail? like rom and kernel? its lile you saying that you got in a car, but its not moving.. why? the cause can be many reasons, but your details are what will narrow it down.
Happens on multiple ROMs/kernels. Only way I've been able to not is with a backup I've made but when I go to flash any kernel it reboots every few mins.

do you clean install these ROMs? meaning do you wipe data/system before flashing?
It's a CM based ROM using Stock based ramdisk, you need to have something that supports CM ramdisk, only kernel I know of right now is Lean kernel 2.9.2 (CM version) as he decided he's gonna release 2 boot.img going forward, 1 for stock and 1 for CM
