[Q] Developer Edition Verizon Questions - Moto X Q&A

Hi All,
I understand the differences between the Moto X sold by VZW and the Dev Edition in that the latter has an unlockable bootloader and more storage space but I have a few more in-depth questions about the device. I've called and asked Moto, but sadly I trust you guys to give me more accurate answers.
1. Will Android updated come directly from Motorola or will they have to pass through Big Red first?
2. Will VZW bloatware be on the DevEd?
3. Ay other interesting differences between the devices?
I don't really have any interest in rooting my device (tried to get some custom firmware on my PSP100 back in the day and bricked it), and want to (feel forced to) buy a phone on full retail to keep my UL data with promo pricing. Would this be my best choice? Thanks in advance for the help.

1. Will Android updated come directly from Motorola or will they have to pass through Big Red first?
I think future Android OS updates will more than likely be made available OTA by Verizon, unfortunately, despite it being a developer device. I've not heard nor read anything otherwise.
2. Will VZW bloatware be on the DevEd?
Not sure about this question, but I wouldn't be surprised if I saw bloatware.
3. Ay other interesting differences between the devices?
Other than the obvious unlockable bootloader, color scheme, higher storage capacity, there's nothing else that I know of to differentiate the developer edition from the regular consumer edition.

Can you confirm the absence (or presence, hopefully not) of Verizon bloat? If I'm paying 650 for a phone I don't have any interest in tinkering with, I'd like to not have to worry about useless apps sucking up the system resources.
Also, on a slightly unrelated note, I've noticed that the Verizon demo units are a little sluggish compared to the ATT demos. I'm assuming it's either a fluke or the demo app VZW loaded on it. Can any Verizon users confirm the phone is just as fast as the others?

just root and then freeze or delete the bloatware with titanium backup

I don't think we'll know for sure if Verizon apps come pre-installed until someone actually receives their dev edition unit and lets us know. I personally wouldn't have wanted to deal with bloatware either, but since this model in particular does have an unlockable bootloader, rooting and removing these apps shouldn't be too much of a problem.

You don't even have to do that. Just go into Apps and disable it. It disappears from the app drawer.

Are you finally allowed to do so even with bloatware apps? I think I vaguely recall not being able to accomplish this with certain Verizon apps on my Galaxy Nexus.

That's life. $ always wins.
Dunno how old you are, but you remember a certain President saying "No new (or raising existing) taxes". What happened later?. Yeah, raised taxes! yay Just because someone says something doesn't mean they will keep their word.
@OP:
If you have the App already downloaded [i.e. have the .apk file on the phone] you have nothing to worry about.
Which makes me wonder... If you can send someone an .apk file (for instance, an application that is now "paid"), you could give it to them for free, no?
That'd be pretty interesting, considering many of the apps I have are now paid or removed and transfered to paid only.
free -> pay transition
I had all my apps backed up(via astro) on a black g1 I bought on day 1.
I wanted white but but on the first day all they had was black and a few bronze, the wifey wanted 1 in black so I got a white one then swapped my sd card to the white one and downloaded astro to the new phone (after rc33->29 downgrade->JF RC33 upgrade) and installed them all 1 by 1[OT](hey astro dev cant we get a check all on the restore like on the backup)[/OT]
I went to check out the new stuff at the market and all I could see is PRICES, all the good apps got a slight name change and a price tag, how is it protected, my wife would never use most of the geek apps I had on it(i wiped it for her) so would those apps be locked to her imei and I would have to rebuy all the aps I'd want for my white one?
just a tip, to whomever controls this "IF you screw this part up, piracy will be rampant, it has to be fair to the end user and the devs"

I beleive that if an app was free, but now dev is charging for it, we should be allowed to share app since it was not cracked if you have original apk. My opinion.

I think we should be allowed to share the version before it went premium considering that version was released for free and thus there's no basis for claiming losses with the DMCA regardless of a lack of proper DRM protection.
Honestly stuff like this is making me backup a lot of my apps. I have no problem paying for an app that is worth the money, but when there is little or no changes from the original free version it feels like I'm being back stabbed for my support when I see a $4.99+ price tag on some apps. Its also not helping the situation where Google banned dev phones and anyone not on the T-Mobile network from purchasing premium apps. Between Google and this, some people are just setting themselves up to be targeted by pirates.

A little adb pull/install will allow you to get the "protected" apks and reinstall them when/where ever you want.

Sharing the free apk isn't a problem. The one posted is not the paid apk file -- so this should be fine. The problem is, the free one will most likely not be updated if he introduces new features.
As of now they are the same, other than the "will always be free" has been removed.

I agree. It's totally (term applicable to aad4321 and used in a negative context) that the dev did that. I've noticed quite a few apps that I have in My Downloads that have "updates" that aren't any different except for the name.

[Q] Droid 3 ROOT vs XT860

Good day to all,
Does anybody here think that the root access method found by djrbliss in thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234510 would work on Bell's Motorola XT860 4G ?
I'm pretty sure that, to the core, it is the same hardware with a different radio chipset... nothing like what the original DROID was compared to the Milestone in terms of hardware.
I currently own one that I unlocked and use on TELUS, and I must say that it is a very nice upgrade from the Milestone... it just needs root access so I can restore all those Titanium backups !!!
Share your thoughts.
EDIT : Used the following method, worked flawlessly on my XT860. http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?t=3714
Enjoy !
I'm interested in this too, as I'll probably be getting the XT860 for usage in europe
As per Team Black Hat, all current Motorolas running Gingerbread are vulnerable to this exploit. XT860 isn't an exception. I will likely root mine shortly (busy right now).

I just ran the root program on my XT860 from rootzwiki forums, and the process went through with no problems. Not sure if it actually worked, checking it out now.
Edit: Confirmed the root is working for the XT860. Yayyyyy.

Yes, it worked, as expected. Glad we have root now. But be careful - without SBF, we have no secure way out of screw ups, plus altering stuff in /system will prevent us from getting updates. And with the totally broken camera I expect Motorola very soon to come up with one. They will likely break the vulnerability we use too. CWM is the next thing to look on now, as it will be the only way to update preserving root.
Lack of SBF is bothering me...

On another subject, what's wrong with your camera ?
Most Droid 3 cameras look blueish. I've heard a few people complain about how slow/buggy the app is (crashes).

Are you trying to say your's not taking blueish pics?? It is not only D3, but the Canadian XT860 is doing exactly the same thing. Unless I use 3rd party camera software that allows adjusting the white balance, everything comes out saturated with blue.
Also - how's the location tag working on yours - everyone so far confirmed pictures are stored with wrong location tag. Your's snaps normal pics and proper location tags? Maybe you run newer software?
I've not taken a "lot" of pics, but mine haven't been overly bluish, i'll admit.
I don't have location tags or services turned on whatsoever. I prefer to remain... anonymous? *chuckle*
It is a personal matter more. Here is a small example where differences can be seen:
1) Motorola XT860 with Moto camera:

2) Motorola Droid 2 Global (my old phone, which has far from perfect camera, but colors reproduction is not as bad):
The two shots have been taken seconds one after other - same lighting conditions.
Geo-tagging for those who use it is broken on the D3
Sorry for going off-topic - lets get back on topic - I have no doubt Motorola will be releasing an update, rather soon, that addresses the camera issues and given the root power, it is not difficult to mess up the phone and not being able to update it, given the fact there is no easy way back (SBF).
So - bottom line - be careful with the "new power"
Here a video taken from my XT860. I uploaded it from my phone and I hope it kept its original format.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPiAUKpfPn0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
You can clearly see the cool blue tint. In my opinion there should be some white balance option in the camera app but there is none.

I can also confirm that the exploit works flawlessly on the XT860, and can reaffirm the caution for playing around too much. I've messed up my contacts and can't recover it, since I relied on Titanium for backing up my system apps (oops).

fwiw, if you didn't buy one outright before, you probably ended paying more than full retail for it over the lifetime of a 2 yr contract. probably.
and yes, locked BL is a PITA for those who want to play. it's nothing new though, and att apparently has a history.

I think it should be illegal, they are infringing on owners of their phones. Not to their software and at their will. I made the sad sad mistake of picking up an unlocked att s5 and I'm on T-Mobile service since att phones work and I had an s3 running on 5.0.2 for months and loved it so I got this phone with intentions of running a custom ROM because that is what android is all about and after purchasing the hardware I should legally be able to use any software I'd like, not the previous service provider. Does that sound unreasonable?
Depends on the agreement made when buying the phone. Its all very on the second hand market because I'm not sure what the original contract states ... I would not be surprised to find very restrictive verbiage in the AT&T contract, whether enforceable or not.
The true solution is to look to the vendors selling open devices from the beginning and stay with them. Unfortunately this will almost always rule out true leading hardware devices as the prime carriers will lock them up.

Excellent. The only other person besides myself in the world with this variant. I have posted the the boot.img,recovery.img, and build.prop in another thread to have a custom recovery made, but havent heard anything back yet.
I too am having an issue finding anything for this phone. Not to tech savvy myself but I'm sure something will come soon. Black Friday at Walmart sold a ton of these phones so I'm sure it won't be long.
+1 person
Me too man bought on Black friday and looking to unlock this for t mobile . Let's see what happen ??
EDIT:- Is someone is using for other network than straightalk ??
I too snagged this phone at Walmart on Black Thursday right after a hearty meal of turkey and all the fixin's lol. So far, all I've been able to really accomplish on this device is to root it with KingRoot, replace KingRoot with SuperSU and enable tethering. We really do need a custom recovery for this variant. A permissive kernel would be nice too.
I bought one of these phones from black Friday online from Wal-mart the Straight Talk model but online it shows S920C instead of S920L.... Does anyone know the difference?

I don't have the device in hand yet, should be here by the 4th to verify the model number. I posted the link though.

I've read somewhere that in order to update you have to get a new SIM card from Straight talk. I myself haven't test this theory so if anyone is able to update after doing so, please post your results for the rest of us.

If you do find another way let us know. Seems like a pain just to get an update.
So I talked to straight talk and they said that the ota issue don't qualify for a sim replacement. Not to sure how the other people got there's but they refuse to send me one. I will be doing more research to find another way. They also claim that 5.0.2 is the latest version for the phone but the others that have had the sim replaced have 5.1.1
I haven't seen mention of any SM-S920L's on 5.1.1.

Does this mean that LTE phones are unlocked? I always thought it was just a type of 4g just a bit faster
---------- Post added at 12:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:34 AM ----------
After further research I have found that 5.0.2 is the latest for the phone so I am assuming that the others that had this and claim it was fixed with new sim was probably just the timing of the update being available and was only to 5.0.2.
After getting the phone in hand it's indeed a S920L and not a S920C as shown on the Wal-Mart website

Any chance of root being patched on non-exploding Note 7 2.0?

I'm waiting for the new batch of Notes to arrive and got me wondering if Samsung might or could do something to stop root. It doesn't seem like they could or really have the time to worry about it with all the problems currently. Also, with a bit of a bad stigma, do you think they will sweeten any deals to get people to buy these former bombs. Personally I love that Samsung is taking a hit and getting knocked down a peg. I still love these phone but all of the sudden the 1% rooting community has a little bigger effect on sales.
That tiny routing community... against the fees they can make from Samsung Pay. Think about it.

There are August and September Android security patches that the Note 7 didn't get. Anyone short of a Samsung project engineer that thinks they can answer that question is probably full of it.
I think a lot would have to change to make the kernel leak not work. And yes , I don't think Samsung will care about us tweakers still but I still like war ching Samsung squirm just a little.
I think the real question is will Samsung be updating this phone at all or will it become the unwanted step child

No I haven't took the update. I'll let somebody else be brave and try that one. Hopefully jovy puts out an updated rom with the new firmware.
The new update is not rootable and you won't be able to go back to PGC if you take the update. If you really want root i advise you to NOT let the rep power on/ setup your phone.....it will likely grab the update and you'll be doomed. Best practice: Do not place sim in device OR connect to wifi Until you have root.

A little extreme lol... The update is 400mb so on LTE that will still take a bit to download, which you have the option to pause for quite a while (this is what I did while I rooted it). You just need to pay attention to the phone.

Tell that to the people that got the update without knowing it....and the others that think their phone shipped already updated because it happened so quickly. I'd rather be safe than sorry....ymmv
***Also "will take a bit to download" ?? ROFL
I see speeds of 25-65 Mbps @ 65Mbps the file takes about 45 seconds to download fyi...

Yup you'll lose Samsung Pay, Secure Folder and SHealth (if you update SHealth after rooting)
