[Q] ROOT, UNROOT and CSC advice please!!! - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
First post here. I'm still confused although I read a lot, here, on this forum...
Recently I bought Galaxy S III Mini GT-I8190N phone from a friend of mine, but IMEI factory locked to Orange Romania. First of all I deblocked IMEI. Then flashed with the official firmware I8190NXXAMG6_I8190NVFGAMF3_ATL - Vodafone Spain (because my SIM card is from Vodafone Romania, where I live).
1) How can I unlock CSC or change it from Orange (ORO) to Vodafone (VOD or CNX) in order to make possible Kies updates? Actual CSC is MF3 (ORO) - mean Orange - although I flashed my phone with the most recently Vodafone carrier official firmware.
About rooting I read HERE - in case I'm think to flash my phone with Maclaw's CyanogenMod 10.1 20130919. So, the second question is:
2) It's possible to unroot the phone to the official firmware, in case I want to revert to it's original state? And if it's possible then how?
I would be very thankful if you can describe me, step by step, these two problems!

Nobody has any opinion?
No one can't help me?

Where on this forum it's talking about CSC deblocking?! I haven't found anything conclusive.
Again, I have read a lot, but also is a lot of dispersed informations across the forum and I'm not so skilled. Besides that I don't know wich is the right way to do something that I want to do. This is the reason that I put those questions. For those who read this thread of mine and if they are good/skilled they can guide me with a answer or a link or something.
Thank you.

1. Use csc select from play to choose from the csc's installed on your phone.
Be aware of that changing csc also makes a factory reset. BACKUP your apps and data!

Nope. CSC doesn't change when flash the phone. And I already described in first post, I flashed the firmware and CSC even didn't budge.

csc changer app will work if you are rooted.
sometimes a hard reset after flashing stock will change to the new product code if it is not changed.
regarding the unrooting guide, the flashing procedure is the same for all variants but sure you have to download the right stock firmware for your N variant from sammobile or what else...

First of all I wish to thank you for your reply.
I already tried with hard reset soon after I flashed the phone with official firmware of spanish carrier. But nothing.
Therefore, I supposed to root the phone with ClockworkMod, run CSC selector to change my CSC, unroot back with the same ClockworkMod, after that I reflash (once again) with the same firmware? I understand correctly?

Is your opinion and I'll respect that.
But why should I experience? Just because many others do so then and I must risk to brick the phone just because others do the same?! And yes, I do not want to risk (or if I do so at least I want to minimize all the risks). I'm a newbie in this kind of problems and I want to know, to understand and to put in balance as much as possible.
What is the purpose of the forum discussions if not to provide guidance and advice for others in order that they do not make same mistakes, that for example, I did?!
... that's why I put some questions.

Question about Rooting in the US

Hello there! I apologize for being a twit, but I just received my shiny white Note today and am super excited; coming from an Atrix this is a huge upgrade! I did have a question about rooting though. My phone has the N7000XXKKA (2.6.35) kernal, and I've seen the specific rooting tools in the Development section, but I noticed some of the files have the same name but different countries attached to them. Do I need to know where my phone was made? Or can I use any of the files that match the kernel version I currently have? Thanks!

The original firmware on my phone was for Brazil (UBKK1) and I put on checkRom (which uses XXLA4.) Everything works fine.

For Rooting, you need not to care about your region, You have kernel KKA, then you go to this tread, find 'I have kernel KKA'(lower part of OP) download required file, extract n run I am unrooted script.
Thanks! Your thread was incredibly helpful and did the trick. I have a question that's not really related, but you might know: If I install one of the custom roms, will it break the pressure sensitivity of the S-Pen? I do a lot of sketching with it so I don't want it to stop functioning.

[Q] SGS I9003, please assisst me, total noob here

i'm a total noob at SGS and Android.
can anyone tell me what things i need to do to use most of my SGS?
and also tell me about rooting and updating the Android OS, do i always have to do the rooting process everytime i update my Android OS?
i just totally need someone who can guide me from the very start.
EDIT:

Baseband version: I9003JXKP3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-CL694758

i can't seem to find any kernel that is suited for my phone in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879
does this mean i can't root or install custom ROM's?
I suggest you start by reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939752 and

give me a good reason why i should stay with a stock firmware?
what about those Custom ROMs?
some of them are very interesting to try.
i might even re-partition my SGS, so i can learn how to update, root, and install ROM's myself.
i'm not even sure if my phone already has a MOD in it or if its already rooted, i still don't have it now. but i'll have it this weekend.

Each ROM is customised differently with different features. Basically stay stock if you do not know what features you want.
DO NOT flash a any ROM until you have backed up your EFS folder (google hint = IMEI).
If you ask what is your EFS folder you are not ready for a non stock ROM.
On most proper instructions for flashing a rom, EFS backup step is compulsory.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
If you really need a reason to stay on stock:
1. You need to get used to the phone.
2. You never flashed SGS until now.
3. You have not read anything the other forum colleagues gave you.
4. You did not even tried to search the forums before posting this.
5. You might brick the device and then get back here and complain.
Need more? Sorry, but before posting you, and others that want everything on a plate, should use search and read everything posted here.
The "Galaxy S I9000 General" section clearly says: Discussion about the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 (tips & tricks, etc)
Every custom rom has a "How To" section in the OP. Also, every rom has a "What to do in case of" section. So you can try it on your own. There were cases in which the owner hardbricked the device in the first 45 minutes after he received it. So be careful.
i don't know what EFS even mean.
i'm just lazy to read all of it and there's not much i can understand.
so maybe you're all right that i stay with the stock firmware.
my phone still hasn't arrived, i'll just post here again what firmware it has and how should i update it.
btw, one more thing, so custom ROM's acts like a customized Android firmware, is that right?
and thanks for everyone who replies here and gives me their advices.

Again many this has been covered on many threads relating to flashing ICS ROMS in particular. Flashing can result in the IMEI number being over written Your IMEI is stored encripted in a file contained in the EFS folder (IMEI = unique number that identifies your handset on the mobile networks) and then not being able to make or recieve phone calls in extreme examples to random apps downloading from google play or not able to access google play at all.
For more info on this i strongly suggest that you google "backing up EFS folder" and "backing up IMEI"

but there's a custom ROM that has been leaked that looks like Android 4 (ICS).
will there be a Android 2.4?
i never knew that Android needs a lot of work compared to iOS where it just needs to be jailbreak for you to have the freebies and to be open source.
Iphones run on a common HARDWARE
Android have many different versions of hardware ie Samsung, HTC etc etc etc
Each android phone requires the base code of Android to be customised with device specific drivers etc hence the difference between Android and Iphones.
Your wording is exactly that "CUSTOM" meaning not a Samsung ROM.
As stated before Samsungs stance with the SGS 1 is that they will not release ICS for the handset as there is not enough available RAM (memory) for ICS and their Touchwiz apps
i think i want to install a ROM if i get my Galaxy S by tomorrow.
which one is much better?
CyanogenMOD or DarkyROM?
is this link below the instructions on how to root my phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7152078&postcount=2
should i root my phone first?
or should i already go with the install of CyanogenMOD or DarkyROM?
how do i even know if my phone has already been rooted?
I updated the 1st post with more details.
i have my phone, its model is SGS I9003.
too bad Lexrsk can't help me further but i hope someone can guide me in rooting my phone.

There is a thread for the international version but what you need to do is get an apk that changes your "custom" status to "official" then you will be able check for updates. I do believe this thread will get you started. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383484
If you have deleted any apks then it may mess up any updates you take. Or go to sammobile and look for 4.4 firmware for your phone and use Kies to install.
The 9005 can receive it's latest update thru kies, or by going into the settings menu, tap general tab, and scroll down to about device, then system update.
I have only change the md5 file with kies not the rom....I wanted to make the phone rooted not to change the official rom...can I correct this problem with my updates without change the official rom from my phone??? Or is there any app to do that???

I see.
The other reply that I made with the link in it. Follow that link and install what it tells you to install.
After you install it you can make you phone show an "official" status which will allow you to check for updates.
I do not know where the guy in the YouTube video got his firmware.
There is firmware available for the SM-9005 at www.sammobile.com but they seem to be country and carrier specific, I do not know as I do not have that phone.
You may be better off getting instructions in this section of XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3?nocache=1&z=7992070960968063

Good luck and be careful not to brick your phone.

You will probably lose root. It will not reset Knox to 0×0.

Sir I think you're looking for opinions on what to do and that's not what xda is here for. You're not even in the right sub forum for your device. We can talk forever about the pros and cons of custom roms over official releases. If you're worried one bit about knox counter, then do the official release. If you're comfortable with modifying your device and you can follow directions, I recommend you focus all your attention to this sub forum for your device here! The omegadroid link you attached can be found here on xda! I highly suggest you read through the 3000+ posts that users like you made. That might make up your mind for you.

Unlocking/downgrading/flashing/OTA question

Hi all!
I've been reading all day about how to SIM unlock my I9305 UK 3 Hutchison 4.1.2, and I'm getting somewhere, but feel I've hit a dead end with the sources available online and here. If I've missed something obvious I'm sorry! Would really really appreciate some guidance on where to go next.
I need to downgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 to do the simple unlock trick from the phone dialer code, but the first impediment is I can't find any UK 3 Hutchison firmware for the I9305 anywhere, not on any of the main firmware sites (http://www.samsdroid.com and http://www.sammobile.com) or here on XDA forums, or using Google. Neither 4.1.1 nor later versions.
So first off, if anyone knows where to find that then I guess I'm sorted? Even if I found 4.2/4.3 then I think I could downgrade to 4.1.1 using any carrier's firmware, then sim unlock, then flash the newer 3 Hutchison firmware and be ready for OTA 4.4, right?
If not, I need to know the implications of flashing a ROM from a different region/carrier. I'm going to sell this phone, and Kitkat might be coming out soon, so I need it to be able to accept OTA updates, and this is what I can't find clear answers on.
The ROMs I can find are:
non-UK, non-3, stock 4.1.1 firmware at samsdroid.com, a few versions from different European countries, all from a particular Euro carrier.
And from here pre-rooted UK 4.1.1 EE carrier firmware. My reading suggests that the rooting shouldn't be a problem, that an OTA update will unroot it, which is what I want. But they're not 3 Hutchison.
So what 4.1.1 ROM is best to flash, and how do I get it to a state where it will accept OTA updates?
I think that covers it, let me know if anything isn't clear.
Many many thanks you lovely people!
The would be you best bet, I've run it and its great and although its says it's an EE Rom there is no carrier bloatware, in effect stock Samsung
Product Code: GT-I9305TADEVR (4.1.1) (EE UK)
PDA: XXALK3
PHONE: XXALK2

Hi, thanks for replying!
I guessed this was my best bet, but can you or anyone confirm for me, what will be the situation with OTA updates after flashing it?
Thanks!
PS. Don't want to take any unnecessary risks here seeing as I can't find any 3 Hutchison firmware to use as a backup! If only I had that, I could experiment more...
Rooted phone OTA update may well fail on install and phone refuses to boot . See multiple posts .

Oh right, thanks for clearing that bit up!
So what about the issue of using another carrier's firmware?
If I use th EE pre-rooted firmware and unroot, or use the European firmware? Can I then receive OTA updates or do I have to do something or is it not possible?
Thanks

They said 'may' fail, so I guess it's fine for some, disaster for others.

The quote " They said " implies that you haven't used it, so on what basis do you feel experienced to comment...
What's the method you gonna use to unlock the phone? Please tell me.

I think it's pretty obvious from the thread I haven't tried it!
Just trying to interpret JJEgan's words. They cite 'multiple posts'. So I guess the task, when I'm at home, is to search for these posts and decide for myself if there's anything to it. Don't mean to offend you by not taking your word on it, but 1 is a very small sample size!

Multiple posts means multiple users have posted help OTA update has failed usually at the same % in every case phone has been rooted .
Obviously if other multiple users have not had a problem they are not going to post help i don't have a OTA problem due to root .
Searching may not be that easy as many users don't exactly describe a problem in the title .
Me try OTA no i never use stock but i have read the majority of posts on the I9300/05 forum to know that some have a problem with root and OTA .
If it is actually totally untrue better get RootSu to remove it in the sticky .
I have no idea what accusation you think I'm making against Liquid Perfection, and I'm fine with appearing like a newbie, my true identity.
Is there anyone out there who isn't a horrific internet cliché who knows what will happen if I flash a different carrier's firmware on my phone and try to OTA update??
Mod Edit
Thread cleaned.
Please stay on topic.
Thank you

For anyone coming across this in future: I decided to take the plunge and flash 4.1.1 EE software on my 3 network S3, and behold, OTA update worked just fine. No problems so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
