Hello guys,
So I just bought my HTC one about a week ago. I'm.. pretty much in love with it. I haven't had time to sit down and room and customize it and such, but plan to soon.
However, i'm having an issue with it. The phone shows that it is connected to 4G and has full signal. However, it will not load anything whatsoever. Sometimes it works... but most of the time it does not, and I cannot figure out why. I also really hate that I can't manually toggle JUST the 4G on/off without diving into the settings. Waiting for the phone to decide to search for a 4G signal is frustrating. I'm somewhere I know has 4G signal, but the phone takes a long time before it realizes.
Is there anyone else who has these issues or someone who knows what I can do about them?
Thanks

I've actually been having that issue for a week or so. No matter what ROM I'm running. Very strange. Maybe Sprint is "upgrading" their towers....lol. I'm in VA, are you in VA by chance?
D
Maybe someone can answer this better but 4G doesn't have "bars" the bars are for your 3G do you may show full bars but still have a weak 4G signal.
The best way I have found to address this is if your connected to 4G and you aren't able to connect to anything go into your mobile data settings and temporarily switch to CDMA only, or toggle CDMA then switch back to CDMA/LTE this will cause your signal to cycle and you may be able to browse using the 4G.

Datdude, no i am in Texas.
Konfuzion, thats disappointing. Toggling the signals through the settings is really clunky and always ends up with my phone having no signal at all for a couple minutes while it cycles everything. Is there an easier way? Maybe a widget I can get somewhere to do it more quickly?
Also, I dislike that I have no representation of how strong a 4g signal I have. I don't want the phone to tell me I have signal where there is none. Is there a ROM that will show this, maybe?
All in all, while I love the phone, I'm beginning to regret the upgrade. 4g data is very important to me as I use my phone as a mobile modem for work. In places (the exact same chairs) where I had strong enough WiMax 4g signal to do what I wanted, even to play latency restricted games like a MOBA, I can't get the LTE to do anything. I really don't want to have to downgrade, just to keep access to an inferior 4g signal, even if it's more reliable.
Bump for help?
Check out SignalCheck Pro, it will show you your true 1x, 3g and LTE signal strength. I just got my One on Monday and haven't had any 4g issues here in NC.

You can also check your LTE reception by going to Settings->About->Network. Anything above -120dBm RSRP is useable, though if it gets much lower than that, the signal becomes tenuous. I think the lowest I've held onto was -124dBm.
Also, I run into this problem every few days around Chicago. The data connection just seems to stall. The fastest way I found to fix it is to toggle Airplane mode with the widget that I keep on my home screen.

Thanks guys for your responses! I went ahead and bout Signal Check Pro and although I don't understand all the numbers, my RSRP is around -105 to -110 at the moment, so it looks like i'm on the lower end of the connectively spectrum. Hopefully this app will help me better understand when my 4G is and isn't going to work.

Was just messing around with my Nexus One, I have used the *#*#4636#*#* trick to turn on GSM Auto (PRL) Which greatly improved battery life but didn't do much for signal so just now I was messing around went back into the phone info section turned on GSM Auto (PRL) then went down to OEM-Specific Info/Settings and turned off ciphering and wow my dbm went from -101 down to -87 and I seem to be able to hold a 3g signal reliably. If I grasp the phone tightly and intentionaly try to make it lose 3g I still can but holding the phone normally it seems to stay on 3g and doesn't fluctuate nearly as much as before.
Can anyone else give this a try and let me know if it's just a fluke? Never seen my DBM's so low before in front of my computer so seems like something is up here.
I don't see any difference, but I am on 2G right now.
Meh, don't read it if you don't like. It is the first ever thing i've tried that actually noticeably improved my 3g reception so thought i'd share it. If enough people notice simliar increases in 3g reception perhaps it will lead to an official fix from Google. If everyone remains quiet on the subject we will never get anywhere.
Cheers
What's the difference between gsm (prl ) and wcdma that it was naturally set to?

It doesn't search as much when on wcdma. GSM auto(prl) is basically a file that contains a lists of towers in your area that you have access to. So your phone uses that instead of searching all the time.
Here is some more info
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preferred_Roaming_List
and I'm sure there is others.
thanks for the tip. I tired it and my dbm went from -102 to -87 to -93 range.
does having a lower dbm means better signal? I have a place where my 3gs gets 2-3 bars, and my nexus has 0 bars. Kind of disappointing, the the cell radio in the nexus 1 is not as strrong as the iphone 3gs. I'll test the phone later there, and let you know.
Yea, lower the dbm the better the signal, it definitely helps but doesn't alleviate the problem with holding the phone from the bottom. I have since switched to WCDMA Only to help combat that problem. It seems I am able to stay on 3g pretty reliably this way even though I sometimes lose all bars when holding the phone from the bottom it still stays connected to 3g and I am able to surf the web and make calls with no bars showing, it's rather peculiar but it's working for now so I won't complain. If this doesn't work out I think I will end up switching to Sprint and going with the EVO on June 4.
Definitely that's one thing I noticed is with zero bars my phone still makes clear calls and fast data, so I just figure the signal meter is just more conservative than other phones.

So what exactly does turning off ciphering do? Is it worth it for the signal boost?
Ciphering is to keep other people from hearing your conversations, it's like encryption...not a big deal for me as I've nothing to hide and never give out credit card numbers over the phone or anything like that but it might be an issue for some.

I am assuming that Ciphering is purely the encryption aspect ...
Ok, So far I've been loving this phone, no hiccups, no reboots, no problems and loving the battery life.
I live in a 3G only area so I have the phone set to CDMA only all the time. Last night I was having a chat on Google Talk and my 3G dropped, I figured, meh, it's just gonna need a reboot or let it sit for a while to come back. Well it sure didn't.. that was 12 hours ago from posting this. I've tried every toggle known to man, reboots, etc.. Nothing will give me my 3G back. Can someone please help me to prevent from having to call Verizon and go through all the reboot your phone, return to factory settings crap. Then end up with a factory like-new phone when my phone isn't even a month old yet. Wifi is working fine here at work, but I need my 3G.
Mine is screwed today as well... If it takes a factory data reset, I'd just as soon do it on my own. Update to fix isn't due until November... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
Anyone with any real solutions? All the reboots/battery pulls/airplane mode toggles have been performed.
Thanks!
GLiDE
If both of you are experiencing issues today it may be something as simple as a network issue.

I thought so, but other people with smartphones around here on verizon aren't experiencing any issues. So I've eliminated network issues as the problem here.
yeah i think must be a network issue
Yep, same here... I even have a guy in another department in the plant with a Bionic and his is working just fine while mine sits brainless. it's definitely not a network issue for mine. aCk!!!
A new SIM card later... DoH
I have been dropping data connections also and it takes awhile to come back on sometimes. Usually if swith from 3g to 4g and such it comes back but I am getting frustrated with it. Other than that I love it.
Yeah, I'm really getting sick of the dropped 3G too, I can't figure out a pattern to it either, just drops out of nowhere sometimes.
I am having the exact same issues......I have power cycled, done battery pull, etc. Does not seem to be a network issue as 3G can be working fine one minute, not working the next, then go back to working again 5 minutes later. The duration almost seems random in nature. Very frustrating. Other than that I love the phone.
Same as pretty much everyone else. Really intermittent data connection problems. Have gone through 3 handsets so far.

Isn't there a number that can be called that updates your phones tower info?
Just found it. Try dialing *228. Not sure if it does anything or not but I have been dropping 3g too. So far my signal is much stronger but time will tell.
I'm having the same problem, but only at work. The signal fluctuates almost constantly from 4g to 3g with 4bars, to no data connection. Outside I get a stable 4g connection. My T-Mobile phone had a stable but weak signal here.

I thought *228 doesn't work on LTE phones? Mine won't even make the call when I try it.

It doesn't look like its dialing out. However, I am getting a message that my verizion sim card has been updated. So far I have not lost service in places where I would frequently lose 3g. Could be a placebo effect though.
Alright guys here I go I should of posted this on a topic thread I started couple of weeks ago but whatever here it goes and i hope it helps... So I went through 2 hard resets and one new SIM and so far this is he only thing the worked. Called big red and got a level 2? Tech support and since then have had no problems going on couple weeks now... Didn't see anyone mention this in previous posts. go into settings> Battery and data management > make sure you have "background data" and "data enabled" both checked. Hope this helps has for me and i hope I'm not repeating this info

Did the hard resets and sim change do anything? I have looked at my data settings and both items you mentioned are enabled on my phone.
Well yes on the hard resets and questionable on Sim card but data was still lost Week.later again and this new trick has been working since I did the changes going on about 2 Weeks now

Mine dropped today, one week into using this phone. Could be a fluke, but here's what worked: toggled LTE back on (no 4g here), then rebooted. Viola! 3g immediately. I really hope this isn't a constant problem...

Bionic 3g/4g is not working (DROP) "FIX"
After searching around a few days for solution n test many apk and many many methods... Finally found the fix.
Just download "BionicTCP" from market (Play Store) (REQUIRES ROOT), and click on "Large TCP Buffers". It makes my Bionic xt875 3G/4G NO DROP AT ALL.
*BionicTCP : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spirilis.bionictcp

It seems I have very good 4g signal at my work but when I am at home, it gets stuck on either 1x or 3g, according to sprint, there is 4g coverage on my house.Does anyone have problems with 4g not working properly? Its getting me annoyed since I use hotspot at my house. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I've noticed it'll show 3 bars of 4g at home, but if I actually start browsing it drops to 3g. My friend had done nothing but complain about sprints network so I am just assuming it's their problem.

I'm having the same problem! My friends iPhone gets better reception, and we both have Sprint. He gets LTE at my house in my office, but I get 3G or 1X. It's very frustrating. I may return the phone, or leave Sprint altogether, as I didn't have these problems with my Verizon Note 2.

I have used sprint chat with an agent and followed every troubleshooting method and still 3g. I will check the store to see if I can exchange it for another phone or see whqt happens
Could just be a week signal. Note that the signal bars on your phone are NOT for 4G. Check out this helpful write up over at S4GRU could help you determine what is up once you check LTE signal levels.
Here in Wichita, we finally got LTE, so when I got my HTC One, I was thrilled. Sure enough, on any given day, I get anywhere from 5MB to 15MB speed on 4G. On 3G though, even with full bars, I average between .05MB to sometimes all the way up to .5MB speed. Those speeds aren't new, and have nothing to do with my One. Had the same results on my old Evo3D, and E4GT. My question really is, is there some way that I can force the phone to prefer 4G instead of 3G? If my 3G signal is stronger, it uses that, even though the speeds are absolutely terrible.
I have gone in and changed the priority, but through the normal options, the only real choices I have are either Auto, or CDMA/LTE. I have used both options, and see no difference in behavior. Using the dialer menu, I can change it to LTE Only, but of course that makes it so I can't get phone calls.
I really wish there was a toggle to specify which network I want to run on. As it is, if it won't switch to 4G, my workaround is to turn the mobile data off through the toggle, wait a few seconds and turn it back on, then cross my fingers that it will choose to connect to the 4G network.

*#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone Information. There you can set the radio mode. You can set it to LTE,CDMA. That will force LTE and give you 1X for voice calls, but if the LTE signal isn't strong enough it drops to 1X and not EVDO (3G).
I will give it a try now that I am on 4.3. I did that on 4.1 not long after release, and it did force 4g, but it prevented me from getting voice calls. I called my number from another phone, while I was just sitting at my home screen with no apps open, and the call never came through. Tried it multiple times from two areas of town to make sure. Anyway, it is worth trying again. Thanks.

Happens to me too, we just got lte where I work, same thing still happens :/
happends to me also
Glad that I am not alone. Use to listen to Tune-In while on the road and now it cuts out for a few seconds every other minute or so. Sometimes I reach a stretch of road that I have no data. Also turn on Scout and it constantly says network connection has been lost, and network connection has been restored.
All the time the signal bars show that I have service.
Took my phone to the Sprint store today and all they did was a data reset, 786 I believe. This is the second one that I have had data signal issues with, the first one they said that it failed a radio test one and they replaced it. Also my girlfriend's phone seems to do the same thing. Never had issues like this with my HTC EVO LTE. Might actually reactivate and see if I can isolate to the phone verse the network.
Now the question is phone (which I would tend to be the case), or the network. If it is the phone, is it every phone issue or a bad batch?
