Chromecast question - Google Chromecast

Do I need to have a wi-fi adapter on my PC to use the ChromeCast extension with the chromecast? Or is a wired connection enough? Please.. Need a quick answer.
Also.. Was wondering, how do I check my ChromeCasts firmware version, I haven't connected it to the internet yet, but I want to check to make sure I can update it. Thx.
I tried plugging it up to the tv, and it only says I need to setup first, should I do that? Or not take the risk

You need a wireless device to set it up like a phone or laptop. Once setup you can cast from your wired pc if it's connected to one of the Ethernet ports on your wireless router.

[Q] Reverse Tethering a PC to a Tab

I believe it is possible for a laptop to get internet access from a tab though the USB tether, Is it possible for it to be reversed?
Recently I broke the wifi trying to get it into ad-hoc mode, so I can't use the wifi to connect to the internet, marketplace, etc.
Is there a way for me to get a connection from my laptop to the tab?
Im on FROYO 2.2
Thanks,
~404
Do you mean use your laptop as the wifi access point? In that case you will have to replace the default wpa_supplicant file. Search for the thread here....
Not as a wireless access point. I believe normally, you use the USB cable to get the internet on your computer from your Tab Data plan (Correct me if I am wrong)
So, I was wondering if you could use the internet connection from your laptop and forward it to your tab through the USB cable.
I use my tab as a wireless access point several times already-mostly at work because of network restrictions at the office.(Settings/wireless and networks/Tehtering and portable hotspots)
I don't know if you can use USB tethering from laptop to tab-probably not.....
Hi,
You can get a form.of reverse tethering over WiFi by using an application called Connectify (works best on Windows 7). Install Connectify, tell it which connection you want to share, then connect to the created hotbot on the Tab.
Obviously, if your Wifi is properly broken this isn't particularly useful, but Im not aware of any way that the USB interface could be used for tethering in that direction.
Hope this helps...

Yed as agc93 said, connectify shares your pc internet connection through wifi. You need to setup static ip address in the galaxy though.
Good luck

[Q] Help With Smartshare

I have been having problems in using smartshare. My TV which is connected to my router via 'Ethernet' is not being detected. Both the phone(via WiFi) and the TV(Ethernet) are on the same Network.
Is the problem because of my TV being connected via Ethernet? Since both my phone and TV are on the same network shouldn't the TV be detected?
Please help
A long shot, but try to disable all firewalls and see what happens.

Tried it on my computer.
The phone is not detecting the DLNA server on my computer when its connected through ethernet.
But when its connected to my wireless network the phone is detecting the server. Why is the phone not detecting the server if the computer is connected through ethernet?
Went through that.
I discovered it was my access point.
I had three, two B/G did not forward UPNP packets (DLNA is basically UPNP with some extra flavors).
The only N I had did forward those packets correctly.
From my packet inspection it appears that some old&cheap APs (at least in my case, I didn't have any expensive devices to test) don't forward those packets at all. So they are restrained to the same local network.
That means ethernet can talk to ethernet, wireless can talk to wireless.
No eth-wifi crosstalk.
I also have
- Dlink 1522 and it works good (home level gear)
- Dlink 2553 and it's really good (semi pro gear)
^Thanks. But i'm able to use DLNA when my PS3 is connected via wireless and PC via Ethernet. So that would rule out my router's fault doesn't it?

What DLNA server are you running on your pc?
Is it some SONY made software?
I had the exact same problem as you:
running smartshare on my phone and it wasn't seen nor by the tv and neighter by the pc when it was connected on the 5GHz network ( i have two wifi networks, one on 5GHz and one on 2.4GHz, phone can only connect on the 2.4GHz one) .
When I connected the pc on the 2.4GHz network it could see the phone server ok.
Solved by changing the AP.
I don't know anything about the PS3 as I don't have it, maybe it uses some custom software that is able to overcome any limitation.
All I can offer is my own experience
^I tried with Windows media player,TVersity and also Samsung allshare. All three are detected by my PS3 but not the phone and the TV
My router has only the 2.4GHz Option. I tried changng the Wireless Channels but with no avail

Ya the TV and PC via Ethernet and the PS3 and phone via wifi
And all the devices are on the same network!

So the PS3 shares the same access point of the phone.
TV and pc are networked via cable.
You ran your software on the pc that's connected via cable and the PS3 picked it up, while the TV didn't.
Correct?

Yes PS3 shares the same access point. The PS3 detects the server while the TV and phone dont..
When the PC is also connected via wifi then the phone picks it up!

Mmmm that's strange.
But I suspect the AP anyway.
Can't you borrow another one (different brand and/or model) from a friend?
It's really strange.
Have you tried disabling the firewall?
Do you have more the one computer?
Can any other computer see all the others on the network?

Thanks for the reply bro!
I'll try with a different router and a laptop later today
Tried with another router but still no go
Is it a software limitation of the phone ?because the ps3 is working absolutely fine
I don't think so, I have used it quite well after I changed my access point.
I don't know what else you could try unfortunately.
Short of trying a different software (twonky).

If your desktop is connected via Ethernet but has wireless capabilities there is an app for PC's called connectify that can make your PC a wireless hotspot .

What exactly is your setup is your desktop connected by Ethernet to a wireless router, how is the tablet connected.
what is that you are trying to achieve, the more info you can give the easier it will be for me to replicate and hopefully come up with an answer.
regards
my hp touchpad can connect via wifi, but it's a lot slower than a wired connection. i want to try achieving FULL/near full speed download on my hp touchpad, by reverse tethering to the desktop's ethernet connection.
the desktop is connected to the wireless router through a powerline adapter, i.e. wired ethernet and is achieving full speed on its own.
One thing to note is that you'll not notice too big of a speed boost if you are connecting to the internet. The reason being, your ISP has a throughput speed of say 25 MBits a sec down and 5 up (In a hypothetical situation). Your wireless is usually up to 54 (on wireless G), and wired is either 10/100/1000 MBits. However, you are still throttled by your ISP, who runs at 25. So tethering via USB won't net you faster speeds to Dropbox, but it might for local network related things, like streaming from a local PC, transferring files, RDP, etc.
Just a thought to share, hopefully it helps.
Oh, and running through the power line like that is a messy way to do it. Home power is noisy and slows down your network speeds. Just sayin', I hope I don't offend.

bump
This is the thread that keeps coming up in google searches, and since it was never answered, figured its time for a bump.
I´m in a similar situation atm, Ive got no access to data or wifi as Im traveling abroad.
Cyber cafes abound, and id love to use this app as well, but.. i get the same error.
Im surprised as id assumed CM would have all such features builtin. No big that it doesnt, im just not sure how to add it.
Any help?
(and yes, ive tried to get the other method working, but having trouble getting adb to detect the tablet, that method works on my phone, but id prefer a method that fakes 3g, since that other method doesnt work with many apps)
The problem is the to connect anything to the TP USB connector and get it to work needs power injected into the interface (hence the need for Y cables when using an OTG cable). This ends up as so complicated, that most give up and decide to use WiFi tethering. Also, I am not sure anyone has found a way to get the necessary drivers into the kernel.

Connect Chromecast to mobile hotspot?

Like the title says any way to do this, hi I'm new to this forum, was wondering if they're is a way to do this stock or rooted way.any help is much appreciated.
sure. I do it using WiFi Tether on my Galaxy Note 2. Just needs to get an IP from the device. You're going to need to connect a PC to the hotspot so you can set it. You may need another device--PC or mobile device--to sling from.
Do I connect the Chromecast to my pc? Or to my laptop, here's my setup,my hotspot is currently my main internet.so my pc is connected to my hotspot.but can't connect Chromecast while that feature is on.if you could break down a little gladly appreciate it.

Somewhere in the config of the hotspot... Is there an option for "isolation"? If there is switch it off, then you should be on the right road.

Don't see that.so no I don't think so.I have my pc ,my laptop, connected but the only thing showing up for Chromecast is my roku 3.?? There has to be a way for me to set it up.Google makes this so hard.

I don't think Google have made it hard. The thing that's making it hard for you is your mobile hotspot (and I think the fact that it is defaulting to not allowing communication between two devices connected to it: you can try this with two other devices - using ping... If you can ping each device from the other its something other than client isolation)
I'm gunna try thanks

It would help if you could tell us the make/model of your hotspot.
More-generic ones like my CradlePoint PHS300 and Zyxel MWR102 and MWR211 default to letting wireless clients see each other, but do have the option to keep wireless clients isolated (so they can access Internet, but not see each other).

the setup is simple. The idea is that the Chromecast has to get a private IP from your hotspot device.
Since you've stated you've connect your PC and laptop to your hotspot device, and ASSUMING you had them connected to it at the same time, you should be able to set this up. Connect your Chromecast to your TV. Make sure to install Chromecast installation software on either the PC or laptop; you have to have this part to set up the Chromecast. This is what the website directs you to when you connect the Chromecast and it does not have network to connect to.
Next, open the Chromecast software. It will search for the Chromecast. The PC or laptop will do a temporary direct connection to the Chromecast. You'll see some kind of WiFi SSID with Chromecast. Let the software do thing. You'll be prompted to enter the SSID and passphrase for your hotspot; the one you use to connect your PC and laptop. It'll do some setup instructions. If everything goes well, the Chromecast software should prompt you it's ok to use the Chromecast. And the TV with the Chromecast should show something about what SSID it's connected to
If not successful, the Chromecast on the TV should say something about the issue. I've gotten couldn't connect to the internet, but that was an issue with the router of my WiFi software. At home, I had the same issue, but that was firewall issue.

[Q] Possible to connect AP or Router?

Hi all,
My first post after reading for a long time.
(Quick question)
Im wondering if anyone has or knows if its not possible to connect an AP or a wifi router to the Turbo through using the USB port?
(Long version)
My family has a condo at the beach and previously to owning my Turbo I used FoxFi full version to broadcast a wifi network for Netflix, my iPad, the Wife's iPad, etc. While not all at once this worked pretty well and saved the expense of purchasing access to the building wifi.
As you all know Foxfi wont work on the Turbo. But supposedly it still works via tether through the usb port. I work in IT so I was thinking, why not connect a driverless OTG so I could patch that to an AP or a older Netgear router that I have. Was thinking I would just plug the patch from the OTG to the "internet" port on the router and let everything connect to that.
While I know this is not a desireable solution, its one that would work for my one situation until someone figures out how to root the Turbo.
Thoughts?
I'm not so sure if that would work but I know PdaNet/foxfi has a feature that turns your laptop into a hotspot. I've tried using it and it's rather hit or miss but I think that's because of my laptop. It would atleast be worth a shot. It's called "wifi share" and can be found in the menu that you use to connect to your phone on your laptop.

Interesting. My theory was more like use a USB to Micro usb adapter to plug into a driverless USB to ethernet adapter. Then plug a patch cable from that into the "internet" port of a home wifi router. After that turn on FoxFi and use it via the USB tethering option.
Again I understand this is not a portable option, nor as simple as turning your phone into an AP at the click of a button. But for my next beach trip this would be pretty handy.
Before I buy the ethernet adapter, does anyone know if the USB tether to the router idea would work?
From what I know for any kind of internet sharing apps such as foxfi, you need the app or program on both the turbo and the receiving device. Those types of apps dont actually share internet to the device directly but through the connected apps. Think of it like cable in your house. You need the modem or receiver to translate the signal to watch it in your house. I would love this to work but I don't think it will.
