[Q] Does Kowalski Kernel Really Apply 32 MB RAM Hack? - LG Optimus 2x

I believe that pengus77's Kowalski Kernel is probably the best thing happened to P990's development.
But I have a query. In its features, it's mentioned that this Kernel applies 32 MB RAM hack, but I've observed that available RAM to the system stays at 374 MB which is same as it was an Stock ROM.
So what am I missing here?

there are 2 versions of the latest kowalski kernel (M1 stable/126 experimental) - ramhack one and the one with "norh" in the filename (or no-ram-hack)...
pick the right one

Yeah, I know. I have installed the one with the RAM hack (the one without "norh" suffix). And not only that I've tried almost every Kernel version experimental or stable released till date.
Thing I am saying is that, isn't the available memory mentioned under settings supposed to increase by 32 MB from 374 MB that's already available by default in Stock or Custom ROM (without RAM hack)?

Stock ROM had 342 MB ram and rest was reserved for graphics. So 32 MB ramhack has been applied here.
Flash NoRH and you'll see only 342 MB ram

Isn't 128 MB reserved for GPU by default? 342 MB + 128 MB doesn't add up to make total 512 MB. 374 MB + 128 MB somewhat does go in the vicinity of 512.

Reserved video memory is 170 MB.
342+170=512
Out of that 170 MB video ram, 32 MB is carved out and used as system ram.
So you see 342+32 = 374 MB

Check out the specs column of the wikipedia page for LG Optimus 2X. Out of 512 MB, 128 MB, not 170 MB, is dedicated to GPU by default.
Again maths doesn't add up.
My best guess is there could be some memory dedicated to baseband etc but it would be great if someone knowledgeable in this matter could clear the confusion.

Hi all,
Do have any hints how to compile pengus77 kernel from source? I can compile it using Linario toolchain and build zImage, but it always stucks on LG logo upon boot.
Thanks!

[Q] Need more RAM

Hi,
I'd like to know which ROM is capable of starting up and run with less memory? What I mean to ask is, I want a ROM that starts up with < 150mb of ram and provide me more space for running my downloaded apps.
I've tried MIUI, CM9, etc., all starts up with 300mb utilized! Gives me only 30-50 mb space
I know my device is getting older Waiting for S3
Thanks,
Senthur.

Hi, does the android version makes any diffrence to you?
If it doesn't i will probbably suggest you to use GamerzRom.
the problem is that the base kernel of Gamerz is SemforeBM and you can't youse 720P quality while taking a video.
however, you can always use another kernel, though with BM the performence are awsome.
Try myics
I usually have 150 mob to spare

I think Slim and Infinitum are best for RAM on ICS, GamerzRom best on GB.
For GB gamerz rom, i'm in v9 and when i start the phone it use 150mb of ram (200mb of free ram) for v10 it will be more
on ics (slim) you have kernel with 402MB ram
for my phone i still prefer gb and gamerz rom
Use ICSSGS RC4.2 + Devil2 0.72 XL kernel i got 200-210 mb free ram with this config.
Just use a stock froyo rom (2.2 or 2.2.1) like JS8.
JS8 is probably on of the best roms for our device, fast and stable.
Don't forget, if you flash another rom do a factory reset to remove previous garbage from other roms.
Use Slim Rom, always have 200 mb ram free for apps.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I dont mind about the Android version. GB is okay with me. But does Gamerz ROM gives more of usable RAM? How long are you using?
Thanks again!
Currently i don't use this rom because i got tired of messing up with roms and decided to keep my phone as stock as possible.
Before this decision i used the phone for months and i was quite happy, the performance is good at any level (Games, OS Smoothness), i don't remember any app that i couldn't use. Also the network and wireless levels were very good.
Also it's the stock rom with highest quadrant score if i'm not mistaken.
But keep in mind, each type of user has it's rom, so it depends from person to person.

Only ICS kernel with swap is devil 0.73 test version. Swap feature works great for many guys.
if want the ICS try slim sics or Aokp + devil 2.72 xl kernel
I'm om Aokp+ devil i have free ram with some apps running between 190 to 160 free ram
and if wanna Gb try gamerz i think the best GB free ram Rom
Thanks guys..
Thanks to everyone who replied.
I've now installed Slim ICS 3.1 (from WeUI) and happy about the performance, as I get solid 150-200 MB free RAM memory always. I will use this for 2 weeks and then update here about the performance with apps/games installed.
Also, I will install below ROMs suggested by you guys.
Gamerz
ICSSGS + devil
Stock froyo JS8 ( hopefully, I won't like it)
In Slim ICS, have to try (1) Devil kernel, (2) a kernel with swap (devil again - 0.73)
AOKP + devil
Thanks again!

RAM problem in JB ..

hi guys ..
why the used ram in jb 320m/404m (about 84m free)
(team remice-jb v3.0.1 ) ??
( in gb about 220/385 ..) (about 165m free)
i have more lags and every thing slowly in jb ..
whats the problem ??
up up
You should try Cm10 by pawitp. it's less ram hungry. and that's kinda normal, since gb needed at least 192 of ram and jb needs 256

Swap partition

Swap partition is a little faster.
Swap file is less harmful for sdcard life

What's dc2sd? I never heard that!
Anyways ,I prefer Android's native app2sd (move app to fat partition @android_secure folder)
Cause when you create 2nd ext 2 or ext 3 or even ext 4 partition ,Android use it for cache too so your device will slow down when working with it.(internal memory is faster than a class 10 memory card!)(setting ext partition is hard & takes time)
I will never use ext partition!!!!

dalvi cache 2sd and app2sd = dc2sd
i dont know why my phone not responding sometimes(not wake up screen bug).
my setting
sd card speed(class 10) set to 2048kb (read speed score 30mb per second)
122 to 748 cpu freq
undervolt
swapiness 100
need help...is app2sd problem?

Oh s**t!!!
U set swapiness to 100??????????
Reduce it to under 60 percent!!!!
SD card is really slower than RAM memory so if you are not on ics or jb don't use swap (except for gaming times)
Don't use dc2sd,we don't need it (just an advice)
Don't over clock more than 729 (decreases x8's life)
This is my CPU frequency on minicm9:
UnderVolted min19mhz Max600mhz
Use tweaks like seeder lag nullifier or supercharger v06

As I said even a class 10 memory card is slower than RAM
Swapiness 100 mean kernel will use swap
Just like ram memory (ex.70mb ram + 40mb swap is used but 100 mb of ram is free)
Swapiness 0-50 means kernel will use swap when ram memory is full.
Swapiness 0 means kernel will not use swap
I just explained them simple, search android Swapiness on Google for advanced information
