[Q] Can't factory reset Moto X - Moto X Q&A

I wanted to perform a factory reset because I keep getting really high Android OS usage on my phone. However, when I went to settings -> backup and rest -> factory reset, it didn't reset my phone; it just rebooted again. Then I tried to reset it by booting into recovery, so I powered up the phone holding the volume down button, scrolled to the recovery section, pressed up to select it, and it just made my phone restart again. I don't know why my phone won't let me perform a factory reset, could someone help me out? It is rooted and has titanium backup and greenify installed, but that's about it.

PwnMyMoto hijacks stock recovery. You'll need to uninstall it to get the recovery back to factory reset.

don't think you can uninstall pwnmymoto because it already uninstalled itself after it rooted your phone. You will have to flash stock frimware on the device using RSDlite. tutorial found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515
for high android os usage it might be because of the wifi router you are connected to fyi. try running on no wifi for a day or a night or whatever and see if that doesn't change. There seems to be an issue with some routers that cause the usage to be extremely high. I'm having the problem currently because of my wifi router.

you can always flash the fw for your device onto your phone. you may not be able to flash an older version of a fw for your phone but you can always flash a current version. if you use rsdlite to do a full factory reset it will work. you just can't do a factory reset through the recovery mode in your phone because pwnmymoto hikacked it so its no longer there.

if you have a locked bootloader and you want to do a factory reset or flash a rom you need to install Safestrap
here is a link to the thread all about it

HTC One keeps rebooting

So. I factory reset my phone via TWRP after using this zip to remove some bloatware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250403
Now, if I reboot my phone, it continuously reboots until I reset my phone again. This means I can't access fastboot or recovery without losing all my data again...
I am running an ATT HTC One M7 on Android 4.3 with Sense 5.0 rooted. I'd really like to NOT have to reset my phone entirely, as I have some personal and work data on my phone that can't be lost. I could always back it up, i suppose, but I'd like to avoid the situation altogether IF possible.

try turning off your phone and go into boot loader (holding power and volume down at the same time for 10+ seconds) and then recovery. Try reflashing your rom or restore using nandroid backup
Did you flash a custom room or is it still the official one ? if its a custom room it might be related to the kernel you flashed.
Try flashing a compatible kernel.

It wasn't a ROM. It was just a script to remove the bloatware.
And I tried going into recovery and reflashing. the only thing that worked was resetting the phone.
Any other ideas? I've got the phone running, but if I reboot it, it's just going to do the same things again.
I agree that it may be a kernel issue. However, if you have the phone running either back it up on a PC and factory reset. BTW: can I ask which ROM you were running that you felt the need to flash that to eliminate bloatware? Because some Roms have aroma installer which can aide in removing those problems.

X2 Black screen

Hello,
I did a reboot and now I can't use my phone anymore. I see the Boot animation but after the Boot up, the screen just turns black. I receive notifications and active display is working, also I can start my camera with the twist but I can't take picture because the touchscreen does not respond. On active display or the power off pop up, the touchscreen is working. So I did a cache partition wipe but this hasn't fixed my problem. The strange thing is that after a couple of frustrated reboots, the Boot animation changed to the old animation with the spinning world. I want to reset the phone via recovery but first I need to backup my data. I have very important Data on my phone like whatsapp log or Photos and videos.. I can't connect my phone to the computer because I have a pin... How I can Backup my data and what caused the black screen?
If your bootloader is unlocked you can flash TWRP. TWRP has the ability to decrypt userdata if you have the password. I don't know if it can decrypt the moto x or not, because TWRP only officially support ASOP type encryption, if motorola uses a different technique for encryption it will say the password is wrong. If it works you can browse and backup files from TWRP recovery.
If it says the password is wrong or you don't have the bootloader unlocked, then you are SOL and have lost everything.
In either case doing a factory reset will hopefully fix your issue.

So I did a factory reset now. But I stuck in Bootloop, i just see the M logo. How I can fix it? And no, my Moto X is stock like out of the Box.

After the factory reset bootup takes longer than normal, how long did you wait?
If that is not the case, what model moto x do you have? For example mine is xt1095. Also what version of android do you have? 5.0, 4.4.4, 5.0.2, 5.1, etc?

same issue today
also have the same issue, black screen after reboot. moto voice, active display/notifications are responsive, camera too when twisting the phone. moto voice says "unlock your phone to continue" but i currently don't have any screen locks or anything, just swipe. i have a pure edition running on 5.1. Skeptical about a reset since the phone is still responsive.. tried looking for other fixes, but looks like this issue is just coming up today...
This exact same thing happened to me. Updated to 5.1 about a week ago via the OTA. Wiping cache did nothing. Diagnosing it as a software issue, I attempted to sideload the official 5.1 OTA that's posted elsewhere in the forums. It came back as installation aborted, so I gave up on any hope of keeping my data and did a factory reset. Now all it does is bootloop, sometimes settling on the prone android no command screen for a little while. I can boot into recovery and the bootloader, but thats it. Really hoping someone can come up with a solution. XT1096.

I've waited about 30 minutes, in this time my phone just bootet into the recovery by his self. I've contacted Motorola and I'll send my device to repair.
It's a xt1092 with 5.1 RETDE.
I personally think that this issue is caused by the Boot animation update.

You still do everything through terminal. You have to cd to your folder that has adb and fastboot enclosed, usually platform-tools. Instead of starting each command with "adb", you'll start with "fastboot" and you'll be flashing these while your phone is at the fastboot screen.
The full image files are in the forums, and all the commands you'll need, in order, are posted in this thread earlier
I have found that some time the fastboot from Moto wouldn't recognize the phone. I, then, use the mfastboot-v2 found somewhere around this forum works great.
Me too faced this problem few days back. Only option left to do was factory reset.
Read below just to go through of what i faced:
( I had gone through bunch of articles for restoring my data but i had a pin lock because of which while connecting to pc it couldnt detect phone.
Other things i tried includes flashing lockscreen bypass zip via stock recovery. There i faced signature verification failed error because i had done it through stock recovery where it doent let u toggle signature verification on/off as in CWM. )
And for those who wants their data back , i found many articles of data recovery after factory reset. But it needed your device to be rooted. All you have to do is after factory reset dont make use of phone and after rooting you can recover your phone by software as EASEUS android recovey, Dr fone android recovery. Thats all .
I am too facing this issue as of last night,, I have the verizon version (complete stock, no root, locked bootloader) and I am not sure how to go about fixing this without losing all my data.. I tried wiping cache but it did nothing.. Can anyone provide some kind of troubleshoot guide please? It would be much appreciated.
A friend of mine is also having the same issue.
I tried the 5.0 image and it won't flash.
I'm locked and without root. Is it even possible to flash even the factory images? (And yes, I've tried to go to the Customer Portal for the Moto X and that isn't giving me anything)
Edit: Finally got it to flash the stock image. Didn't help. Factory reset fixed things.
Note: I had this problem and was able to fix it through a factory reset, but I had to do it through minimal adb and fastboot. The bootloader factory reset option didn't work.
I am having the exact same issue. Has anybody had a luck resolving it short of a factory reset?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a bunch people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?

[HELP] Moto X won't boot to OS after strange happenings...

Rooted, Bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed, Xposed Running. 5.0 - I did not yet update or press update ever, If I have ever accidentally allowed it to begin downloading I kill the download by deleting the file using SDMaid.
I got home, had problems with other devices, phone was on about 40% at this point. I remember hearing the phone reboot, I noticed it went into TWRP, which was strange, I restarted system > powered up > lockscreen > restart to twrp with no interaction. Phone is now getting low 21%ish. Fix permissions - because used to be the all out fix on my other devices.
Same thing again > straight into twrp.
I notice that some scripts have been ran in the twrp console. Something along the lines of Victara_en_US.zip Some red scripts I assume saying failed to update.
I assume the phone is now too low to power up.
It shows no sign of charging since leaving the last twrp reboot.
Green light in top speaker shows when attempting to power up with usb charger plugged in > nothing else happens.
With charger unplugged from phone I see my modified logo screen and the moto planet spinning before phone turns off completely. This process now repeats.
Anyone have any idea what the hell is wrong with my phone?

Get your phone into TWRP and connect it to your charger and let it charge to at least 70% Use Advanced Wipe in TWRP, select Cache and wipe that. Then see if your phone will start normally. Somehow you have downloaded the update file and it is trying to run automatically. Since your phone is modified, the update fails (and nothing is updated or changed.) The update file is in /cache so wiping that should correct the problem. You should go ahead and update to the Stagefright patched version of your ROM so you aren't having to deny the factory update all the time.

Phone still boots to a black screen. I don't understand why it would download the update let alone attempt to install it, I religiously deny the update. Also why would it have booted up normally then forced itself into TWRP? :S
What can I next? I dont mind wiping using fastboot as I managed to take all my files off the phone via twrp.
This happened to me a couple times but wiping the cache AND the dalvik cache fixed it. If it still doesn't work, I hope you have a backup because you are going to have to wipe the system and data next. Sometimes these updates like to link themselves to all the phone's partitions, and in that case you should wipe everything and restore your full system and data backup in recovery.

I wiped both the first time I tried it :-/
I don't have a system backup as a far as I am aware, need to check main pc for something like that. I had a lot of trouble with no signal after changing my phone to x1095 so I could root it etc. Just hope I don't have the same trouble again. Can i reinstall the system through twrp? Or do I need to flash via fastboot?
Whats my best option, system files wise, for fixing this?

Am I able to flash anything other than the stock 5.0? Last I checked I had converted whatever I had to the x1095. I remember everything being easier on other phones...
Yes, you can, just make sure you have the right file for the job. They are usually about 2 gigs, and they take forever to flash. Note that once you flash the file, your phone will be as if you just bought it from the store, but it always will boot if you have the corresponding build.

In TWRP, make a backup now even though it may not be useful depending on what the problem is. Then, use advanced wipe in TWRP and wipe data. If the phone will boot now, something got corrupted in data and you'll just need to set your phone up again. If the problem continues, you'll have to flash your system image. How to do this varies with the model of your phone; some models have TWRP images, others need to use fastboot files. After you flash the new system image, you can either just continue to clean setup the phone, or you can try to restore only data from the backup you made previously.

Thank you for your help, as well as anyone else who helped me. I now have a running phone on 5.1.
How do I gain root from here? My superuser app updated and now tells me I have no binary, despite telling me to flash something only 5 minutes prior.

So you don't have root? I would suggest rooting using towelroot. Go online and search "towelroot" click on the first result, click on the lambda to download the apk, and install it. You can then open the app, and press "make it ra1n" to root your device without any reboot needed.
I had root prior to wiping and installing the 5.1 update that was linked to me. Towelroot gives me the phone not supported message.

Towel root does not work in 5.1.
To root just flash TWRP. Start TWRP. When you exit TWRP it will ask you if you want to root it. Simple.

As in you can't get it to fastboot?
I left it to charge for a while, then took about 5 minutes attempting the power button volume button combo to restart and get it into fastboot.
I believe that it's something like:
Power + vol down until the phone screen flashes/green light goes off
Then
Still holding the power and volume down
Hold the vol up too
Then release the power still holding the vol up and down.
That's what worked for me. It's literally the most awkward phone I've had go button combos.
I think vol up from powered off works too.
If you mess up just hold the power and vol down again.

Root Factory Reset?

Hi i am wondering if i am able to factory reset while being rooted? Or will my phone brick?
I feel like my battery has been draining a ****load for some reason.. I have to charge twice a day now compare to 1 charge will last me more than a day.
I am on 5.1.1. On N910T3
From what I understand trying to factory reset on your phone will always fail via stock recovery or through settings on stock Rom. I think you need to use Samsung Smart Switch OR download the stock firmware from Sam firm (My favorite ) OR Sam-mobile. r
Yes you can factory reset while rooted. Worse case scenario is you'll have to re-root.

All the times I have tried to factory reset while on stock touchwiz firmware on my s3, note 2,3, and 4 (while they have been rooted) fail. When I would use stock recovery or the settings menu to attempt to factory reset, I would get a fail message, then the phone would shut off.
When I turned it back on, everything would still be left untouched on my phone. All my apps, files, etc would be in the same place.
So in order to perform the equivalent of a full factory reset and return to full stock firmware, I would use smart switch or download the stock file and flash via Odin.
That's just been my experience with the Samsung series.

Factory reset is merely returning the device to its out the box setup. That can be done from the settings menu.

My Galaxy S4 active (AT&T) is bricked, tried to restore it

This is my backup phone so I don't care for the data that is on it and just want it working again. It was rooted before and I needed it unrooted in order to download an app that was blocked by root detection. I tried uninstalling the root using Super SU in its settings, when I restarted my phone it just freezes at the AT&T white screen.
I'm still able to go into the boot recovery menu, I tried putting on the I537UCUCOC7 (5.0.1) firmware found here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2629093). I downloaded it, extracted the zip, and renamed the file "update.zip" and put the file on a microSD then in the recovery boot menu I went to install from external and selected the update.zip. It sorta kinda looked like it accepted it but I get a red error message about the sideloader and I'm still stuck at the white screen when it boots.
What else can I do from here?
P.S. I already tried wiping the cache and data/factory restore options and that didnt work.
Is there anything else that can be done?
I restored my phone to 4.4.2. How can I install 5.0.1? When I search for software updates it says theres nothing available even though I know it can go to 5.0.1 cause thats what I had before it bricked.
Please share how did you restore when I only able to boot into recovery and clearing cache and factory reset does not help. Phone just stack on boot loop
