I really hate the sound the camera makes when taking pics in CM6. I would prefer just a "click" or camera shutter type sound, not the loud beep it makes now. I know I can mute the sound on the phone, but I don't necessarily want no sound, just a different one.
I tried moving the camera ogg (whatever the actual name is) from the UI folder, rebooted, took a pic and the sound was still there. Then I noticed something interesting, the one I moved isn't even the same sound But I don't mind that one...so is there any way to make that one my camera sound? And where is the sound file that is playing when I take a pic if it's not the one I moved from the UI folder? I am running CM6 with DarkMod if that has any effect on anything...
The file you're looking for should be in /system/media/auido/ui/ called camera_click.ogg or something similar.
You said you removed that though?

Yup. Well, I moved it completely out of the UI folder onto the SD card, then rebooted, snapped a pic and it was the same sound, but the camera_click.ogg and the actual sound are not even the same when the file is in place. I am confused...

Ahh didn't notice this before, are you referring to a noise that sounds like the volume rocker up/down noise? The beep you hear is the auto focus, you can either turn auto focus off or turn focus to touch to get rid of it, otherwise I believe that beep is generated by the camera app itself, if I have time I'll take a look at it.
Edit
You can see it here on Github. Do a text search (ctrl+f) for "tonegenerator" and you'll see where it initiates - focusing.
Should be a relatively simple edit for those of us who know how to compile from git or smali edit. I'd do it if I had the time to, but unfortunately as of right now I have wayyy too much do deal with :/
Brilliant! That's what it was. Switched to touch focus and the annoying loud beep sound is gone. Thanks.

Can anyone suggest why I no longer get the camera shutter sound? It doesn't work with the stock camera app (I mean the one that comes with the ROM I'm using) or third party ones. I can't find any settings disabled.
I recently had a repair done at Samsung which involved replacing the motherboard. I didn't test every single setting and function when I got it back so am tempted to assume it is related to the repair but I could be wrong.
The camera is rooted and I'm using the Ultimate XXLT4 JB 4.1.2 v6
Thanks in advance

Camera shutter sound adendum
Has no one else come across this? Most posts about the shutter sound are about how to turn it off so I guess my problem is unique. I checked that the /system/media/audio/ui/shuter.ogg file is there. It is and I can play it manually with the stock music player. Other than that, I've no idea how to fix this. All othet system sounds and alerts sem to work ok.
I'm still hoping some expert out there can help.

Hello. When you mean you don't get a shutter sound, does that mean that in camera/setting/shutter sound already enabled but no sound? please note that music or notification volume level (I forgot which one) also play a part. If your volume level is 0 or very low, the sound will not be heard. This was a trick to eliminate shutter shound back in the days when the option to disable is not there.

Thanks for replying. This was the first thing I checked.
There's no option to enable/ disable shutter sound in the stock camera app I'm using and I imagine this is why so many people were asking how to disable the sound. Can't recall if I ever saw that in the settings menu. I also have an app called CameraPro which has an Enable Shutter Sound. This is enabled but , makes no difference. It's possible I'm using an older version of the stock cameras app but it seems to me this is not the cause as it makes no difference which camera app I use.
Thanks again.

I managed to fix this by installing the jobnik_Camera_Note_JB_Mod_v8_cwm.zip.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863362
Now both my camera apps have shutter sound enabled. Still don't know what happened since the previous version of the app worked fine before but that's often the way with computers: just happy to fix the problem in the end.
Thanks

Hey guys, a quick advice for you concerning the noise during video capture/sound recording:
Recording sound(via app or video) didn't work although I wasn't rooted so all system apps should still be there. I thought it was some kind of bug. Then, by coincidence, I found a little app that I seem to have deactivated which is called "Sound recorder"(or similar). Just activating it once again solved my problem. It's no dedicated sound recording app, it won't show up on the app drawer. It's needed by sound recording and video apps.
I hope it may be helpful for somebody who did the same mistake as I and wondered why the sound in video captures was...just not there
Cheers!
unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. video recording after activating the app still no go
thx for the suggestion though
Hello all,
Can someone point me on how to disable annoying shutter sound for camera? Tried deleting the shutter.ogg file, but no success. I'm on Dr. Ketan ROM and in ROM control, there is Screenshot sound off, tried that, but no success either.
Note 9 has different CSC partition and I can't activate cscfeatures.
Please.
I have no root to use this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dc7.SilentModeToggle
Works o both Note 8 and 9 fine
Another work around is put the phone on silent, then open the camera app and voila.

Depends on the region/country. For most (like my AT&T version and your Verizon), it is in the camera settings at the bottom. But there are some countries (I believe Japan was the 1st) that does not allow the shutter sound to be disabled.
I have dr. Ketan ROM and there is no Shutter Sound in camera app. Is there a way but not with system sound off, I need notifications?
I would like not to try any app because an app installs a service and I do not want to.
Not an option for me, US Cellular

I have downloaded Open Camera which has Shutter sound off, it's a workaround, but it's not original camera that is better.

I don't use system sounds. I prefer my device to be as silent as possible. If I want to hear fake computer noises I can watch a movie.

I just use the Macrodroid app, I set it up that when I launch the camera it's turns off the system sound and then when I exit the camera it turn the system sound back on.
You can get it in the Play Store, just click above on Macrodroid.
How to turn off shutter sound on camera
On your sound " system " slide to off
You can download Silent Mode Pro app from the play store to silent the camera shutter.

Routines (part of GoodLock) or Tasker does the job for me. Switching mute<->sounds if camera is running. Routines has some bug and sometimes lowers ringtone volume to 1 (min. volume) so there's a risk of not hearing phone calls. I stopped using Routines and went back to Tasker where I already have several other tasks.
Routines are still good for maintaining some Samsung specific tasks (playing with blue light filter, power saver, and some automatizations).
FooxMagisk Alpha[ v0.2.2/SIZE]
×WHO:
FxM is aimed at Android users in search of an easy way to capture system or internal sounds (systemless-ly), and on Android versions past Lollipop. By installing my module users will no longer need to worry about background noise from their environment.
×WHAT:
FooView, an app by fvalpha, comes from the same dev behind ES File Explorer nearly a decade ago. Development is ongoing, but in essence, FV supplies the user with a range of controls outside of screen recording. Be sure to visit their thread.
×WHY:
Some time ago someone inquired about the possibility, which led us to trying other means before quitting. Recently I found FV and gave it a spin. Plus, others are frustrated by the absence of native recording on most devices. Whilst I've experimented with other techniques on Oreo & Pie, none come close.
×HOW:
The real reason you're here! First of all, in order use this module I strongly recommend Magisk 18+. It was used on 18, so can't guarantee the results on older versions. If there's demand, a test for 17 can be made.
×Prerequisites:
- Magisk 18+
- Grab fooView Play Store
- Download/Install FxM module from below
×Links
- All Releases
×Steps:
- Follow above
- Reboot after installing
- Check app info (foo can now be disabled, instead of uninstalled)
- Open foo -> Settings -> Advanced settings -> Dev Mode -> Enable "root for screenshots" -> Grant -> Enable "Record internal"
- Enable little MIC icon BEFORE recording
- Adjust media volume to < 40% (Volume bug on some devices)
×Credits:
- @fvalpha - Developer of fooView
- @topjohnwu - Magisk
- @ahrion - Unity Installer
- @Zackptg5 - Unity Installer
×Bugs
- Using high volume creates a tick sound on certain devices
- If Module is installed FIRST the app will crash constantly
×Revision History
v0.1a - Jan 18, 2019 - Initial Release (Unity v3.1 + 0.9.9.9)
v0.2.2a - Jan 21, 2019 - (Unity v3.2 + Perms fixed)
v0.2.3a - Jan 25, 2019 - (Removed unnecessary perms)
×Compatibility:
- LOS 15.1 (8.1)
- AICP 13 (8.1)
- AICP 14 (9.0)
×Devices:
- Le Pro 3
- Moto Z2
- Whyred
- Pocophone F1
Further testing is necessary to extend this list
×FAQ:
Q: Can I hear speaker audio whilst recording internal sounds?
A: No, not at this time. And likely never. It's a limitation in the API.
Q: Sound doesn't play when recording!
A: This is normal. Maybe simultaneous internal/external recording will be doable in Android Q.
Q: Fooview crashes!
A: This happens when Foo module is installed before the base app.
Q: Why is there no sound in my recording?
A: Turn on the microphone icon that's shown in fooview.
Q: Is root needed?
A: Yes!
Q: Watermark in videos?
A: This can be disabled in settings.

Did you follow all the steps? In foo there's a permission section, first 3 need to be enabled when installing the app. After rebooting only floating window is needed really.

Sound from the speaker stops whenever foo records. Make sure mic is enabled in the screen recorder, there's going to be a little mic icon. Like here:

No, because Android doesn't support system recording natively. You'd have to record your voice from another device and merge the waveforms. It's not possible to record MIC & system simultaneously, unless it's done on a Samsung or Xiaomi device.
This is meant for people that DON'T want sounds from their mic. Internal recording isn't possible without root after lollipop, and game audio from a microphone sounds awful.

It's a limitation of the the app at this time (fooview), not the module. I don't know if the Dev will add that functionality in the future. There's another Android app that can record internal sound, I'm trying to create a module for it too.

With school it'll take time for me to get around to it.
Only some Xiaomi phones feature it natively. I've heard of it being available on older devices like the Note 4.
Sorry to ask this basic question. Where is best use of this module. Can this be used alongside screen video recorder so that WhatsApp video calls can be recorded.

1. It's meant to record system audio. My buddy needs that for games. I guess there are other uses like recording calls, but I never considered it.
2. I've never tried this on WhatsApp, nor any app like it. I don't know if WA even allows recorders.
It only needs to be installed, nothing else it required.

There seems to be no way to achieve this on any Android version after LP (internal + MIC). Samsung, Xiaomi, and LG feature native recording in their skins so it's a different story. For example, my sister's Stylo can do both on Nougat.
For unknown reasons Google doesn't want apps to contain this functionality (also true of call recording apps). It's odd since Apple's position is the complete opposite...

The microphone is there. It's needed for internal audio, the speaker won't output any sound.
I prefer this one for its ability to alter FPS (25 - 60).
