Why not just on lock your bootloader through Motorolas website, put on a custom recovery, and just flash to root your phone.....

[Q] What can I do with a VZW Moto X if I purchased today?

Sorry, a few too many threads, so I want to check my understanding of what can be done for Root, ROM upgrade, etc with a Moto X if purchased from Verizon today...
As I understand it, the Verizon Moto X hasn't received any OTA updates yet, as such...
I could still use PwnMyMoto to gain root
Its possible to keep root for the camera OTA update if/when Verizon pushes it? (based on -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466191 it looks like yes, is that correct?)
Its likely not possible to keep root as future OTA updates come out
Its very likely that 4.3 may not receive root.
there is no chance for a boot loader unlock on the retail Verizon Moto X (so I wouldn't have to buy Moto X Dev Edition)
Is there a stable way to tether without being rooted (unlimited data plan), at least as stable as Wifi Tether for Root was on my Bionic and Thunderbolt?
The Dev Edition of the Moto X (not available from verizon store, but rather Moto web site), can easily be rooted no matter what updates come down (just unlock boot loader, flash custom recovery, install SU from custom recovery?)
Is that correct?
thank you.

Kit Kat Update and root

I just sold my us cellular moto x and bought one on sprint. Im going to wait for the update since vzw got it today, after updating can I just bootloader unlock and flash su.zip. that's what I did on my last moto x, and the sprint version is available to bootloader unlock as well

Buying from at&t

If I am reading everything correctly, the att version is xt1097 and has a locked bootloader. There is no way to unlock the bootloader and there is no root method for a moto x bought from att. Am I correct in this assumption? :crying:

Yes you are correct. The original Moto X (carrier locked) bootloaders can be unlocked using "Sunshine", there is a potential it will become available for the 2014 version in the future, but I don't think it will be anytime soon.
Secondly, there is no reason to get the AT&T version because rumor is Motorola is going to enable all the AT&T supported LTE bands in the Pure version: http://www.androidcentral.com/moto-x-pure-edition-xt1095-may-soon-get-more-lte-bands

[Q] Flash another Stock ROM on Verizon Developer Edition Moto X (XT1060dev)

I am planning to buy a Moto X Developer Edition from Verizon (XT1060dev) and it's sim unlocked; in fact I have ordered one and waiting.
Can I flash Stock 4.4.4 or the latest 5.1 Moto ROM from any variant (be it XT1053) on to my XT1060dev. I am planning to unlock the boot loader. So I guess it's possible. Still, I need to confirm before going for it as I have seen many warning posts regarding downgrading etc.
Is it possible?

Having issue with 4.2.2 JB. update need help

Just got my Moto x Verizon branded and came with 4.2.2 JB. For some reason when I hit the update it says I'm on the latest firmware. Any idea what's going on here. Im currently situated in Dubai but not sure how that would have anything to do with it. Any help?

yes, update moto update services via playstore. I dont own a vz X but I suggest you check your bootloder unlock option if interested before updating.
Yes root and unlock it now, because 4.4.4 root isn't quite ideal yet.

Did you buy it used? If yes, then its possible that the previous owner rooted and disabled the OTA update check. Especially if this is NOT a Developer Edition for Verizon.
Now, if it was purchased new, or the original owner didn't disable the OTA update check, then its likely because you are not on Verizon's network. I've seen this happen on my BB Z10, galaxy S4 and S5, and my Moto X, when running wth my t-mobile sims or on wifi. They will always say either no update found (90% of the time), or Update service not available (10% of the time). I must put my Verizon SIM in to download the update.
Since both the Developer and Non-Developer XT1060 for Verizon use the same ROMs you can download and manually flash the SFB/FXZ files from Moto Directly... -> HERE If you have the Non-Developer XT1060 and you want to unlock the bootloader, do NOT flash anything newer than 4.4.2!!
Use the link in my signature about the Risks of Downgrading to confirm your phone's bootloader version to get a better understanding of your phone's state.
IF you want to root and disable write protection going forward, you need to unlock the bootloader, and you do NOT have the developer edition for Verizon, the only option for that would be to use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader BEFORE you upgrade it to 4.4.4 or higher. For more... see HERE

I got it brand new sealed box cost approx $122 16GB, so no chance of it being rooted. I'm glad that it's still JB, read that part of 4.4.4 being not unlockable at the moment. So I just made the payment for Sunshine now waiting for either of the devs to wake up and send me those sweet digits to unlock. The phone came with a Verizon sim card in it but I get a message saying its unrecognizable but that's okay It's customs roms all the way for me from here.
