[Q] Display verified by serial / build number - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Finale update 26-12-2013: People, I have returned my Z1 and returned to a HTC One for now. I have seen over 20 Z1 devices over of the last two months and I find it insulting, even outrageous, that Sony uses it's customers like this and asking a premium price for it. Thanks all for your help on digging with me to this screen issue. My personal conclusion is that you are much better of getting a serial starting with CB**** instead of BH**** (except the first and second serious, BH900**** and BH901**** respectively). See you around people. Thanks.
I received my pre-ordered Xperia Z1 last Wednesday. Experiencing both the Screen of Death (see thread link below) and a very high saturated display with horrible viewing angles (see thread link below). I returned my unit last Friday. I spent a few hours in the store, together with a specialist, comparing the displays. Since I did not know the screen of death was a bug at that moment I did not pick up a new unit yet and I ordered a new one from a new batch / shipment due next Thursday.
We both verified that the displays had a lot of variations. Both the yellow hue was seen (see thread link below), but also brightness / viewing angles varied a lot! (see setup below)
I am trying to determine if a good phone, meaning a correct display, can be spotted based on the serial / build number. I am starting this thread to collect the build numbers together with a verified good or bad screen. Please post yours in the comments and I will summarize in the second post.
Our setup was:
1 Xperia Z
1 Xperia Z Ultra
1 Xperia Z1 that was shown as a demo model in the store
3 Xperia Z1’s fresh out of the box (first batch in The Netherlands)
Basically only the demo model and one out of three fresh Z1’s was better than the Xperia Z Ultra. All were better than the Z. The difference between the Z1’s were seen by the naked eye and were verified by 4 to 5 persons.
Screen of Death (link) (youtube). A user posted that Sony said it is a known issue and working on it (link).
Display and viewing angles (link)
Yellow hue (link) and color adjuster (link)
PS. I have been a long time user of XDA (10+), however I have lost my account due to a 2 year side track of another brand.

Serial / Build numbers
It seems that BH900**** till BH902**** has good displays. BH903**** till BH909**** has flaws. I verified this via my reseller, who was willing to let me examine over 20 units.
Also... this was seen on build up to 14.1.G.1.534. Please post if your display problem is solved using the new version!
Below the responses in multiple threads.
Clear white, no yellow hue (serial starts with)
(6x)BH900**** / BH90C****
(2x)BH901****
(6x) BH902****
(1x) BH906****
(1x) BH907****
(3x) BH908**** (although verified via reseller that colors and brightness was NOT the same, it was worse)
(5x) CB512****
Yellow hue, colors off and / or brightness lower (serial starts with)
(4x) BH903****
(4x) BH904****
(2x) BH905****
(1x) BH907****
(1x) BH909****
(1x) CB5****
Last update : 16-10-2013 15:31

I have a BH904***** and it has the yellow hue.

I have a BH908 and no, it does not have a yellow hue, I know this because, I returned a Xperia z1 because of the black screen of death that occurred, and that z1 had warmer whites (yellow hue) compared to my current one, also I checked out an Xperia ZU. That also had warmer whites similar to my first z1.

A guy in the 'display lottery' thread has a BH901**** Z1. He forgot to specify is the display was good or bad. I just asked him and will update the second post with his reply.

I have a BH902F****. From my experience with the phone so far, no yellow hue to be found.

BH901W Serial - Purple - SIM free - purchased 27th September 2013
No yellow hue. Off centre viewing, similar to what others have described.
It's not bad, but I've seen much better. It's a significant improvement of the previous Z screens I've seen.

me BH902F***
but don't feel of poor viewing angles

BH904F*** and have the yellow hue.
btw it seemed to be fine until I updated to build 14.1.G.1.534, now the display got this "warm" touch

I have BH906... its not listed.

Got my Z1 today (after the provider bodged my order). Anyhoo.. it's a BH908B**** and it looks totally fine to me. Whites are white and the viewing angles are ok, though not super.
Dsmeg revealed it's a (Renesas) Sharp panel.

Posting this here as well. This picture from the Verge seems to have captured the yellow hue problem. Look at the Z1 on the extreme left.

BH908 No yellow hue
Viewing angles are ok
No issues of note so far
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I don't have anything different to notice about the screen, looks ok by me and the viewing angles doesnt know why it is important is also good.
And didn't saw my serial on here but it is one brought in Holland and start with BH907.
What really is dissapointing of the phone is the Wifi signal and I hope it is fixable via a firmware upgrade, paying €650,- for a phone you would think this would be out of the box good.
Also I have sort of cracking sound on the back, when I push around Xperia it gives a cracking sound and also on the upside, didn't saw more people comlaining about this??.

Had to replace my Bh908 device as it just just randomly stopped giving me signal so got a BH90A and it had the yellow issue got it replaced now have a BH903 and I think it has a slight yellow tinge need to compare in a shop but compared to the z the greys look abit yellow

The SGS display - is it just me, or..?

Hello guys, i just received my SGS this moment and came from a Legend. I'm a bit disapointed about the display - not that its very bright and clear, etc. But i can see dark pixels in the edge of white vs. black, gray, etc. Is it because of the big screeen versus the resolution, or? On my legend, i didn't see this. :-(

did you set it on max brightnes? At first I thought it wasn't bright, but then I changed it to max and I'm very happy with it.

Yes i did. Try with something ex. orange on black and you will see a lot of black pixels in the orange color, making it "dirty"... :-(
The screen has higher pixel density, and is brighter than the Legened one. They're both made by Samsung, but the SGS one uses newer screen tech. Are you sure the screen is worse than the legend one?

Picture would really help
from what i've gathered, it seems that you'll have to use your phone for a bit before the screen "adapts" to heat and the color should come out nicely.
idk how true is that though.
I made a similar post a few months back. I had trouble reading black text on white as it looked fuzzy. Now it is nice and sharp but I am not sure if that is because I installed a better font and set it to auto brightness (full was way to much) or if the display has "bedded in" so to speak. Either way it's fine now.
It is the Pentile pattern used on the Samoled display.
I feel it too.
If you come from an LCD display, and if you have good eyes, you will perceive the effect.
The Pentile pattern uses double sized Red and Blue subpixels, and normal sized Green. So, you have just half the pixels with a Red subpixel, and half with Blue.
Thats why you see a checkerboard-like pattern on the screen.
The contrast and black level is way better, but you have this annoying effect on the colors.
Paulo
Funny enough my sgs doesn't seem to have the checkerboard effect whereas my old omnia hd did... Either that or my eye sight is crap.
It's a brilliant display. But its not quite as crisp as an LCD.
The black levels are insane though. I struggle to find the edge of the screen if its black!
The "checkerboard"-effect is still there after one day of use, but i've gotten used to it and don't see it anymore. I wish it wasn't there, but what the hell...
I'm not sure that the checkerboard effect that you guys talking about is the same as what appearing on my screen. I doubt that why when I view 5 color images (atteched below) in full screen. I cannot see smooth colors like showing in LCD, they look more like some texture on the images. Is that called checkerboard effect? If that because of pentile matrix, why this checkerboard isn't show in a smooth pattern? Or this is poor quality of screen production? Because of not only checkerboard I notice, I also notice big vertical gray tint band color on my screen as shown in below picture.
Do you guys see some in yours?

instead of using pictures display to test the screen
use the app called "color flash light"
then you can choose any colour to display on the full screen
and you will easily be able to test your screen
there is also a test screen mode using secret codes

Thanks for your suggestion. I have tested my screen through *#0*#. Bright color like RGB display great on my screen. I just doubt that why gray-like color such as my attachments displayed not quite smooth on SAMOLED screen. I also notice unsmoothness gray when pull down notification bar as well as gray bg that some website used and even gray bg that some apps use. I just doubt that.
Anyone else please give me some feedback? When you try to view the above images on your phone I suggest you to set brightness to the lowest for easy noticible. You will see what am I talking about? I want you guys to share your experince with this screen or at least answer me that this is called checkerboard effect or not?
Thanks and cheers
I too have noticed that flat colors around the 50% brightness mark look like they have a pattern.
I'm not talking about screen brightness, but image brightness. So if I look at 50% gray, or one of the images provided above, my screen looks like it has vertical lines breaking up uneven hues.
I have tested my screen and these are not any sort of problems that dead pixels would cause, but rather some sort of artifact. It almost loos like an interference pattern, but it's fixed on screen. It almost looks like burn-in, except it's in unusual areas and shapes.
Any idea what's doing this? Full brightness colors, like red, green, yellow, and white have no such problems.

Thank you for your feedback. At least someone understand what I'm talking about. I think we're in the same situation and have the same suspicion about the strange pattern showing on dark color especially dark gray color and the vertical uneven hue color line or band as appear on my screen.
By the way, if you could provide a picture of your screen, it would be very nice.
It's called banding. Look into voodoo, it has better color calibration. I used voodoo for 2 weeks and the color definitely looks better. Currently not using it because I"m waiting for Froyo.
Yes, I have this too, but I think it's normal for the screens. In actual use you're not looking at straight 50% gray a lot so it doesn't really bother me that much

Thank you for your answer and your link. Actually I think the weird pattern is common in every SGS but the banding one is not. For my case, I have claimed for a screen replacement and waiting to changing it on Monday. Actually I have Samsung replaced my screen for 5 times but with different reasons. Of cause, I think that Samsung has poor QC. Most of the screens that passed my eyes, I also saw banding, some big some small. So I just want to share my experience here for others as a reference.

Washed colors in Nexus 7

I just noticed today that the colors on my new Nexus 7 are faded to a blueish tint. One thing is sure, compared to previous Nexus the colors are duller. This is definitely an intensity scale issue, IMO is a little off. I read also a report from ZDNet where they did a deeper screen analysis and blame it on "Asus incompetence" (their words not mines). I took a screenshot directly from tablet and a picture with the actual screen, so you see the difference.
SCREENSHOT white vs. ACTUAL blueish white

Playing with the brightening settings did not do anything fancy. The whites have a blue tint and the blues are washed. I know that my previous tablet had the beautiful colors you see on the left screen. Not the new one.
I think for now I'm going to refund the tablet and wait for a better batch that will solve all current issues. I'm definitely sold on pure Google experience, for now I will use my Nexus phone which is an amazing device. I'm a little disapointed Google did not contracted Samsung for their tablet as they did for the phone. We would've had perfect tablets, even if the price could've been higher.
September 19th, 2012 Update:
The new C8O tablet I have now has beautiful colors, with automatic brightening enabled. The white is actually white, no more blueish tint.
OLD blueish white vs. NEW white:
(both pictures were taken on a complete dark room with automatic brightening enabled)
Although my n7 doesn't have your screen issue. I do want the colors to be more vibrant. It would be nice if a developer made an app to adjust saturation (like PicArts saturation photo effect) and allow it to be applied throughout the system to make screen more vibrant.
There's a rumour that they are getting new screens which should hopefully fix this issue. I don't know when they're supposed to be in production.
I got my replacement tablet today. Is a C8O and has the usual minor lift as well some bezel spacing:
I was able to fix everything easy, using the warping technique. The screen is impeccable, no more flushed colors.
Didn't you get a refund on your old tablet?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Yes, I purchased the new one today from Futureshop.
This is interesting as we have two Nexus 7's and one of them (it's a C8O) has the same blueish tint that can bee seen in your picture.
The other one is an older C7O and it has a much better screen with a warmer yellow tint.
I've wondered to myself if when the device became a hit that they might have just run out of the better screens.
How can I see is my screen washed?
There is no one with Nexus 7 around me to compare it.

This screen is very dull and looks almost like it has a subtle gray fog over it when comparing to my Galaxy S III. My unit is great aside from the slightly disappointing screen. Holding out hope for some software fix!
Unfortunately the SGS3 also looks blue. Hard to win! Haha. Best colors and brightness I have seen were on the HTC One X. I'd pay double the price of the Nexus 7 if it had that screen. Wouldn't even think twice about it either.
Does everybody forget that this is a 200$-250$ tablet? Want a good screen spend the extra 250$ and get a high quality premium tablet. For 250$ this tablet rocks I love it. FWIW... I own a galaxy tab 10.1

I don't think the cost of the tablet is the reason or should be an excuse in this case. This is after all not a normal $200 tablet. My $200 Nook Color tablet produces better colors and the $200 Kindle Fire HD has much better colors.
The Nexus 7 has an IPS display. I think it should look better than this. I'm hoping it's something with the Tegra drivers or something and can be fixed with an update.
Looking at the pics from my N7 I can definetly tell a difference the kids face is full of color and the blue is perfect and whites are white with no hues. Then looking at yours its terrible. Have you disabled the Nvidia smart dimmer? Because I have.

I have also received a nexus with the exact same issue! C80
Contrast/colors is very weak, and white seems overexposed in pics.
I hoped that I could live with it, since I got a tablet whith non of the other problems users are having.
Because of this thread, I have now requested a new one. So, I cross my fingers!
That dull screen did annoy me every time I used it...
(and I have lost respect to Asus, wtf! SOOO many having different hardware problems. Quite disturbing actually. A sad story for both Google and Asus.)

its wierd that " top phones " from SOny have different displays..(they say that the display are the same) but their NOT...maybe it has to do something with " it depends were the phone is made"...NOT ALL PHONES ARE EQUALY the same....

And also Sony Xperia Z has Bravia 2 engine that adjust the colors and also you''ll see when u'll have a Xperia Z in hand that the screen is better than one we find on Xperia TX/T/S blabla..because also as I've heard that U change modify the settings for(contrast, colors, and others things like on a real tv).

Almost any screen can be considered good compared to this, especially if you don't include BE or any dubious software tweaks that don't always work. But, to answer your question, pit the HOX / iPhone 5 against the XT and the HTC Droid DNA / Butterfly against the XZ . Take a look at those and come back and tell me the screens Sony uses are excellent, or even good. I dare you!

HTC makes the best screens in the planet, I admit, but the second would be Sony. Not Apple or Samsung. Apple screens are average, maybe comparable to Sony's, while Samsung's are pure nonsense. Samsung screens are oversaturated and colours are not accurately displayed. Most oddly, it can't even display whites properly.
Iphone 5 screen is comparable with HTC ONE X..
also gsmarena said that the screen of Xperia Z isn't so good..and they think that is a fault phone...
also...dont know why I look at my SX T screen and compare it with an ARC S screen..and i dont see any difference !!! WHAT? :|
I dont like AMOLED SCREEn, but with my xperia t i prefer better the one from S3.

HTC and Apple don't MAKE any screens. They use mostly screens produced by Sharp or LG. And usually they're the same thing, only calibrated differently. Also, Apple is probably the only company which calibrates screens for proper colors. So bashing Apple while praising HTC for its screens doesn't make any sense.
Also, I bet that most PenTile Samsung screens could look much more natural with proper calibration. The screen used on the HTC One S and the first PadFone look pretty good.

Actually it does. HTC's screens are 'painted', displayed differently, more vibrant but not too extreme till the crazy colour gamma of the S3. Like it or not, it is a flaw of Pentile matrix that causes the terrible blue tint. No amount of calibration can solve that sad flaw.

I wasn't comparing Samsung's screens to HTC's screens. They're different technologies, with different problems. I just said that Samsung's PenTile screens could look more natural with proper calibration.
While everyone is complaining about the Pentile matrix screen has horrible blue tint, my biggest gripe about it is the fuzziness it causes on the text. I thought they nailed it with the Galaxy S2 when they didn't use the Pentile screen, but they decided to continue using it with the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note...
With that being said, I think the Retina screen from Apple is still one of the best in the market. Screen is sharp, colours are natural and never over-saturated or does it feel under-saturated.
I wouldn't judge the Xperia Z too much from the pics and pre-production shots. Using a camera to take pictures of a bright screen never produces the exact white balance anyways...

Ok Im doing some tests with battery life.
(Battery test is not complete yet., more accurate results will be ready on Monday) And I want to tell you guys for now I can say the battery life with out STAMINA mode is very good.
All day from morning until now I'm using my phone every 5 min. Pictures, videos, internet, games, apps....long story short the phone was on very active use.
(I did so many restarts also)

Now guys pay attention to grey UI colors (background)
When you put screen at maximum brightness, it begins to seem that black color looks greyish !
But after looking closely you realize that this is dark grey color . You may have at first look a illusion of bad screen. But again it just grey UI. (why sony did that ?!).
Example:
(PS When the first deodex rom will appear, I will make a nice theme for us, witch is will bring much eye candy UI like this: AOSP Jelly Bean theme)
However I took a picture to show you something.
This is a "black" wallpaper from Cyanogen mod 10.1 bootanimation.zip with full brightness at dark room.
As you see dark is not dark enough
Here is some camera comparison.

I also did some cool picture of the device

UPDATE: 02/25/13
Guys I have a bad and good news.
Let's start with the good news.
STAMINA not just a stupid energy mode. It's kind of intelligent scanning program. Witch is tracking all active process.
You will ask me "what do you mean ?"
Example I using BeWeather app. (very nice weather application, very sexy and provides beautiful widgets)
Today I got notification:
Not bad yea ?
Now bad news.
The battery life is bad. Yes guys. More bad than Galaxy S III.
My phone was on charge all night (more than 9 hours). When I woke up I activate STAMINA mode.
I always listening music and surfing the internet when I in bus. (from New Jersey to New York)
The way is around 2-3 hours.
(due to my C6603 model witch is not working with Tmobile 4G, Im using tmobile hotspot)
Long story short I arrived to the work. Check my battery status:
With the same active usage:
On galaxy S3 I got at least: 79-83%
On galaxy note 2 I got at least 92%
So if you see I providing only true info. Where is no bulls.h.i.t.
And another good news
I get a lot of compliments because of this phone. The phone is sexy as f*ck
Regards.
UPDATE:
Ok guys I found something interesting !
We all know about the liquid indicators witch is are generally placed in similar locations (under the battery) These indicators turn red when exposed to water, which can void your warranty.
So Xperia Z also have that "liquid indicators" and its located inside under protective pads.

Camera problem: red/blue/purple noise in low light photos

Hello everybody!
I am now a proud owner of an HTC One and I absolutely love it.
Its an SH35BW903846 and, build quality wise, its almost perfect - 99% perfect. No gaps, no dents, not dead pixels, no light bleed and not even the pop/crackle. It's running the 1.29.401.16 software.
The only problem I have (I don't know yet if it is a problem), is with the camera in night time and very low light scenes.
My problem is that in night shots and very low light scenes, the camera turns the black into blue (or red in very very dark scenes). For example, I included some photos, on a dark street with only a few light posts it turns black areas into blurry blue. Yes, it lets in more light (and more natural looking light) than my old One X, but the black areas are blue.
Not to mention, some times it has trouble focusing so a few of the shots I attached were taken after 2-3 tries.
Even more, in very very dark scenarios - see the last picture - it turns the blackness into red.
Now, my questions:
Is this normal?
Has anyone else had this problem (is it a problem)?
Can someone post a night time picture taken with their one in similar scenario and without the "blue"?
I am a bit worried because if it is a flaw than i would have to return my almost perfect One... :crying:

UPDATED 13th of November: I took my phone into service again. This time they didn't replace my whole phone, but they did replace the camera module. They put in a camera from SHARP, sensor date 14 october 2013. The first tests I've done indicate that they've finally found a way/a sensor/a manufacturer to make the damned camera perform in low light like it supposed to... See a photo comparison of the new camera here.
UPDATED 14th of October: A comparison test after getting the 4.3 and Sense 5.5 Update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46781359&postcount=3099
UPDATED (2nd of October) - If you have the same problem, please fill in this Google form made by @gogogaga7 so we can have a centralized data base with information about the units that are flawed. The form is here: http://goo.gl/HmRJqC
UPDATED (5th of July) - I just got a replacement for my faulty unit and I just posted comparison photos in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43265994&postcount=89
Advice: If your camera gives you similar results with blue/red/purple noise in low-light photos -> take it back to HTC or an operator or repair service for a replacement!
UPDATED with Poll (13th of August) - Seeing how many replies and page views this thread has gathered during these couple of months, how many of you said they experience this problem and how HTC has not publicly recognized it (either as software or hardware fault), I added a Poll to see indeed how many of us are having this problem. Please vote!

@VictorCozmei
Heya buddy! Yes this is the same as mine! I have been trying to create a discussion of this eversince and also found some users here with the same or worst than ours issue.
Apparently reducing the ISO solves the issue.
Anyways do you have access to other HTC One devices? Like demo on stores or relatives owning one? You could try by covering the camera lense with your hand. If it turns bright red then we must assume it's a normal behaviour of the camera. I can't really tell but I think this is happening because of the very aggressive sensitivity of light on our phones. I compared it with my previous phone and an ISO 100 on HTC One is equally similar to the ISO 400 of my previous phone.
Anyways if we can gather much feedback from users maybe we would know if this is a defect indeed(software/hardware) or just normal.
Also this should not be Chromatic aberration or at least similar to thos of the iphone 5 purple haze as it's like the opposite. CA and iphone purple haze is due to high contrast whilst ours is happening on low contrast areas.
^^^ @Riyal
Thanks for the reply. I thought for surely my post would go unnoticed and I'll be left alone with this potential problem even if there are loads of HTC One owners on the forum who can give a helping hand but just don't bother...
I don't have immediate access to another HTC One, but I will be following your advice and I will surely test them that way... Again, I sure hope this isn't a flaw in my phone. I would hate to take it back because it is so perfect in every other way :crying:
Just hope somebody else could join in the discussion and share their experience...
I notice a couple of interesting things when trying stuff out after reading your post:
If it's very dark (probably darker than what it was when you took the example pictures) the screen could be blue, red, or purple (a mix of blue and red noise upon closer inspection) depending on how much light I allowed back in.
If it's completely dark (put it down on a table), the screen is always red. This is actually pretty common among many sensors though.
Taking pictures with it at night in my living room with the tv on, the pictures are usually orange.
So it seems to me to be a property of the camera even when the camera is otherwise fine as I have noticed no other issues with mine. Thinking back to my old iPhone, I remember the pictures being blue just like your examples when it was dark. Maybe further evidence of it being normal?

@Xerro-Five
Do you also experience the same issue as ours? I believe it's a miscalibration. Or probably an issue with image sense chipset of HTC. Did any of you guys already tried directly ask HTC about this issue?
Anyways could I ask you guys the build number of your phones?
@VictorCozmei
Considering that this phone should boast low light capabilities I think this is not a normal behavior. What we should do is ask directly HTC if this is solved through software or hardware. As far as I know not all people here experience this issue else we could seen alot more posts about this.

Well yeah, that's what I was getting at lol. Even right now for example it's dark and the blacks can turn blue and/or red. Again I don't think this is a problem but rather a normal behavior of image sensors (at least in my experience) so I haven't made any complaints or inquiries.

Some users doesn't have that annoying red/blue tint on their devices even when covered.
Here's mine
And here's from another user
@Riyal
Mine doesn't get red when i cover the camera with my hand and take a picture (or if i put it on the table with the camera down). Its black, but at night time and in extremely very low light it goes to red... If it finds a little more light than the black areas get blue, blueish or purple... And it gets very hard to focus for a proper shot, even if i point it towards a light source like a lamp post.
I took a photo with my hand fully covering the camera and it turned out black. I compared it to the one posted on the other thread by the other user, the one who uploaded his black photo for you so you could see the exif data.
Compared, mine was taken with ISO 400, the other user's photo was ISO 2000 ... Mine had thew birghtness -2.163531, his was -4.48546
What does yours say?
Mine is also saying 2000 ISO and brightness(based on properties detail on windows 7) 4.28472
This only mean 1 thing... Our phone's sensor is either uncalibrated or is just way too aggressive in collecting light.
I can only recreate a pitch black result by covering the camera if my I manually set my ISO to 400 or 200. Setting it to 800, 1600 or Auto shows up the reddish tint.
I already contacted HTC about this and sent a sample screenshot. Now let's see what they can tell.
@Professional photographers
What do you think this is? color temperature issue? Gain issue? I can modify these values in the kernel if someone can confirm me what might be the real issue is.

Well I guess all I could say is.... Welcome to the club! lol! Now with so many users having this issue I don't know if it's indeed an issue or not. Is this the downside of having 300% more light in a low pixel resolution camera?
---------- Post added at 04:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:26 PM ----------
By the way I'm gonna go to our local telecom provider later since they have display units of HTC One here. I'll take a look and see if it also has the issue. Last time I checked it was a May build so it's a new batch.
*Hope it gets the same result to ease my mind*
I'm really gonna fret out if it's a hardware issue as I have to ship the device back to europe from asia just to get it fixed/replaced >.<

I'm looking at the anandtech review and I don't see this problem in their night shots... For example, this picture ( http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/gadgets/HTC/HTCOne/cameracomp/bench-HTC One.jpg ) was taken on full auto and it returned an ISO of 531 1/15s and all that was supposed to be black was black...

I don't think so... Look at the light in the area it's way to evenly spread out for yours to become reddish believe me I have tried it. For the photo to become reddish you basically need to have a very limited light source(candle in a completely dark room) for the sides to become reddish.
+1 on the above stated issues. When I cover the lens, the image turns red because iso shoots up. However when I manually set the iso lower (say 100), then the image is just plain black.
I honestly do not think this is a defect of some kind but rather normal behaviour with high iso settings. But when someone can take a pitch black picture with the lens covered on iso 2000 than we will have a problem

I've tried taking photos in similar scenarios like the one on the anadtech site and my result was a photo with blue and purple-ish noise instead of the black that appears in their photos. All on auto on my device -> ISO 2000, 1/7s, blue instead of black areas
I was thinking the same as you before someone gave me this pitch black result.

I'm pretty sure I could get exactly the same results with my phone. Even just a single street light is enough to remove the reddish tint on the camera. However what I find odd is flourescent lights can't remove it.
@VictorCozmei @Floris2310 @Xerro-Five
Confirmed! We have a weird sensor on our devices. I manage to play with another HTC One in a store here in our place and it's indeed having perfect pitch black images
damn, bad news then. Probably a stupid question but did you check the ISO settings on the device?
There are two possible scenarios here:
1) We have a sensor which is acting weird/broken
2) There is something wrong with the ISO selection and it typically takes an ISO to high which causes the red image
I think (read: hope) the second option is more likely and the good news is that this would probably be a software rather than hardware issue.
Anyway, thanks @Riyal for checking this!
@Riyal
This is horrible :crying: @#$%!
If this is truly confirmed and there are a number of One's out there with broken sensors, than I think this thread should be renamed so that all users know about this problem. Maybe some of them, looking to buy the One, can do the camera test before purchasing a faulty unit!
I just got my One and I'm falling in love with it and now I have to take it back and be without it... More over, the great HTC-partner service we have here doesn't not know the meaning of the word "replacement" and they will most surely try to open and fix it (oh the horror!!) ...

I would wait a little longer before returning the device. The 4.2.2 update is just around the corner and I have read somewhere that there are some camera improvements. Perhaps the issue is fixed with the update. If it's a software problem that is.
