With Android next iteration right around the corner (October 14 allegedly), i believe we need a dedicated news thread about Android 4.4 KitKat, as the leaks are appearing almost weekly.
Please lets stick our conversation to the leaks, not mockups or Nexus 5 news.
What we "think" we know so far:
September 29, a bug report log file and corresponding screenshot, the build number is KRS74H, which indicates a date around September 13th.

September 20, a picture from the Korean keyboard IME app offered by Google and sitting in the Google Play Store.
September 16, the device in the images was apparently left charging unsupervised by a Google employee at a bar features the lock screen and top bar.
So.. What's the new features that will available on Kitkat, eh?

Why is there a KLP icon if its supposed to be kit Kat?

It was initially meant to be called KLP, and i believe that was the name that the Android team had been using internally.
The whole kitkat naming thing was recent, so i guess that they will have to modify those types of last minute things (like the usb debug icon)
The white WiFi and signal icon makes me feel it didn't connect to Google service
I agree, KitKat clearly was a last minute marketing move.
Are you guys missing the Holo blue already? I know i am!

But the clock and battery are also white, which may mean that its simply a status bar wide colour rather than an indication of connectivity to google.
My guess, the wifi and signal icons will turn blue when connected to Google Services.
I kinda understand the new color scheme, the quick settings are white, notifications are grey, the blue clock and battery are dissonant with the rest.

Every picture shows them always white. That would be strange to turn signal and wifi blue and not match the colour scheme.
Just a thought, but color change is happening since Gingerbread and it's a handy feature so let's hope Google doesn't ditch that.
I'm glad to see the keyboard screenshot. I would like to see a better stock keyboard. I'm looking for an excuse to use stock, but currently it's just not better than Swiftkey.

Hey,
Wanted to do a quick poll on how you use your amazing PA ROM.
hybrid with pie, phoneUI without pie...
should be interesting
I enabled multiple choice - select more than one if you keep switching between two interfaces
Options are:
1. Expended Desktop enabled
if disabled:
2. PhoneUI with pie (nav 0%)
3. PhoneUI
4. Phablet with pie (nav 0%)
4. Phablet
5. TabletUI
selected PhoneUI but I wasn't aware they made pie accessible from nav @ 0% again...awesome.
First Choice: PhoneUI with Pie (Nav 0%). This is the most normal way to use the phone. UI Paradigm is very consistent across all interactions.
Second Choice: Expanded Desktop on Phone UI. Awesome screen estate! But the non-fullscreen lockscreen makes overall interaction inconsistent. For people who are obsessive with UI design, it won't settle well with them, like me.
Third Choice: Tablet UI 220. Could've been the best UI but some kinks need to be polished. First is the bug in Contacts app which shows a blue line. Second, some elements are too big like notification bar clock, app icons in the app drawer, etc.
I am a silent tech-obsessed fan. And so far, PA with Nova Launcher Prime on Nexus 4 gives me the best smartphone experience yet. The only element I love about my iPhone 5 is it's very consistent interaction, not to mention uniform icon sizes which Android doesn't bother implementing.

For me that's the biggest part of it - I like Pie and think it has it's uses, but the best thing is being able to make everything smaller. Everytime I install a new rom I'm shocked by how big all the boxes and bars are - they don't need to be on such a high resolution screen!
I didn't use the expanded desktop, i use only the Phone UI
I use hybrid without pie. For some applications I changed size and layout options and set sometimes expanded desktop.
Example for chrome; size 250dpi and layout 720p with expanded desktop.
Phone ui, I like stock look. I also installed 4.3 aosp launcher cause new launcher that comes with pa looks kind of stretched and weird and there isn't an option to make it look like stock (in terms of grids, margins, shadow on bottom and top). I use PA because it's more original than any rom out there, it has its own features, not just ports from cm. Also I Love halo, for me it's one of the best features, original, useful and refreshing, and I like having stuff like that on my n4
N4, PA+Faux
Phone UI with PIE. Lovin it!

Wow you guys.... Google is obviously about to do a major UI overhaul. They redid several things right before they released ICS (play store and the google search widget come immediately to mind). This is the same exact thing. They're not disregarding holo, these newer apps use a newer holo style. As for the drive widget, it's still just a dark gingerbread version.

I don't know about Google getting ready to do a major UI overhaul (again), that would firmly be in rumor territory, but it is true that different groups within Google lead development of different applications. GMail is handled by one group, the Drive application is handled by another, and so on. Some of those widgets haven't had their UI changed in a while, which is partially responsible. It is also true that not all of the Google applications follow an identical version of the design guidelines, which does lead to a little internal inconsistency.
That may partially be to show third party developers the different kinds of options they have, if intentional, or, if unintentional, might just be due to the disparate groups of developers at Google maintaining different applications separately. It may also be due to the very different purposes each of those widgets has, and what data, options, and features those widgets are meant to display. To be honest, it has never really bothered me personally, as the Holo theme is relatively flexible, aside from the heights. I do think the heights should follow the design a little more closely, since there is a guideline specifically for that.
Admittedly Google Music looks kinda cool, but outta place.
You will fall flat after seeing the music 5.0 app... Just like the redesigned market it has gotten a simpler ui and full white interface. Though background might change its a lot similar to Google now.
Music you own and suggested songs will seamlessly appear amidst each other. Lots of swipe gestures too. You can buy right off the app

There is "Holo Dark" just like the phone app & there is "Holo Light" like the contacts app
I think they should just let them user select-able in the next release just like windows phone and they should be applied to the holo system including the google apps
Holo is a set of guidelines. Not every app has to be the same color scheme. Some apps have new/interesting/experimental UI components, that's how they find out what works and what doesn't.

Im hoping the whole system becomes like Google Now
Maybe Google is slowly bringing android to look like that! First they update apps, next comes the system :fingerscrossed:
I must admit i'm not a fan of the card view UI that you can see people post about on Google+ . Those flat widgets and icons..just don't look right for me.
But even if google decides to go that way, we will always have different icon packs and custom launchers
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
actually no i will not, the new trend is for more vibrant and alive colors with minimalistic line for the frames and borders just like the new music and store apps holo was good and battery friendly but it was way to dark at some times and also the black background in the app drawer must go, either make it transparent or give as the ability to choose picture or color
This thread doesn't make much sense until we actually see what KLP looks like. How can we "miss" something when we don't know what KLP will look like.
I might, depending on what KLP will look like. Right now, I'm using Makocolors ROM, which basically looks like Holo UI, but injects colors into icons and stuff in the menus/status bar. At first, Holo UI looks good and minimalistic, but after awhile, it just gets bland and boring, I feel like I need colors in my life after a few weeks. That, and the darkness makes my phone look depressing after a bit

I think it'd be cool if the system trim changed colour to match the app. So if you have Music open the clock etc would fade to orange, Books, Facebook and so on it'd go blue etc.
if you like it, cool.
if you don't, change it.
if you don't know how, learn.

Mate, the major idea of CM and AOSP-based roms is to provide up to date aosp experience to (mostly non-nexus and often legacy) android devices. It's thus highly improbable that developers of these roms will stick with "obsolete" ui.
So I've been trying to find an app like this forever ! I've tried others like DroidTint, Flat Style and Lollistat but most of them slowed down the performance of my phone. This is the first app that I've found that makes my system look even more beautiful without taking a toll on the performance.
I did not make this module and have nothing to do with it's development. Just thought I would share this and hopefully you guys appreciate it !
Sorry ! Can't add external links as this is my first post >_>
UPDATE: I was watching a movie on Netflix and noticed that the app made the status and nav bar transparent! Looks beautiful!

Ditto on the black bar. I actually paid for the app and was super bummed i had to delete it. A good example is the stock clock app which i use every night. if you use night mode like i do there is a gray bar that remains and no way to fix it without turning the function off everytime. I prefer something that's more accurate and doesn't change color too much.
I stopped using g PerfectColorBar last week. The nav wouldn't match what it was supposed to, but instead it would be the same as the status bar on a few apps such as messenger. It happened after one of the updates though.

Are there any options available to shift the status bar postition periodically? I'm asking because I remember my Note 4 had some image retention where the battery, clock, signal strength was depicted.
I'm thinking the black wallpaper background didn't help my case either and probably increased "screen burn in" likely hood.
I read about immersive mode already.

So dark themes are bad? I've always used dark themes on my phones. I don't like lighter themes, but might have to reconsider, I guess.
My wife's Note 4 had terrible burn in around the status bar, so I know exactly what you're saying, but she didn't use any theme and had a bright picture as her background.

I read from another learned poster on here about image retention and it's worst if you for example have a pitch black background and pure white status icons similar to what I'm currently running on mine. Apparently that's why since Android version 7 I think, the top of the status bar is colored.
Gonna try and find the link.

I didn't go with a completely black theme this time. I'm using the Manner II Samsung theme from the Samsung Theme store. It has a lot of black/dark gray and purple. It's a nice theme. Bright themes annoy me because they show every flaw in screen uniformity and I see them all.
Doesn't AOD do exactly what you're asking with the areas that it displays? It would make perfect sense for them to also do it for the status bar area and any areas that display frequently.
Burn in is the downside of this technology, especially for people who use their phones a lot. Given how most of the flagship products use OLED, you'd think that someone would have come up with a solution for it by now.
