When looking for a new kernel for my kindle fire HD 7" running cm 10.1 am I looking for one compatible with cm10.1 , with the fire or both?
Specifically I'm trying to get USB otg function operational. If there is a ROM that will support this feature I'd be willing to switch from Hashcode's cm10.1.

No USB OTG. Never was, there isn't now, and may never be.

It's a pain to do OTG with KFHD because no voltage is available. You can make this happen with a certain Y USB cord but it's sloppy and inconvenient or you can use Wi-Drive which is OK.

Not my video but explains it well enough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M. I think it would be attainable by using a moded fastboot style USB cord but with a female end for mass storage. Get the voltage and the USB option will light up. Needless to say that this is at own risk.

Looks like someone has already done the female 'fastboot' bit. Rather than going through all the trouble with a charge pack, looks like he just used the already available voltage already present from the voltage pin. I have not tried this yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U19c7PfR7Ts

Having already bought an otg cable thinking it was just plug and play and a separate fastboot cable to fix a brick, is there, in existance, an adapter that turns a male USB (full sized) into a female USB port (also full sized)?
And is the power provided by the voltage pin enough to run a standard flash drive?

I have seen a video where the USB was powered off of 3 Volts from just 2 AA batteries. I'm thinking 4-5 Volts would be more desirable. The last video I posted only shows him using what I thought could be used. I have not done that one yet.
It looks like he modded a Female 2.0 USB cord by jumping the Voltage pin like one would making a home brewed fastboot cord to attain the Voltage needed. It's all one piece. Using something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-Typ...tension-Adapter-Converter-Cable-/120998059596
The adapter you asked for can be found here http://compare.ebay.com/like/221249757202?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar It's just a male to female USB 2.0 adapter.
Here is a great topic on how to home brew your own fastboot. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39569189 Here's a video as well. Motorola is the same as the Kindle Fire HD 7 fastboot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwwI_6doBWk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Thank you! So, I have a "factory" or "fastboot" cable already, now, if I buy the male to female adaptor will otg work? Is that all I've been missing, is a "powered" USB port? Or do I need some additional software as well? Like a new os or kernel?

Yes, you need the female to female USB. Good catch. The first video I posted about here http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M&desktop_uri=/watch?v= BFEMh0ZYT5M shows the method with the Y style USB cord working with a KFHD running CM 9. I'm thinking the second video just utilizes the voltage available from the board vrs a charging pack.

I'm not so sure he is just using an adaptor. The voltage still must be applied. I'm thinking he has a couple small watch batteries in there to apply voltage. The fastboot cable plugged in does not put out voltage. I would recommend using the Y connection setup until someone figures out how the other guy wired the one piece.

All you're trying to do is energize the flash drive. I'm thinking that the one video, he took a USB plug down to bare bones and fixed it so there was voltage going to pin 1 which is the voltage pin. Putting the voltage only to the USB and not the KFHD.

This is all very helpful, but what I do not want is to have to use three different cables especially if they are bodged together with tape and exposed wires that could be pulled lose in my pocket. What if I jumped pins one and four on my existing otg cable. Does the kindle output voltage from either of those pins? Would that do the trick?

That would turn your USB into fastboot cable. I spliced into a regular OTA cord running power to red wire leading to flash drive only and ground to blue wire, both PC and fkash drive. Started to work and realized that I accidentally snipped green data wire as well. That was late last night. Have not got back to it yet. I use a 32 GB Wi-Drive myself.

i didn't think the N7 could support power and OTG
You want it for video or audio? You could try a wifi solution for audio. Or be the guy that gets the pins to work.
there is NO data and charge at the same time. This is due to how the device switches from charge to usb mode thru the pin 4 . it senses rather a data cable or charge cable is being used . will not charge via otg..
there are several threads with experiments trying to get this work .You could use a wifi or bluethooth drive for data...
I have no clue what im doing but this is what im playing with at the moment. Its a old dock for sgs2 i believe but it has a dc and usb input on the back of it.

Would get the cheaper one but the juiced one has a flexible cable vs the fixed usb on the other one. Would this be pointless though?
Unfortunately OTG sends ground up the sense pin to trigger host mode. Once activated it sends 5V DOWN the USB cable to power your USB devices. Trying to send voltage up the cable at the same time to the Nexus would not be a good idea. The only way around it I can think of would be to hack the firmware to only activate the data pins in host mode and keep the power circuit seperate, then you could power the USB device from a modified dock/hub which sends power up the USB cable to the device.
A lot of work, and without the powered hub, OTG would be useless!
In the long run wouldn't it be easier to just plug in the power lead when needed and have the otg in the rest of the time? (or vice versa). It would mean you having to have easy access to the usb port but I can't see an easy non technical solution to connecting both at once.
Don't use the Nexus 7 for a car install. You can get an Acer Iconia A100 with a full-size USB port to connect to whatever external storage solution you want, and it's usually about the same price or cheaper than the Nexus 7.

Same principle. In normal OTG host mode the tablet powers the peripherals. A USB keyboard/mouse will be no exception to that.

Ofcourse there is charge and otg at the same time by just simply shorting pins 4 and 5 with a resistor,in my case for xperia p , a 100k resistor does it.

Unable to get usb Nook Hd + to recognize any usb input
I downloaded the zip mentioned in the first post. Previously I was on a hybrid version from Android for Nook of 4.1.2
I have tried mounting with chainfire and nexus media importer but not seeing any drives. I have tried two different flash drives a mouse and a ps3 controller with powered usb hub. None of the devices have been detected.
I have gotten usb otg to work for a nexus 7 so I'm not a total noob. But far from expert as I can't get usb otg for my htc evo 4g lte.
Under settings it showing the custom rom that you linked here.
However I may have installed incorrectly as I can no longer get into Nook mode. Only Android mode seems to work now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i am not the most skilled in this area but i am also looking for documentation on the pinning. i am thinking if the whole connector is actually connecting (can use all pins) we can do a lot more than just otg this could allow powering of the tab and data at the same time, possibly with a custom rom and hardware permitting display out with power and data all at once. but thats being super hopeful haha

ah thank you for the heads up, i also read that someone found the hdmi pinning (probably took apart that hdmi adapter) as well but no pinout was shown :/ but hey that means were getting closer!
Has there been any attempt at hardware hacking the Nook HD+ ?
I just bought mine on Monday, roooted stock and Im loving it but I hate the 30pin proprietary connector.
What I would like is a small dongle, the size of the hdmi adapter, that has a female mini or micro usb coming out the side for OTA. Or maybe one on either side for OTA and charge or OTA and microSD.
Are the pinouts of the stock connector available? I could get a stock cable and experament with it.

I know the KFHD7 can't power things plugged into the micro USB but assuming a USB hub or power from another source just having the data cable plug into it should work, right? I've tried a USB2 HDD and USB wireless mouse/keyboard and they don't work though, although they do on my Samsung Galaxy S3 using same apps to mount in case of the USB2 HDD.
If this is possible what am I missing to make it work?

Damn, lack of USB OTG support is a real shame, I was hoping to use the KFHD7 as a portable media centre/laptop replacement but it might be impossible by the sound of it.
One thing i forgot to mention is that my KFHD7 is modified with TWRP and CM 10.1, runs really smooth compared to the stock software. But is USB OTG stillnot possible like it was on the original Kindle Fire? Seeing as this newer one uses a second bootloader and all.
