Cracked Screen from Steam? - Moto X Q&A

I had a Nexus 4 from late January/early February until last week. Not a scratch on the front or back glass, even though I used only a bumper about 60% of the time and nothing the other 40%. I dropped it at least 40 times, a few times on cement. I own the Moto X for one week, and already it has a cracked screen. I dropped it Friday night on the sidewalk with a CaseMate case on, and there appeared to be no damage. Through hours of use Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday, I noticed no scratches. Then, when I got out of the shower last night, there was a pretty nice sized crack.
What is the likelihood that the steam from the shower caused the crack? I can't imagine it was too hot in the bathroom, and I left my Nexus 4 in the bathroom while showering all the time. Or, alternatively, is it possible that the drop on Friday caused a microscopic crack that wasn't apparent to the naked eye? I know that the crack was not there in visible form before taking the shower. There is no way I didn't notice this for two days. Additionally, my girlfriend was testing out the phone for a few minutes about 20 minutes beforehand. I was beside her on the couch the whole time, so I know she did not drop it or break it. But most importantly, she didn't notice any crack or scratch. She definitely would have pointed it out, as she knows I'm very...umm..."meticulous" with my phones, especially since I wasn't completely decided on the Moto X yet (may trade it for N5 later). Would there be any way for me to prove a manufacturer's defect from this to get the screen replaced for free? Has anyone else heard of Moto X's having this problem?

If I had to guess when you dropped it, it did something to the phone that caused it to put pressure on where ever the cracking started. The hot steam from the shower caused the glass to expand just enough to put too much pressure on the area and it cracked.

How durable is our HD2?

Hi,
Got my HD2 couple months back and using it with silicon cover since beginning but now I want to take the cover off and show the real beauty of the phone to everyone but I am too scared to take the silicon cover off because I am clumsy and I drop my phone way too frequently.
I know the phone looks very durable but exactly how durable is it??? can people share some experiences like oh I dropped it from 5ft and it was intact or oh I dropped it from 2ft and the screen broke etc etc.
I used to have HTC Kaiser/tilt and I dropped it way too my times without any covers but it never gave up on me.
PS: I know there is no real way to define durability of a cellphone but u know there are some cellphones which are really delicate and u have to handle them with extra extra care. While there are some like the kaiser who are made for rough use. Just want to know which category our HD2 belongs to?
not very. i've cracked my screen twice.

oops!!! sorry about that!!!
did you drop it screen facing down? or on some corner of the phone?
I've used mine without any sort of protection since the day it was released in US (end of March). It does not have a single scuff, mark, or scratch anywhere. I just dropped it for the first time a week ago from a counter roughly 2.5 feet onto a hard tile floor and still no scuff, mark, or scratch (I don't know how it fell as it was dark when it happened and I was looking in a different direction; turned my head while headphones were plugged in so it pulled it off the counter).
I'm extremely happy with the durability of the HD2.
Since Nov
Ive had my HD2 since Nov last year...
No cover no protection.. and it looks like new.. I dont know how you managed to break the screen twice.. you probably throw that phone in some weird angles.. but really does last well!
dropped mine from my lap getting out of my low car onto the bitumen and fell back down perfectly flat. absolutely smashed the screen but 2 months later its still working fine and waiting for it to die before replacing the screen. i work installing solar panels (PV) on roofs, crawling though ceilings, etc. sees alot of abuse so while the screen smashed the components inside are well placed. had it before america could get it (in australia)
i got it since 10 months now, without any cover. screen is absolutely clean, but the rest looks a bit used, but not that bad
a friend is using it without respect. throwing it over the table and such things, he never broked something on the phone.. the screen stopped working one time and he needed it to replace cause that, but it didnt break xD
another friend broke his screen when his hd2 fellt on a freakin spoon on the floor (WTF did that spoon on the floor?)
Had it 2 1/2 weeks, no scratches, no scuffs. Just annoying dust under the screen
I have mine almost a year now.
A few weeks ago he started acting weird. Screen flipped sideways and putted speaker on.
I've send it to repair and they replaced the motherboard. Everything is ok now again.
No scratches after such a long time with no screen protector.
ive dropped mine once from about 3 fet and it only made a slight scuff on the corner
ive always had a screen protector but never any other protection and it looks great for the past 4 months
very happy with it

If you get dust under the screen, then it is a factory defect. Since the screen is glued to the LCD, somewhere around the edge it's not completely sealed. I have had mine for 7 months now and I do not have even ONE spec of dust under the screen, and I carry it in my pocket without any protection at all, all the time.

When I say dust, I mean there were a couple of hairs in the screen when I got it. They don't affect any viewing pleasure so I didn't return it

How many times have you drop your Note?

Hi Guys,
I just want to know if anyone of you have had dropped there Note on the floor or off the bed or off the table?
How did it go?
I know I did. I just got a call from someone unexpectedly while my Note was charging. It was one of those calls that caught me really offguard and I was near sleep at that time.
And I really was thrown offguard that I slipped the Note off my hands and into the.floor.. Oh sh*t was all I could utter.
Good thing our second floor in our house was.made of wood or else I could have kiss the phone goodbye.
Anyone experiencing the same more or less accident than what I had?
Care to share guys?

I dropped it once on cement, when changing in the lockers, I had the same expression you did, but my cheap $1.49 Black Silicon Case saved it.

dropped it enough times (not to remember how many) on to carpeted floors. dropped it about 6 times onto hard floor (accidentally), twice hard enought to dislodge the official flip case and spen and battery but phone has survived without a scratch (once it had fallen flat on screen but with flip cover covering it on to hard floor and luckily survived the fall from about 2 - 3 feet height). once my child dropped it through the gap in the sofa bed and screen edge landed on the metal rods of the sofa bed and screen survived but small dent on the plastic like thing surrounding the raised screen glass.
been lucky so far but need to insure the phone soon.
Three months out and never dropped mine not one bit. I treat this thing like it came from my own sperm. I don't let others touch it because I'm afraid if anyone drops it, i won't be able to control myself and stab someone in the face.....
with the S-Pen.
I just got my gnote today and luckily I haven't dropped it. But the Guy I alsmost bought his gnote yesterday dropped his while on the way to my place to sell it. The screen was broken as a result. Poor Guy.
never and never will be

A couple of times, and it doesn't have a scratch. Much better durability than an iPhone.

4 times. One from 3 feet on rough asphalt. Bottom metal border scratched, screen intact.
The others were from 1 - 2 feet on hard but smooth floor, no consequences at all.
I have more complains about the back cover, it's getting worn out (the texture on the back is disspearing on some parts) from just resting the phone on tables.
Fortunately it's cheap to replace.
I work in a bar, wearing a tabard with front pockets where I put everything on as I cannot reach my pants pockets when wearing it.
Basicly it's always in front of me, while I keep leaning against the bar furniture with iron pins sticking out (to hang bottle openers and towels.).
I broke me 60$ watch glass against one of the pins, but haven't scratched the phone a single time, while (no kidding) I keep hitting it with all the stuff in my front pockets.
So, you might call me lucky for 2 reasons, 1. not breaking my screen or 2. having such awesome phone!
I might think about placing a custom screen protection from a dealer who send the wrong size of screen protectors for a 10" tablet who i can cut out, then use the metal cover I bought (Forgot the name, but is the one you protect the side of the phone with, 4 letter name)
I also dropped it from 1.5m high on tiles andit jumped quite far away with an epic slide, not a dam scratch

The 'Did you drop your Nexus 7' is it Okay?

Sooo. I just dropped my Nexus 7. I had it on a piled towel on my desk "a night shower + clean its screen is win". An hour later watching Netflix, it crawled off and hit my carpeted floor from 3 foot high. I freaked out.. Something with a glass front is asking to shatter. Thank to the Android Gods I can't find a single problem. I watched a video showing SquareTrade test on abuse and the Nexus 7 did great compared to the iPad.
Have fellow owners messed up and dropped their baby? If so, pictures? Thankfully the digitizer is working fine for me.
Havent dropped mine, but there is a squaretrade video where they drop it. The screen doesnt seem to crack even if it hits concrete on its back. If it hits on the front though, you'd be in trouble.
If your case, I wouldn't expect it to crack at all. 3 feet on carpet is extremely gentle, especially if its on the back.
Dropped it twice now...
Once was off the ledge near my bed, only about a 20 inch drop, it fell flat and was fine.
Second time I had it in my cargo pants and had forgotten and was dumping my pants (with some other clothes) onto the ground and I dropped it on its edge from about 3-4 feet up.
No issues here!
These devices are amazingly tough. Even the 1st gen iPads take quire a beating being so large and heavy. My stepdad is like a bull in a china shop and watches Netflix at night with headphones and falls asleep. He's broken 3 headphone plugs by snapping off the male end because he drops it from his big belly while laying in bed onto the hardwood floor. I know its happened three times because I've had to buy new headphones four times. Time for a trip to RadioShack and some repair time to recycle the old ones.
I think the nexus 7 is more durable and lighter. On carpet I'm guessing you didn't damage it one bit. Just watch out for those wooden side rails breaking its fall, I've had that sound scare the beejeezees out of me a few times with other devices.

Share your Nexus 4 near death experiences.

After reading many threads & posts about people's Nexus's breaking so easily, I thought I would make this thread. So share your near death experience(s) here.
I've dropped mine from 5 ft, twice on a solid floor, and the only damage is a little scuff on the chrome bezel on the corner.
Yesterday my nexus was dropped into a bin (by my coworker, not me!), so a 3/4ft drop onto hard plastics & stone, and then solid plaster was dropped on top. The only protection my Nexus had was one of those waterproof bags (like when you buy grapes).
That's all. I've skid her a few times along laminate flooring, and she goes through rapid temperature changes (hot hand to freezing stainless steel bench) without shattering.
She works fine & only has a small scuff. So I guess these phones aren't as fragile as people say they are! Cheers.

My nearest-to-death experience was dropping her from 2-3 feet from my lap to the ground, which had carpet. That was more than enough of a scare for me. I do baby my electronics, though. I think I'm going to stop living in fear of breaking my Nexus 4 and start enjoying it. I just took off my screen protector last week and am enjoying the feel of the sloped glass in front. I figure if I continue to be extra cautious, I'll be good. And if I get a scratch, well, I'll just live with it.
I had a nightmare that the back was broken, woke up and I was glad it was just a dream.

The wife and were sitting on the top step of the front porch having a smoke. I thought I had a good grip on it but somehow it came out of my hand and I bobbled it about 5 times as my heart skipped a beat. I finally snagged it out of the air and it went back into my pocket. I've never actually dropped it but I know it would have been finished had it hit and toppled down concrete steps!
We took my three year old son to get his passport photos done. For whatever reason he would not sit calmly in the chair. We gave him my phone to calm him down, which helped. He was playing with it, then the photographer came and my boy got pissed off again. He threw the phone on the ground from about 5 feet up (he was sitting on a stool).
I was ready for it. Picked it up, and not a scratch. The poetic bumper and presumably dbrand skin helped a lot.
I dropped mine once off my bed, onto wood floor. Landed on the back. Didn't damage it, all it had was the stock bumper. Yesterday... I dropped it in the kitchen, between where the floor changes from wood to tile, it landed on the riser that covers that section. Bumper flew off, screen is now shattered and the digitizer no longer works. Just ordered a replacement.. Not happy about it, but that's life. First device I've ever broken. Had it since Nov. 16th of last year. Very sad...
Had one bad one so far, came home from gym and had on track pants I guess you could call them, loose fitting with loose baggy pockets. Soon as I in the door I had to pee super bad so darted up the steps which are hardwood, about 8 steps up it slipped right out of my pocket and did a bounce and tumble all the way back down. Heart stopped lol, had the body glove bumper on it, I was so disgusted I went to the bathroom first anticipating when I got downstairs it would be broke, luckily when I picked it up only a funky little scuff of the case, nothing at all on the phone when I took it out. That was like a month ago and no issues ever since.

Horrible!!
She was in my hands, waist-height. I dropped her when i was closing a door. The door's lower edge had metal on it. So anyway, she slipped outta my hands and I tried to cut the landing with my foot and ended up kicking her into the metal on the door. I did not want to flip her over. She was pristine though. Greatest scare ever...

I like to listen to music while im in the shower, so the day after I got the phone, I sat the phone on a piece of tissue (i hate sitting the bare glass directly on things) and put it on the toilet seat. After I get out, im drying off and I just see the phone slide off of the seat, it was like watching in slow motion lol. I picked it up and there was no damage, i was so happy lol

I put my Nexus 4 on top of my clothes in my work locker. By the time my shift was over, I had completely forgotten about my phone. I then opened my locker and just yanked out my clothes which sent my nexus 4 flying about 7 feet from my locker which was 5 feet high. The phone landed face first and my heart dropped, I carefully lifted it and when I turned it, not a single scratch, mark, or imperfection. I am a lucky son of a *****.
I broke my ankle seriously and had surgery in January. In March, I was hopping around on one foot to the restroom when the N4 popped out of the pocket of my athletic shorts, hit the toilet seat, and luckily bounced to the ground and not inside the toilet.

Flashing Nexus 7 kernel by accident
Someone once asked me if it was an iPhone...
I was at work (food processing plant) and I leaned against a sharp metal corner, right into the same pocket that had my N4. I thought I felt glass break, so I was pretty worried until I checked it at break. Phone was alright though (no damage)

They should be posting here, because they risked their life with that blasphemous statement.
This was when Ubuntu Phone's preview came up. I was one of the first to grab a copy. Downloaded the files and flashed it through adb. Had never used adb in my life. After flashing, the phone is stuck on the Google logo. Waits for 5 mins, still same. Panic really hard. Started to browse all forums - xda, reddit, android authority blah blah for any help. 15 mins passed still stuck on Google logo. Trembling I pick up the Nexus and forcefully power it down. While pressing the power button, my heart beat is so loud that I could hear it. The screen turns off and then powers back on and what I see gives me a stroke.
RED LED OF DEATH.
I had read so many nightmare stories of it and now faced. Suddenly something weird comes. I few glitch like things and then Ubuntu shows. I play Ubuntu for a couple of minutes and then the phone blacks out. Power back up and again the RED LED. Plug the phone into the computer and restore android using mskip's util. NEVER GONNA FLASH UBUNTU.
Post Mortem
So it turns out that during the Google logo a massive battery drain took place. Thats why the red led showed up. Ubuntu didn't have any way to show the battery and that's why it blacked out without any pop-up.

Moisture under camera lens

Hi, a couple of days ago I installed a screen protector on my gear. It was the wet kind where you have to use the spray. BIG MISTAKE! Even though I was cautious and barely got the screen wet after I was fine I noticed that the camera had condensation under the lens. This is supposed to be "water resistant". I let it dry out over night and the moisture was gone. Them last night I was installing a new entertainment system and was sweating while working. I again noticed condensation. This time o was irritated because this should be normal wear and tear.
I took it back to Verizon since it's been less than two weeks since I got it. They hemmed and hawed for about 30 minutes trying to look the problem up in their system. One ales person accused me of dropping it in water which I definitely did not do. I told them I want paying $300 for a watch that had this problem. Eventually they replaced it.
Anyone else have this problem? From now on Iif it even LOOKS like any moisture will get near this watch I'm taking it off.

From what I have read, others are having the same problem. Seems to be a design issue. So if you are working out or in some situation where you would be sweating you might want to take it off. I hear it will dry out of you leave it off for a while.
Sorry to read of your troubles.
Many of us have a bit of adhesive tape covering the small vent hole behind the camera. This is found on the inside of the watch strap.
I have another it of adhesive ready to cover the speaker vents. That tape is usually just stored on the metal clasp. In the event I get caught in the rain (jogging) then I would quickly cover over the speaker.

Good move on your part, and glad you were in your return period.. IMO, that might have been from the spray, I did that on a vid camera and sure enough, it put some liquid inside the lens.. It was replaced by the manufacturer. I learn from that, NO SPRAY, I wipe..
