Something strange happened this morning.....
I was tapping the brightness button in the power widget to dim the screen.
The brightness button in the power control widget somehow switched modes.
It now shows an "A" inside the starburst. Automatic?????????? (see attached screen shot) and the brightness is stuck at medium.
And I can no longer change the brightness with the button or the brightness settings.
I can move the brightness slider back and forth and hit OK and the brightness won't change.
Nor can I turn Automatic Brightness on or off (although I don't know if this ever worked... I never used it).
I have no idea how this happened or how to get it back to normal.
?????????????????????
Fixed... with big hammer
I decided to do a factory reset to see if it would fix this... all my stuff is on an SD card and Google will restore all my apps.
This worked... the power widget is back to normal.

Does this happen to you guys? And can it be fixed?
Every so often the screen will shut off as I'm entering my pattern to unlock it.
Sometimes it'll turn off immediately after I wake it too. It's not a major problem but it gets annoying.
Sh** happens. While on 5.0.4.1 my swipe-unlock wouldn't work. Instead i could slide the sound off slider and then slide the unlock. I'm on the latest 5.0.5.1 now.. when I pres the home button (while I'm in some app) it comes back to home but there's no icons; only two dots below on the left & right, and the menu grid in the center.
When my phone times out (screen turns out) i turn the screen on by pressing home button (or any other button) but sometimes the screen turns on in a very low opacity brightness, and i cant use anything, touchscreen doesnt work. I see my home desktop but in a very low opacity. Normally it goes normally bright in a minute. But it's very annoying when i want to use my phone quickly. When this happens my battery is usually under 30%.
specs: s plus
ics cyanogenmod 9
castagnait kernel
"automatic brightness" is disabled
How do i fix this? please help
Last night, I decided to check out some of the new roms out for the droid 4 so I downloaded the avatar rom and tried it out. It worked fine except when I would lock my phone and put it into sleep mode, it wouldn't always wake up the screen when pressing the power button. The lights for the hard keys lit up, but not the screen. Then sometimes the screen would light up, but the touch screen wouldn't be active so I couldn't swipe to unlock. It usually takes between 5-10 tries until it finally works. I had the same problem with the AOKP rom as well.
I thought it might be the performance controls keeping the CPU too low when the screen was off and therefore having trouble waking it up so I set the minimum to 600 but that didn't help. Any ideas?
Also, slightly unrelated question but is there a way to turn off the transition animations for 4.2.2? I can't seem to find it :/

I have had similar issues with the 4.2.2 ROMs although not as often as you. It would happen to me maybe once a week. I would just hard reboot the phone when it happened. Not sure if it's an issue with the kexec kernel or what.
As for the transition animations I would assume they would be in the launcher settings somewhere.
Hello! I have strange problems with backlight
1) back light is turned off -- i can't see anything on the screen with the day light. Changing the brightness in Settings/Display don't help.
2) but, after power off+power on, backlight is OK for 10 seconds, and turns off right after that.
I find the guy with the same problem, but on droid 2 -- youtube.com/watch?v=RxHqN_lycG8
Btw, in "AP Fastboot" mode ("M" key+PowerOn), backlight is don't turn of.
I try some ROMs, they all don't work for me. Only "kexec CM10" ROM have one difference: if I turn the phone off and on, the backlight is turning on for the 1/2 of second, I can see the lock screen, and after that it is turned off...
What can it be? How can I fix it? Any ideas will be very appreciated! I very like my Droid3,and want it back

You'll have to try to turn the brightness up manually. It may be a broken light sensor. If you get in the right light you might be able to see the background and be able to turn it up.

In the dark room, I can see everything on the screen. Unfortunately, brightness in Settings/display does not affect the backlight on my device.
I set the brightness to the maximum, but it still too dark
Is it possible that the problem is in flexible cable?
Hello!
I wonder if anyone had this issue. Yesterday suddenly the backlight of my XT894 started to act weirdly. When i pressed the unlock button, the screen would go very bright and then shut off after 2-3 seconds, but I still could swype the unlock screen and hear the unlock click, even with the dark screen. With a little bit of external light I could see the image was there, but the backlight of the screen was not on. I went on to the power shortcuts and disabled the Automatic brightness control, and as soon as I did that the display turned on, very dimly but it turned on. When I set the brightness control to maximum, it still is very low. If i set the brightness to minimum, its almost impossible to see anything. In display settings, the automatic brightness is unchecked and the brightness fader is set to maximum.
I started suspecting the light sensor, so I went ahead and downlaoded a sensor tester app, and the light sensor appeared to be reporting the light levels correctly - low readings in the dark, and much higher readings in direct light.
Is my phone backlight dying? Any idea if this might be due to defective mainboard, or the display itself?
I already did some repairing on the phone myself, so I am comfortable dissassembling it and changing parts. Few months ago I changed the main board because my old one had a broken usb connector, and it worked fine until now.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Konstantin
If I remember right, by default, the maximum auto-brightness is still lower than actual maximum, so if the screen can barely be seen at manual max, it makes sense that the screen is pretty much unviewable with auto on.
Idea:
If you have it installed, boot into Safestrap and see if your brightness is normal.
If not, pull up the diagnostic menu (hold Vol - while powering on iirc, might be Vol - and +).
If your brightness is normal in those, it's probably something gone wonky in Android. If not, your screen backlight might be going and needs replaced. I don't think there's anything on the mainboard that would cause it, aside from the circuitry actually supplying power to the backlight...
Screen replacement actually isn't terrible for the D4, if it comes to that, since it's not fused to the glass (like certain single-piece phones for example...*sideways glance at the S3*).
Hello!
Thank you for your reply!
Effectively something is very wrong with the device. Today I woke up to find it completely unresponsive, had to turn it off by holding the power button for a while. When it turned on again, the whole screen was white with glitchy color lines since the very reboot, and nothing else happens, couldnt even turn it off without unscrewing the battery.
I will put the old main board to see if the other one died.
Thank you again!
Best regards,
Konstantin
