Unlock Bootloader / Unbrand rom - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I just bought a Sony Z1 C6903 with my carrier (Orange french) and without contract, the SIM is unlocked. I hate the rom provided by my carrier, it's never updated and there is a lot stuff added that give a poor UI experience. So, I want to be able to change my ROM, I mean I want to remove all the stuff that my carrier added by using a stock or AOSP rom but I cannot find a way to do it.
If someone can help me to do that, I will be very grateful.

You dont even need to unlock the bootloader to debrand.
Try using the flashtool found at flashtool.net and not the official Sony one and all will be good

You can still flash and ROOT.. do customisation.. etc..

one thing that the official flashtool that sony provide lacks is that you have to have a unlocked bootloader in order to use it. now you can unlock the bootloader but there is a known issue where if you do it breaks the camera functionality. what you can do is use this version of the flashtool which you can use even if your bootloader is locked (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2439328) (see part 4). you can now download the prefered firmware from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459365)...

He can but he's using the Sony flavour of flashtool and that only works with unlocked bootloader and he can't as the phone says bootloader unlock allowed status no

UNLOCK BOOTLOADER ALLOWED: NO
Then guess what, you CANNOT unlock the bootloader. It is currently impossible!!!
As has been said, you can still root, install a partial working recovery (See in the dev thread) and flash stock FTF's using flashtool.
Seems that the Z1 has brought a lot of new people to Sony away from Samsung and HTC.
These are long standing issues with Sony and those of us with lots of Sony experience understand this. I do welcome all the new people, feel free to PM me if you need any sony help

Thanks to all of you, I now have a stock up-to-date rom directly from sony and it's a really good thing!

That's my case, I'm coming from Samsung and HTC, do you know if I will be able in a near future to install Cyanogen with a loocked bootloader?

No, CM roms require a custom kernel, hence they need an unlocked bootloader

LT30p firmware on LT30at keeping LTE support

Okay people now that I have been able to create a stock AT&T LT30at ftf file: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0ByrrmqPijqISREZpSE16bWdKV1E I went ahead with testing if I could flash a generic LT30p firmware on my LT30at EXCLUDING the baseband so I could keep LTE.
I used the LT30p firmware version 7.0.A.3.195 generic and flashed it through flashtools wiping everything but excluding the baseband. By doing this I was able to keep LTE support and have a generic unbranded firmware. I then restored all my apps using the included backup & restore app ( I had manually installed it on the LT30at firmware previously)

Is there any way to root then? According to Jozinek's method we have to unlock the bootloader and that's not possible with the TL.

You can root officially via the sony official method. Then you can flash custom kernel.

Unlock the bootloader to flash custom kernels. Use this method from the official sony website, then flash the advanced stock kernel which has root.
This should work unless AT&T have done somethg nasty, in which case why do you bother with that provider, just change to another company

Ouch, why would you get an AT&T phone then.....with no prospect of community unlock (Test point is not a viable method) then it seems unless you can get a dev to work on root you are stuck. And I think that will be a low priority for devs atm. As far as I know Bin4ryhas not worked on it since it came it...so you may be stuck with it.

Unfortunately AT&T is the only carrier in the US that sells Sony phones. Also Sony hasn't released an unlocked Xperia T for the US and I doubt they will since it's exclusive to AT&T right now.

That site is wrong. The LTE equipped TL is not available unlocked anywhere "yet". Sony is talking about releasing and unlocked unbranded TL in the US but.its just talk right now.

AT&T sucks in this regard. I have their xperia play phone that came out more the a year ago and still today only way to unlock bootloader is via setool2.

They said the same thing about the ion. 2 months ago I was on sonystyle.com and almost ordered the ion, but called and talked to a rep, and told me "not unlocked yet". He took my particulars so they can call me when the unlocked one became available. Needless to say..........

They hadn't been talking about unlocked ion at least not the US market. I have a friend at Sony that deals US Xperia sales. TL is being talked about though. But its not his decision that comes from higher ups. Hopefully they do. Of course for the ion you could always buy a lt28i (though no support in the US) for the TL it isn't that simple as the T doesn't have LTE like the TL.

Thanks for all the effort your putting in for the community here. I'd like to get all the AT&T software on the phone and this sounds like they way to do it. How do you exclude the baseband when your flashing?

In flashtools just before you start the flash there is a check box on the right that says exclude baseband. Just check that.

If it doesn't require a custom kernel then sure. If not then no. I don't know anything about MIUI so I can't say for sure.

I just got a Samsung Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959V).
I went through a factory-wipe, update to 2.3.6, root, custom kernel, CM7 install, and now on CM9. It seems to work fine. Except I'm on AT&T!
I just purchased your app. I will try it out in a few hours. If it works, I'll leave a positive review here and on the Play store.

Thank you, but if you're already using your SGH-T959V successfully on AT&T it means that your phone is already unlocked and don't need to attempt to unlock again.

I was *not* using it on AT&T, that is why I bought your app.
The phone was locked to T-Mobile. When I put in my AT&T SIM, it asked for a SIM PIN or something.
With the T-Mobile SIM inserted, I ran your app, wrote down the number, put my AT&T SIM in, typed in the number, then it said "Network Unlocked" (or something like that).
Does this mean the device is unlocked for ANY GSM network (such as Bell or Rogers), or was it telling me that it was unlocked for just the AT&T SIM?

It should work with any compatible GSM network that uses a full-sized SIM card.
Hi, quick question about your App.
There will be soon the SGS4G Google Edition. It will be available only for AT&T and T-Mobile.
I'm from Belgium and I planned to buy the phone during my holidays in the U.S.
Do you think your app will work in this case and unlock the carrier ?

Whoever decided to name the phone the Galaxy S 4G picked a bad name. The phone this app is designed for came out in 2011 (SGH-T959V or SGH-T959W), so it will not work on the new 2013 Galaxy S 4.

I used to convert avi files from my cheap camera to latest space conscious mp4 h264 on the gt i9000 with official ROM CM10.1 rc5 but often with big files it just slow down, freeze and restart, which parameters of CPU and RAM should I fine tune to achieve video transcoding done? (actually Roman 10 1.5.6)

I temporarily rooted with z4mod 1.4 but antivirus alert me of Lena virus, I ignored it but I loose connection shortly using Internet in places never lost before.

This is a native android application available from Google Play, not a flashable zip file.
Are you sure you're using an SGH-T959V or SGH-T959W

You offered aside your Google Play apk also a zip file in your other thread but I was asking how can I flash it if not rooted ask for zip signature.
About the conversion of videos now I have better results with Mackay ROM, must install yet the latest 2.11.4.

Failed to replace stock recovery now get only there.
Hi, similar situation please help.
From stock 2.1 I rooted with King root Chinese zip then to go for a new ROM I renamed a cwm zip in update.zip and I read replacing stock recovery..... and saw this cwm just a couples of times, as it revert to stock recovery and doesn't switch on anymore, show grey battery logo fixed when charging, and now after removing the battery for long it goes in stock recovery se2 , cleaned cache and data but nothing change.
Is there please a solution without PC?

I´ve purchased one SGH-T959V from Tmobile from ebay. I´ve done the "return to stock rom", root and installed the busybox. When I´ve purchased your app, it downloads but apperas an error message:
Couldnt install on USB storage or SD card.
I´ve tried to install another apps, and they´re installed succesfully.
Could you tell me what can I try?

Odd way to unlock bell xperia z or t-mobile xperia z bootloader?

I own both the bell version of the xperia z, and the T-Mobile version. I ONLY want to use them as glorified tablets. Basically like the Ipod touch version of the iPhone, I want to use them unactivated. For me, its all about customibility and I really want to unlock the bootloader. Sorry, you can't unlock the bootloader if a device says: "bootloader unlock allowed: no" which is if you have a branded device. If you try it, you'd better throw it away.
If u can root everything is possible. As long as there's someone who provide geeky solutions
And under your situation u don't need flash different rom as there's a way to install recovery without unlocked bootloader in rooted phone.

I don't have your phones so I cannot guaranty but you can try my method.
I got a c6603 from vodafone, and use ota to update to 4.3.
Since the 4.3 cannot root and I dont want unlock bl. so I use these steps
1. downgrade phone by flashtool to a version which can be rooted.
2. root
3. install recovery in locked BL:

4. Choose whatever rom you like and flash it.
DONE!
You cannot use custom kernels on a locked bootloader, so you cannot run CM, PA, AOSP etc.
Stock based roms only. There's no way around it.

Why no 4.4.2 yet?

Recently bought a genuine UK SIM-free/unlocked HTC One (M7) online. Noticed that the Android OS is still stuck to 4.3.
I thought Android 4.4.2 is now available to UK customers for unlocked handsets? And what are the improvements to the phone?

What CID does it say? For UK unbranded, unlocked handsets it's HTC__001. I got the update just fine.

My CID is : VODAP001. That seems to suggest it is originally a Vodaphone-locked device but it has been unlocked since.
My i know what's my next move?

Same here, I'm from Croatia and have T-Mobile De version, but still can't update.
I've contacted HTC and they removed 4.4.2. update in some places. They'll roll it out again later, probably with Sense 6. We'll have to be patient until then

Reason why both of you don't have the update yet is because your CID and software is locked to the previous carrier, meaning it's up to them to release the update, not HTC.
This will wipe your phone, but it will unbrand your phone if you follow it correctly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358738
This basically flashes the unbranded version of the ROM and changing the CID to one that HTC does support, so you'll get updates directly from HTC instead of the carrier.
Sorry but right now i'm not prepared to unbrand the phone as it seems to me its too much of a long & winding process. Seeing the link seems too technical for me.
What i have done instead is ring HTC. Gave them the serial number of the phone and they told me that it IS Vodafone-branded phone. They adviced me to contact Vodafone which i did. The Vodafone support person doesn't seem to have a clue to what i'm saying and seems not familiar to how updates are released. He kept on insisting (based on the circumstances i have presented to him|) that Vodafone has nothing to do with updates. Person sounded stupid really.
I tried a Three and an EE SIM card on the One M7 and it works. So far no updates yet.
I can also confirm that being an unlocked phone it has NO Vodafone branding or logo or apps or bloatware on the phone itself.
So, i'm stuck with a year old phone with a old-gen Android OS.
So...what's next please?

According to this, every KitKat with Sense 5.5 for One is out. But as I said, some carriers removed the update. Also, some carriers have already released Sense 6. I hope that we'll see direct update to Sense 6 in a month or two

Still, i feel not confident with what information/advice HTC and Vodafone has given me as i feel i have been passed around.

To install OTA updates, your phone MUST be stock (ROM and recovery)
sim unlocked or bootloader unlocked is OK

I have explained many times that my phone is unlocked & SIM free albeit being Vodafone-branded.
So, it still doesn't answer my question: why no Android 4.4.2 for my phone?
I've read an article that One is getting Sense 6 update today! (for unlocked devices). My is branded to T-Mobile, but I hope that I'll get the update until the end of the month
Because the software is still modified slightly by Vodafone. You may have the phone network unlocked but it doesn't mean it's software unbranded. It's still up to Vodafone to update it. To be honest, this sounds more like a second hand handset instead, perhaps the original owner got it for free from an upgrade, unlocked it, and then sold it on as he was probably using another phone.
Vodafone customer support won't know anything, they're not taught anything technical, only the network side of things, which is why they can't answer you.
Honestly, you should just unlock and S-OFF the phone, and change it to a proper unbranded model if you want to get the latest updates from HTC.

But why should i get the phone unlocked as its already unlocked in the first place as i'm able to put an SIM on it?
And what do you mean by S-OFF? Is that term called "debranding?
When I mean unlock, I mean bootloader unlocking, which is different from network unlocking and allows you to flash other ROMs.
S-OFF allows you to change the CID, which is needed if you want to receive updates for another version of the HTC One, such as the unbranded version.
I have four years of owning and using an Android phone. Never been a developer or have IT skills or been into rooting phones. I consider myself somewhere above an intermediate user and under expert level.
So, it easy to unlock the bootloader and S-OFF my HTC One M7?
WIll it almost guarantee me i'll still be able to receive the Android 4.4.2 update and (perhaps) beyond?

I've rooted and s-off every phone, but few months after purchase, when I got bored with stock.
If you are doing this for the first time, even though you have good tutorials, it still won't be easy for you. I don't know anything about rooting M7 because I have it for a week, but it probably isn't so easy as it looks like, and it will take you few hours to do it (maybe days if you screw something).
If you unbrand your phone than yes, you will definitely be able to update to 4.4.2. But you need to know that if you do that, you will void your warranty for an almost new phone.
My recommendation: since I've seen that Sense 6 is already out for some carriers in US, it will probably be available in the Europe soon. So be patient and wait for a few weeks, and you'll probably receive direct update to 4.4.2 and Sense 6.

4.19.161.10 was released in Feb
Maybe if you search you can find the OTA file somewhere on the net and apply it manually, or check with vodafone, why you're not receiving it.

[Q] T-Mobile's own unlock code does not work?

I bought a used (unrooted, AFAIK) Xperia Z (Android 4.3) and have used it on T-Mobile's own prepaid plan for the better part of the last year. I recently moved (back) to Europe and requested the unlock code from T-Mobile and upon confirming the IMEI they provided it with no qualms. However, it turns out the damned code does not unlock the phone ("could not unlock network").
I have tried four (4) different non-T-Mobile SIM cards from three (3) different local carriers. I have tried to delete all content and hard reset the device. I have tried to update the firmware (no available updates). Nothing seems to work. Please provide your thoughts and suggestions?

Can you give us more informations? Model number? Did you send IMEI from the bottom of device? Try to check IMEI with *#06#, maybe IMEI is not the same as on the bottom (changed motherboard).
Are you sure the phone was locked to the T-Mobile network?

The IMEI # when doing the number combination matches the number on the underside of the phone.
Actually, that is a valid point. I know for a fact that it's a T-Mobile device, but the previous owner could possibly have unlocked it himself. But then again, I can only assume it would've worked with my other SIM, and I wouldn't have had this problem?

Did you check SIM slot? Maybe it is damaged. What message did you get when you insert your SIM card?

Sorry to say this, but yeah, it looks that way. The previous owner tried to unlock it 10 times and now it's unlockable. Maybe there is another way, but I really doubt it.
That's horrible news. I can't even get past it by rooting the phone? :crying:

Maybe you can try in Sony repair center, if anyone can unlock that device, they can, believe me. :good:

It depends. Unbranded, unlocked handsets say 0 because they're already unlocked.
If it says [X] Network 0, then it's locked. If there's no X in the square brackets, then it's unlocked.

Yes, you can root. You can't unlock the bootloader on a C6606 though. It's permanently locked. This isn't connected to the network lock though.

Yes. My bootloader is currently locked and I have root. Depending which version of Android you're running, it's easy to root. If you're on 4.4.2, just use towelroot. If you updated to 10.5.1.A.0.283 (4.4.4) via an FTF, then it's slightly more complicated. Guide here.
