so search is still down. i know at the at&t store only a few of the backs are soft touch. but i have seen things here and there around the web that says they are all soft touch. since i finally got my code to replace my rma device, i am wondering if the bright colored backs are also soft/grippy. because i would much rather have one of those.
thanks for your input,
patrick
They are all soft touch but the colored ones are a little different than the kevlar. It is barely noticeable but the colored ones are a tad bit softer. All of them feel great though.

Just to clarify and prevent confusion, the weave backs on the Moto X is NOT kevlar. It's just a weave pattern, with a weave mesh on the inside to provide rigidity. Its material is made out of the same polycarbonate as the MotoMaker colored backs.

yah anandtech or some site like that said the weave is kevlar. i already owned a woven black. its definitely not kevlar. just saying... all it takes is one site to put out some misinformation.thanks for clarifying though.
i went to the at&t store to checfk out the display with all the colored backs. and the white / black weave ones feel a little different, like they have some sort of soft touch coating compared to the solid colors.
Actually, not all the backs feel the same. The brighter colored backs (Turquoise, Cherry, Lemon Lime, Violet, & Raspberry) have a description that say "Vibrant color with a smooth finish; made of scratch resistant material", the darker colors (Crimson, Cabernet, Navy, Olive, Royal Blue) say "Rich matte color with a soft, non slip finish; made of scratch resistant material", and the really light colors (Spearmint, Mint, Blush) say "Lightly tinted color with a clean and smooth finish; made of scratch resistant material"
So yeah, the only ones with soft touch are Crimson, Cabernet, Navy, Olive, and Royal Blue. Its pretty easy to miss the texture description. It's all faded out.

well aint that a pisser. i just ordered a spearmint. thanks for clearing it up. im about to head to the site and try to find the descriptions. it is so obvious and right there in the face. it is faded. but there is no excuse for me not to have seen it with as many times as i have been on the site. i really liked the feel of my woven black. i should have gone with olive orange or royal orange royal red. DAMMIT! now i have to go through this rma thing all over again. what a nightmare.

lol, sorry man
If it makes you feel any better I have Spearmint and it's not terrible feeling. It has a kind of matte texture to it but it's smooth. Kind of hard to describe. It's smooth but definitely not as slippery as shiny plastic or glass.
Also, we live ridiculously close haha. Nice to know I'm not the only person in TN with a Moto X

We do don't we. My brother is also in Hendersonville with one. That is three down.... 300k to go. Lol
OK. So I got my green in today. Its not as bad as I thought it would be. And the looks of it way overcomes the lack of non slip. Like you said... Its got a little grip to it and its not slippery.

do you mean smooth vs. woven? others have posted that the non-woven backs are actually more tacky than the woven ones.
Well right now I have royal blue, which is described on Moto Maker as "soft nonslip." Woven black has the same description.
Mint, however, says "clean and smooth."
maybe that's just a description. vzw has the backs displayed like a peacock. they all had the same rubberized coating. if you want/need additional tack, you could always get a case.
A case is not an option. Just looking for opinions on people who have held and used both.
The smooth backs are definitely more slippery. The are a harder plastic without any kind of soft touch/rubberized feel to them.
I have the Dev Edition with the woven back and I gotta say that it's pretty slippery. I can't compare to the solid colored backs because I've never held one in my hand. Just chiming in that the woven backs are pretty slippery. It really surprised me because in the pictures, the woven back looks like it would be more 3D; like they would have the actual feel of a back made of woven materials instead of just a paint job to look like it. I know that was the point, it just took me by surprise is all.
Interesting, and unfortunate. I wonder if the black woven back has a different texture than the white woven, because the black says soft non-slip.
Not that I want the black woven back. I guess I'll be avoiding the Dev edition *and* the Mint back. Too bad.
I have not felt the white woven back, but the black one is pretty grippy (much more so than the light colored smooth backs). They are not painted, but actually woven. The pattern comes from some translucency in the plastic that shows the underlying fibers.
If you go to a carrier store, they usually will have a black woven back and most of the colors that you can feel.

Yeah the black woven is pretty grippy. Almost rubbery.
My wife's blush (the light pink) back is smoother and less grippy.
Black and white woven feel completely different. I have both. White woven is smooth, hard, and slippery. Black woven feels like silky rubber if that makes sense. It's not super grippy, but definitely more grippy than the white woven.
Just read the descriptions for each color on Motomaker. It says which ones are soft touch and which are hard / smooth.

Went to an ATT store and felt the different backs. The darker colors seem to be more grippy. I made a note that: Olive, Navy, Royal Blue, Black, Cabernet and Crimson were the ones with grip. Not sure about the woven ones.

I was just at Best Buy and this is definitely the case. The non-slip colors have a rubbery texture that the smooth ones lack. White woven does not have it. That said, it seems to be just as tacky with a light touch.
Thanks.

Yeah, the hard, smooth colors can occasionally be tacky. If your hands are warm, a little clammy, have a bit of moisture on them, the hard, smooth backs stick pretty well. If your hands are cold or dry though, they can be very slippery.
Thanks, that's a good point. I'll probably go "reverse-dev-edition" with a woven black back and white front, with blue accents.
So,
I had a white Incipio case for my G2. I work in a machine shop and constantly have oily hands. My white case looked like crap, with brown staining from oily hands and oily pants pockets.
I went to the grocery store and bought a package of black, RIT fabric dye for $2.49. This dye is designed for dying fabric, including synthetic (plastic) fibers. I figured why wouldn't it dye my synthetic phone case?
I put the black dye powder in a disposable pan and poured in 2 cups of almost boiling water. This is a much stronger mix than the package recommends. I degreased and cleaned my case with isopropyl alcohol. Stirred it with a plastic spoon and dropped the back of the case in. In about 20 seconds the case was jet black. Took it out and rinsed it with cold water while wiping it with a clean sponge to get any dye off the surface. It worked great. RIT also comes in many other colors. If you want to try a different color than black I'd recommend a weaker mix, so you can control the color intensity better. I think most colors dyed at this strength would be so saturated they would look almost black if left in the dye for too long. Do a quick dip and rinse, if you want it bolder, dip and rinse again You can always add more color but cant take it off.
I think the soft touch coating absorbs color very easily, whether it's from your pocket or a pan of dye. I would think any phone with a soft touch surface would dye easily. A non soft surface would probably also take the dye, but would take longer to deepen in color, hotter water works better for plastic. The clear plastic spoon I used is now tinted, but not jet black. Good luck, Too bad I already decided on black. Now I want to try a fade. I think the black back with the gray silicone looks pretty stealthy. An olive drab green would look cool with the gray too. The case looks and feels the same as it did before. It's just black now. It worked amazingly well.
Niceee

Thanks for the idea! I've been wanting a nice red case for my Verizon G2 and couldn't find anything.

Gonna try this. I got the exact same case and after a whole it just begins to look ugly.

Durability report OP?
back in the 80's and 90's when radio control cars (competitive kits, not Tyco stuff) where made of white nylon we used to dye the parts with this same dye. there's was absolutely no adverse effects.
Wonder if this eventually will start to dye my pockets after a while?
I have a royal blue incipio case. Not sure how color blending would do.

Nice results. What strength did you mix the dye, and how long did you let the case soak?

If you go to Rit Dye's website they have a section with different formulas depending on the color you want. I started out using Cool Red #146 and made adjustments till I got color I liked, so I don't have an exact formula. As for amount of soak time I just kept checking every 20 seconds or so.
Cool! I shall try this.
I am having a hard time choosing the looks. Although I prefer white phones, I think with an amoled screen black probably looks better, since it can make the screen look almost bezelless especially with darker background.
For the back I would like something durable and something which protects the phone in drops etc. I think leather or bamboo would be best suited but bamboo doesn't look good with a dark front and leather could scuff easily.
Anyway what are the ideas and experiences (with the original motor x) of you all?
i want to get the black front with black leather, but i read somewhere that the black leather is an in the store only option. i really hope not, i was thinking about some hints of blue.
Black with the cognac leather back. I'd prefer it in white but all the sensors being in black ruins the look for me.
I have a white face on the previous moto and this time I'll go black so it covers up all the sensors. As for the back, not sure. I have royal blue so I'll probably go a bit darker. I'm going to be a bit more bold on the accents instead of silver

is the white bad looking? this will be my first white face phone. it looked fine in pics, but that doesn't always translate in person. I am just wondering if those sensors will make the phone look aesthetically unpleasing
edit: I'm going for the black. like the user above me said, the sensors will be visible, so not that good. and black looks more classier
I was thinking about getting a Moto X 2014 and was wondering what the plastic back cover is like?
I do not want the leather since it quick gets used and not into wood so plastic is the default choice for me.
I could find any details as to the Moto X 2014 back plastic cover feels, looks like up close and is it sued like or is it a hard plastic feel like the 2013?
Did anyone order the back cover in plastic and how is it?
I have the black back and it has a soft touch coating. It has a mild rubbery feel too it almost. It's great.

Do you find the phone quite slippery to hold?
Its nice to hold but it feels way to easy to drop. I was hoping the black back would have been a bit more grippy.

Exactly! I found it to be an ideal material for phone because it's very solid, not prone to scratches and far more durable than leather or wood.
And it's look good, not cheap. This is not plastic, like iPhone 3gs back but polycarbonate.

Thanks for seconding that it solid not cheap and well made. I thinking of going all "White" on the Moto X! Kind of had it with the all black models. LOL! I might be sorry and be clean it a lot but it suppose to be a trendy type phone anyways - fashion and all so I going go all out - fashion wise! Of course; when I order; I probably be conservative and go all black again! That the only two colors I know; so motomaker does not seem to change my mind any!

I went all black with mine, but I'm thinking about exchanging it for black leather with either green or blue accents. I'm kinda getting tired of all black phones too.
I went all black : because you cannot see sensors of the front side. White model looks ugly because of this.
Plastic is solid

Got mine today. White/white. Not slippery.
I'm coming from an S4, and this feels much more solid and permanent. Feels thicker, but of course I don't know that, because I can't take off the back. But it certainly does not feel cheap, compared to the S4. (Maybe not a fair comparison, as S4's back was made to come off, which I liked. So for me it's a trade off.)
When the Nexus 5 came out, the white variant was a harder, more plastic feel while the black was more of a softer material. Is this the same for the Nexus 6?
No. The Blue is a fingerprint magnet but once you get it greased up pretty good it looks uniform & not too bad.

I have the blue and it doesn't feel like either of the N5s. More like a hard plastic. Was really hoping for that soft touch that the N5 and N7 have. Like the previous poster was saying, it just absorbs any kind of grease or dirt you may have on your hand. I don't think I've ever seen any device absorb dirt so badly.
Yes, the blue one sucks up any oil from your skin, as well as the oil from the skin of anyone who's ever stood closer than 6 feet from you in your entire life. I'm pretty sure there's some worm-hole magic involved. That's the only thing that really explains the staggering number of fingerprints it can absorb in just a few minutes of use.
I ordered a D-Brand Skin for mine (Black Titanium). I saw a review on it, and the reviewer was impressed with how much grip it added. Plus, he was constantly pawing all over the phone the entire review, and I never could see one fingerprint.
