Updated (v2) Slow recovery bootup fixed.
This is an unofficial version of CWM Advanced/PhilZ Touch recovery. Main thread located HERE. Go to the main thread to learn about all the features.
It uses the zImage and ramdisk provided by @ketut.kumajaya with a few tweaks to get it working made by myself.
Please take a moment to say thanks and/or donate to @ketut.kumajaya for helping us out.
It takes a few seconds longer for CWM based recoveries to boot than the stock recovery, so be patient.
Credits go to:
@Phil3759 for the advanced features
@ketut.kumajaya for the working zImage
and of course Koush and the CyanogenMod team

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the on-screen menu doesn't show, hit one of the up/down buttons at the bottom to get it to appear. This is the same issue seen with CWM recovery and is caused by booting into recovery with the key combo. I highly recommend using the Quick Boot app or another software method of booting recovery.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Instructions:
1. Download ODIN on your computer.
2. Power off the device.
3. Restart in "Download Mode" by holding the "HOME" button, "Volume Down" and "Power" all at the same time (for about 5 seconds).
4. Hit the "Volume Up" to enter download mode.
5. Start the ODIN exe program. Un-check Auto Reboot. See notes about ODIN below.
6. Connect the device via USB to your computer. Verify the device shows as "Added" in the Message box. If it doesn't show then you need the Samsung USB drivers (just install KIES to get them).
7. Select "PDA" then choose the recovery file you want to flash.
8. Hit "START". Wait for Odin to finish (~10-15 seconds). The message area will display "RES OK" when finished.
9. Wait for device to restart. Skip this step if you unchecked auto reboot.
10. Restart directly to recovery mode before rebooting into OS.(Hold POWER, Volume UP, and the HOME button all at the same time. When you see the Samsung Logo, let go of the POWER button, but keep holding the Volume UP and HOME until you see the recovery screen).
11. To get the Internal SDcard to be recognized properly, choose the Advanced option; then touch the "Storage set to" option. It should change from "/data/media/0" to "data/media/". Then reboot recovery using the "Power Options".
I also recommend adjusting the Menu Height to a smaller value using the PhilZ settings option.
Notes about ODIN
--Make sure that "Re-Partition" is NOT checked.
--Auto Reboot can be un-checked if the recovery doesn't flash correctly on your device. Some have reported that un-checking Auto Reboot fixes this issue. If you un-check Auto Reboot, you will need to reboot the device yourself (refer back to step 10).
Instructions for recovery flashable version:
Boot into your previously installed custom recovery.
Select the Install Zip option.
Find the recovery zip.
Flash.
Reboot recovery.
Enjoy your new recovery.

I'm not sure what you mean about the time. It is not supposed to be in the status bar on the lock screen, and that has nothing to do with this recovery.

In regards to it reacting slowly, since you complained about that with TWRP also, I believe that is a problem with your tablet. I can't imagine it working any faster on mine. Every selection is immediate.
Keep increasing the gui height until it goes to a lower value (around 100 it switches).

Some other users also experienced slow reaction with latest TWRP. I used TWRP 2.5.0.0 and speed and reaction was ok, on 2.6.xx reaction is slow...
Awesome job. Like how this is all coming together slowly for this tablet...

Hi, i have a t217A tab 3 7.0 and it has a msm8960 cpu not the msm8930 you mentioed earlier, which shows up under cpuz as a Krait 1.73 gighz
when i boot to recovery it says encrypted and the flash fails. im guessing i need a diffrent version. is there a current build for the touch screen recovery for this version already made and in place ? if so could someone link me ?
and i had a q , you mention that this should be flashed via already flashed recovery , is this mandatory or can i flash the touch version via odin straight away ? do i need to flash the regular non touch recovery then flash the touch or can i get away with directly flashing the touch recovery without first flashing the non touch?
I have rooted already , the method on this forum worked for the t217A
thanks

I find my newly purchased tab 8.9 very laggy with the stock TouchWiz
Before returning it I wanted ti try the Overcome rom to see if it can get any smoother.
I carefully followed there instructions but I am unable to go past the downloading droid. once I validate with the right button volume, the tablet simply reboots.
Does anyone else have this issue?

Let me get this right: you sucessfully flashed Overcome, and want to ODIN but when you try to get in Download Mode, it reboots, is that it? If so, that's the first time I've heard this issue. How are you trying to enter Download Mode?

I see. The Overcome thread also has the CWM Recovery as a .zip file which is flashable through Stock Recovery (same procedure as flashing Root). You just put the file in your internal SDcard and flash away. If you still have doubts, read a little bit here, as I'm sure that will clear any doubts you might have.

Don't expect perfection from a port, ever (port = a ROM that's not native to the device). The motley kernel, along with UV can help you in the battery department.

My system right now is a stock ROM us retail P7310UEKHA flashed with CWM and CWM and I want to install a 3.2 stock ROM using ODIN.
The way I try to access the download menu is
1. Turn off the tab
2. wait 30 sec
3. restart with the down volume pressed
4. when the reaching the menu between recovery and dowloading. Select dowloading with the down volume button and validate with the up volume button.
Result: a black screen for 3 seconds and then the tab reboots

Thanks lupu666ro. I've tried installing stock Rom with CMW but nothing works. I have found very sparse info about nvflash. It looks like the solution but I'm a bit wary about tring this without a instructions. Could give me more info or point me to a tutorial
Thanks!
Still no luck...
So I have tried reflashing the stock US retail ROM and ran the EULA3 OTA update over it. I can't seem to figure this out.
The OTA update entered the download mode for a few seconds during the update so I am wondering if I don't simply have a locked bootloader.
I have made a video to show the problem: http://youtu.be/b09-x31ldbs

First thank you for all the wonderful work there to help us make the best out of this phone.
Yesterday, I tried to install the CM10 ROM (cm-10-20121126-UNOFFICIAL-ancora_tmo) but encountered a serious problem. Since I flashed a custom ROM last time in Aug., I haven't updated the recovery (CWM-base Recovery v5.5.0.4b). When I booted into the recovery, I found it lost all its functionality. To be specific, any selection on menu options (reboot system now, ROMwipe, wipe cache, etc.) yielded no result but a screen with a circling arrow covered by a hat. After that only the power button worked and it would simply bring you back to the main menu. I tried to communicate with the phone in ADB mode and it worked (by that I mean I can reboot it from windows command shell: adb reboot recovery). Now I have no way to update the recovery and install new ROM from there.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
If you can communicate via windows then install Odin and flash from it. Full instructions is on the wiki page

I'd followed the instruction and found the Odin rebooted to the exact recovery! There it showed a few lines like:
Galaxy Exhibit CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4b
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifying update package ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Now the phone can not boot into the original ROM.
When booted into recovery use volume keys to navigate in cwm. Also retry to download the ROM and try cwm before Odin.
Odin is on computer and phone is hooked via USB cable. It cannot boot into cwm if followed Odin. You ha e to download Odin and drivers for cell to be recognized.
Do a YouTube search for Odin and watch the vid it will show you. Be it noted that cell will need to be set into download mode and USB enabled.

Yes, I used the home capacitive to select those options on the main menu. No matter what I choose, however, the power button can get me the circling arrow with a hat. Another push on the button, you are back on the main menu.
You are deffeinitly booted into cwm so I suspect from the install error that the signature verification is what's failing. Try another ROM or redownload and try again

I've redownloaded the uvlg3.odin.zip package and checked its MD5. Everything is OK. Then followed the instruction on the Wiki page, but ended on the same CWM recovery screen with the same error message.
The problem is: it seems like the phone boots successfully into the recovery, but it only shows the main menu with no option functioning (like I described before).
Has anyone read about similar problem anywhere before?

Just successfully flashed OUDHS CWM-based Recovery 1.0.3.0 successfully...haven't tried much of the functionality until I fix my phone from the bootloop I put it in.
Something I did notice while navigating around the menu using my volume keys was that the screen was only refreshing every other keypress. I know that the state of the program was changing but the screen was only redrawing every other input.

confirmed test 3 did not fix the touch screen issue. cwm will sometimes double click and is tricky to navigate with the graphics issue but functions normally otherwise. did a full wipe and restore booted fine both times with no permissions issues. this was garwyns version btw.

After you get the custom recovery working, you can flash the latest SuperSu zip to get root.
Your internal SDcard will get mounted as "/data/media". So look there for any files saved to the internal card.
Notes about ODIN
--Make sure that "Re-Partition" is NOT checked.
--Auto Reboot can be un-checked if TWRP doesn't flash correctly on your device.
Flash at own risk!!!!

Thanks for the report, will look into it.
Hey @ketut.kumajaya, it seems the touchscreen needs to be rotated for this one. I would attempt to fix it, but we all know you can do it much, much better (and I don't want to start all over without your kernel source)
EDIT: I used the new zImage from the 1.8 T210(R) version in my T210(R) TWRP and the touchpoints are off in it as well. Looks like the previous touch orientation fix you made got overwritten with the new update.
Looks like it only needs to be rotated clockwise 90 degrees (not flipped, just rotated).

Did you set the touchscreen orientation to landscape?
Code:
write /sys/devices/virtual/sec/tsp/orientation 6

Not true...your internal SDcard is mounted as "/data/media". Navigate to that folder and you will find everything on your internal card. You will have to hit the "Up one level" button to find it.
EDIT: I will add a note to the OP about this.
Now that there's root and recovery, has anyone flashed a successful ROM for the T211?

Could you give some more info? Did you do a factory reset? What ROM exactly did you flash? Why don't you just wait that someone answers your question?

With it a couple of minutes and see if you get the options.
I'm using omni ROM 4.4 since nov2013. This all started when I flashed the 050514 build. I did not do factory reset because i'm using omnirom before
I waited for a few minutes. Still nothing goes to teamwin logo then black screen then teamwin logo then black screen over and over

Download philz XXLTA tar kernel file and flash using odin, uncheck auto reboot. . Power off and boot into recovery. Then flash raw kernel and flash your ROM again.

I am more or less a noob so I need very precise instructions if I am to follow your advice.
I have a rooted N7000 running Asylum Omnirom 4.4.2. (Omni version 4.4.2-20140318-Asylum-N7000, Baseband N7000XXLT3 Kernel version 3.0.64-666-g5984047 [email protected] #1 Tue Mar 18 05:29:00 CET 2014 Asylum Omni Build omni_n7000-userdebug 4.4.2 KVT49L Eng.chasmodo.20140318.045429 test-keys)
I have TWRP on it (unsure of the version - all the software I used to root my phone is on my external harddrive at home.). This morning it was working fine but then rebooted unexpectedly. When it powered back on, it got stuck at the Samsung screen, so I rebooted but it was still stuck so I pulled the battery to reboot. No good, still in bootloop. So went into recovery mode and did factory reset/wipe data. It started but saw no progress whatsoever (i.e. no blue colour overtaking the grey along the spinning bar showing it was progressing along). I had to do some other things so left it plugged into the wall charger (battery was at about 78% when it rebooted but I did have both bluetooth and wifi running so that could really drain it). When I returned about 40 minutes later it was back at the Samsung screen. Now if I try to go into recovery, I get the TEAMWIN splash screen but it never goes beyond that. Tried pulling the battery, sim card, SD card, and various combinations. Tried a different battery, tried all sorts of variations I found searching but none have gotten me either past the Samsung screen if I try to boot up normally, or past the TEAMWIN screen if I try to boot into recovery.
I found this thread from last year and I am hoping this will work for my situation. However, I have never used ODIN (it seems to be there if I do the Volume down-power-home combination) so I want to make sure I understand this precisely. When you say flash the raw kernel, what precisely are you referring to? When I originally rooted my phone I just followed a YouTube video and don't recall having a "raw kernel". So I need some guidance as to what you mean by this, please.
Thanks

Search for Philz thread for N7000.. go to the 3rd post where it says TW kernels and download the xxtla kernel.. download odin 1.85 from google. Make sure you have Samsung usb drivers installed.. If not, google that too and download from Samsung developer site. Install it.. Make sure you have no kies processes running in the task manager.
Boot the phone in download mode and connect to PC. open odin as admin. (watch Youtube video for how to flash using odin)
Select the kernel file in PDA and uncheck the autoreboot option..
flash.. Once you get a green pass or res ok.. remove the cable and remove the battery.
Boot into recovery by pressing the vol up+home+home (obviously put the battery back in)
You should get Philz recovery.. Check and proceed from there.
