[Q] max size sd card using cm10.1 - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Ok reading over and over and have not seen this one asked.
If I use cm10.1.3 can I use a larger sd card say 64g or can it only still use a 32g? Also what specs of card do I need over my head since I never use sd cards for anything. This is the hd+

You can use any size you want, even 64GB. The best SD to use with the HD+ is a SanDisk class 4.

Hmm, any reason you recommend a class 4 card? I was going to purchase a 64 GB microSDXC class 10 card from Amazon; I don't want to get it if there's some sort of problem though. Please advise; thank you

Yes, there is a reason. Some have reported i/o errors with class 10. But some work ok. But I don't think you can get 64GB in class 4, so you may want to try it. But be warned the 64GB will be mounted as ext_sdcard so is not very useful. All of your apps will use internal storage by default unless you use my swap from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature.

You're right, I should have thought to do a quick search for error class 10 and I would have seen a slew of reports. I don't want to risk it so I went ahead and ordered a 32 GB class 4 microSDHC. Thank you again for your advice!

I've been using a Kingston 64GB class10 for almost a year without any issue.
It got it for my original TF101 then moved to the Nook HD+ (formatted it to FAT32 from the start).
I use it mainly for movies, ROMs, TWRP backups.
I actually have many class10, class6 cards from many vendors (many Kingston)... never a problem.

I also use Sandisk 64GB without any problem. I have pics and mp3s in my sd card. No apps.

[Q] Micro SD/SDHC card compatibility for the B&N Nook

Hi everyone:
I have been running 6.8 from my Sandisk 2GB unrated card. Although unrated, the card runs relatively fast with the Nook as measured to my Samsung Captivate or Apple iTouch (2nd Gen).
First Card: I backed up the image from my 2GB to a 8GB A-Data Class 6 card. Now this is where the problem starts. The Nookie boots up but down is acting slow and sluggish. To the point it is unuseable with lot's of FCs. I tried buring a brand new image and it is the same. I also tried the card as a data drive max'ing it out to 8GB and also using it to record video in my digicam, no problems.
Second Card: I then bought a Patriot 8GB class 10 card and copied the image onto it. Even worse. It won't even boot or get stuck in the boot process on the "Customted Froyo" screen. Try other images, and the same things occur. The card also works fine as a data card.
Third Card: Third time's the charm. I got this card from Costco. 8GB, class 4. Copied the image from the 2GB to the Sandisk 8GB, expanded the partition like the others. Worked like a charm and runs even smoother.
My question here is:
1) Is the Nook picky about micro SD cards? Seems like the faster cards are having compatibility issues.
2) For people complaining about performance issues running off of the micro SD card. Could it be caused by compatibilty issues I've experienced?
FYI, I've been running "Customized Nookie Froyo" from my micro SD card for about two weeks now with no problems. This will be my daily driver. I get the best of both worlds, Froyo and the B&N image.
Something to think about
Evidently the NC is picky about cards IF you are going to run from them - which is somewhat more intensive than is intended for an ereader additional storage device.
There are existing threads on the subject, just search TITLES for "card" in this Forum only.
Summary - The Transcend 8gb Class 6 seems to be the favorite. Some Class 10 cards don't work correctly in Nook. A-Data makes great Desktop RAM and crap SD cards. Sandisk is a safe choice when on sale, their Class rating is conservative.
Patriot 8GB class 10
I have the same card and works great. Strange. I don't know why you are having so much problem.
Did you try a new IMg? .3?

I tried .3, 6.8, 6.7, and HC all with boot or performance problems. I have two Sandisk8gb cards now and able to run all images with no problem. Typing in HC right now.

Bad batch? I tried hc .1 .2 .3 no problem. I guess I am lucky.
I have class 4,6, & 10 cards in 8Gb, 16Gb, and even 32 Gb. Mix and match of brands from SanDisk, A-data, Wintec..etc. Only issue I've run into is using any of my 32Gb cards, they just plain do not work right. Whether I use them for just storage or even a ROM running from them they are nothing but trouble. One thing I have noticed tho is DO NOT format the card using Windows before burning an image. You are better off using a3rd party app to format the card, it seems to work much better. Or format them with Linux if you have access to it.
BTW as for the 32Gb cards they don't work well with much of anything. And from reports I've seen on the web it seems to be a known issue where all the mfgs say they can use 32Gb cards but they do not have the software bugs worked out seeing as most people don't own or use them seeing as they are a bit pricey still. At least for a decent one they are
Hey quick question will2live what is the class rating and size on the Wintec card you're using?
I have a kingmax class 10 16 gb card....HC and nookie froyo refuse to boot......well nookie does, but in the next boot, hangs up...
only cm7 runs perfect

Recommend a SD card size

What size sd card should I get? Would 2gb be fine?
If you're gonna be installing a lot of software you should probably go with 4+. I believe 2 is sufficient if you have it on hand
Thanks

Yes I just got a sandisk 16GB Extreme Class 10 45MBPS for 17.00 prime free shipping
Also RPi has a micro SD card adapter, so I am using my old micro SD card from old phone. They are available at adafruit.com or ModMyPi.com. they are cheaper at adafruit.com
Sent from my GT-I9300
The minimum size SD card I would recommend is 8 GB, also check out this list of SD cards that are known to work well with the RPi and this list of SD cards to avoid and that are known to cause problems and not work.
I think 16Gb 10class SD card is best of speed*size/price.
I looking on sandisk extreme 8GB. But I've read that rpi with some kernels have boot problems with some really fast cards.

I you are pretending to really use the rPi as a "real computer" everyday, install softwares, development kits, etc I would recommend a 8GB or more SD card, they are not expensive(as a guy said, a 32GB card will cost less than 30 bucks in USA. This is difficult here in Brazil, today I bought a 8GB MicroSD card for 30 dollars). If you want to use the rPi for small things, Chrome OS or something like that I think that a 4GB card will be fine.
I Picked myself up a couple of these at the start of this year, Class 10's and on the known Good List and only 20GBP at the moment, which is a bargain. Now all I need a RaspPi to go with it

You can be happy getting the 512MB version then, so waiting isn't that bad.
OT: 4GB ist enough for almost everything, but then its recommended to mount /home onto an external drive for storing user data.

What 64GB card are you using?

What make and model 64GB card are you using?
I just bought a 64GB SanDisk Class 10 that comes formatted exFAT (curse Microsoft with their damned proprietary filesystem and convincing gullible vendors to license it. I'm looking at you Sharp). I stuck it in the Atrix HD and formatted it when prompted at first boot with it in. It was mounted for a bit, but I couldn't write to it and whenever I launched Settings and selected Storage Settings would crash. I just re-partitioned and reformatted it FAT32 in my laptop using a combination of diskpart and Acronis DiskDirector 11 Home. At the moment I am waiting for my files from my old Lexar to be copied to it before I stick it in the Atrix HD again. Will suck if the HD has problems with this card. Can't complain about the brand as SanDisk is one of the inventors of SD cards, including MicroSD.
I'll report back what my experience is.
I thought the Atrix HD was only compatible with SDHC cards (thus 32 GB maximum capacity).
The cards that are 64 GB (and higher) are SDXC, and not compatible.
I got this one when it was on sell a week ago for $43.50 shipped.

Yeah, it isn't just the reviews; Motorola's specs state "Up to 32 GB microSD," but as was pointed out before what they really mean is MicroSDHC cards. However, as these are all extensions of the SD format one would hope that SDXC cards would work. I've seen a few other reports of people using 64GB cards with the HD w/o problems. I'm just curious as to what has been the experience of the people here as they are generally a good deal more tech savvy than on the other forums.
So far the only hiccup I've had is that it wouldn't format the card. Also twice I've tried to unmount and then remount the card, after which the phone thought the card had mounted, but it wouldn't use it. A reboot fixed this each time.

I formatted my card in my phone, put it in my pc and copied 33GB of mp3s, then copied the stuff from off of my old card 23GB, then some tv shows. I watched the tv shows from my phone, deleted mp3s and recorded a movie. I have yet to unmount and remount.
have you tried searching for this? I remember there being a topic about people using 64GB SD cards already in this forum

[Q] 128GB SD Card + MicroSD Card Adapter = 128GB Nook?

Hi,
I was thinking of buying a 128GB SD card and this SD to MicroSD adapter http://dx.com/p/sd-to-microsd-transflash-card-converter-module-27001 and hooking it up to my Nook HD 7" for use with all those awesome emulators and the recent CM builds. Question is, will this work? Does the Nook even support SD cards that big? I don't want to buy something and find out it doesn't work the way I wanted.
Hi,
I have read both on XDA and on the official Barnes and Noble support site that people successfully tested and used 64gb micro SDXC cards. But for 128gb I am afraid none tried or reported yet.
If you do try it let us know it if works.

My Nook HD (8gig) can't seem to recognise my Samsung 32gig but can for my SanDisk 8gig. Is there some limit for the 8gig model? Should I just try buying a 32gig Sandisk one?

You should be able to see up to 64GB. Is the 32GB one you tried formatted properly. Try formatting it in the nook under settings, storage.

Yea, why would you want that hanging off the bottom of your Nook? And why do you need 128GB of storage for a Nook?
You could tape it to the back and out of the way.

i have one of these, it doesnt work in the galaxy note, but it does work with my S3, there is also a post on you tube , its a rubbish review but you can see it working http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaQIkAHbHoE this should be great with the galaxy mega 6.3, and yes I'd just tape it to the back i dont care if it looks ugly, its only me that will really see it. Im confident it will also take the 256SD card but havent tried,
i also have the little adapter which is in the you tube video which works brilliant on my s3 and it sadly doesnt work on the note, it might work on the note 2 but havent tried it yet...

Best sd card, will speed make a big difference??

Hi All,
I am most probably going to buy a nook 9 hd+ today, and am looking at what sd card to put in it.
I will load cm10 onto the memory card, so as the whole system is running off the sd card, im guessing
it will pay off to get a good quality sd card??
Im thinking a class 10 samsung or sandisk, probably a 32gb one.
Any suggestions/comments?

If you search in the HD/HD+ forums there are whole threads on this subject. Class 10 are not the best. SanDisk class 4 are the best. Getting the right card is critical when running from SD.
