Will the Gear get ROMs? Use with other phones? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

I know it's VERY early, but that 30% discount at Tmobile is tempting me. But I don't plan on getting a Note 3 or a S4. Currently I'm very happy with my LG G2, although I am considering swapping out to a Nexus 5 depending on what that ends up being.
Anyway I'm trying to find a use for the Gear without a S4/N3. Is there ANY functionality that would prove useful just running it by itself?
Do you guys anticipate any ROMs released in the future to have it work with other Android phones, or just to add stand alone functionality to it? Or is it a totally closed system and hopeless?

Right now it's an n3 or nothing. Have not heard of any roms really

Right now without a compatible device to pair it to you can't even use it as a watch, as the pairing process is what sets the time etc, and there is no way to bypass the screen instructing you to pair it with your device. After it's paired it will function as a watch, camera and pedometer without being connected to the phone but that's about it. No idea on roms but I have heard Samsung will be releasing an SDK for developers to create apps for it.

The app was updated so it can be installed on an S4 from the Samsung store yesterday I believe. Pretty sure it doesn't support all the functions on the S4 tho until it gets 4.3.

Could always get a gear and go into a carrier store and sync on of the GN 3 on display... Jk... Then again it may work. Lol

Galaxy Gear 2

Say what? Already?
Built in Gps & 4Gb....why must they do this to early adopters (and so soon). I can't complain, mine was free with my Note 3, but I still feel a bit...meh.
"The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will reportedly launch as an all-Android device which means you won't have to own either the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy S3.
According to Pocket-Lint, Samsung's next-generation Smart Watch will come sporting in-built GPS along with 4GB of onboard memory, it'll also come with running and music apps straight out of the box, something which the original Galaxy Gear was criticised for not having.
It's not clear whether Samsung will keep the same design as the original Galaxy Gear or whether the company will decide to make some changes there as well in light of the fact that it would work with any Android smartphone.
Whilst it may seem as though this is a very short turnaround for a company to be releasing an update it's actually something Samsung has plenty of practise at with the Galaxy range being constantly updated throughout the year."

we don't need that. galaxy gear is perfectly capable of running internet browser and navigation apps, it just need custom rom for that.
they need to update the software and get rid of touchwiz, it will never be usefull.
Galaxy range being constantly updated throughout the year.
say what? they barely make updates, and when they do they do not work properly leaving the user with broken software for MONTHS.
CES 2014 does not mean they will start selling it it the middle of January either.
I like two things,
A display that does not need to time out in 5 seconds
Double the battery life (even though the gear has great battery life now)
They better make the first gear, compatible with all phones so at least we can get some resale value.

Nah, Samsung is going to build the first Nexus watch that will be introduced at CES 2014 Or... whatever
Wow, only ordered one last night. Now question is, do I cancel and wait six months? Now I have typed it out in front of me I say hell no...
Why?
With the work that FOmey and others are doing, why go for 2.0. I have a browser, Nova Launcher, etc. Does far more than my Pebble and getting much more every day. This is what I bought mine for. Other than a few minor thing, it is doing more than I thought it could less than 6 weeks after release. I'm sure we will get TWRP or CWM soon, so we'll have all we need. The hardware is already great, so I'm enjoying it. I'll be buying 2.0 down the road, being a hardware junkie, but this has been so much fun already.

Yea I think they were referring to hardware updates rather than software ones. I agree though, bar lack of rich notifications over most apps, I love mine too
We all know were going to buy it as soon as it hits the shelves.. or atleast I am
I look forward to it ! Would be nice if they offered trade in's if its such a short period of time after the initial release date.
Yeah.. will buy the next gear if it hit the store.. But I will still keep my gear tho..

Who am I kidding if it came out next week, I likely would buy it
i'm tired of being an early adopter and then left for loong time with barely to no support at all.
they will have to make more improvements if they want my money again.
Early adopter with no support? Really? With the frequent updates samsung provides...i think they are doing a stand up job.
The gear is in constant development and improvment. That's why we all buy samsung. What other company provides as many updates across their Android portfolio as they do?

+1 - Also if the phone is not getting the updates thats due to the cel company's not pushing them out, Because Samsung is.
Also if it was to come out soon I would keep my current Gear. and get the new one. But what if it does not have all that I want and have to wait for cool roms again to make it mine. (OK, OK, I could just do it the old fashioned way) But this is why I love being Married, Her wife have my Gear, Dang now I need one, Time to get the Gear 2. LOL Did that with the Note 2 to the Note 3, gave her my note 2 and got me then note 3. I love my understanding wife.)
From what I read, the first great was to test the market. I was about to buy one but now I will wait a few months. It's hard to keep up with innovation and technology and Samsung is at the forefront. Very similar to what the did What the s3 to the s4.. I believe it was 9 months between them.

Seriously, how can the Gear keep getting bad reviews?

I've got a lot of wearables (Pebble, Gear, Fitbit, Glass, etc.) and the Gear beats them all by a wide margin based on functionality, ease of use and looks.
I'm still baffled that nearly every review and comment I see still bashes it.
Especially with the latest updates it has become a great device.
I don't understand that either. I mean my only complaint is that I haven't been pushed the new update but I plan to manually do so anyways and the battery life isn't the greatest. But honestly what do you expect from a watch that does so much? I'm happy I don't see what everyone else's problem is. Maybe they expected to strap it on and start curing cancer or something... Its a watch people.

You hit the nail on the head. I have the Quallcom Toq in addition to the Galaxy Gear, and the only better feature with the Toq is their interferometric modulator*display technology (Mirasol display). With this technology, 3 to 5 days battery life can be obtained with heavy usage if the backlight is not used, but the display itself is always on and readable, and actually becomes more readable in direct sunlight. With the display always lit, it appears less nerdy than a blank faced (no display) smartwatch. Bottom line is, I'd rather have one full days battery life out of a useful smartwatch, than 3 to 5 days of battery life from a smartwatch that is only marginally useful and is clunky in its operation. With note 3 tucked in pocket, on a ladder installing an in ceiling speaker, I can answer a call on the Galaxy Gear from my wife, so she can tell me she crashed into my car that was parked in our garage. True story.
Could it be better, sure.... But for a company that took a chance to beat Apple to the mass production line, it is pretty impressive.
My 2 cents worth.
Completely agree with you. I bought a metawatch when it first came out as a developer watch. It was awesome at the time, but the gear blows it out of the water. I mean, battery life isn't bad. I think people read the 25 hours and think it's true. When I first got my gear, I couldn't put it down and still got 2 full days. Now I'm getting close to 4 days. With the notification update, this thing just got way cooler and more useful. It just keeps getting better and better every day. I can't help but to think that people that give it bad reviews either have not really owned one or have not used it to it's potential.

I watched a ton of reviews on YouTube, and while they were all basically saying cool device but lots of problems, there was one similarity. They were ALL done within the first week or two of release. Before a lot of the issues were addressed (namely the notification issue). Even reviews released late November were actually using pre-updated information.
Under my daily usage (heavy notifications, reminders, calls and pictures), I get easily 1.5 days. And since I charge my phone every night anyways, it's no biggie to charge my watch as well. I used to take my regular watch off every night as well, now the only difference is an additional charging cord.
I'm happy with battery life, amazed at how much they crammed into a watch (seriously, this is a WATCH, and look at its capabilities, not even with rooting and such), and am not even mad about the price (my wife bought me a watch a few years ago for about half the cost, and all it has going for it is a few small diamonds inlaid in it. All IT can do is tell me the time)
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using xda app-developers app
I've checked out all other reviews on other watches, And my gear do way more than those other watches
Would be nice if it worked with other Android devices though, Like my Nexus 5.
Sometimes the Note is a little large for where I'm going so the N5 is ideal & the Gear would complement it brilliantly.
Hey guys i got a couple of question, I have the pebble watch so when the notification comes on the watch and you view it does it clear it from the phone? also with the pebble watch the talkback system on the phone turns on so that means when i use the stock browser the voice says like "page loading or page loaded" im guessing the gear doesnt do that right?
The device was bound to get bad reviews because of the limited functionality, and limited usability before it was available to the current crop of smartphones.
And even then, you have the issues that Google Wallet faced when it was first released... if it only works with a couple of phones to do a few things, people are going to be quick to dismiss it as a "gimmick"
And it doesn't help when it's not a cheap gimmick as well. Unless you're a serious tinkerer -- like most of the people reading this thread -- you have to be seriously committed to not just Android but to the Samsung ecosystem as a whole in order to actually enjoy spending $300 on this smartwatch.
If Samsung releases a complete solution that would allow the Gear to work with ANY Android phone that supports Bluetooth LE, and work flawlessly without any tinkering, then you'll see a turnaround in the reviews -- much like you saw with the Gear Manager update that allowed additional notifications.
Their application development for the Gear is invite-only, so even if you had access to an SDK you couldn't publish any apps for use with the watch -- again, unless it was restricted to people "like us" that don't mind going out of their way to push an apk and sideload it to their watch, at the risk of turning it into a brick.
It's going to take some doing, and I don't know if Samsung will actually do what is necessary for this particular generation of the Gear to become a mainstream device. I'm glad I got one, but in retrospect it's really a lot of hard work to fully extract its potential. Until Samsung addresses this, I doubt you'll see many stellar reviews.

The Tmobile Note 5 and S6 Edge+ both already have Video Calling.
We just got a BOH4 firmware update a couple days ago which included native video calling.
Have a great evening!
Seriously? We haven't even got the 5.1.1 update still. Keep dreaming if you think Samsung gives a crap about us Note 4 users now that they have the iPhone-esque Note 5 and are wanting all iPhone users to switch to the Note 5.
Whats worse, my girlfriends S6 Edge just updated for video calling and ALL of her icons are now "iPhone-esque" as well, with no way to change them back from what I can see. I am seriously over Samsung with their actions this year. I bought the Note 4 because I DIDN'T want an iPhone! Stop trying to copy them. Seriously. Just STOP!
And before you ask, yes, imad.

Nova Prime. Make your launcher look the way you want it.
I know about all the launchers but it's the fact that Samsung has completely lost focus of the market they have and are now only caring about the iPhone and the people that use them and it sucks when you finally find a great phone and company and they completely do a 180 and start doing all the things you hated about the competition in the first place.

She can change those icons to whatever she wants through the theme store! There's pretty much anything you can think of in there and plenty of them are free!
Aha yes my first thought as well...however this seems to be a system wide change that even changing themes will not change back. All of the icons are now "bubbled" like the iPhone. Unfortunately changing themes does not change them back :/

I'd rather use Hangouts.
hangouts is crap... google infested crap
everyone has to remember, once Samsung comes out with a new phone, they forget about the previous model, for ex. Note 5 just came out, Note 4 will probably get 1 or 2 updates then its forgotten about....
they been doing that for years, just like HTC, I had just about all the HTC models starting from there first HTC T-Mobile Dash (windows phone) all the way upto the M7... and then I stopped supporting HTC, and this will be my last Samsung phone, I had the S2, S3, NOTE 2, NOTE 3, NOTE 4, and I refused to buy the Note 5....
I bought my 2nd Note 4 less than a month ago, I have my wife my Note 4 and purchased this and Moving on passed SAMSUNG,
If I have to, I will just buy freaking flip phones if I have to, all these smartphone companies come out with a new phone and forget about updating there older models...
I REALLY HATE APPLE STUFF, but one thing I do notice is that they update there devices for the older models with there updates, which is a shame that android phones don't except one.... GOOGLE PHONES.... like NEXUS devices get the updates... well will see what happens....
just frustrated with these companies selling there phones expensive and not support them after you purchase them... they make sooooo muchhhhh money for a device that is really worth less than $200 to make.... we all fall into this hype and make all the executives way to rich....
one way is to just stop buy them....
For myself video calling has never been a must have and when needed I use Skype. At the end I rather have my sd slot than native video calling. Besides its just a matter of time before one of our talented developers add it or more to their roms. Themes and Icons will always be one more reason why Android is better than IOS, in my honest opinion of course.
Well just in case anyone noticed or not, we got video calling on the Note 4 and it works. After 5.1.1 update.

S5 vs. S7. Which one should I get?

I am switching from Verizon to AT&T so I need to get a new phone. Since AT&T doesn't offer Motorola smartphones, I have narrowed my choices down to the S7 and S5 (or maybe the S5 active). I have looked at the specs for both and they seem pretty close. I am not a heavy phone user, mostly just Facebook, email, Pandora, and a few games here and there. Also need a decent camera. Trying to decide if the S7 is worth the extra money over the S5. What is everyone's thoughts? Thank you.
P.S. I am not looking at the S6 due to lack of a SD card slot.
Well the S5 is 2 years old, going on 3. When I updated my wife's phone, they didn't offer the S5. I love my S5 Active, however, there will be more support for the S7, while the S5 is nearing its end of life. Also, I heard a S7 Active was right around the corner.

My first smartphone was Samsung Galaxy S (captivate), then got S3, and now I am on S5. This probably will be my last Samsung phone combined with AT&T service.
If you have an individual plan, instead of moving to AT&T with S5 or S7, I would recommend just going to Project Fi with Nexus. When I did the math, I realized that I would actually end up saving even though my current monthly AT&T plan includes a 22% corporate discount. At the end of the day at a lower price point you will get refund on unused data, free tethering, more frequent software updates, free international service (with limits), and overall the service tends to use much less data since it better auto connects to free wifi hotspots that Google knows about. You can go with the Nexus 6P or go with the $200 Nexus 5 and do an upgrade when Nexus 7 or whatever comes out since you can pay off the phone sooner with the savings benefits.

I too love my active, however, no root means lack of roms. So marshmallow will most likely be the last update we get, unless att decides to unlock our bootloader. A better option would be to get an international s5 or s7 to unlock. I do believe they even have the active as an international model.

The s5 and s5 active have identical specs. The only difference is the active is a little more rugged. As for rooting, it's the same thing as jailbreaking an iPhone. It gives you administrative access to all parts of your phone, not just limited access. It's mainly for power users.

I'm a huge Samsung fan. All of my consumer products have become Samsung as all of my hosting / webTech is HP.
As I do wish they would quit dropping the ball and put out that 1 "here's for you world" dev phone with it all, i dont honeatly foresee it. (S5 lacks sufficient ram, S6 not even gonna start, S7 locked bootloader, seemingly salvation S7 international dropped NFC).
Now onto the discussion, of all of the options available, i see no question. Forward moving with forward support points to the S7 Edge. Personally, im grabbing the international exynos version as my NFC only gets used to tinker with tags here and there. I have to play with and mod everything. Example: today i bought a 5 Bay Sata NAS enclosure. First things first, all screws out. Nice heatsink, hmm, no chipset fan.....this simply will not do. 45 minutes later and she's purring cool awaiting my infinite search requests for classic endless terms like root, rom, hashcode and it's favorite ".zip".
I'm curious if my S7 will overtake my collection of warranty voided and in some cases paperweightes S5's. All in all, if you're a remotely busy person on your phone, the S7 ram is more than worth it. But......if you watch a lot of TV, go S5 - Samsung felt the IR blaster was too passe for a flagship device.

I agree. I dont need the wallet as in my small town in rural Tennessee, there are only 3 retailers that take it. everything else is swipe and go. I am about due for an upgrade. 2 years on my s5 and it is well.. old. been a great device. I personally will be very hesitant to grab the S7. Since work pays for it, I may look at a non samsung device. maybe even HTC or a Nexus. Root to me is essential because of the ability to truly customize and debloat.

In rural Oklahoma it's the same. In the city I work 30 minutes away takes more NFC. Even then I still find myself using my card. Man you're lucky with work paying for the phone. My job gets me 22% of my AT&T bill.

I think on S7, the Samsung Pay feature is different than the NFC wallet and works with any point of sale credit card reader even in small towns. From my understanding S7 has some specialty hardware that mimics electromagnetic signature of credit card's magnetic strip when held next to ordinary traditional credit card swipe readers. http://www.samsung.com/us/samsung-pay The specialty hardware was as result of acqusition of LoopPay by Samsung. http://blogs.wsj.com/personal-techn...samsungs-looppay-mobile-payment-system-works/

Anybody use Active Watch 2 LTE with 4XL?

Just wondering if anyone has an active watch 2 lte paired with their 4XL. If so, what functionality do you lose for the watch? I currently have a Note 10+ but after a couple of years of running Samsung devices I am itching to get back on a Pixel device (most likely 4XL). I miss rooting and ROMs lol.

I have the active watch 2, just not the lte model. I don't believe I've lost any functionality of the watch. I did have a rough time getting it to pair which required manually downloading the apks since I couldn't install from the play store but I'm pretty sure they fixed that.
Works fine for me. I haven't really noticed much difference between the S10 and pixel with it.

Works fine here, don't seem to be missing any features.

I got the active 2 was meant to be getting the ultra with it, which I cancelled as they didn't send it
They did send the watch out immediately but the ultra was and still is delayed
I could not activate LTE as my current phone was Huawei so I had to use it over Bluetooth which defeated the object of getting the watch
It's also not android wear so you cannot install apps like WhatsApp and can only respond instead of send from certain apps.
Text and calls work, battery was brilliant but LTE just wouldn't happen until I got the Samsung or A Samsung to pair it with.
Not sure if the pixel will pair via LTE if it's never been seen previously or paired with a Samsung device or compatible device with your matched SIM card inside it.
I would ask in a service provider shop to be 100%
