I know that the phone first searches for CMDA networks, so it takes a while to get to the GSM networks.
I'd like to change the settings to GSM default. I read it can be done in build.prop by changing ro.telephony.default_network=2.
This is supposed to be 2G/3G
What else can I do in order to make this like a GSM phone?

Yes I know that. The phone is set as default CMDA. I think there are some build.prop and some settings in system/costumise/aac/default.xml
Check the lines in default.xml

I always toggle between data network mode on and off thinking that I'm switching between 2G and 3G when I don't need to use data. However that doesn't seem to be the case as I checked my signal today and with data network mode set to off, it says UMTS. Is there a way to change this?

I should mention that I know you can change between 2G and 3G in Settings > Wireless and Network, but it seems that the option is removed...
OP got updated. Would be great if someone can answer this.
I've noticed I need to toggle airplane mode to have it actually change 2g to 3g or vise versa. It is very annoying so I don't bother anymore.

i9000 ROMs (like mine) have this option under Wireless And Networks.

@Mikey. Yea I noticed that option was missing in some ROMs, which was sad to see as it can play a huge role in saving battery life.
And I meant if there was a way to get the phone to automatically switch to GSM mode when data network mode is turned off. Should've clarified that in the OP.
Thanks for answering that though
Hello,
may be it's not on the right section.
I've a problem with my operator ATM, it 's hard to have a good quality in voise on 3G.
In my previous phone, i could force network on 2G, but on Z1 i can only force 3G on network choice.
Is there a program to only use 2G until the operator repair his network?
Thanks in advance.

Strange!!!!
Can someone with a Verizon Nexus 6 take a screenshot of the LTE Bands in the *#*#data#*#* menu? I've been using a Sprint Nexus 6 on Verizon with no issues, but I'm curious why it doesn't show me the correct LTE bands in the menu. Using LTE Discovery, I know I'm on the right bands. I just don't know why they're not in the menu. Also, if anyone knows the EDIT password for the menu, it would be appreciated as I'd like to know what's the options are in there.
I searched and couldn't find a PW that works anywhere.
Here's what mine looks like.

I have a Moto NX6 that is on VZW, my screen shows exactly the same as yours. I am running LMY47D with the Radio from 47E.
@djsiva
It's like that for everyone (there would be no different)
And password would be "000000" (6 time 0)
Thanks Danny for confirming the status. The 000000 has already been tried and it didn't work. I think because it was a sprint phone and needs the MSL for the password.
Mine shows those bands as on..... Telus phone, 47e..... 000000 pass code did work....
The 000000 pw works on my verizon nexus, all bands indicate off, what benifit/detriment would there be to turning then on

Yes with others phones I have VoLTE
There is some works for this but anyway, still not possible for pixel4 right now. The work able to force enable the menu in settings but not provisioned it so it is still not working. I think especially in the country that Google does not officially sale, like me in Thailand.
Even i would like to know. I remember there was a way to do it in pixel 2.
I'm using an unlocked model and the "5G" (not UW) on Verizon is much slower than the 4G in my area. Is there any way to disable it?
It's 20mbps vs 100+mbps
Just go into network and change from 5G/4G/3G/2G to 4G/3G/2G

Mine doesn't have those options.
A lot of issues with 5G and it's implementation both networks and on phones.
Rarely does it justify its existence except in limited areas. It's also a known battery hog even if not in use. Blame Qualcomm's bum rushing for that.
Avoid any 2 chipset solutions for 5G like the plague.
At first I had minor regrets of not having it on my 10+... now I'm damn glad I don't!
Try this
From play store download the app "Phone by Google"
Open the app and dial *#*#4636#*#* it's gonna open a secret menu,go to set preferred network type and change to LTE/CDMA/GSM/WCDMA
