Just wanted to ask others about their experiences on using custom kernels vs the stock kernels that come with custom ROMs.
I've tried the custom kernels and it seems that they either sacrifice performance (screen on delays, random lag) or battery life (usually because of overclocking the GPU) over the ROM's stock kernel. I'm curious to know if others have experienced the same thing or if it's something wrong with my settings. I always flash the custom kernel right after installing a custom ROM so that everything's clean.
Thanks!
I use ARHD 21.0 and it performs better than att stock for me with better battery life.

Sounds like a classic trade-off. You don't get anything for free.

Hi. I just wonder about this.
Many times, when a new firmware comes out, after 2-3 days there are custom roms based on it, with tweaks (edited build.prop for example) and other speed mods.
Do they really improve speed? I mean seriously, if someone tests the 3-4 most known stable custom roms, based on same android version, and with the same kernel, also with the same apps on it, will be any noticeable difference in speed?
I see other devs releasing a rom after 3 days, and I can't explain what kind of tweaks could give more speed being stable at the same time.
Maybe custom roms are just modded/themed stock roms, and when there's a speed differenve it's because of the kernel inside.
Just being curious about that (also could make the choice of the rom itself easier...)
Any opinion? From your experience at least.

A mixture of both .

definately a mixture of both. They both make huge improvments over stock. in my opinion anyway
probaby karnel or speed
some costum rome improve your phone speed or karnel speed. especially visuality.

I don't need to improve my phone's karnel speed, it gets enough girls as it is.
However in my experience speed improvement and the smoothness that comes with it are mainly the process of the kernel as that controls the interaction between android and the hardware, where most performance bottlenecks happen. The ROM itself adds functionality, appearence and most important of all...stability.
At least so it appears to me.

I partially agree. I mean, if we assume stock roms are stable, custom roms can;t be more stable.
So, they provide some speed, maybe because there are not so many system apps inside, and mostly they provide some nice mods (visual and functional).
hi everybody. i've tried both kernel named in the title but, being a noob, i can't decide which one is better. can you expalin me which is more convenient to use and why it is? thanks alot
it depend on ur need, for me abyssnote.
i prefer also abbys kernel but the best solution would be to test kernels by yourself ;D
After trying both, Franco kernel, for me, is the best, no lag, smooth, good performance and great battery life.
the new franco kernel 6 in my opinion runs very smoothly. I slept through the night (7hrs) and my phone's battery didn't lose even 1% (I use Juice Defender to put my phone in flight+silent mode during the night).
I found both of the kernels very well, however I am testing out Abyss 4.0 as it has the ability for overclocking and undervolting which the Franco-kernel not yet supports. Prior I ran Franco v. 2, 4 and 6 which all were good with a better battery life than my previous Abyss-kernels (probably due to lower frequency used).
Franco is the way to go for me. It's stable, fast, and very easy on your battery. No overclocking or undervolting, though. If you are into these, chose Abyss.
Both of them are good kernel.
Been changing those kernels back and forth between new releases.
So far, I'm on Abyss.
Depends on your needs. OC go for Abyss, No OC go for Franco. Both of them have great battery life.
just tried abyssnote v4.0 final with TW recovery by koush, awesome recovery, thanks Angelom.
How do I enter recovery mode on the SGH-I717 Note? I dont have a home button I can press but instead the touch. I cant get it to reboot in recovery mode.
Try volume up and down buttons (same time) and the power..
Franco #2 is a clear winner for me in CF and Franco #2 in terms of battery life...
+1 franco v6 kernel coming from speedmod.
+1 Franco v6 with RocketRom v22. Loving it so far

I also prefer Abyss if you need/want OC
I tried all note.kernels and none of the.kernel up par with Franco. Not evem close

Franco 7 with Darkyrom 3.3. Amazing on battery life for me.
Franco's kernel no question. He is known for is fast, great battery life kernels check the nexus s and galaxy nexus. His kernels are awesome.
So what is your average battery life with the Franco kernel? I have the Abyss 4.1 right now, and it loses around 2-3% overnight and definitely can last around 1 and a half day with minimal usage.
Neither... I'm using FM kernel right now and I can surely vouch the longetivity of my Note's battery life...
2 days already with 40% battery level... 1 hr of internet, 30 mins of calls everyday.. 100 texts, emails and news feeds...
Tried Franco's kernel.. I was not satisfied with the expectant rate of my battery level dropping 3% in just a span of an hour.. I also tried AbyssNote, made a comparison with Franco's kernel, and though there is slight difference in terms of battery life, but the many issues I read on AbyssNote forum of BLN and stuffs made me wary of keeping it on my Note...
So I tried back FM kernel and made a decision not to charge it everyday (I used to charged my Note whenever and wherever I can).
Now, I am never going back to flashing another kernel again (with Franco's or with Angelom's Abyss), unless some of the issues mentioned on some users (on their respective threads) can fully be smoothen out..
Just my take.....
Hello,
So im willing to try some kernels for my Nexus to see whats the best for my needs.
I want to compare the stock kernel to the leankernel, franco kernel and the ElementalX kernel.
Comperasion criterias:
1. Faster booting
2. Fastest performence as possible without hurting battery life in comparison to the stock kernel.
3. Better battery life as possible without hurting performence in comparison to the stock kernel.
So how can i compare those kernels? should i just flash each kernel and use AnTuTu Benchmark and Better Battery Stats on each one of them?
Choosing the best kernel for me is to give a try for each one and see for myslef - i know that. But i want to see the stats in front of me to reasure im picking the best one and also beacuse iv'e used the chroma and euphoria roms which use leankernel and franco kernel but im not sure the difference is noticeable by eye.
Also, feel free to share your current kernel and opinion about it

1. Stop watch
2 & 3: Not really possible. To give to performance, takes from battery and vice versa. You give 1 to performance, you take 1 from battery. There are no magic settings that allow you to give 1 to performance and only take 0.5 from battery.
I hope the attached image helps to explain that
There are also other things to factor like the governor, scheduling, hot plug support , etc.
For example elementalX has its own Governor and I'm not sure it will even default itself to be used. You will need some type of kernel configuration tool to enable it .
There is also how YOU are using your phone. Just too many variables to consider

Yeah for sure.
I always say that because kernel x performs more than kernel y out-of-the-box, it doesn't mean you can't set kernel y up to perform like x... It's just a trade off whichever way you go.
My personal advice is find a kernel that has the features you want, then configure the governor with the bias you want to see. I always go for Elementalx. @flar2 sets the best balance of battery and performance in my opinion, though I always alter my settings to suit my needs anyway
Over the time, my stock HTC One has become laggy and bettery life has been pretty bad. (I am on stock 5.0.2)
I, now, am looking to root my One and want a stable, butter smooth and battery efficient Sense 7 ROM. I came across many Sense 7 ROMs in development section - InsertCoin, ViperOne, SDv6, Artmod and others. Can someone suggest which one is the best in terms of the parameters I am looking for?
Thanks
I can only recommend Insertcoin, as I haven't tried the others.
If you combine this with the elementalX kernel you can achieve a pretty nice battery life.
Install X-posed and greenify for an even better battery
From all the roms I have flashed, I have found Sense 7 roms offer the worst for battery life. Kitkat Sense 6 roms seem to be the best for performance and battery life, but then that's just my experience. Each to their own.
Best Battery Live ever
try
1) [ROM] Android Revolution HD 92.0 with
2) Elementrix Kernel
3) Greenefy and
4) Xposed and the MobleActiveRadioFix (to fix Lollipop Bug)
5) (optional) if you like, change launcher to launcher ex - sense is very battery intensiv

what rom do you use ?
( this post is not only for me, it's for all the people who are looking for a good custom kernel but are indecided on it).
I know there are a lot of custom kernel for Op3T... I want to know which are the best kernel for battery and stability. So please can everyone that are using a custom kernel leave a feedback on what custom kernel are using and what is the time on screen with it? (Maybe also the rom in use)
Thanks everyone
Blu_spark all the way and his TWRP.

There is no such thing. Battery life and stability vary drastically from one user to another depending on settings, apps, how you use your phone, local cell reception, etc.. Lots of variables determine battery and stability, and kernel is just one small part of that. You're expecting folks to just give you a "silver bullet" response, one kernel that will solve all your problems. It simply doesn't work that way.
Stock kernel of Freedom OS and made own profiles with Kernel Adiutor. Tried many custom kernels, but this looks best combination for ME.
For battery profile just drop about 50% CPUs and GPU max clocks.
