Backup modem / flash new modem - Motorola Atrix HD

First, i'd like to thank our atrix hd wise guys for all the knowledge you've put on this forum .
Now to the issue at hand, i'm currently running CM10.2 nightly 05 oct. I've been having modem crashes for weeks now as described in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385048&page=24
Weird thing is, i only get these crashes when in the area where i work. Back at home i get no modem crashes at all.
My Baseband is MB886_BP_100740.071.65.04P
I'm considering flashing mexico retail modem (which has good user opinions) using the procedure described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233871
I've figured the backup process for the modem should be something like this:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 of=/storage/sdcard1/modem.bin bs=4096
So, now with the questions:
1. Before proceeding, i'd like to know if this would be a correct backup procedure for my current modem files?
2. Would i be able to restore this newly created modem.bin file with fastboot in case mexican modem doesn't work/solve my problem?
3. From what i've researched, the mexican 4.1.2 modem file should be compatible with CM10.2 JB 4.3, am I correct?
Thanks in advance for any help on this!

From my experience with other phones, modems work regardless of android version. If that backup procedure is correct (which I have no clue if it is), you can restore it by reversing the command.
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app

I went ahead and backed up / flashed a new modem, so to answer my own questions.
1. The backup method for the modem partition was correct.
2. I was able to restore the backup i created.
3. A 4.1.2 modem worked fine on 4.3. I believe tho there could be incompatiblity between ICS and JB for example.
Sadly i haven't been able to solve my modem crash issues, i will report if i find anything. Thanks to the previous user for the input above.

Hi
I mistakenly formatted m7y modem via CWM two days back. How can I restore it, seeing that your process was successful?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] CM9 nightly- Network not available!

Upgraded my SGS stock 2.3.3 yesterday to CM9 nightly posted on 07-06-2012. I love the ROM, but the only problem is - i don't have any network signal on my phone. Wifi works. It seems to scan the mobile networks and registers also and creates APN connections automatically. But on selecting any of the networks, it shows the message: "unable to connect to this network at this time. Please try again later." The IMEI number shows up correctly. Using Vodafone India network.
I feel it should be just a minor setting somewhere that is missing...
Does anyone know how to make this work?
...or should i switch back to the stock ROM, and maybe later to CM7? I'm on Linux. Found XXJVU ROM in Heimdall format. Do i need to install clockwork again after installing XXJVU?
Thanks in advance.
Wipe again.Flash again.
hey! make a copy from the zip file of the ROM and replace the file (apns-conf.xml) which is uploaded here as a zip file with the file (apns-conf.xml) in this directory "System/etc". it worked for me and i wish it will work for u bro.
send me if it work with u or not.
Why you don´t install de modem from the your ROM stock 2.3.3 ( via Odin ) ?
I think the new modem ICS is not compatible with the system of their country.
Tell me how you solved your problem.
Sorry, for my poor English.

[PROBLEM] GT-I9305N modem doesn't work after flashing ROM

Ok, so this is the story so far:
I purchased the phone
Rooted the phone
< some weeks/months pass >
Installed BMA6 for I9305 (not N, radio not working) (at this point I had sboot for I9305)
Installed radio for I9305N (radio not working)
Tried CM10.1 (radio not working)
Restored my stock ROM with cleared data partition: XXALIA system with COVALI7 CSC and XXALI8 modem (radio not working)
Restored nandroid of XXALIA... see above (radio working)
Installed I9305NXXBMA2_I9305NNEEBMA2_NEE (sboot for I9305N now) (radio not working)
Restored my stock ROM with cleared data partition: XXALIA system with COVALI7 CSC and XXALI8 modem (didn't try booting)
Restored nandroid of XXALIA... see above (radio working)
Installed XXBLL1 modem on top of nandroid (radio still works)
So it seems that the radio is only working when I am at literally the stock software that shipped with my phone. I have no idea what's going on.
I am open to pretty much any suggestions here, please help me!
UPDATE: Discovered that installing Perseus kernel on Samsung roms fixes the problem. Still need to figure out why...
I'll add that when the modem doesn't work, I cannot get the IMEI number at all.
You must be going wrong somewhere. Do a complete system restore (emergency firmware restore on Kies if you have to) flash CWM or TWP recovery, then just wipe both caches, data, system, install CM or LS, wipe data then boot.
If you go through that whole process exactly like that and your radio still doesn't work then I will be amazed as both CM and LS don't flash your modem

I can try an emergency firmware restore on Kies I guess.
Discovered that the problem only exists when I am not running Perseus kernel... i.e. Perseus kernel fixes it.

Both current AOSP ROMs (Liquid Smooth & Cyanogenmod) currently have kernels based off Perseus so you should be fine running them.

I am not.
Sorry, don't know why it specifically only works on Perseus, but I use quite different sources to the official Samsung ones so there might be something different in the modem APIs which makes it work.
Right, I've had enough of this, sending it to service center tomorrow... stockified of course.
EDIT: Change of plans, system status in bootloader won't reset to stock so I am back to Perseus kernel... guess I'm gonna have to actually figure this out after all...

[RESOLVED] Help restoring /efs folder

Greetings!
I apologize if there has been a similar thread, but I couldn't find anything that worked, so here I go:
I flashed to the official XWJW1 firmware (which I got from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881) successfully, I then proceeded to root it by flashing Semaphore 2.7.4, again successfully. I then booted into CWM recovery and flashed Slim-I9000-4.2.2.build.3-OFFICIAL.zip. The first time, the phone rebooted almost immediately and got stuck at the boot screen, which I assume was because it installed the new Semaphore kernel only, so I removed the battery, went back into recovery mode (this time it was indeed the new version of CWM) and reflashed the ROM successfully. I installed Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.8.zip as well and booted into SlimBean. All is working great apart from the "minor" problem of no mobile network. I went in the settings > mobile networks > network operators and got "Error while searching for networks". I went to check the information under About Phone and saw this:
Baseband version unknown
I read it could be due to messed up /efs folder, so I reflashed the official XWJW1 rom (with working network and correct baseband version), rooted it and copied the /efs folder (using ES File Explorer and Superuser). I installed the SlimBean rom again (still no network and no baseband version info) and tried replacing the /efs folder: first with the AROMA file manager from within the recovery mode, then with ES file manager, then with Android Terminal Emulator - NONE worked. I tried deleting the entire folder and then copying the backed up one, I can't delete it (even though I have superuser permissions). For example ES FM gives "error code 39" when trying to delete the folder and it either deletes all files from inside (apart from Lost+Found folder) or only some of the files. Same with AROMA. I checked that /efs is mounted rw... (I'm not even sure if I should try to alter it while it's mounted and the phone is running, but this was one of the ways I read about while searching. When I enter CWM recovery, it does not appear to be mounted and thus is empty.. so I assume whatever I paste in there will get wiped once it's mounted at boot)
Any idea how to restore the folder from the stock firmware or how to get a working mobile network?
Model number: GT-I9000
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: Unknown
Kernel version: 3.0.71-Semaphore_JB_2.9.18s
Try flashing "stepwise", ie.
2.3.6 ->CM9 -> Slim Bean.
This ensures that your IMEI is kept. When you flash CM9, let it boot completely first, then reboot into recovery and flash Slim.

Thank you! That indeed worked! One question: when I installed CM9 the firmware changed to XXJVT (and this is now the one shown under baseband version in SlimBean). Is there any major difference between XWJW1 and XXJVT, does it matter at all?
Modems do differ, mostly in terms of region (most modems are localised for certain countries). The differences between XXJVT and XWJW1 I have no idea about.
For most people it doesn't really matter, XXJVT is fine for them. Changing modems is only really something that you do either to save battery (some modems are better at battery than others), change for region (say XXJVT doesn't work too well in your region) or just to test other modems.

I'm having a similar issue now too. Going from jw6 to cm10.2 and lost my imei. Tried the advice above. jw6 - cm9.1 (imei fine) - cm10.1.2 and get the imei missing message. Maybe I'm gonna just have to stick with cm9. In the end it's just a backup phone for my kids but I want nova on it.

Hmmm.
Try
JW6 -> CM9 (If your IMEI was fine, then I don't really see why there's a problem...)
Then CM9 -> CM10 or CM10.1.0 (as another intermediate step, to see if your IMEI survives)
If your IMEI is fine, then flash 10.1.2
Odd though, the only time I've had IMEI loss going from CM9 to Jelly Bean was because I didn't let CM9 boot up properly first... So try to flash CM10.1.2 straight from CM9 and see if you run into the same problem again

[Q] Downgrade from JB 4.3 to stock 4.1.2 - IMEI error with EFS backup

Hey guys! Need some help here.
I know there are other threads on this forum about this but I've tried everything suggested to recover my IMEI but nothing works.
The problem is that I updated my Galaxy S3 to a custom rom with android 4.3 jelly bean, everything was okay, after that I decided to downgrade to the stock android 4.1.2 and my IMEI was not recognized any more, I must emphasize that before update from 4.1.2 to android 4.3, I did a backup of the EFS folder.
I restored the EFS folder with the 9 Steps to recover your imei guide on my new installed android 4.1.2 and I still got a wrong IMEI 0049... and Serial 00000... I have followed the guide lots of times and it stills the same.
I had read that it could be a modem MG6 problem in this post ... but now I'm with with stock 4.1.2 so that's discarded.
I also notice that it seems that the android os rewrites the nv_data.bin that I have previously copied into the EFS folder, is this possible?
Because in theory it should work:
I have a backup of the EFS folder got when I was 4.1.2.
I went back to Stock JB 4.1.2 rom.
I replaced the EFS folder with the "9 Steps to recover your imei", and it continues with the 0049 ...
Technical service want to charge $ 180 to restore it but it does not seem right for me when I have the backup and I could solve it.
Guys please some help!
Dude do you have a Nandroid backup from a previous rom? If yes restore it and you should recover your imei back, then retry to flash the new rom again. It worked for me!

I am aware that Philz lets you create a EFS backup on its own .
So pray tell the recovery that automatically backs up EFS in a Nandroid as it should be stickied in the faqs

I had similar issue upgraded to UK Stock 4.3 from Samfirmware ad had a terrible experience. I came across this 4.1.2 stock rom for Germany that worked with no issues as this one has MG4 modem that reads EFS2 partition newly implemented by Samsung,

simply flash it through ODIN

I managed to get mine back by going back to 4.3, thought i had bricked my phone. I then went to a newer 4.1.2 as above

Just check the modem version used by the ROM you have used. if it is equal or greater than MG4, then my solution is hoped to work. I believe that older modem version do not modify the EFS structure therefore no worries for old ones.

Made an account on here just to confirm that this method works. I downloaded the file which contained a single .tar, flashed via Odin but came to a boot loop. So cache partition wipe and factory reset brought me back to 4.1.2 and the IMEI is all good so I can connect to my mobile network fine. Thanks for that buddy, you're awesome

[Q] Help request with network reception after flashing a custom ROM.

Hi All,
Since this is my first post, my name is Robin and my hobbies are house music, playing the guitar and video games. nice to meet you!
I require some help with flashing a custom rom to my Samsung Galaxy S Advance (GT-I9070).
My goal is to have custom Rom working. The reason to change from stock 2.3.6. to a custom Rom is that is has become too slow and unresponsive to work with. I have changed to CM11 and then to Carbon Rom, and really like it, but both have a problem with reception. This is why i post it here, i don't think it is related to just a single Rom but to my phone in general.
I tried the following:
1. Gain root access through Odin. (baseband was originally I9700XXLK2, Dutch, carrier Tele2, which uses T-mobile network. not sure if the telephone was locked to this carrier).
2. flash TWRP using Odin.
3. download CM11 and google apps and flash it using TWRP.
4. no signal and com.phone.android stopped working every minute, as well as slow response when pressing power button.
5. flashed carbon rom, same problems.
6. went to xda-devs on irc for help, a nice guy explained to me that the problem likely resides in baseband.
7. downloaded the newest stock firmware for T-mobile in the netherlands from sammobile, extracted the modem.bin,md5 (after backing up efs and modem by help of the xda-dev on irc) and flashed it through odin as PDA after creating a tar file out of mode.bin.md5 ( by command tar -H ustar -c modem.img > modem2.tar)
8. Now the problems are gone except for the fact that i still have no reception! and baseband under settings --> phone is "smallband: unknown"!
Does anyone know of a solution to my problem? I wish to get reception. Did i not flash t he new modem image right?

4. no signal and com.phone.android stopped working every minute, as well as slow response when pressing power button.
5. flashed carbon rom, same problems.
6. went to xda-devs on irc for help, a nice guy explained to me that the problem likely resides in baseband.
7. downloaded the newest stock firmware for T-mobile in the netherlands from sammobile, extracted the modem.bin,md5 (after backing up efs and modem by help of the xda-dev on irc) and flashed it through odin as PDA after creating a tar file out of mode.bin.md5 ( by command tar -H ustar -c modem.img > modem2.tar)
8. Now the problems are gone except for the fact that i still have no reception! and baseband under settings --> phone is "smallband: unknown"!
Does anyone know of a solution to my problem? I wish to get reception. Did i not flash t he new modem image right?

You must flash stock JB to get its baseband to be able to use 4.1+ ROMs. If you have I9070, beware not to install I9070P firmware, because that will hardbrick your phone.
You can get firmware from samsung-updates.com or sammobile.com and look in general section for rest of guides, you have one thread with most needed stuff.

Thanks! That did the trick.
So, for anyone reading this later: in order to flash a custom 4.4.2 ROM to your GT-I9070 stock 2.3.6. phone, first flash jellybean! A nice guide is here:
