[Q] Flashing to Stock version firmware from CM7

Hey all,
I have some questions pertaining to the flashing of my Galaxy S. I'm currently running Gingerbread 2.3.4 on CM7-NIGHTLY-42, Baseband I9000XXJVK. I'm planning to install a stock version firmware from samfirmware. The problem is, the only regional version that has 2.3.4 support is the European one.
So my questions are,
1. Would it be ok for me to install the European version stock firmware (I9000OXAJVQ) eventhough I'm outside Europe?
2. Would there be complications arising from installing stock firmware outside my own region?
3. What are the appropriate steps to install the European stock version (I9000OXAJVQ) from my current CM7 NIGHTLY ROM?
4. Will my existing CWM get replaced by something else or what?

Hi, below is the method for instaling a FULL PDA to you're phone(it's quoted from rahulrulez guide for MIUI), if you follow this steps you will flash with a stock firmare by you're choice(in the example below is the froyo PDA but you can use any).
Edit:
- To answer your questions, about if it's ok or not... I don't have an answer but I don't see any problem working with any firmware....
- My advice is not to use a stock firmware because is not running smooth at all... try another custom rom if you don't like CM7
Flashing Froyo Base -
1. Unplug Galaxy S if it’s connected to PC and Switch it off completely.
2. Put your phone in Download Mode (Power Button + Home Button + Volume Down)
3. Open Odin 1.7
4. Click on PDA Tab in odin and select Select GT-I9000_FROYO_FULL_PDA.tar as PDA
5. Select 512pit as PIT and check re-partition tab.
6. Connect your phone to Computer’s USB Port.
7. Now hit START Button.
8. After successful flash, your phone is on Froyo 2.2 XXJPY with Froyo Bootloaders and Speedmod Kernel

I don't think there is a problem in flashing an European firmware eventhough you are outside it but do not forget to flash the proper modem for your area or you might have signal problems...

[Q] Roms with GKG3 based firmware

Hey everybody,
Im kinda new to droid development, and have played around with it a little (flashing roms, kernels, rooting etc) however, im curious why there are roms based on pretty much every other firmware other than GKG3. I might sound like a n00b for asking about this but its mainly for my knowledge. I figured KG3 would be fairly common as it is one of the North American firmwares, but I must be incorrect? Anyways any insight on this would be great. Also a quick question, seeing as I am a Bell I9000m SGS owner does it matter if I put firmware from say Europe on my phone? I have noticed that my signal decreases when I put a rom on that is JVR based? Curious if this causes my phone, seeing as the modem is being changed to JVR, to think that I am out of country and will inflict long distance charges. This probably sounds like a dumb question, and I dont really believe LD charges will apply, but some confirmation would be nice as google didnt really help me out on this one.

KG3 is 2.3.3 and although it was just issued to Bell and other N.American customers, the rest of the Anfroid world has been using 2.3.4 for 6 months and some have moved to 2.3.5. The roms you see here are cutting edge and most use the latest firmware. The last official and stable release was JVR a 2.3.4 firmware and there are many good roms for JVR. It is easy to keep your KG3 modem in place and the KG3 CSC file and just upgrade your system to a custom JVR kernel and JVR rom.

I tried flashing galaxian's jvr kernel and it just bootlooped so maybe I'm doing this wrong? I kept my stock modem and CSC, flashed kernel using oden, factory reset was done as well as a cache clear prior to the flash and all I'm getting is a bootloop so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing wrong any advice would be appreciated! And again thanx for the info in the previous post!

yes you flashed just the kernel, you must first flash the stock rom and then any custom kernel for the same firmware -- you need the stock rom to install the correct bootloaders prior to flashing the custom kernel
so in odin, flash JVR stock in pda, KG3 in phone and CSC
tick auto re-boot
then flash the custom kernel of choice in odin under pda

Hi guys - you guys might be able to help with a wee problem.
upgraded FW today via kies to 2.3.3 KG3 from froyo 2.2 with speedmod kernel.
in the process though i lost root but worse is i now don't have 3BR, when i used to. I still have 3 button download mode though.
I want to root again and flash a different kernel (for root but also for performance/tweaks) but worried to without 3BR ie. how will I access tweaks/enable root etc without it!?
Any ideas/advice please? Thanks

first flash a complete 2.3. firmware, either 2.3.4 JVR or 2.3.5 JVT. This should re-install basic 3BR functionality. I think you have not got the necessary bootloaders in the jump from froyo to GB and a complete stock install should correct this. Do tick re-partition and use 512 pit, do check auto-boot: let the phone boot and right itself. Check for 3BR and do a system reset.
Then flash KG3 modem and CSC. Your phone should then be functional.
Then flash a kernel with root inbuilt to it.
If you use the GTO Tornado kernel you can also clean your system completely as this stage instread. If you use another kernel, do the factory reset, davlik cache clean etc. prior to flashing the kernel as suggested above.
Do the clean prior to re-installing your apps.

Thanks! will give this a go but have only ever really flashed a kernel before with odin so want to be doubly sure about these steps if that's ok? apologies for my noobish ignorance
- only found a 2.3.4 JVR at samfirmware - getting this and the 512pit file. This should be fine?
- then flash a KG3 modem and CSC - any idea where I get those files from? - the ones i've got now i only got through kies (and when i do get em, when i do this in odin do i only use the phone/csc boxes and leave pit empty/uncheck re-partition?

Edit: forgot to say my reason for questioning the JVR is because the one i have is listed as European...where as I have a bell mobility but in australia - does this matter? latest FW for aus/america is JVN 2.3.3

There is a thread on the KG3 firmware with lots of these questions answered: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211939 and also the basic resource for firmware posted by Ramad here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 -- scroll down and you will find KG3 under N.American, he also has a nice set of illustrations for using odin.
You can also source a cwm zip for the KG3 modem from perka's stash here and on the market (free app) -- useful to havce the modem in cwm zip form as then you can just install a new stock firmawre such as JVR or JVT and add the modem in recovery.

Thanks so much again - that looks like a hefty bit of reading to be done there via your links so before I do that, just one more Q please - and apologies if the answer for this is somewhere in the links you've provided.
i was just trying to read up about why the samfirm file extracts only to a single .tar file called JVR_JVR_JVR and how to use that in Odin and came across this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
my Q is - in this thread he makes a strong point of stating not to tick repartition and not to put the .pit file...but you say to do so.
am i missing something obvious?

well different people different perspectives on re-partition and pit.
Tick re-partition and flash the pit file. Leave it un-ticked and do not flash pit file. That's the only key: do one or the other.
As I understand it, the reason to re-partition is that it re-sets the base file system upon which you are now flashing the stock firmware -- seems a basic step whenever you move firmware versions e.g. 2.2 to 2.3, 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 -- not so much if you are installing a rom or kernel within that family of firmware.
Since I always then convert the file system to ext2 to speed up the system and I use damain's kernel to clean the system, I do use the pit file whenever I flash a new stock firmware to clear the basic file system and further aid removal of legacy files that could complicate the install.

BTW the samfirmware files do extract using 7zip into the component parts for use in odin: pda (rom) phone (modem) and CSC. You then flash a custom kernel in the pda section if you use one for performance and root.

I just have to say a big fat D'oh! - why oh why could I not find the answer to what was bothering me most ie. apparent loss of recovery mode. The very first post in the first thread you linked gave me the answer - that it is now a 2BR (and tried it on my phone et voila, by magic I can get into recovery again!). Don't know how I could not find this thread even when I searched "KG3"!!

The 3 button recovery has changed for KG3. I believe it used to be upvol home and power. I do believe now it is volup, voldown, and power. This should work for you to get you into recovery to flash whatever you like. Also the samfirmware for JVR is branded with Swisscom and doesnt work very well for using it with a KG3 modem and CSC, with my experience anyway. I would recommend to go to a JVQ PDA and use KG3 for your Phone and CSC. Also after you have installed this make sure to check what your country code is and install it. Hope this helped

The firmware that he is referring to doesn't. It is only one file meant for the PDA section of ODIN. Not entirely sure why they did this but i was running into problems with it as well. If you know how to play around with the core files you could in theory extract it to its root and put multiple files into .tar files (ex. select factoryfs.rfs, param.lfs etc. and place it under one .tar) but thats a lot of playing around and potentially dangerous if not done correctly.

not sure which download you are referring to but there was a branded version of JVR and a generic one on samfirmware: I have the one that does not have the swisscom logo and it certainly was extracted by 7zip into its component files (pda/phone/CSC) as they are still on my pc in that format.
You can also source stock firmware from Ramad's thread.
And I stand by my comment that for anyone using KG3 as a modem, JVR is the most stable official release available, much better than JVQ. JVT has a lot of promise and will be a better firmware than JVR but it is not yet had all the bugs sorted and while there are Gold Rom version for JVR any JVT rom is still at a beta stage and should not be used yet by someone just starting to flash custom firmware (IMO).

have had 2 crashes now with Tornado Aureus RC1 - few little bugs/glitches eg with ringtone changing etc then on a reboot it won't go past the Tornado start screen with the big flame.
First time I just reflashed stock KG3 then reflashed the Tornado kernel, no problem. This time when I try to flash the Tornado kernel (either Aureus RC1 or Gold) it just bootloops at startup even though the flashing seems to go ok.
So now i'm back to (yawn) stock KG3 2.3.3. Really just want to root it again but with Tornado not seeming an option i'm finding it hard where to turn to root.

i have some signal problems with my I9000 (2.3.6),can i flash a modem using ODIN without a new ROM (i want to keep 2.3.6 and don't losing my apps and games),and i will not got any problems.

Yes u are able to flash only the modem, just select the modem file only and flash.
Not sure about the modem, but jjw2 has worked on my phone well with signal and battery wise.

and where i can find it ,and how can i know what my phone running know(modem).

The modem won't affect performance so apps and games should be fine.
Not sure where to find as I flash my modems from CWM recovery and I'm running CyanogenMod, that uses modems that are little bit different from stock ones.

Just search here on the forum for the modem you want.. or google for it
changing the modem will not affect your apps in anyway..
for checking the current modem, go to settings >> about phone >> baseband version

Flashing CM10 on GT-P1000R

Hi all. Couldn't find any posts about this specific problem so here goes:
I'm trying to CM10 on the following device:
Model number: GT-P1000R
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: P1000RUXKG1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UXKG1
I've rooted the device with CF-Root v3.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885734, CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.zip) which installs CWM 3.0.0.5. When I reboot in CWM Recovery mode and try to flash the zip, I get the following error:

I got around this by removing the assert line from updater-script and reflashing and although I see the logo, I get stuck in a boot loop as it tries to finish. Any way to get CM10 working on my GT-P1000R? No one else seems to have this device (it's GSM on Rogers in Canada).

P1000R is just a normal P1000 (M or R, plain P1000)
I have not tried but I am sure CM10 need CM9 first.

I have had the same difficulty flashing the rom for my GT-P1000R, as most roms are designed for the generic GT-P1000 and upon flashing check for the version and stop because ours is specific to Rogers. Exactly what did you do to modify the updater-script and what is the file called in rom ZIP package?
To be honest, ever since I was foolish enough to upgrade to Gingerbread earlier this year I have regretted it, as my Bluetooth no longer works with my HID keyboard. As I believe in going forward is best, I am looking to upgrade to ICS, but as a last resort going back to Froyo (if I can find it) would get me back the functionality I lost.
I would appreciate any help you can provide as I have scoured the net and found very little that deals specifically with our version (GT-P1000R) of the SGT.

Perhaps, but every time I try to flash a rom made for a P1000, the install fails indicating in the error message that it has detected my tablet as being a SGT P1000R, hence my original inquiry. I am sure it is simply a question of updating a config file to fool the installer, but which one?

It will ensure your system is detected as P1000

Thank you for the links to the Overcome method, and I now have successfully upgraded my former SGT P1000R, Android 2.3.3, to a SGT P1000, Android 2.3.6 - A significant improvement indeed! Unfortunately my test to see if my Bluetooth HID keyboard works with my new and improved SGT came up short - Will pair, but not connect.
After doing some research and coming to the sad conclusion that only an upgrade to ICS will do to get the aforementioned functionality to work, I tried AKOB and CM9 upgrades, following the instructions available. Each and every time I tried the upgrade, the tablet went into an endless loop of reboots indicating an error, which was displayed too quickly to read. I ended up having to restart the Overcome process again to salvage things.
Alas it is late and my quest to get ICS installed on my tablet (unless someone can tell me how to get a connection to my Bluetooth HID keyboard in 2.3.6) will wait for another day. Thanks anyway for the help.

IIRC the endless boot loop is due to the install process complaining that it couldn't find some partitions. When you get to that point you should just reboot to recovery and install the zip again for the 2nd time and it should work then.

I finally have a fully functional SGT P1000, running the latest version of CM9 ICS, and I must say this has breathed new life to my tablet! My sincere thanks for all the assistance I have received, despite what at times must have seemed endless silly questions for the more veteran members here on xda-developers.
Now time to get used to the ICS interface and some of the quirks (e.g. mapping of storage) that come with this new version of Android. However, thanks to the obvious removal of all the "bloatware" that Rogers added, the performance of my tablet is phenomenal! :victory:

Hi! First of all, thanks for all this information! I Also have a GT-P1000R (Rogers) running on the same gingerbread version UXKG1 and rooted with the original thread. So, literally, my tab is in the EXACT situation from the original thread. I am assuming that in order to flash any custom ROM's, i need my tablet to be recognized as a GT-P1000 . I am reading the manual, and i am wondering which modem to use. Or do I just need to do an update considering I am already running Gingerbread 2.3.3 ? My overall goal is to have my tablet recognized as a GT-P1000 (not with the r) and eventually upgrade to ICS or higher, also for the primary reason of using a bluetooth (hid supported) keyboard...among other things.
I am familiary with Odin and these instructions are great, I am just slightly unclear what to do in the case of already being on gingerbread 2.3.3, but working with a GT-P1000r. Thank you in advance for your help!

I also posted this above to another reply, but am worried it will get missed.
I have the same table you do (GT-P1000R) with Rogers, and it was rooted with the same file you used in this original thread on UXKG1.
Do you recall if you just had to do an update with overcome (since you were also running 2.3.3 , UXKG1 as per your first post) , or did you do a complete overhaul.
If you had to do the entire process, which modem did you use? these are the options given...
-GSM based GT-P1000 Tab (Asia, Europe, Middle East, Occeania/Africa, rest of world, etc..) : use JPZ MODEM
-North American T-Mobile Tab user: use T-Mobile Modem
-AT&T (USA), Tel Cel , etc - use JK3 modem.
I am assuming i would use the NA Tmobile based, considering Rogers is Canada's 'sister company' to T-Mobile? but i want to be sure...

Rogers is using 850/1900 MHz , the same as AT&T USA
the term NA T-Mobile there is to differentiate that with the UK T-Mobile, which use the usual European frequency.

Yes, use AT&T modem.
No other tips regarding special treatment, they are identical to normal P1000 except that the modem radio is made to work on 850MHz for the 3G part.
Anything you read about P1000 here applies equally to a P1000R
And you can use the Overcome method to get yourself a CWM recovery to flash ICS.
The link to its latest files and guide is in my signature.
If you are prepared to wipe out everything and start fresh.
Get the GB-stock-safe-v5 package (it has rom, odin, windows drivers, modem files)
and the PDF (read from page 7 onward)
and the Overcome Kernel 4.0 tar format.
Only the kernel, you don't need the Overcome Series 7 rom, if your eventual target is ICS.
Once you completed the step of flashing the kernel, you can reboot to CWM recovery and use that to flash ICS/JB, then its corresponding gapps, and you are done.

Last question...(i hope)

Only the kernel, you don't need the Overcome Series 7 rom, if your eventual target is ICS.
Once you completed the step of flashing the kernel, you can reboot to CWM recovery and use that to flash ICS/JB, then its corresponding gapps, and you are done.

This might sound dumb - but because i've boot looped my galaxy s I9000m before (that STUPID m at the end...just like the r for my tab..) .. i want to make sure what exactly will be happening. I am familiar with Odin and flashing kernels, not so much modems...
My end goal is to EVENTUALLY flash ICS or J/B , but i haven't thought that far as to which one to go with, etc..so i might not do that part for another week or so -whenever i have time.
If i only do the instructions you gave me (for the rom, odin , etc) and the kernel, my tab should be all good to still use in the mean time, until i decide to flash ICS or JB?
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.... I appreciate the assistance, and will be giving 'likes' and donations for SURE for all the help.

Yes, the guide is for Overcome Rom which is stock Samsung based gingerbread Rom.
The look is very closed to stock, but the kernel is improved.
Many are happy with just running it.

I am sorry, but as I read the thread through some more...i am still a bit confused of a couple of things. I know this is really probably a simple process...but bricking my tablet is the last thing i want to do.
Answers to the following would be so helpful:
1) Do I need to install the modem? I am currently on GB 2.3.3 unlocked and rooted. My tablet and root information is the same as the original thread. It is rooted with
CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.zip from the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317384 . I have not installed a modem before..so not exactly sure when/why this should be done and when it is not necessary to. - or do i ONLY need to go into odin and flash the kernel and rom. I am trying to get my tablet to be recognized as just GT-P1000 not with the r. It is the modem that will change how my tablet is recognized?
2) Do I need to insert a SIM card when I flash Overcome modem (if necessary) and kernel and Rom?
I do have a SIM card capable tablet, but I dont actually have a sim card for it. I use WIFI - and tether it from my phone if i need to. My service provider in Canada, Sasktel, blocks SIm cards from being able to use it in more than one device at a time (lame I know) , so buying a SIM card and not using the radio doesn't make sense. that being said , I DO want to be able to use the radio with a SIM card if i need to, like when I travel overseas and purchase one for their carriers.

Your current rooting method leave your tab as P1000R, that is why I recommended overcome from scratch.
And I didn't know you are rooted and have cwm
Modem is for mobile network.
Wen you flash with Odin "repartition" , your modem will be wiped out.
A modem is required.
if you never use mobile function, any modem will do.
Remember being P1000R, if you are overseas other than with USA at&t, you only get 2G.
In Europe and Asia the UMTS freq is 2100Mhz and your tab is incapable of doing that.
You not need SIM to flash overcome.
Since you have cwm, you can just flash overcome ROM series 7 from cwm. Try that.

I just just that, went into my already cwm and flashed the rom - must say...impressive! wifi works (connected to two devices for trial, as i've had issues with this in the past) and works great.

TBH - i love this ROM , and i would love to keep it as this. but it is does not have HID bluetooth compatibility. any plans for the future to have this available on this ROM?

[Q] No Service after Installing Custom ROM

Hi,
I'm pretty new to the whole custom ROM scene and have come across a problem when installing CynogenMod version 10.1.3-RC2-galaxysmtd. I've been able to get everything else working but can't seem to get any network service or GPS.
I've read numerous articles on flashing a correct radio or installing a new modem (not sure if this is the same thing or not?) if you can't get any service but haven't done this yet. I've also read articles on moving the files from sdcard\backup\efs into the efs folder in the phone memory which I've tried but doesn't seem to work either.
My baseband version is I9000XXJVT and the rom is running on android 4.2.2. Before the ROM I'm currently on I came from a stock Gingerbread ROM. Was there something I needed to do when coming from a stock ROM that I missed?
Any help on this would be appreciated as I've hit a bit of brick wall

Hey there,
So long story short, you've probably lost your IMEI. You can check this by going into Settings -> About Phone -> Status then scrolling down to IMEI. If it begins with 044 or something similar then you know you've lost it.
So to solve this:
1. Flash back to the stock Gingerbread you were on by means of Odin, there are many guides for this but the one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444308 is quite comprehensive (and leave the OP a thanks as well)
2. Download CM9 from the Cyanogenmod website.
3 Root your S again (this will depend on which Gingerbread rom you flash).
4. Boot into CWM recovery. Do the usual data/cache/Dalvik wipes.
5. Install CM9. Let it boot. You don't need to download ICS gapps for CM9 as all you need it to do is boot.
The reason why you install CM9 is to make sure that the IMEI sticks when you then flash a JB rom. Flashing straight to JB from GB tends to lose the IMEI as said before.
6. Once you've let it boot, reboot into recovery again. You don't really need to do the same three wipes again. Install CM10.1.3 RC2. You'll need to flash the zip a few times- three times at least. Flash Gapps as well, of course.
That should hopefully make your signal reception and GPS work
(I covered this quite briefly so if you do need clarification on any of the steps don't hesitate to ask)

I checked and I do have an IMEI number which begins with 3 not 0. I also checked the IMEI number and it brought back the correct phone details.
Should I still follow the guid you have linked to or do I not need to do that?

Odd... If the IMEI is intact then you should be geting reception. What you could do is make a backup of your rom and then try the steps I suggested to see if you get the same problem.
Most likely however its due to your modem. In the development thread there's a list of modems compatible with the I9000. Try flash XXJW4 or one for your country through recovery and see if that fixes anything- if not, try the steps.
