flash modem using ODIN - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i have some signal problems with my I9000 (2.3.6),can i flash a modem using ODIN without a new ROM (i want to keep 2.3.6 and don't losing my apps and games),and i will not got any problems.
and please what is the good modem (if possible for north Africa)
thank you .

Yes u are able to flash only the modem, just select the modem file only and flash.
Not sure about the modem, but jjw2 has worked on my phone well with signal and battery wise.

thank you Wesku,
there will not be any problem with the ROM, apps and games after the flash.
and where i can find it ,and how can i know what my phone running know(modem).

The modem won't affect performance so apps and games should be fine.
Not sure where to find as I flash my modems from CWM recovery and I'm running CyanogenMod, that uses modems that are little bit different from stock ones.

Just search here on the forum for the modem you want.. or google for it
changing the modem will not affect your apps in anyway..
for checking the current modem, go to settings >> about phone >> baseband version

[Q] Help! re: Flashing a Modem (Bell user) will GPS work ?

Ok so here's the deal.
I flashed JVK 2.3 (Darky's Rom v10 rc6 DarkyCore Kernel 2.2) and so the baseband is JVK i'm assuming
I'm having issues regarding the 850 band.
Q: what's the best modem for Bell users ?
Q: am I able to JUST flash a modem ? if so, how ? (through ODIN or CWM?)
Q: Do I just put the modem file into the modem thing in odin and hit flash? can I flash a Froyo 2.2 (JL2) modem onto my Gingerbread (2.3) ROM ? If not, what's the best Modem to use ?
I'm also having issues regarding downloading MP3's -- they all fail like those mp3 finder apps. But I can preview. WTF?
also my GPS isn't working - does a modem fix this ?

I am running KC1 - I have tried JL2, JL2 with JM9 GPS fix, JK4 but KC1 is the best to date and gives me best GPS performance to date. If you use non "native Bell" modem ie new Gingerbread modems there are steps to take to ensure 850MHz still works. You will need to review this forum I think. I have not tried such modems to date. You can use Froyo or GingerBread modems - no issue.

Yes, CWM is best. I have many modems in the SDCARD root, quick and easy to change.

Use CWM - get the modem files from Perka's File stash - look for the 850MHz section

Se above. But you should search this forum under GPS. If GPS has never worked you may have to do some hardware work. ie the contact from the PCB to the GPS antenna is pretty crappy and you may have to disassemble the SGS, stretch the contact spring a bit then re-assemble.

If using Odin(Definitely easier to use CWM as Jim said) you put the file(make sure it is for odin and not CWM) into the "Phone" section. And if on Gingerbread you're probably using CWM3 so if flashing it via CWM make sure it's a CWM3 version of the modem zip

[Q] Data connection lost.

Hey folks, has anyone here experience any issue with data connection after flashing a modem?
I am on AT&T / KK1 / LA4 Modem right now. The phone was fine, until I flashed the LA4 modem. My data connection will disconnect itself once in a while, and it wouldn't come back up unless I switch on and off the flight mode. I tried to set to phone to WCDMA only as some suggested in the S2 forum, but the problem still there. And flash to other modems doesn't help either
Could it be possible I break some files during flash? I was using Speed Mod kernel, and switched back to CF-Root.
Thank you very much in advance~
Maybe an incompatibility between your base rom and the LA4 modem broke up some parameters. Did you try to flash the stock modem according to your rom ? Wipe cache and dalvik ? Re-enter your apn ?
Sadly... i didnt mark down the stock modem.. the rom is zskk1 . I did both wipe before installing modem all the time. Tried sone other modem like la3 etc... not helping guess i will try to flash it to stock and see if it helps..
Thx for the suggeation tho

For your ZSKK1 ROM, the modem seems to be KJ6, have you tried it ?
You can grab it from there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344759

Modem for CM9?

Please teach me about modems.
I'm on CM9 nightlies but my modem seems to be an old one from the Gingerbread days (XXJVK). Data reception is often poor so I'd like to try a newer modem.
How do I choose a newer/better modem? I'm thinking of just flashing a UK one from the latest official stock Gingerbread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804682) to see if its any better.
I've not been able to find clear information or instructions about which modems are compatible with CM9 or how to flash them.
How can I backup/restore my current modem? Nandroid backup, or is there a quicker way that just backs up the modem?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Just note down the details of your baseband and firmware in about phone, that will be good enough to get back to it, if ever you want it by flashing them again, by downloading them again. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
Go here and download the modem for your location and flash it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783

Thanks for the advice but this raises further questions. Which of the modems in that thread is the newest/best, which is for "my region" (I am in London), and are they CM9 compatible (they all say CM7 in the filename).
Odin must be used to flash a modem? I thought it can be done from recovery?

read the header, its good for CM 7 and CM 9, only you need to identify the modem by the last three alphabets, which can be same as the ROM/modem you are using or you can compare with the firmware list for Europe modems to select
these (CM7/CM 9 modems) are .zip files so you can just use update.zip from SD card but original gingerbread modems are in .tar format and has to be flashed with odin
OK, I'm still a bit unclear. How can I return to XXJVK after flasing? this one? radio-cm-7-GalaxyS-JVK-signed.zip
Three alphabet letters same as my rom/modem? Well my rom is CM9 nightly so no 3 alpha characters there. My modem is JVK but the JVK isnt a reference to my country, thats the XX bit? And XX 2 characters is not anywhere in these modem filenames. If I flash from JVK modem to JVK modem what have I achieved, nothing?

Basebands

I know out there is a bunch of baseband to flash through Odin. What about make them flashable?. What for?, for example I flashed Enox and Benz roms that are not for my specific model (L) and my phone boot without a problem, but just get not network signal. So I was guessing that will work If I flash my baseband (lubama1) over the one that came with the rom. Will the rom work without a problem I think, cuz that is what I did in my Atrix 4g times.
Why flashable, just to do it on the way. If someone can help me making my stock baseband flashable I will appreciate it.
Thnx
I'm pretty sure those roms doesn't change your modem, but only system files.
Why it doesn't work is probably because the config is for i8190 and not i8190L modem.
Open the rom.zip and see if you find a modem.bin in there.. I think not.

even if you flash your baseband i think it will not work. wrong rom to your variant
any way, if you want, attach your baseband to make it flashable via odin.

[Q] Help request with network reception after flashing a custom ROM.

Hi All,
Since this is my first post, my name is Robin and my hobbies are house music, playing the guitar and video games. nice to meet you!
I require some help with flashing a custom rom to my Samsung Galaxy S Advance (GT-I9070).
My goal is to have custom Rom working. The reason to change from stock 2.3.6. to a custom Rom is that is has become too slow and unresponsive to work with. I have changed to CM11 and then to Carbon Rom, and really like it, but both have a problem with reception. This is why i post it here, i don't think it is related to just a single Rom but to my phone in general.
I tried the following:
1. Gain root access through Odin. (baseband was originally I9700XXLK2, Dutch, carrier Tele2, which uses T-mobile network. not sure if the telephone was locked to this carrier).
2. flash TWRP using Odin.
3. download CM11 and google apps and flash it using TWRP.
4. no signal and com.phone.android stopped working every minute, as well as slow response when pressing power button.
5. flashed carbon rom, same problems.
6. went to xda-devs on irc for help, a nice guy explained to me that the problem likely resides in baseband.
7. downloaded the newest stock firmware for T-mobile in the netherlands from sammobile, extracted the modem.bin,md5 (after backing up efs and modem by help of the xda-dev on irc) and flashed it through odin as PDA after creating a tar file out of mode.bin.md5 ( by command tar -H ustar -c modem.img > modem2.tar)
8. Now the problems are gone except for the fact that i still have no reception! and baseband under settings --> phone is "smallband: unknown"!
Does anyone know of a solution to my problem? I wish to get reception. Did i not flash t he new modem image right?

You must flash stock JB to get its baseband to be able to use 4.1+ ROMs. If you have I9070, beware not to install I9070P firmware, because that will hardbrick your phone.
You can get firmware from samsung-updates.com or sammobile.com and look in general section for rest of guides, you have one thread with most needed stuff.

Thanks! That did the trick.
So, for anyone reading this later: in order to flash a custom 4.4.2 ROM to your GT-I9070 stock 2.3.6. phone, first flash jellybean! A nice guide is here:
