Title pretty much says it all. I've got myself in a pickle. I've manually downloaded the 4.3 OTA. Do I rename it or keep it as is? Right now it's called OTA_M7_WL_JB43_SENSE50_SPCS_MR_Sprint_WWE_3.04.651.2-1.31.651.2_release_335437r9p4z0zrva4gqsfs.zip
I'm about to install the stock recovery as soon as I'm done pushing this huge OTA file onto /sdcard.
What do I do from here?
I renamed the OTA update.zip and flashed the stock recovery. Stock recovery is telling me unable to mount sdcard. What the crap.
There is an option to install from SD Card and one for internal storage in the stock recovery. Choose the internal storage option and then navigate to your update.zip.
NOTE: You really ought to not only be on the stock recovery, but the stock ROM as well. The update doesn't usually contain a full /system to flash, just a few files and some patches to existing files.

I was S-Off and was going to go back to S-On and go back to fully locked, no tampered message, and all that. I think I went s-on THEN tried flashing the full 4.3 firmware, which I believe was my ultimate mistake. Watching it go through the steps, it looked like it installed about half, instead of the whole thing.
I'm sitting here on HBOOT 1.55 and have no idea if it looks the way it's supposed to. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed twrp and flashed back to OMJ's stock 4.3 rom, but I'm now S-ON with the newest HBOOT and no way to know if the entire 4.3 firmware truly installed all the way. What worries me is when I look at the HBOOT now there's some text in red that didn't use to be there that says "OS-1.29.651.10 (3.04.651.2)" Which is truly baffling me. I've never seen that before on the bootloader screen.

A couple of months ago I rooted my N1 FRF91 with Universal Androot. Later I flashed psfMod (based on CMW) custom recovery using flash_image recovery.
Now I don't have any use for custom recovery or a rooted device anymore, and want to get back on track to be prepared OTA 2.3.
I have received notifications for 2.2.1 OTA (2-part update), but the device just locks up during the upgrade and gets back to rooted 2.2 after a reboot.
So how do I apply the 2.2.1 update? Could I just flash the original recovery with flash_image (and what file should I get in that case), unroot with androot and just use the OTA? Or is there any better/easier way?
The question feels kinda nooby, but the only guides I find is to get back to shipping conditions (Which I don't want to keep my settings and so on),using fastboot which I can't since my bootloader still is locked or assumed that you are using a custom ROM which I don't.
Thanks for your help!
There is no need to get rid of a custom recovery or root to apply those updates. This has been covered in many threads.
This is what I would do. Use flash_image to flash Amon_RA 1.9.0 recovery. Then download the update (make sure you download the correct one: there is one that is FRG83D from FRF91, which is what you will need if you are running FRF91)and save it to the root of your sdcard. Then boot into recovery, and flash the update. (You will lose root and your custom recovery, but just root again if you want.) That covers part 2 of 2 of the update.
If you want to flash the first part, dowload the HBOOT 0.35 update file (floating around the forums) and place it in the root of your sdcard. Boot into recovery and flash that. You may have problems flashing certain custom recoveries after you flash the 0.35 HBOOT.
Thanks for your reply. If I follow your steps, the 2.3 OTA will work when it eventually comes?

If you keep a custom recovery, you will still get the notification, but you will have to manually apply it. If you keep the stock recovery, it should be able to apply it automatically. No word yet on if the newer HBOOT is a requirement for 2.3 or not.
Please read this post in its entirety before downloading and flashing.
THIS IS FOR I9020T ONLY! IF YOU DECIDE TO GET BRAVE AND TRY THIS ON AN I9020A, I9023 OR D720, MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO ANY PHONE BY USING THIS ROM.
YOU MUST FLASH THIS ROM USING CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. THIS WILL NOT FLASH USING THE STOCK ANDROID 3E RECOVERY AS THE ZIP FILE IS NOT SIGNED. I HAVE NOT TESTED IT ON OTHER RECOVERIES.
This is probably more for posterity now than anything else, however I have created a CWM-flashable full on ROM for the original Nexus S Gingerbread firmware, version 2.3, build GRH55. This is built exactly the same way that the full OTA ROM packages for 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 were built.
Some notes:
1. Since GRH55 did not include the script that automatically overwrites alternate recovery images with the stock one (this was introduced in GRH78/2.3.1), flashing this ZIP will flash the stock Android 3e recovery that came with GRH55. This means that ClockworkMod Recovery will go away after flashing this ZIP and you will need to re-flash it manually if you want it back.
2. Flashing this ZIP will overwrite your bootloader and radio, restoring them to I9020XXJK1 and I9020XXJK8 respectively. These are the versions that came stock with GRH55.
3. GRH55 is receiving OTA updates. As of this writing, the latest version of Android is 2.3.4, and Google is pushing an OTA update for 2.3 to 2.3.4.
4. This ZIP will NOT clear your user data or cache. For users running a stock ROM, I would highly suggest clearing your data and cache manually as sometimes downgrading without clearing data and cache can cause problems. If you are coming from a non-stock ROM, you are required to clear your data and cache or the ROM will not boot.
5. The market app works just fine but does not update to the current style and look. The market app that comes with GRH55 is version 2.12, which is the look that's now 2 generations old. For whatever reason, Google no longer allows version 2.12 to update to newer versions. That said, if you install a later version of the Android Market (3.0.27 as of this writing) manually, it will update to future versions automatically.
6. Since writing NFC tags wasn't introduced until GRI40/2.3.3, the Tags app is read-only.
7. There is no video chatting through Google Talk. This feature was not introduced until GRJ22/2.3.4.
Instructions:
1. Download the Stock GRH55 ROM package here.
2. Copy it to the root of your USB storage.
3. Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery (or flash it).
4. Select "Install ZIP From SD Card"
5. Select "Choose ZIP"
6. Find the ZIP file and select it.
7. Wait for it to finish.
8. Wipe data and cache (optional but HIGHLY recommended for stock ROM users and REQUIRED for non-stock ROM users)
9. Reboot and have fun.
Reserved...just in case.

You can install a later market version manually, but if you do, you'll have to re-install it every time you reboot as the market updater will remove it and restore it back to 2.12. For whatever reason, Google forces GRH55 to stay with 2.12. You may be able to root the ROM and then upload a newer version into /system/app and overwrite 2.12 entirely, but do so at your own risk. If you want the latest version of the market (2.3.6 as of this writing), you can get it here.

NEWBIE HERE. Just to be clear, my phone has to be rooted to do this, right?
Not necessarily. You just need to have ClockworkMod recovery installed. That is independent from having root.

Isn't that related to ROM Manager? ROM Manager is saying my phone has to be rooted to use it.

Again, it can be. Or you can unlock your bootloader (you can find threads on how to do that, it's very simple) and then flash clockworkmod manually. Basically, you need ClockworkMod in order to root, but the two are not synonymous.

Problem. Unlocking the bootloader deletes USB storage. Kinda don't want that. Not being able to access my USB data is the reason I'm here in the first place. I know there's software to back up internal storage but what about SD storage? Of course on this phone there's no SD card to remove.

I would just plug the phone into your computer via USB and copy everything to your computer, then once you unlock the bootloader, copy it back. That'll take care of your USB storage.

Like I said I lost USB connectivity, from the manual 2.3.4 install, which is why I'm trying to go back to an older version in the first place. No SD card on the NS. Do you know of another way?
try to install a program named websharing.
and you will be able to ftp your phone with you pc.
after that will be easy to transfer your SD data to your PC.

That sounds like a great idea. After I back them up I don't care if the SD gets wiped. Thanks for that.

I am on 2.3.4 GRJ22 Nexus One.
I was following the Cyanogenmod wiki page for installing the custom Rom.
But after completing Clockwork Mod Recovery, I am unable to reach clockwork mod recovery screen. I reach bootloader screen and select bootloader and than recovery, but screen with exclamation mark and android comes in and by pressing volume up and power button I reach to Android recovery screen. How can I reach Clockwork Mod Recovery screen.
I am doing something wrong or having 2.3.4 GRJ22 previously before unlocking the bootloader, android stopped the clockwork recovery method.
Plus I already have 5.08.00.04 radio on my android. To be exact baseband version is already _5.08.00.04, do I still need to flash the radio or can skip that process.
My guess is that you haven't removed the two files that restore stock recovery upon reboot...
I managed to reach Clockwork Recovery point.
1) Shall I skip Radio update step as I already have _5.08.00.04 or is it must for CM Rom.

There's no reason to flash it if you already have it. Radios are the most dangerous thing to flash, so if it's already on your device, proceed to installing CM.
I think DR is saying remove old recovery--install-recovery.sh from--
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Do I need to change the file name to update.zip just like manual update of Google official updates or will it work without changing the name and placing the original CM file to root of my sd card plus google apps on the root of sd card.

You can name them and place them wherever you want on the SD card. CWM allows you to navigate your folders and flash the zips from there.
But point is still unclear....Will it work without changing the name or it is must to change the name of the Rom zip file.

Nope you can name the zip file whatever you want or leave it as it is.
Hi all,
I think I have to finally update my rooted Nexus 2.2.1 to the latest GB because the update nagging is driving me crazy :-(
So anyhow, can somebody tell me if this will work as expected (outcome should be rooted GB 2.3.4)
1. I have latest ClockworkMod Recovery installed
2. I grabbed the official update from /cache. Build.prop says it's GRJ22. Size is 89MB. The zip contains the update plus boot.img and radio.img
3. Renamed the file to update.zip and placed on root of sdcard
4. placed su.zip and fix-recovery.zip in the root of sdcard
So the plan is to reboot into recovery, flash the update.zip. Flash su.zip. Flash fix-recovery.zip and finally reboot.
The outcome should be a rooted GB 2.3.4 with all my apps and settings still present. Will this process work?
Thanks
Raf
Edit zip file and remove recovery image.
i wanna know if the wonk issue in grj22 has been solved..
anyone know?
Flash as a zip from sd, not as an update...
Thanks it worked
And special thanks to bohlool for saving my butt. Per his suggestion I removed the recovery image from the zip file prior to installing and it saved my root because the update rebooted the phone after installing it without giving me a chance to install su.zip.
Thanks again.
Raf
If you flash as a zip from SD, instead of as an update, your phone doesn't reboot...
I did just that, in CWM I selected flash zip, selected the file on SD, and confirmed. I started flashing, then rebooted once, then rebooted a second time and finally booted in the OS. Because I removed the recovery from the update, it did not reflash the recovery and I was able to reboot into CWM recovery and apply the su.zip update (and this time it did not reboot on it's own).
Btw, my GRJ22 update was 89MB vs 6MB what has been posted here as an official update.
Raf
Yeah, removing the recovery from the zip is possibly an easier way. My comment was for anyone who didn't know how to remove the recovery, our didn't feel comfortable doing it, etc...
You are welcome

I apply any update like this, full updates you need to remove image file, and partial updates, you need to remove recovery folder. This way, you will keep your recovery and can flash su and other zips later.
cheers.
I can't seem to get the OTA update to work. I am currently on NCE 4.2.2. I have been having lots of signal problems and finally decided to update, but it will not update. I have tried a normal factory reset, SD card update (stock recovery), flashed stock TAR files via Odin, and have tried the regular OTA countless times. This is ridiculous: it should update. There is no reason for it to fail: it is completely stock. Root has been wiped out (confirmed with a root checker). I miss my N5 .
Any other ideas? Sorry if I posted in the wrong section. Move me around as needed. Thanks!

Use this follow steps exactly make sure you have all files downloaded to your computer and also the ones needed to store on your ex SD card. Take your time and don't skip any steps.

To get it to complete stock all I need is the one .zip file (G900A_NCEtoNG3_OTA.zip) correct? I tried to flash it in the stock recovery and it spat out some error when it checked the system, tried again and then formatted the data partition. I also tried flashing the SM-G900A 4.4.2 G900AUCU1ANCE Firmware (AP/CP/CSC files) in Odin which was successful but the OTA keeps failing. I am sure I am missing something obvious but I don't see it.

If you're on stock NCE put the NCE to NG3 zip in your ex SD card go to stock recovery and scroll down to install from ex SD card select the zip and let it do its thing.
Its just easier than the stupid OTA that failed with me over and over as well
