Clockwork Mod Recovery - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on 2.3.4 GRJ22 Nexus One.
I was following the Cyanogenmod wiki page for installing the custom Rom.
But after completing Clockwork Mod Recovery, I am unable to reach clockwork mod recovery screen. I reach bootloader screen and select bootloader and than recovery, but screen with exclamation mark and android comes in and by pressing volume up and power button I reach to Android recovery screen. How can I reach Clockwork Mod Recovery screen.
I am doing something wrong or having 2.3.4 GRJ22 previously before unlocking the bootloader, android stopped the clockwork recovery method.
Plus I already have 5.08.00.04 radio on my android. To be exact baseband version is already _5.08.00.04, do I still need to flash the radio or can skip that process.

My guess is that you haven't removed the two files that restore stock recovery upon reboot...

I managed to reach Clockwork Recovery point.
1) Shall I skip Radio update step as I already have _5.08.00.04 or is it must for CM Rom.

There's no reason to flash it if you already have it. Radios are the most dangerous thing to flash, so if it's already on your device, proceed to installing CM.

I think DR is saying remove old recovery--install-recovery.sh from--
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh

Do I need to change the file name to update.zip just like manual update of Google official updates or will it work without changing the name and placing the original CM file to root of my sd card plus google apps on the root of sd card.

You can name them and place them wherever you want on the SD card. CWM allows you to navigate your folders and flash the zips from there.

But point is still unclear....Will it work without changing the name or it is must to change the name of the Rom zip file.

Nope you can name the zip file whatever you want or leave it as it is.

[Q] ROM Manager Signature Verification Failure

A few weeks ago I flashed the Cognition V2.2 ROM and everything was fine until it started getting twitchy a few days ago. I tried to use the ROM Manager to restore the backup that was created during the flash but I keep getting the same error message and the phone does not seem to go into the Clockwork Mod Recovery but stays in the Android system recovery. The message says that the whole-file signature has failed to verify and that the installation was aborted. Does anyone have any idea how I can get my phone back to normal?

Common knowledge that the version of Cognition you are running is not supported by ROM Manager, it is 3e recovery and Clockwork needs 2e. You can update to the newer Cognition which has 2e recovery. I recommend you read the facts sheet befor flashing, the method you should use is Odin one click back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, then master clear so that nothing is lingering from your previous setup, backup everything from your internal storage to your pc first, this will wipe everything from your internal, replace it after you finish Master clear. you should only replace the update.zip, ClockworkMod and your music, photo's and that stuff. Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
Here's the link for the new Cognition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
So I tried what you recommended and got my phone back to the stock condition but I'm still not able to use ROM manager or flash another ROM. After I root the phone I install ROM Manager, flash it to the current edition and then try to reboot into recovery but when it gets to recovery it gives the following error message...
--Installing from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted
Also the header of the screen states that I am in Android system recovery <2e>. If I am not mistaken, shouldn't I be in recovery <3e>? If so how do I get there? I've tried flashing the stock Kernel but that didn't work and I even installed the internal betas correctly but no cigar.

so put it in download mode, and use ODIN one click back to stock...then leave it the hell alone....
Like I said, I've already used Odin. Everything is back to stock except for the Kernel and a stock kernel install with Odin doesn't seem to work. Odin says that the install passed but nothing changes on the phone itself. All things considered, the phone is stock but not capable of going into Clockwork Mod recovery.

Rom manager will work just fine with 2e recovery. Just delete any update.zip files you have in your home directory - then open rom manager and reflash clockworkmod the cappy - then you should be good to go.
As for whether or not that is the stock kernel I am not sure, but how can you tell just by looking at it if you don't know which kernel is the stock one?
I've mounted my internal and external sd cards and removed any updates but it still gives the same error. After I used the odin one-click to flash the stock rom I used the master clear as recommended. Now, if I am not mistaken, shouldn't that erase all of my user data? I reinstalled my espn app so I could follow my football team and the app still remembered my preferences and favorites. This makes me think that the master clear did not finish the job. Thoughts?

Master clear should've done that. If you are restoring your apps and settings using Titanium Backup then you are restoring user data which you should not do.
When you Master Clear is your device on and on the home screen, it needs to be. Don't Master Clear in Recovery mode or Download mode or it does nothing. Also you need to have debugging on.

That is the stock kernel. Just so you know if you are running stock with root you can simply place the update.zip from the Clockwork folder, you should have backed up before flashing and Master clear, back into your internal. ClockworkMod does fail on first attempt to flash sometimes, it happenned to me the first time I flashed it, the second time worked like a charm. Are you rooted? You need root to use ROM Manager and debugging should be on.

After you deleted the update.zip then opened rom manager and flashed clockworkmod it should of put a new update.zip on your phone in your home directory - can you confirm that this is the case?
Also you may not have had a successful master clear - you may want to do it again then redo odin3 one click. Also if I am remembering correctly I believe you have the option to clear cache or user data or both in stock recovery you may want to try that as well.
It all works now. The issue was with the master clear. I guess that I did try to run it in the download mode. Thanks a million guys, i really appreciate it.
Maybe I was a bit premature on that. ROM Manager works beautifully but I cannot install updates or flash a custom ROM. The Manager was able to backup the system correctly and enter clockwork mod recovery but it cannot install the update. If the update is on the internal SD it says that...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(bad)
and if the update is on the external SD it says that there is no such file or directory. Am I doing it wrong or is there still an underlying issue?

/sdcard/update.zip should only boot into clockwork recovery from stock recovery or boot to stock recovery from clockwork recovery if you flashed clockworkmod correctly from rom manager - and so long as you are not renaming any other files as update.zip after you flash clockworkmod recovery.
Which custom rom are you attempting to install?
I got it. The zip file was corrupted. Now, should I be able to boot into normal clockwork mod recovery with the Cognition 2.2 Beta 7 cuz when I try clockwork recovery it boots into normal recovery? I'm still a little hazy about all this.

When you first boot into recovery it should be stock recovery. While in stock recovery when you select reinstall packages it will reboot into clockwork recovery - if you flashed clockworkmod recovery correctly from rom manager and it put the appropriate update.zip into your home directory.
And just to note: don't be renaming any files as update.zip if you are using clockwork recovery to flash something.

uh oh....trying to put in a rom

Ive been flashing roms for some time, though this is my first attempt on the captivate.
Followed the instructions np.
Using rom manager backed up my stock rom.
made sure it saved to sd.
used titanium made sure all apps were backed up.
downloaded cogs newest version.
opened rom manager selected flash for captivate.
turned phone off.
rebooted into rom manager
wiped phone via directions.
selected cog via sd card
now Ive been sitting at the installing update window for roughly 20 minutes without the progress bar moving at all...
any advice?
I did just do a battery pull and it seems that im back to att stock. No rom.
ive just tried running it again and I just sit at installing update...
I did have ryan zas oclf on prior and I dont know if I removed. however since Im back to stock now shouldnt it be gone?
Wouldnt be able to prevent it now would it?
Been there done that
Usb debugging, enable it
Simple mistake man, no big deal
From a phone
Well turning on usb debug wasnt it but i did reinstall oclf and it shows its still active batteries just to low to remow waiting...
Ok any othet ideas? Oclf says its not inthe one running its a different one. Guess ill try to reflash agafin and install anyone else got an idea?
Finding
opening
installing
then it just sits forever
anyone?
Try to download the file again, it may have been corrupted during download
Edit...not clear are you booting into recovery, selecting the rom zip file, etc or actually rebooting phone and going into rom manager?
You need to boot into recovery and select the zip there if you are not doing it that way
Correct im in recovery and selecting it.
Download the stock ODIN 1 click and flash that then re-root and install ROM manager and then flash COG
sadly ive done this also.
used odin one click last night went back to stock then rooted again and tried and it still just sat at the installing line for an hour.
something is not working and I cannot figure it out.
1. make sure you move the zip (as you downloaded it, don't unzip) to the root of your sdcard.
2. open rom manager, flash CWM if you haven't already.
3. using rom manager, backup your current stuff under a name you'll recognize
4. turn off phone. boot into recovery
5. if it shows the 2e or 3e recovery, choose the 2nd option: "install update.zip", this should open up CWM recovery
6. from CWM recovery, go down to "install zip from sdcard"
7. then: "choose zip from sdcard"
8. then you select the zip that you moved to your sdcard in STEP 1.
that should do it.

every step done. Even a odin flash to stock prior. Locks up every time at installing update, it will sit there all night.
Thought I was reading on Cog's latest build a few people having issues installing using the latest ROM Manager and CWM.
I think this is the older version of the update.zip and maybe it will install Cog.
Also you can bypass the whole rooting/dowloading ROM Manager prior to flashing if you use this update.zip.
Odin 1-Click back to stock.
Put in the update.zip to your SDCard
Reboot into recovery.
Run the update.zip under recovery.
It will do a short reboot back to the screen.
Run it once more and you should be in Clockwork Recovery advanced menu.
Attempt to install the Cog.zip again and see if it works.
Unfort I'm running Assonance's latest build and didn't run into any issues.
Going to try it in a bit.

Check out the wiki thread for adam's Axura ROM. The process should be the same, just use the ROM of your choice. I'd try another download/different ROM, there may be an issue with your download, or a bug in the ROM possibly?

Two suggestions - not sure if you've already attempted these.
1. Have you tried flashing an older version of Cognition? Possible that there is just something silly about your setup that is preventing you from flashing this specific version.
2. Along the same lines, have you tried flashing to Cognition using one of the Odin flashable ROMs? I'm personally a bit mystified by these, but I'm just a wimpy Mac user.
Older versions of Cognition here.
The version of CWM rom manager downloads should be okay. A master clear and stock fhlash should help

Did you put the update.zip on your internal SD card? If not I have attached it to this post. Please be careful in the future where you post though. There are a few bad apples that will rip you apart.
More info is needed to help you out. What setup where you running before?? Do you have the correct update.zip for CWM on the root of your sd and are you reinstalling packages x2 in 2e recovery and its not working or what?? Pretty vague in the OP.
EDIT: If you master cleared it wiped your sd and you need to put the update.zip that adamholden posted back on your sd.
whats the update.zip file? root access? I have root. everyone knows if you post in general you dont get replies.....
The update.zip that he posted is not root. Its for CWM and you should always keep it on your internal sd to always have CWM available. Just move the zip to your SD and select reinstall packages two times for the green txt CWM recovery.

CWM is an update.zip file on your sdcard (assuming your not using a kernel with it baked in). What happens when you hit reinstall packages, is that it takes the CWM update.zip and flashes it, replacing 2e with CWM. If you don't have that update.zip on your sdcard, then you won't be able to get to CWM.
Yea, have you ever been in rom manager and had to "Flash Clockwork Recovery." Well thats what it is doing. Its putting CWM recovery as an update.zip on your sd. You should be good to go once you do that.
I had the same thing happen to me. I will list what I did step by step as best as I can remember not because all of it is necessarily relevant, just for a frame of reference:
i. Odin 1 clicked to stock
ii. one click root
iii. installed CWM from market
1. Opened CWM, selected install rom from SD card, did not check backup rom or wipe data.
2. Phone rebooted into stock recovery screen, selected reinstall packages, rebooted phone.
3. Repeated step 1 and 2 about 10 times with nothing happening. (Normally, the second time I go through this process, it installs the rom)
4. I tried selecting "Reboot into Recovery" (the manual option) but still nothing happened, it was taking me to the 2e stock recovery.
5. I went back into CWM and selected "All CWM Recoveries" and flashed the older version 2.5.1.1
5. Selected "Reboot into Recovery" again and the CWM recovery window came up and I was able to manually select my ROM from there.
Thanks for Clockwork Mod save
Thank you!!!! Like the previous poster I couldn't get into Clockwork to flash a new ROM altho' I went into recovery at least a dozen times - your fix worked! I downloaded an earlier Clockwork and that instantly took me to the correct screen. A million thanks, I thought I would be stuck in 2.1 for the life of the phone since it wouldn't flash.

Ok, below im going to suggest two different ways to accomplish this.
Before you try this, if you are currently on 2.2 you will run into a 3e security error when in recovery. This process must be done from 2.1 or you must use the 3e security work around if attempting from 2.2. Which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
For me, its easier to use odin and flash back to 2.1 and then load the rom from there than to mess with the whole recovery thing.
How To: Install clockwork recovery.
DOWNLOAD THIS FILE FIRST THEN FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW.
FILE: http://www.mediafire.com/?ve234hbg64ctcu0
1. Go to the download folder and rename clockworkrecovery.zip to update.zip. Mount your phone and drag the update.zip file into the root directory. It is ok to overwrite the update.zip you used before. When it is done copying turn off your phone.
2. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
3. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select.
4. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green menu which is clockwork mod. Do whatever you need to do from here.
Let me say, this is probably an older version of CWM because I pulled it from this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
It should work fine for flashing all 2.2 based roms but I do not have any say for the 2.3 roms as Ive never tried.
2nd way. Use odin to flash a kernel that already has the CWM recovery installed. This is a little more complicated than it sounds as some kernels are not compatible with some roms and you must check that before flashing. If you choose this method, you need to go find a kernel that works and understand how to use Odin before trying.

[Q] How to download clockworkmod and install while offline?

Hello.
ROM manager is unable to download clokworkmod recovery. Maybe because I'm in a "sanctioned country" CUBA and I have a lot of internet restrictions from both Google and my ISP.
My question is: Can I manually download clokworkmod recovery and copy it on the SD card and have ROM manager install it?
If the answer is yes: How? and where do I find Clockworkmod for the captivate?

Thanks.

the one caveat to this ... make sure you have the 2e boot loader when you boot into recovery. The 2e bootloader is the stock bootloader that comes with froyo. 3e will require you to have the update packages signed, and therefore will need to downgrade to 2e before you can switch to CWM.

Wrong.
2e RECOVERY comes from firmware 2.1, which the OP stated he was on. Froyo comes with 3e recovery. Has nothing to do with bootloader, because the bootloaders are the same between eclair and Froyo.

GREAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Working, one more question. I noticed three things:
1 - If I reboot to recovery again it goes into stock recovery (2e). Then I hit reinstall packages only once and ClockWorkMod comes up.
2 - If I delete the update.zip from the sd card CWM will not work.
3 - ROM Manager still says that CWM is not installed therefore is not working OK.
Is all this ok? Should I select: "Install sdcard:update.zip" while in CWM? Should I do something else?

That sounds pretty normal to me. If you are getting into CWM then thats all that really matters. The deal with ROM manager is that it doesnt work very well with our phones. But if you are trying to flash a custom ROM you can still do it without ROM Manager. However, you need to read up about the rom you want to flash because it is a slightly risky process. Its as risky as using ROM Manager and almost Russian roulette if you dont read.
But do not delete the update.zip after you install it. I dont know if it messes with the boot process of recovery mod but I do know its better to have that backup file on your SD card already if you run into a problem later on.
Don't bother with ROM manager. Its close to useless with SGS phones. Make sure your 3 botton combo works and you should be golden. Also making a jig isn't a bad idea also, just incase you do screw up and you get in a softbrick where your keycombos decide to not work.
