[Q] OTA notification when unlocked/rooted - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm on stock 4.2.2 unlocked and rooted but s-on because of 1.54
If an OTA becomes available here in New Zealand, will I still be notified that it's available, even though I can't apply it being unlocked?
Thanks in advance!

You can only update via OTA if you have stock recovery installed and bootloader locked or re-locked. You will also loose root after updating because the update process rewrite over the files needed for root access
I Guess you will have the notification but it will fail if you try to install the update

Yes you will still receive notification of the update but you need to be on a fully stock rom and with stock recovery in order to install it. It is not necessary though to relock bootloader in order to install the OTA.

Cannot OTA update to .4**

Hey guys I have a problem again, I wish to update my device to 4.2.2 via OTA however,
My bootloader is LOCKED and "Allowed: NO" and I am rooted, but when I try to update it says it fails and can't. Is this because I am rooted?..if so can anything be done about it. If I can't mod the phone with un-unlockable bootloader I wanna update it atleast

[Q] Updates Don't Apply on Stock Android ROM?

So I rooted my One and installed a stock Android 4.3 ROM. Occasionally I get a notification for an update which then just takes me right to TWRP recovery. Should I be concerned I'm not getting an update, or just ignore it?

You need a stock recovery and (re)locked bootloader to apply OTA update.

Yes, you still get the update notification, you can download it, but you can't apply it.

You don't need to be relocked for OTA, only RUU.

[Q] Can't Upgrade To 4.3. Goes To Booloader

So I had my HTC One rooted and flashed viper rom. I relocked the bootloader and flashed back to stock rom 1.31.651.2 and everything went smoothly. I went to system updates and it found the 4.3 update and downloaded it. When It gave me the option I clicked install now and the phone rebooted, but into the HTC screen with the development warning and then straight into bootloader and did nothing after that. I rebooted and tried install now again and the same thing happened. What am I doing wrong? Why wont the 4.3 install?
I would suggest getting S-OFF before taking the OTA.
BTW it's NEVER a good idea to take an OTA
I would assume there's already an odex and deodex version of stock 4.3 floating around somewhere. That's usually the first things devs release when it comes to OTAs.

If you are taking an ota on a stock rooted Rom you need to.flash the stock recovery. It will not work if you still have custom recovery on your phone.

Sure it is, I took it knowing I had S-Off and that the OTA wouldnt reenable the security flag. That's all you need to do is be S-Off to ensure you can downgrade if need be.

Awesome. That worked. It wouldn't install the first 2 times, it pretty much just went to installer, did nothing, and then factory reset itself, but the third time was a charm and it installed fine. Thanks so much for your help!! Greatly appreciate it.

Quick Question about rooting

Hi, I just got a HTC ONE and was wondering if I would be able to root my phone, without unlocking the boot loader and keep stock recovery, so I would be able to get OTA updates.
Any help is appreciated.

There's no simple root method for the One. You either have to unlock your bootloader or s-off your phone.

Takes a few steps, but your goal of root with OTA updates is attainable. I'll give you the quick version, assuming you don't need a detailed step-by-step on how to flash and use fastboot commands. The first step is to find the stock recovery file for your phone.
Unlock your bootloader via HTCDev.com (will wipe phone data) and go S-Off (method depends on bootloader version). You will still receive OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader if you're S-Off.
Flash TWRP and install SuperSU from there.
Boot phone, verify rooted.
Flash stock recovery to phone.
You're rooted and will receive OTA updates. The only potential issue is losing root access after an OTA update. Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable could chime in on that point.

Stock OTA update

So I'm rooted, S-Off, and SuperCID, and I get the 4.3 system update notification. I know I need to have the stock recovery, but do I also need to relock the bootloader? And will I lose root access after updating? All help would be appreciated.

Just flash stock recovery and lock bootloader. Accept OTA, after update, flash CWM, re-root.
