So I sent my phone in for repair so I know it's not a hardware issue, and it occurs with a non overclock kernel, so I believe it is my apps that are causing the random sleep death. Before I go about individually removing all my apps, is it possible for a non root app to cause power offs?

What makes you think you don't have the random shutdown issue so many of us (me included) have had with this phone? I had to exchange mine twice before I got one that didn't shutdown.
possibly
it might be a few reasons
check if you have power save in settings>display that was causing the problem for me, and if you have set CPU set the screen off profile to a higher CPU
When I first got this phone it shut down all the time. Last year. Now nothing. In a long time.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, and its getting very frustrating. Last night my N7 shut down from low battery, after plugging in, it still wouldn't start up. I got it going again holding firm the power and volume button, but now it's constantly either freezing during use, slightly after startup or not turning on at all after gong to sleep.
I factory reset and that seems to have fixed the lockup issue but it's still getting stuck in deep sleep. The only thing I can guess is that it's the magnet feature in my case that is causing it. I've now had the case off for about an hour and had no lockups.
I've never felt the need to root this thing but I'm thinking of routing and fling to a custom 4.1.2 to see if this fixed it.
Has anyone heard of or had this issue before?

More: its got nothing to do with the case, I've had multiple lockups over the past hour and now a isn't even get past the lock screen without it locking up. Only setting I changed was killing the auto brightness.
No one else is having issues like this?

I have selected to never keep WiFi on during sleep yet now the tablet continues to run the WiFi as you can see in the pictures. This has forced me to use airplane mode when I am on the go because otherwise the tablet just keeps WiFi on and burns the battery extremely quick. This has been a problem since I updated to 4.2.1. I am not rooted completely stock. A solution would be great because this sucks right now. I have tried clearing the cache in recovery but that didn't solve the problem.
I'm running the latest Paranoidandroid ROM and thought that was the problem. I can't yet post to that developer forum so I was just waiting for the next beta.
I guess it's a problem with 4.2.1 then.

If you don't find a solution you may want to try DataEasyPro from the market. It kills both 3g and wifi as soon as the screen is off and then runs a user defined schedule to turn on 3g or wifi every now and the for a few seconds to keep you upto date with your social world. Works great. There is even a widget so you can turn off the schedule when you are downloading or updating from the play store.

I think it is a 4.2.1 problem. Its hard to say how wide spread it is though because I have only seen a handful of posts about this issue though. To me, this issue is unacceptable. I should not have to enable/disable airplane mode to conserve battery. Especially when the previous version of android prior to the 4.2.1 update handled WiFi sleep settings without a problem. Hopefully a fix will be here soon. My tablet used to have superb battery life without me constantly monitoring it. Now I feel like I have to keep double checking that I remember to use airplane mode so that I don't go to use the tablet and find a nearly depleted battery.

I recommend automate it, I have a couple of rules set to turn WiFi of with the screen (with a 5min delay), then turn Wi-Fi back on when the screen turns on. There's plenty of other settings and rules to play with as well.

In had the same issue. I found Google maps to be the culprit.
It defaulted back to location reporting.
Check Google now sync, maps and currents.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
It's not google maps itself, it's the android location service. It's always collecting data even if your phone or tabscreen isn't on. This is pretty anoying since google only let you choose between agreeing to run the service in the background or not using it at all. Stupid! How about collecting data only when the device is in use?
Same here. There is a bug report on Google about it.

Ah this is interesting; as last night my battery was on 53% and I am sure I charged it fully previously...... Am on stock too but have rooted.
Might just switch the tablet off all the time for the time being.
I'm on stock rooted 4.2.1 and mine is fine. Strange.

WiFi turns off here also, which means its working as intended, what is strange is is it not working for some people, I'm also on stock rooted 4.2.1.
what is the OP using? Are there any apps installed/running on the OPs device that can keep the WiFi alive?

I highly recommend using an app called Better Battery Stats. You can find the free version here on XDA. It'll tell you if there is an app causing a wakelock. I used it to troubleshoot my Rezound and I'm getting a solid 4-5 hours of screen on time with the extended battery on that because it helped me lock down the apps that were killing my battery.

Hmmm. Just checked PA beta 7 and it's doing it too. Wifi on always.
A custom kernel would probably fix that.

I was having the wifi on issue as well. Just bought my N7, stock 4.2.1 and not rooted. I followed the tip in point four of this post, which details a simple set up using Tasker, where the unit turns the wifi on and off after the screen turns on or off respectively. The reason for the 10 second delay as is detailed in the link, is to allow for the turning on of your N7 to check the time or other reasons, and then quickly turn it off without the wifi on task being activated.
the screenshot below shows my wifi being stuck on while in sleep mode, even with it set to be never on during sleep in the settings, and the change in behavior once the 2 Tasker profiles we set up.
Cheers
Those of you having issues, have you tried the "only when plugged in" setting? Not sure if it would really matter but that's what I use and mine turns on and off just fine.

Testing that now. Turned off Tasker, and set wifi to the "only when plugged in" setting. It's only been about 30 minutes, but so far it looks like it's behaving the same as before, as in keeping wifi on while in sleep. I'll Let it sleep for a few hours and see what the chart shows.
Cheers
EDIT: So I let my N7 sit for about an hour after switching the above mentioned settings, and you can see in the screenshot below that the wifi is staying on while the unit is not awake. I've set my Tasker profiles to control the wifi once again.
I know it may be fixed by a factory reset, but frankly I'm more than happy with the way Tasker handles the issue.
Cheers
so 6 months later, I am still getting this problem. However it seems only to be with the last update. The tasker method seems to be working well though.

I'm not 100% certain with what you've given here.
1) does it do this from an overnight stage?
2) how long is it asleep before this happens?
3) what ROM are you on?
It sounds like your T is experiencing sleep of death.

It's running ICS firmware-7.0.A.3.195
Not yet rooted,
Not yet flashed,
Not any special kernel,
Im not experiencing this problem due to over night usage.... It's working perfectly for 2 hrs or 3hrs or 4 hrs also but this last time I locked t screen after 5minutes of net usage... It was not responding after two minutes! After reboot its working fine....so far I have rebooted 4 times bcoz of screen not responding.

I have the same problem and I'm thinking of sending it back to the customer service. It' s very annoying, it happens randomly and i'm forced to do a soft reboot.. Has anyone have a solution or should I send it?
Try repairing it with Pc companion. If the problems still occurs than I would send it back.

Has anyone had any power button issues? Or heard of anything similar.
Suddenly found that the power button was completely unresponsive, in that it wouldn't wake the sleeping device, fortunately I'd enabled volume buttons to wake, once device was awake, power button still did nothing, so I couldn't get to access reboot menu, so installed Franco's reboot application, rebooted, and it's working absolutely fine again? As if nothing was ever wrong, makes me suspect a software rather than hardware related problem.
Strange? Familiar? Can anyone relate?
I've had many previous, non nexus devices which suffered from dead power button, but nothing of late, plus the device is only weeks old.
I'm running latest Chroma build (as per sig) so asop.

Not exactly experiencing the same problem, but I've been having this odd power-button issue since today. If I leave my phone locked/screen off for about 5 minutes, it does not respond to a press of the power button. The weird thing is, it does respond after exactly 3 presses, every time. It's a non-issue when Smart Unlock is engaged on my home wifi-network. On 5.0.1. Chroma, haven't updated it in a week or two.

Sounds like a different issue.
Mine was a complete one of, switch made me suspect software asop issue.

Happened again, dead power button, woke by volume buttons, reboot, works fine again.
So this isn't intermittent, in that when it fails it won't work again until restart, which says to me software.
I'm now using this thread as log. To see if RMA necessary.

Do you have a screen protector covering the sensor? If so that's probably the issue, disable ambient display and see if you can reproduce the problem.

No screen cover, just a ringke slim cover. But I don't think that covers the sensors.

actually i encountered this issue even after a reboot...
but most of the time it would go away.. i really wonder why is this so.. my power button is confirm working fine because it allows me to do a force reboot (by holding on to the powerbutton for like 5-7 secs).
using 31/3 chroma.. didnt experience this from stock or terminus rom..
have you all tried a clean install?

I would get this issue on Chroma if I had enabled the option Display--Ambient Display--Overwrite Value.
See if thats enabled, and if so, try with it disabled for awhile.

I was clean install on 5.1 but not since, although did import apps and data from TB not that it should impact it at all. Only ever run Chroma, jumped straight to it after initial unlock.
Fortunately volume keys always wake - so far.
Let me know how you get on - in this thread.
If I find it continues to happen then I'll consider clean install and then maybe even a replacement device.
Everything was fine after last reboot.
Immediately after plug in into charger, the power button stop working. First time experiencing this. Able to try this to guys?
Edit: I toggled 2 things.. Enabled / disabled ambient display overwrite defaults and screen on when plug / unplug charger..
