... what the hell is a nano-SIM? Is this some advanced Apple technology?
How did I manage to read over ten reviews of the this phone on major tech sites and not one mentioned that it takes a special SIM card? So, here I sit with a new phone and no way to use it.
The phone sure looks pretty in the box.
I guess I'm still using the HTC One and Lumia 1020 for a while. (Please no one bid on my HTC One on eBay for a few days.)

I came from an HTC One and purchased a sim cutting tool and micro/normal sim plastic adapter. The cut sim works fine in any phone using adapters. Total cost was under $10.
My T-Mobile version came with a TMO nano sim
You can go to your carriers store or even call them and they'll send out a Sim for your phone. With att its no charge.

I'm not sure which version you bought, but my Verizon dev edition came with the nano-SIM already installed. You may want to pop the SIM tray out and check.

I cut mine with scissor and filed it down with a nail filer. Works perfect
Just cut off the surrounding plastic around the chip Of course make sure you have that little notch though. That's what I did
Here's a handy template if you want to try cutting the sim down yourself: http://www.airportal.de/nanosim/
Both AT&T and T-Mobile retail stores will transfer you over to a nano sim without any charge. It takes about five minutes to do. With AT&T, they just gave me a card and I went home and called customer service. Ten minutes from start to finish once on the line. She verified everything with me and stayed on the line until test texts and phone calls were made.

Both of my Dev edition Moto Xs came with nano SIMs installed. Still, ended up cutting down the micro SIMs from my Dev edition S4s. The S4 Developer editions didn't come with cards. Had pulled those cards from couple of old GNexs and at that time just stuck them in the S4s and fired them up. Didn't want to risk messing up the unlimited accounts those numbers have. So, with nano-to-micro adapters the S4s and Moto Xs can be SIM swapped at will with affect on the unlimited status of the lines.

as others have said. just cut it down with scissors. the front side(notch), cut to the metal and cut notch . sides. cut to the metal. back side.... you are going to cut through 3/32" of the metal. you can cut everything i touch big and go from there.
unless you cut it too small... you cant really screw it up. i have cut several of them now and all of them work great.
I got the Dev edition which is why there was no SIM. I went to my AT&T store the next day and got a nano-SIM for free. It was just a bit of a bummer for the unboxing.

I bought the 32 GB nexus 5 from Google received it in 3 business days. Little did I know how hard it would be to get a Sim card from Sprint. To make a long story short there is a gentlemen selling them in eBay. I didn't think to look there until I called every sprint store and tried calling sprint 3 times (hoping to a different answer). Just thought I'd let everyone know this is a possibility if you are like me and stuck with out a Sim card.

If you ever in that situation again, Full sized sims cards can be chopped down to the size of a microsim and work perfectly fine.
Just cut it to size

If they are full size cards, they are really easy to cut to size for the N5. Many cell phone stores will do this either for free or for a small nominal fee. You can also try to do it yourself, if you are really careful. Or you can buy a micro SIM cutting tool for a few dollars.
Of course, if all you can get are nano SIMs, then you need to get an adapter instead. Again, shouldn't cost more than a few dollars.

same thing with me got the 32gb nexus 5 from the play store but I got a sim card ordered on nov 6th through chat but it still hasn't shipped yet so then I asked again on chat today when its gonna be shipped and was told it could be 10 days. even tried a few sprint stores around me and none of them have one.
Tell them you need a SIM card for a HTC One or S4 and don't show them the Nexus 5 until they bring it out. For some reason a lot of them are under the impression that the Nexus 5 uses some kind of magical SIM card and will just tell you they don't have it.
Thankfully I had a sim from my Htc One. BUT I since switched to tmobile after being on my moms sprint plan for about 4 years. It was a great decision to switch.
I have one
I ordered my N5 through Amazon to use on AT&T. I have the Sprint SIM card that came with it. I'm not using it, PM me if you any of you want it. I'm in NY to give you an idea of how fast it will get to you. I can send it out tomorrow.
I recall reading around(cant find source) that roughly 15,000 Sprint sim cards just went up and missing. They dont know if there were stolen or just misplaced. I will try to dig up some source for you all soon.
i called customer care and was told they would be happy to send me one but they were back ordered. it took me 4 stores but i was able to get one a sprint store just outside of boston. they had two. actually pulled out a baggie that said nexus 5 on it. thank god. hoping my phone will be in next week.

No they absolutely do not. Just made an Israelite journey out of several stores and they don't have any. Most are even sold out or out of stock of the 16GB model they carry which comes with a Sprint SIM.
Even tried begging if they could give or sell me one from any busted/broken/RMA'd Sprint phones that use micro SIM (S4, HTC One etc), but no dice.

Nano or micro SIMs? Everyone i went to had a boat load of nano SIMs but no micro SIMs.
Just pickup a nano to micro converter from Best Buy its about $10.00 and works like a charm
After being told by the local stores that I could not have any of their SIM cards, I hopped online with Sprint World Wide Chat last Friday, 15 NOV. They told me the cards were back ordered, but they would be happy to order one for me and ship it when it comes in at no charge. I accepted their offer and got a ship notice on Tuesday. The card arrived yesterday. I guess my point is that "back ordered" does not necessarily mean an indefinite wait. My N5 shipped last night and I should have it in my hands Monday morning, so I'm a happy camper right now.

Very few MVNOs like Straight Talk offer official nano SIMs for sale. You (or someone else) make them by cutting down a larger SIM, and that can be imperfect. Officially nano SIMs are also slightly thinner than other SIM sizes, so you have to carefully sand them down although many don't do that and find things work OK. I purchased a NET10 nano SIM from a reseller and have had similar problems although sometimes a reboot fixes it and sometimes a single reinsert of the SIM has fixed the problem (a couple times it's taken several tries). Until I run the phone using an official nano SIM I'm reluctant to say my phone has a problem. Given the new ATT family plan pricing & per line $100 incentive, we'll probably be moving there sooner than I was planning, and ATT can supply a real nano SIM.

Interesting... Was this a retail kit from Walmart? On their website, they only offer micro and full size. I even sent them an email asking if they could provide a nano SIM and got the answer back - no. They said that what you see on the website is all that is available. Of course they aren't known for the customer service expertise. If the activation kit came off ebay or from some 3rd party, they may have pre-cut it for you.

I activated my wife's Moto x with a nano SIM out of the kit just fine. Stupid question is did you set the apn settings? Maybe the SIM went bad. My kit was all messed up, I got two AT&T nano Sims and two tmo regular/micro Sims.

Funny thing is when I called straight talk they said was a T-Mobile Sim. So basically they don't even know what the have. It was clearly blue and in the attached slot of the kit.
That's no lie, they are completely clueless on what they sell. I told them of the packaging mistake and all they would do is sell me another card.

I am going to try it when I get off work today. I also have a nano sim so I will try the cut first
Cutting it down is easy. I just cut a micro to a nano the other night for the moto x 2nd gen. No issues at all.
I cut my Sprint one with a scissor. It's really simple. It's in my N5 right now with an adapter.

your local Best Buy should have cutters as well. If you are nice they will cut it and not charge you.
has anyone gotten their verizon sims to work on the N6 yet?
Not to activate them but they work if they are already activated.
Nano SIM's are thinner than Micro SIM's just an FYI-
To activate a new SIM call the number for activation and give them your old phone imei. Use a micro to nano adapter and plug it in. Then when it's active pop it in to the n6.

Just call Verizon, tell them you bought an m8 and need a nano SIM. You will need the adapter to put it in your s3 and activate it. Then just switch it over to n6.

I bought the $7 tool off Amazon that includes adapters and everything else. Pulled the SIM from my S4, cut it, and activated in my N6 without any issues. I end up with a $7 paperweight after this.... but it could be useful for anyone that comes into the shop doing something similar or if any of the other techs would upgrade to a new iPhone or something.
There's really no need to cut your SIM card when you can just call and request a nano SIM for free.

Ditto. From the time I printed out the template to the time I finished cutting it was maybe 5 minutes, tops. Then I was able to seamlessly transfer my existing T-Mo prepaid $30/mo and current phone number from my N4 to my N6.
I ended up cutting my sim even tho I had a nano. I just figured the less interaction I had with Verizon the better
Cut mine with ATT messed it up now I don't have a phone. I'll be at AT&T asap hope they r open on blackfriday
Hello all. Though we know the N6 works on VZW and units are beginning to ship out, I am reading reports (android police)VZW may not activate new nano Sim cards for active subscribers because it wasn't bought from VZW.
Specifically, a phone purchased directly from Motorola is presenting issues.
As more Motorola units ship, has anyone had a problem? My current phone uses a micro Sim. Sure, I could cut it but am afraid I might screw it up.
Please share your experiences.

The new one needs to be a 4ff nano SIM and it does not work because it needs to be activated and provisioned on your account. You call the number and give them your old phone imei and they activate the SIM. Then place it in the n6.

When I received it, I used it as a template to cut down my wife's micro sim to a nano sim. It was easier that way.
My super duper cutter arrives today. When my phone arrives and if i screw up I can always get a new micro Sim and recut it instead of going through the VZW crap of trying to get a nano. The store is right down the street from me so not an issue.

I just called. They are shipping one out. They asked me what kind of phone and I said iPhone 6. Should be no problem right?

So I went to Verizon today to try and activate it and they told me that I needed to have a phone that used a nano sim to activate it, which means droid ultra, droid maxx, droid turbo, and the newest droid razr. No iPhone nano sims will work in it from what this rep told me. I have a friend with a droid ultra, so I'm gonna take him up to verizon and have them activate my sim in his phone and reboot it to fix the mm issues with my sim in it, and then move the sim over to the N6.
Big red is definitely not making this easy for us.

There is another thread on here as well as Droid Life saying it will work. I have an adapter so I can put it into my current Micro SD HTC one phone with adapter, activate it and then use the nano SIM in Nexus 6 according to the thread.
Edit::: I found out the iPhone 6 does not have NFC so Verizon is sending me a nano for the HTC m8 which will work. So, you are correct that technically an iPhone 6 won't work totally because of the NFC. Thanks for pointing that out!

All Sims are the same. Don't worry about it
I went into a Verizon retail location today (Village At Orange - 1500 E Village Way, Ste 2205 Orange, CA 92865) and they were worthless.
I explained to the representative what I needed and they told me they couldn't do it unless I activated it in store. I explained that would be a pain, but that I did have an adapter and was willing if need be. They said fine.
The representative then went over to a table with me and said that my device (Note 3) was not a nano sim device. I explained again that I had an adapter and he said there was nothing he could do. I asked if he could call someone and he told me he wouldn't. I then asked for the manager's card.
On my way home I called Verizon and they're sending a card out. It'll get here Monday. If my phone beats the sim I'll just trim my current one down. I'm disgusted at the service I received at the store. The representative acted like he couldn't care less. Really, really frustrating.
I need to know how to coach them to activate. My current device is a galaxy nexus and I don't have a phone that supports the nano sim. I know the manager he will give me a sim but how do I get the aim activated instead of this one?

good luck. really need a phone that has nano sim or try to use nano and an adapter in your nexus but i think verizon knows what sim fits what so it might not allow that
Just got off the phone with verizon and I was told there are several types of nano sims... I told him it was the same type as the HTC One M8 (I have seen several people mention this while lurking) and he had it mailed out. Hoping it beats my device here so I don't have to go into a store. I did tell them it was a Nexus 6 and I didn't get any crap.
Fingers Crossed!
I'd suggest using the search function and seeing what you come up with

I've done this twice in store. They just have to find a phone that accepts a Nano Sim and activate it. First time was a Sony, second time an iPhone. No problems.

do you currently have a phone on a line with verizon? if so it wont work. the nexus imei isnt registered in vzw network
Go to a corporate store, hand them your nexus and tell them you needed a Sim only activation. They did mine in ten minutes.

Yes I do. It is my understanding that the IMEI roadblock was getting the sim not activating it. I saw people reporting that once they had a sim everything worked fine.

The guy on the phone said if my sim didn't show up fast enough I could do this. I prefer to avoid going into a store when possible.
Just pop in a sim and it works.

I can confirm this ---- I had a currently active Note 3, bought a sim cutter from Amazon for 8 bucks, cut the sim from my Note 3 down to nano size. Then, popped in the nano sim to my Nexus that had not been powered on yet. Powered the N6 on, and within about a minute my phone was active. If it doesn't work on first power-up, do a power cycle and you should be good to go.
