[Q] Warranty when buying Z1 in another country? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings!
I couldn't wait for the C6906 and I was too impatient, so I ordered a C6903 which should fill all my T-mobile needs anyhow. I don't know why I didn't even think of this, but will I have a warranty on this? I ordered it from Hong Kong (I believe) and I am in the United States. The seller says they offer a one year warranty, but what about Sony? I highly doubt any electronics reseller would be able to repair anything intricate on a device like this, so am I out of luck on Sony's warranty? I tried looking up their international warranty and the closest I could find was another forum post stating that the device has to be sent back to Hong Kong if it needs repair.
I haven't even gotten the phone yet, so I don't want to plan for the worst per se, but I am concerned nonetheless. Do any of you have experience buying these "imported" versions with Sony?
Thanks so much!

Imported phones won't have warranty in your country...
Warranty belongs to nation were phone was originally launched.

Wow, that is very unfortunate. I think I will cancel my order and wait for the phone to come to the US.

Collin check the sony store in us they have it on pre order already. Or tmobile will be getting the z1 soon as well as they are releasing the c6906 in Canada today (should be)

Yeah I saw that, but I think it's the HSPA+ model (C6902) which makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. I got excited when I saw the preorder today and was hoping it was the C6906, but no dice. I now worry that it will be the same as the Z - the LTE version will be a T-mobile exclusive in the US. That's fine because I have T-mobile, but I always prefer an unbranded non-carrier phone of course
Anyway, thanks! I think I'll send an email to Sony to ask about the warranty.
-Collin-

Well, if I trust the chat representative (which we know, are always 100% accurate ) then it appears the phone has an international warranty.
Chris Tompkins: Hi Collin, thanks for choosing Sony Xperia™ Chat Support. My name is Chris. Would you please provide me with your full name and email address?
Collin: Collin xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Collin: please do not sign me up to receive emails, though
Chris Tompkins: Thank you. What is the model of your device and your service provider?
Collin: I purchased the C6903
Collin: unlocked
Chris Tompkins: As I see in my system the device have a warranty but keep in ind the phone repair doesn't have an estimate time for repair, since the service ccenter will need to request the parts to fix it.
Collin: Okay, there's nothing wrong with the phone and I do not need warranty service right now. My question is just whether or not the phone has an international warranty since I ordered it from Hong Kong, but I live in the United States.
Chris Tompkins: Have I answered all of your questions today or is there anything else I can help you with?
Collin: can you confirm that the phone has an international warranty?
Chris Tompkins: The phone have a warranty as long is not physical, water or system tamper damage. The service facility can fix the phone under warranty it doesn't matter from where it came from.
Collin: okay that answers my question, thank you for your time.

Hey this may be a solution: get insurance on the phone.
Here in the UK phone insurance is cheapest through your bank, in my case Amex is insuring all my portable electronics for a modest sum.
If it breaks it's covered - so no need to worry about the warranty.
Be sure to check the fine print of your policy or even call the company to ask if you'd be covered.
If you have an expensive phone like this insurance is a good bet anyway...

That's a great idea, actually. Here in the States, the big one is "Square Trade" I think. I used PayPal to buy the phone - should have used my Amex!

Wel im surprised, I ordered mine from Amazon instead and they give me til november to return it If i dont like it, with 0 penalties like 20% restocking fee from gsmnation, so far the best deal I got, since shipping for 1 day since I got prime cost me 3.99, cant beat that for 1 day shipping. Im impressed so far, the only issue is with of course spotty network, since in the US I get LTE in some areas, yet not as fast as any LTE phones I had before.

I emailed Sony asking if i had warranty if i buy a phone from ebay from an international seller and this is the response I got back...
Dear
Thank you for contacting Sony Xperia™ Online Support.
We apologize for the delay of our response. In regards to your inquiry, you have a 1 year warranty, however, please keep in mind that any impact or water damage as well as software alteration may void the 1 year repair warranty of your phone, the time frame for the repair is about 14 business days for US and Canadian models and indefinite time for international models, and in case the phone is out of warranty there is a cost.
As part of Sony Mobile's commitment to excellent customer service, we offer a wide variety of mobile products to suit your lifestyle. If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit [sony website] or call us at 1-866-766-9374.
Kind Regards,

So much for the waterproof warranty. They wrote you a very slick e-mail. They didn't even write what the z1 user manual says - "... if water is detected behind the flaps ... the warranty is voided ... "
What if water gets in through the speaker or through the audio jack?

They said that the serial # and IEMI # are not supported by them. I let them know that is was bought in the US and it works on T-mobile services. I am pissed bc the guys at popular electronics said it would be covered here in the US. Also the phone is a world phone so it should be covered here.
That's strange....its a HTC phone...HTC repair in the USA probably want replace the phone unless its the Verizon version....maybe the HTC overseas will cover it since that's the real market the phone was meant to be sold in.

I have the S710E model and yes i did call popular electronics. They first told me it would be covered even before i bought the phone i called HTC and asked if it would be covered and they said yes so did popular electronics. But when i called htc back with my IEMI # they said it is not supported in there system . Then popular electronics change there story by saying it might be covered and they don't really know anymore bunch of bull****. I guess i will have to call HTC Europe if i have problems. What number would i call if i have the S710E model.
They shouldn't have sold you a European device in the first place.
Tell them you wish to have it replaced by an American one.
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to sell a European device in America, so if they refuse your offer, warn them that you will take legal steps if necessary.
It's a high end smartphone for crying out loud, after-sales should be the least bit of your worries.

If you're using the phone on Tmobile US the only phone you can use is the international version which is model number s710e. You will not find a US version of the phone. The US sellers are selling phones they imported from overseas.

This has been the case for well over a decade. To my knowledge, only Nokia and SE have given warranty support for their grey-market phones and only to certain ones. If a buyer was Really interested in a warranty for their grey-market phones, then they should've purchased one through squaretrade.

[Q] Anyone using (US) Dev Edition or (US) 32 GB Unlocked outside the US?

Hey there,
I want to understand the process of claiming the warranty of a US HTC One outside of the US. Perhaps, someone has done it? I'm from India and will be going to Canada soon. I faintly remember something about paying $15 and being able to claim the warranty. The camera issue is forcing me to consider this as the only option!
For what it's worth, I called up the HTC people in India and they're saying that they won't honour the warranty; but I think if I can get an email from HTC USA asking them to honour my claim they'll cave.
Any suggestions?

Hello,
From what I understand, buying any sort of device from another country will generally mean you will not have a warranty unless the product provides an international warranty, otherwise, i believe that international laws may prevent you from using a warranty from your current country.
For what it is worth you could contact the HTC people in the USA and attempt to see what they say. I guess it would be fair for them to replace it for you, but I'm not completely sure about the international laws relating to the subject.
Overall, just try to contact the HTC people in the USA and see what they say. Chances are, their say will be final.
Good Luck

Bootloader is locked, Rogers C6906 , but network is unlockable if you purchase code. if you want an unlockable bootloader, 100% avoid sim-locked phone, just buy a sim free phone.

Well, Google "unlock cell", unveils return tons of option, you will need to do research which one is reliable tho, some people go on ebay and it is cheaper at your own risk.

Can you please try this to see if the bootloader is unlockable or not ? Thanks !
First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

Unfortunately no Sony Store in the Toronto area has any unlocked phones in stock, or if they did they are hoarding them
Supposedly the stores will be getting their unlocked phones on Friday and stores are doing pre-orders now. This whole "launch" is pretty discouraging - as it seems like there are not that many phones available - my local store is only getting 4 black phones - I'm number 5 so won't be getting one until the end of October - which is when the next shipment is expected. I wasn't even told there was a pre-order system setup - even when I visited the store beforehand trying to get a glimpse of a display model. There wasn't any then, but there is one now - so my trip wasn't a total waste of time. Finally got a chance to see a working model.
Locked phones are available but seem to be selling slower - either that or they got more stock. Maybe Sony Canada didn't anticipate there would be demand for off-contract phones?
If anybody knows of any Toronto/GTA locations that still have open pre-orders I would like to know. A friend just picked up a Rogers locked one today.

I would advise against getting a Bell model - unless you're getting a discount. If you're paying the full price that Bell is asking for ($699 + tax), you might as well get the factory unlocked version directly from Sony for the same price. Rogers has the purple colour locked down if that's your preference, so only Black or White available from other sources.

Thing is, I've gotten pretty desperate. I contacted Bell and in order to be able to use the phone in the US, the carrier does need to unlock it. That's an added fee of 60 dollars from Bell. I also contacted a Sony store in Markham, ON and they said that the earliest I can get an unlocked one from them would be a month or so from now, or until their next shipment.

Just buy direct from Sony man - no need to pay extra for carrier unlock, and no carrier bloatware. Bell is selling it a $699, then you pay $60 to unlock, then there's the 13% Tax - that's about $860.
If you can't wait that long, see if you can get it from Rogers since they are selling it for $599 off-contract. At least you save a bit.
I myself will be getting it from my provider because hardware upgrade - picking one up tonight.

Alright - just got back home after fighting rush hour traffic from Yorkdale Mall.
This whole experience has seriously cast doubts as to whether I will ever purchase another new Sony phone again.
I have been given so much misinformation both over the phone and in person its getting ridiculous. It seems that they really want you to be physically at the store so that they can upsell you on other items - I was told over the phone that the box doesn't contain headphones, so that I should go there and pick out one or maybe even a bluetooth headset. All this when I just simply asked about the pre-order status.
The latest I have heard was that all stores are taking pre-orders and the warehouse will be shipping out units to the stores as they are placed. I had one salesperson tell me over the phone that the black unit was heavily back ordered (negative inventory), while the white was still available - only to get to the store and told that it doesn't matter - they're both backordered. They can't even guess at when I would be getting a phone. I was also told that the 18th was the official launch date and they weren't allowed to release the phones, which coincides with other info from this thread. The problem is that I was also told today that the Upper Canada Mall location had inventory since yesterday and they just sold the last one today!!! WTF? I've been told that I would get one next week, end of Oct. or even next month - this has all been extremely frustrating.
I really wish they would just allow you to pre-order online and have it shipped to the store like a normal retailer would.
AhsanU - if you want to put me in contact with your friend I can let them know when I receive my phones (2 on pre order), or ask them to get to the closest Sony store and just put down a deposit and hope for the best. Bell and Rogers are notorious for overcharging for everything, whereas Telus is a bit better, but they will all take advantage you given the chance. The unlocking fee is only supposed to be $50 but I'm not sure if they included the tax already. Why do they insist on locking the phones when you're either buying the phone outright or signing a contract that stipulates financial penalties when breaking said contract. In Asia, none of the phones are locked and companies actually compete with each other. I just hope there is a special place in hell for all these telecommunication executives...

Sony canada rep told me unlocking Rogers phone voids warranty

I was going to buy another bell Z1 for my gf but apparently bell does not allow Sony store to sell the phone without activating it.
so i was going to buy rogers Z1 and unlock it but they told me unlocking rogers phone will void warranty.
basically this is what they are saying. Rogers Z1 is 100CAD cheaper than unlocked Z1(699+tax), meaning i am loaning (yes he said it! WTH i am paying the full price) the device from rogers even if i do pay the full price rogers ask for no commitment device price.
I argued with them that what if I go to Sony service center directly when i need warranty, and they said Sony mobile dept won't be able to perform any service if it's carrier locked phone because Sony sold all the rights to service providers that i have to go through the provider warranty to get it figured out, then they can send it to Sony to fix it.....
they also said if i unlock the phone, they will not accept it for return or exchange even if it's bad unit in brand new condition.(exchange policy is usually 30min talk time or 15 days, whichever is earlier)
are these guys trying to sell me an unlocked Z1 which cost 100 bucks more? or is it true that they are saying?
ps. when i went to samsung service center about 6 months ago with broken LCD on s4, they didn't even asked which provider i am with, but just asked for the proof of purchase. I guess if everything that they said is true then Sony canada is not taking responsibility for their phone?!!!!
I am so glad i didn't buy C6903 originated from HK because it looks like there's no way in hell sony canada will provide coverage for it.
Unlocking the bootloader cos the warranty. But you are talking about aim unlocking (I think) that may void any carrier warranty but (afaik) will not void any warranty from Sony

If you, by any chance, already had your phone sent for warranty, can share your experience here and whether your phone was accepted for repairing?

I think I'll try to root. Not sure if repair centers are experienced enough to know about knox counter. I can always just flash the stock rom and just ignore the 0x1. I'll see what others say.
EUROPE has the best warranties, no matter what electronic item you buy. USA has the worst, only 1 year, and you have to fight hard sometimes to get warranty honored. I have a N910C and I am in USA atm, I'm SURE this phone is NOT covered by warranty here because it is not an American model. Similar thing happened to my galaxy S3 i9300, I asked Samsung for a screen replacement, and I was willing to pay, but then they refused because it is an international model.
So if you are in Europe, just root away!

Sometimes that does matter. I bought a Nokia lumia 1520 and even with proof of purchase they wouldn't cover it because it was a 1520 that wasn't made for the European market. I'd have to send it in to that market to get it fixed. I understand completely. But if it were a European device purchased in Europe, they'd have to fix it. So yes, you can root and have it under warranty unless you actually change the software or hardware to a point that it burns out the phone... Besides that, you're pretty much golden.
I haven't had a need to send in my phone yet, but I did report an issue(pocket wake/pocket dialing because of home button wake) that I as a user could only fix by rooting (I don't plan on rooting) and the service rep told me they'd "reset" the phone once(flash stock firmware, and set counter to 0)
Sony's service really surprised me once.
I had dropped a flashlight right on my e-reader's screen causing a few pixels to rupture, and they fixed it for free even though that kind of damage could only come from mishandling.
Thanks!!! I already rooted my Note 4!!! So good to be back here after the awesome Note II development! And yes, I live in Europe and my phone is from here!
Any news for Germany carriers. .I want to root my note 4 and i am not sure for warranty. .
Regarding Italy I don't have firsthand experience (and knock on wood I won't have to), but from what I'm reading on forums they don't honor the warranty if knox 0x1.

The service center manger he sent his phone to was very high on weed
The easiest way would be to use the search function and get all information, that you need.
Why Samsung KNOX trigger bothers us - and should not!
The link redirects you to an older post of mine, where I explain, what KNOX really does and in which way it is important to us.
The shortcut to my answer is, you can give a sh** about Knox. Knox is only interesting for enterprise purposes.
in Mexico, carrier telcel, rooting does not void warranty, they even accept your device without proof of purchase, if it was sold by them
Note 4 housing
Hey guys
Have anyone gone back to try to replace the housing of the phone?
It s a bit scratched up, I understand I would need to pay for it. That is fine. But to do so would warranty or Knox 0x1 come into play and have them rejecting me?
Thank you
They MUST repair your phone here in Holland. Even if it is rooted and flashed with other firmware
i wrote to one of the certified repair centers in my town (Kaunas, Lithuania. Europe) . Asking specificly if i loose the warranty fully or retain any of it (like if it's a software failure i have to pay but if it's hardware i can get off) and they replied that they count the warranty voided under any circumstances if the knox is tripped.
i'll try to write to the samsung reps, see what their stand on this is. maby if i tripped knox and carried the phone to the service they would take it as long as i don't run in screaming that my knox is 0x1......

I wonder if it's the same in Belgium.
In the UK, no dice.
I contacted the carphone warehouse after my wifi refused to connect and when it did connect, would drop out within a few minutes. the list of wifi networks would just show disabled.
I took it to the carphone warehouse in newcastle, was able to reproduce the problem with their in store wifi.. I booked it in for repair. They sent it off for repair I think since it took 10 days.
When I went back, He told me that the device had been rooted in the past, gave me the phone back with "user error" on the receipt. So if you trip the warranty knox counter, they wont touch it.
Phone sold for spares.
