%0 battery issue - phone keeps shutting off - Motorola Atrix HD

When using the phone the battery indicator immediately drops from whatever it was at down to %0 and the phone shuts off.
When I start the phone up into recovery (Philz) it still shows the original battery percentage that was reported before the phone shut off. I rebooted the phone back up into system several times and sometimes I am able to use it for a minute or two and then it will repeat all over again: the battery drops back to %0 and the phone reboots, other times it says %0 immediately after bootup and shuts off right away.
It's intermittent, so sometimes I can go for a week or two if I'm lucky without it happening, but sometimes I can only go a few hours without being interrupted by the shutdowns. The only thing that seems to have helped me is charging my phone a little bit more and then it stops for a while, but I don't always have a charger with me so I would like to get this issue resolved if possible.
I know my battery is charged. I was able to sit there flashing my phone over and over trying to fix the issue and the phone kept working 45 minutes and even an hour later. Sometimes reflashing my ROM after wiping system, cache, etc. seems to fix the issue, other times it doesn't work.
I have done the EB40 mod to my phone, but I haven't had any issues with it. It's possible that this problem could be related to that as well, but I'm fairly confident that my battery is in good condition.
This issue has been occurring for quite a while and I have done full wipes and reflashed several times with multiple different ROMs and kernels to see if the issue was related to a certain ROM or kernel. All of the ROMs I have tried were very heavily based on CyanogenMod I believe, so if it turns out to be software rather than hardware then that seems to be the common link.
I need my phone for my job so this is something I really need to get sorted out. I have to use my phone for debugging and testing applications.
I have searched all over the web but no one I have found in any forum was having quite the same issue as me.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue? A suitable workaround if no other solution could be found would be somehow preventing the phone from rebooting when the battery reads %0 if that's at all possible.
Here's a screenshot of my battery history from today when this happened. Notice how the battery level goes right back to where it was after rebooting.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6RpWzK5OKf4SFp1TWd1aUJ4ZlU/edit?usp=drive_web
Some additional info:
My battery is still at %52 as I type this and it's still running without a problem. Battery life is great in the CyanogenMod nightlies when I'm not having this issue.
I am running the October 12th nightly. The issue started while I was using arrrghhh's kernel, and it persisted even after wiping /system, and /cache and then using just the normal kernel that comes with the October 12th nightly.

Try a different rom?
Sent from my PACMAN MATRIX HD MAXX

I have tried flashing quite a few different ROMs and this has happened on all of them. CyanogenMod, PAC, JellyBam, and ProBAM come to mind.

Have you tried wiping every thing and fastbooting back to stock?

No. Would that really be necessary?
I wiped /system, /data, /boot, /cache, dalvik-cache, basically everything.
This sometimes does resolve the issue temporarily, but it comes back after a while.
UPDATE: I read somewhere that this may be an issue with the battery not being properly calibrated after installation. I don't think I've ever drained the battery all the way down since I got the EB40, so I figured I'd try it.
I tried completely draining it and charging it up to %100 with the phone off and I haven't had any issues so far. Sometimes it went for a week without having issues before though, so I'll be keeping an eye on it in case there are any more issues.

G1 turning off randomly

Recently I decided to update my phone from cupcake to Super D 1.10.3 and I've been getting a problem where my phone would randomly turn off mostly when I'm talking on the phone or when it uses data. I noticed that this problem never occurs when it is hooked up to power though. I also noticed that the battery level are showing strange %s all the time. It would go from like 80% then when it randomly shuts off automatically go into red, to the point where I can't reboot my phone without power. I've tried about 4-5 different roms, reinstalled the radio/SPL but still have the same issue. Hopefully somebody here can help me figure out what is wrong because I don't believe it's a battery issue as it works almost perfectly sitting idle.
Thanks !
That kept happening to me. I decided to brick it, but it died off on it's own and never turned on so it saved me some trouble.
most likely a battery problem i believe. happened to me and i simply replaced the battery.
Try wiping the battery stats and dalvick cache in recovery . Fix permissions . It may be a widget acting up .

I always blame it on the widgets.
What do you have on the screen. Most of the time when it does that it's because of a kernel panic. Too much going on at once can cause the device to crash.
right now the only widgets are power control, and beautiful widgets. I'll try to get rid of power control, hopefully it works! if not i'll call tmobile for a new battery

-_-, i'm kind of a noob so i'm not sure how to do that
go into recovery (assuming you have amonra's) and go to wipe, then theres an option to clear dalvik-cache.
so far nothing seems to be working =\

I have this EXACT same issue. Started about a week ago. I think its has something to do with wiping the battery data too often ot possibly incorrectly?
Gonna try wiping davlik-catche and battery (after a full charge is reported while powered off) but one question...after wiping after charging, do I leave it plugged into power or do I unplug power before rebooting?
EDIT: I also have tried this with difft ROMS and SPLs. Only crashes when on the phone or using data. Not a loose battery (like others have suggested) as I can shake the $#!1 out of it and not have it power off, don't think its the battery. Left my G1 all night, no problems. Started checking out market downloads, crashed (with no "powering down" splash) within 3min of usage. Gonna try downgrading the radio to see if that helps (like was said, seems to be a data issue).
UPDATE: So after un-rooting back to stock android 1.0 and again experiencing these crashes yet still not having one with power supply attached I've narrowed down my problem to either the battery (hopefully) or the phone hardware itself (hopefully not). Find out later on today...
i too have the same exact problem..i twas fine until recently...but when i shifted to cyan 5.0.7 from 4 i had this problem.i thought it was a sd card problem so i just booted the g1 without the sdcard in and it worked fine.so i just reformatted the sd card n checked it with checkflash the sdcard was fine....just put in stock cyanmod and running the phone now will tell u the result when i get back...hopefully it should be the sdcard fault
Its your battery. This started happening to me about 2 weeks ago and i ordered a new battery and all my problems are solved now. Just to make sure look at the center of your battery and check if it is swollen or has a bump, if it does im 100% sure its the battery
hmm yup the battery is swollen at the center looks like i need to get a new one

Random crashes with ICS roms [i9001]

Search didnt help, and cant post on development section yet.
So my problem is with pretty much all ICS roms ive tried, but currently i am running CM9 RC3.
So my phone randomly crashes, when im listening to music with apollo and dspmanager running. sometimes it just crashes in my pocket, sometimes it crashes when some one calls me while im scrolling songs etc, sometimes it just crashes without doing anything, but the weird thing is that everytime my phone crashes, theres a 50/50 chance to boot it, sometimes it boots but battery can jump from 80% to like 14% etc..
sometimes it can jump from 80% to 0% (?) and when that happens my PIN code doesnt register and the phone will just crash in seconds.
But usually i have to take battery out, wait a sec then it usually boots but battery always drops to 4-20% and starts charging on its own..
Before installing i have done full wipe, fixed permissions, calibrated battery, used CWM 5.5.0.4, tried ODIN (no luck with that either).
I flashed Broodrom (GB) And it crashed also with same problem..
Ive tried BioHazard rom, same problem, but when i flash stock ROM, no crashes..
Pls halp
E: Forgot to add, sometimes when it crashes its stuck on bootloop until i take battery out, after that it MIGHT boot, not always. But it never crashes when on charger..
So im guessing im alone with this problem
What do you mean crash??
Does it restart or apps just ForceClose??
If it restarts, does It begin from the beginning of the boot cycle or just the boot animation??
I have the exact same problem with my i9001 since 3 weeks now. It started when flashing broodrom and now happens with any ROM (I have tried a few, cleared cache, format system, etc....). Even the battery behaviour is exactly the same as you describe..
To answer the question: the phone restarts from the Samsung boot screen. IF anybody has any clue, it would be great to hear... It's a very annoying issue I can tell you!
Thanks in advance!

Thats something you should take note: your battery is most likely dying.
I had the same exact issue: Started with the stock ROM, flashed Paranoid but it continued. Took it to service (with a stock ROM), came back re flashed and wiped. The same thing continued, no matter what ROM I was using so i figured it had to be a hardware problem.
I noticed that my battery had swollen a bit, like 1-2 mm so that I could see it easily: the battery should be flat, mine was not. Borrowed a battery from a friends I9001 and got no crashes after 15 minutes of heavy use: problem solved!
Bought a new battery and haven't had a problem since.
The battery has only 6 months warranty and my phone was a year old, I kept the old one as really crappy spare battery.
Sorry guise, forgot to post here!
I bough a Polarcell 1800mAh battery and no more crashes, my old battery had swelled, if yours is also its pretty easy to notice, i just put my credit card on top of the battery to check it.
So yeah, you have this problem, new battery, thats all.

Hi. Thanks for the quick replies!
I have actually just tried to exchange batteries with a friend having the same phone --> his phone crashed, mine did not anymore. I then saw by carefully looking at the battery that it had indeed maybe a 1mm swell in the middle. Just ordered a replacement one. I am confident this will fix the issue.
Again, thanks for your reaction.. Nice to see the responsiveness of this forum!
Cheers,
G.

I have the same exact problem..... but sadly it progressed and after one of those shutdowns i am unable to start the phone.
The phone reaches the galaxy s plus logo and then shuts down. Recovery mode is also down. Fortunately, download mode works, but no matter what roms i flash the problem still exists and the phone doesn't start..... plz help:crying:

If its the exact same problem, you need to change battery and test or try connect to charger and test
i have same problem mostly with app using gps.
today i have installed the new app game from google called ingress and it makes my phone always.
i found a new battery and i will try if something will change.
lately my crashes happens very more often i am using a gigabread+ rom and cwm recovery, but was quite the same when i was in stock .
(sorry for my english)
I got same problem with my phone, first phone gets frozen/stuck and then reboot itself from bootscreen. This was totaly random issue. After trying several roms, and kernels, underclocking cpu, I found that problem is in external sdcard. I think this is battery related issue. After unmounting and removing external sdcard, reboots gone, and battery lasts at least 20% longer. Im not using my phone like external storage, so I dont miss external sdcard, I got quite enough space on internal.
Problem fixed!

I found out that my SIM card was corrupted and caused my phone to be unable to boot. And the random shutdowns with sudden battery drains were fixed by changing the battery

[Q] Weird unprovoked Jellybean Samsung logo brick question

Hi,
A few days ago I upgraded my Note from a very ancient (stock) Gingerbread ROM to (stock) Jellybean. I hadn't been getting OTA updates because the Gingerbread was originally German rather than UK, so quite a long time had passed without any updates. Anyway, because of the no OTA, I used Odin. Everything went fine and I had a nice few days of usage, although the battery consumption seemed to suddenly be quite high, mainly due to additional wakelocks from the new Google Search it looked like. The night before last at about 3% the phone turned itself off, which is unusual as normally the battery will run itself lower than that. BTW, it's an official battery bought just a few months ago to replace the one before, which was getting old.
Yesterday evening when I went to use the phone it was dead. Completely unresponsive. It wouldn't charge either. (The battery had been at about fourteen percent I think, so it should have still had a lot of juice left.) Turning it on would leave it stuck on the Samsung logo only. Recovery mode didn't work, but I could get download mode up, so I installed the Philz kernel as people have said, and then did a reset using that, and all was okay again and after reflashing the ROM I could use the phone again, although because of the reset I had to set everything up again.
Just wondering what people think caused it. Just a weird coincidence, or something else? As far as I'm concerned, the problem has been sort of mitigated for now, but definitely not fixed, because what's to stop it happening again? Has anyone heard of strange things going on with Jellybean? I know there's an issue with flashing/resetting from ICS, but I never used that so I don't think that's an issue, and it looks like it was just a soft brick only. Still, a bit weird and worrying. Does anyone have any ideas?
That was caused by an unexpected shutdown of your phone - if you remove the battery without it fully turning off then you will get it and yeah, blame samsung.
The only way not to have it again is to flash philz kernel with the bootloop fix BEFORE you get the bootloop. Alternativly, if you get it again then you can try what is in this post:

I didn't take the battery out though. It was low but not dead.
Since then it has happened once again, a few days ago, this time at 93% full. I was doing nothing at all taxing to the phone. I was just in a shop listening to an mp3 with the screen off, and then it stopped and the next thing I saw was the bootloop. Luckily (thanks to the new kernel?) I could just delete cache/dalvik and be back up and running again without having to reinstall everything. Today my screen temporarily went a weird purple colour like in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2216867 . Sounds like it's just dying in general really, rather than anything else. My phone contract upgrade date is in two days. Purely a coincidence of course. Weird how phones tend to last about the length of a mobile phone contract. Until then I'm just running on power saving mode and hoping for the best.

[Q] Help! Phone restarting itself at night. Weird battery behavior

Hi all, I've been having serious problems with my pure edition Moto X. Practically since I bought it, a month ago. The phone is stock and without root. The phone restarts itself every night, one or more times. I have tried leaving the phone in safe mode, with or without internet connection and even in battery safe mode and it keeps happening. I also tried to clean cache from recovery and doing a factory reset without consequences. The rest of the day the phone works without any issues.
The most weird thing is the battery stats graph the phone shows after this happens. I attached a screen capture of that. It seems like the phone reads that the battery suddenly drops to zero and stays that way for several hours until it restarts and get a normal reading again. I'm thinking that maybe it has something to do with the battery or the system reading the battery level wrong.
I will greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!
If it's happening in safe mode, than I'd exchange it on warranty.
Is there anyway to manually reinstall lollipop? Maybe something went wrong in the update. If it was a hardware problem it should do it at any tine, right?
Have you tried to factory reset from recovery mode? Also you need to calibrate your battery once a month. Solved my same problem.

Nougat Causes Random Reboots

Ever since I flashed the OTA my N6 has been having random reboots and battery life issues. The reboots happened three times today and all three times happened when the phone was just sitting next to me.
I originally had the WiFi problem where it wouldn't connect to anything until I reset the network settings. A factory reset didn't work for the WiFi issue. I am not rooted and just running stock with encryption.
Android OS is using a lot of the battery as well. You can see the three times today where it rebooted from the attached screenshot.
Any idea what is going on and how to stop it? So far Nougat has been horrible for me when I didn't have problems like this with the marshmallow upgrade.
as a rule of thumb avoid otas, always go for flashing the factory image via fastboot when available , in my experience otas=trouble

I've had the same battery issue. I think it has to do with the data partition. I did not a full wipe when upgrading to Nougat.
Settings - Battery - 3dots -> Battery optimization, and manually optimize all apps for battery use.
When you upgraded without a full wipe -> consider a clean reinstall with a full wipe.

All of the apps are setup for Doze. I did a factory reset after installing the OTA, which didn't seem to help. Also, I hooked up the charger last night at 1 am. It's now 6:50am and it only charged from 10% to 82% in that time. I never had issues like this before.
I did a clean install, I had to because it was from a custom rom, but it's been working perfectly for almost a week. If it had some problems they would have shown by now. No wifi trouble, no battery draining.

I noticed that your screen consumed 38% of the battery. That's very much in 15 hours.
Is it possible that there is something magnetic in the neighborhood that is constantly switching the screen on and off. This may happen with cases with magnetic closer.

It was that high because I was trying to figure out what was going on. I ended up this morning doing a complete wipe and reflash of the factory images instead of the OTA. So far it seems to be stable, except the WiFi constantly is dropping strength and jumping back. Not sure what's causing that one.
what most people dont ever consider.. it can be your personal setup thats causing reboots on nougat.

I use minimal apps, on a fully stock setup. I haven't tweaked anything, so how would that cause the reboots?
After reflashing the full factory images yesterday morning I did not have any random reboots. However, when I plugged in to charge last night, using the original cable and charger, it took over 3 hours to go from 55% to full. This was happening before the full flash, but only after Nougat. The other night it went from 10% to 68% in 6 hours. Quick charge doesn't seem to work in Nougat anymore.
Still getting this? Put stock nougat image on mine and experiencing random reboots. Going to try pure tomorrow, hopefully that resolves it.
Mine quick charges fine on a clean factory image install of Nougat. Battery life doesn't seem great but I'm still letting it settle and not sure how old this device is I picked it up off Craigslist the other day
