[Q] Samsung or Android flaw?

Ive discovered this by accident but while the phone is in standby modus and and the screen is locked, when you press the powerbutton for ~5sec the phone reboots.
In my opinion the "reboot" function mapped to the power button should only be working when the phone is screen unlocked.
Is this a samsung or android thingy?

what do you mean by stand by mode ? when screen is off and not being used ? this doesnt happen on my device...
just dont press the power button for 5 seconds and hey presto !!! job done lol

isn' tthis good feature?
It may help a little when
a. not able to 'wake-up' a sleeping phone
b. upon waking-up , force close message keeps on appearing
In b, i have to take out battery and when using my case-mate barely there cover, it's inconvenient to pry it open.

Sorry, dunno if this is Samsung thingie or Android thingie. But I can "reproduce" the effect on my phone.
It's not reboot though - it goes to "switch off" mode

mine comes up with a message to shut down the phone or enter flight mode or silent mode or data network mode if you hold down the power button for 5 secs in stand by mode.
If your not getting that message first its possible that your firmware is faulty or if its not a stock firmware it may have not been added correctly.

No i meant like for example you put the phone in your pocket like you normally do and the powerbutton gets pressed for ~5sec while your bent down or another position the button gets pressed it would reboot. Im not really happy with that happening would you.
Im on stock js3 onlything i mod was putting the voodoo kernel on it.

Its a good thing
You'll be happy when the phone freezes and you don't need to take it apart to reboot it (pull battery)... Its just like a power button on a PC, if you hold it long enough it shuts the device down. I've never done it by accident though. Just get a $.99 plastic case and your problem will be gone but you'll still have the feature.

Discovered by accident: SAFE MODE

Hello all,
Maybe that will be a bit helpful, I've discovered SAFE MODE.
When I changed back shell in one of mine HTC Raiders, I left protecting tape on side buttons,
what means they were pushed-in all the time during powering up.
I was a bit surprised when watermark SAFE MODE came up in bottom left corner of my screen.
1. Pull battery out the phone.
2. Press power button and in the same time press and hold both volume buttons.
3. Hold both volume buttons down till you will see your home screen.
4. To exit SAFE MODE normally reboot phone.
I do not know what we can do in that mode yet.
But I think is hidden mode.

I've used Safe Mode on other Android devices to uninstall apps that were causing force close loops (you know, boot the device, app force closes, restarts, force closes, never letting you get past a force close box). All it does is boot the phone without launching third-party apps.

i also find this from HTC customer service. u just need to press the volume down button when u the the HTC logo and hold it till the home sreen

Samsung Captivate Power Button Not Working . FIXED :)

If your phone's power button is in a 'pressed' state, like mine, (turns on automatically when battery is inserted), it is a hardware issue.
Here is a hassle free alternative to turn on the phone when it is in sleep mode, without relying on the power key!! Takes a minute or two only!!
1. Get 'Go launcher' from the app market (play)
2. Get 'Go Locker'
3. Now Enable Go Locker on your device. And you are done!!
When the screen goes black again, Just press the volume button, The screen wakes up!!
Using this method you don't lose the normal functionality of the volume rocker!!
I recalled that I used to have Go Locker on my phone, and that when I pressed the Volume key the screen turned on!!
At that time I found it a little annoying, But now it has turned out to be such a gift!!
* For this method to work, your phone has to be rooted.
The power button is not going to work until the hardware is repaired, I prefer to use this method, because it is a safe and quick method!!
Believe me I looked around the internet and this forum for a fix, The usual method: editing the system files on the phone, and after which the volume button cannot be used to control the volume.
For those looking for a quick fix, just follow my method!

There are also several roms out there that have the volume rocker wake built into the rom without making it completely useless for it intended purpose. As well as several that offer a go to sleep toggle in the notification window so you can lock your phone again.

so this is a hardware issue ? i had been using the go locker i been using but the power button is annoying cus it keep showing the power button options . and killing my battery.
only fix is samsung?

Pretty much every version of cm for cappy has volume rocker wake as an option, because of this common problem. I use app called turn off screen as well.

I had the exact same problem with my Epic Touch 4G. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. I couldn't figure out what it the world was causing the issue, until it got worse. Then, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the proper replacement switch you'll need.
(They don't include the required skills to properly desolder/solder it, however. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron.)

Recent apps bug?

Every once in a while, my recent apps button starts to go crazy. I will be reading a book or playing a game, and suddenly the recent apps will start pressing itself. I have even held the phone in the opposite landscape with nothing near the button and this still happens. Is this a software bug, or do I have a malfunctioning unit?

I would bring it back and return it for another device. You don't want to ignore it thinking it might be a software issue then end up having to get a refurbished replacement if it eventually becomes a problem. Seems like this is one of the hazards of getting one of the first run of devices off the assembly line. Besides, it's not like you've rooted and messed it up with "unauthorized firmware"

I have the exact same problem. I went to return it to an ATT store, but they didn't have any black ones in at the time, so I'll go back after they get black ones in. I have not idea is it is software or hardware (or both) but it seems the recent apps button is hypersensitive and can go off if you have a finger anywhere near (even though not touching) the button, even when your finger is only on the chrome part.
The problem seems worse if "Touch key light duration" is set to "Always on"

Just rooted Droid Turbo yesterday. Now, phone freezes every 10 minutes

I just rooted my turbo with Moforoot and it's been O.K. yesterday except the fact that i couldn't install xposed after hours upon hours. I was tired and decided to sleep and my phone fell off my bed and this morning it was dead although the battery was alright. I have a case on my phone and i've dropped it other times. It is also noteworthy saying that today i FELT as if my power button was sort of permanently jammed in my phone - it feels like the power button doesn't come out as much as it should- .
Main concern: my phone has been freezing every so 7-10 minutes after turning it back on, even after deleting and undoing everything that I had done since the day I rooted my droid.
Second Concern: I'm not sure whether my droid's power button normally came with a somewhat deep power button. If anyone can, can you check to see if, when you push in your power button, whether or not the button gets pushed PASSED the phone as in it gets pushed into the phone, unlike the volume buttons. Thanks guys. This problem has made my weekend quite hectic.
It is also worth noting that my phone has had no problems before, so it is fair to conclude that this problem is either due to the rooting, the tampering, or the dropping of the phone.
If anyone would be so generous and would post a video of them pushing their power button, that would be of great help too. Thanks everyone.

Hey - saw your post - I also rooted recently. Separately, was also critical of the right side buttons on a naked XT1254. They are too easily engaged, pocket-pressed or could be "over-pushed" or jarred in a drop.
Buttons: Put your naked phone in a good case that has its own buttons that overlay those on the phone. I use a Tudia hard case. It's bit thick & heavy but the Tudia's buttons take some pressure to push & cannot be pocket-pushed. The case's buttons balance the too-soft touch on phone's buttons nicely. Totally solved over-pushing and no more pocket-pushes.
Root:
I had a couple of crashes post-root too, but tracked it down to a SU conflict between AirPlay and AirAudio BT streaming music or vids from GMusic or DoubleTwist on android>Apple TV>hifi system. Problem solved, gave SU access to AirAudio and took it away from AirPlay and all's right since. Be cautious which apps get SU access and which do not. If your phone crashes, besides a regular restart w/ power button, consider a hard restart pressing screen + both volume buttons at same time. See if the ensuing rooted restart makes the phone behave. It did for me and I've had no probs since. Root freedom has its price! Good luck.

Unfortunately, my power button was "over-pushed" in a drop (putting phone in pocket with gloves on, missed the pocket...oops phone managed to land precisely on the power button) and no longer works. The button is now limp/loose and no longer makes any "clicking" tactile response when pressed. Obviously it does not control the power anymore. I have been afraid to take it into Verizon as there is some clear physical damage near the power button and I am sure I will need to pay to have it warrantied. I wish I would have seen your advice to put it in a case that protected the buttons before it was too late!!
I just wanted to reiterate your point and also ask a follow-up question about your hard restart advice? I have never heard of this method before (pressing screen/both volume buttons). I am a habitual resetter of my devices as I feel like starting with a clean slate always makes them run faster, but unfortunately can't do this anymore unless I let the phone run out of battery completely (which is pretty much impossible with this unit LOL).

I'm not sure what your question is. I discovered 3 button method of reset and found it worked. Had a few crashes the first days post root but since all's well. Zero crashes in 2 weeks. . Not expert enough to tell you why is works, it just did in my case. If you're apprehensive about verizon repair, find a local phone tech, it shouldn't be that tough or costly to replace a power-on button. Then buy a good case!

I am wondering what exactly this three button method is? I am not rooted so it might not work for me (scared to root with the broken power button! thanks for the advice re: local phone tech, I will look into that), but how does it work? Where do I press on the screen, etc? If you could give me a step by step it could prove very helpful.

If your power button is toast, then this is not going to work, but if the power button is functional...
In any screen, just hold down Power + VolUp + VolDown simultaneously for about 3 to 5 seconds or until the phone goes dark.
Then release all 3 buttons and the phone will restart itself in a few seconds with the usual DROID animation screen. No need to press Power-on again.
I'm not a tech but suspect this kind of restart clears a few caches and the phone should run normally on restart, rooted or not. I've done this about 4 or 5 times with no issues. This method will also work if an app "freezes" the phone. It's just another way to restart. Let me know if it works out for u.

Got it. Ya, I guess that won't work for me - I got confused because earlier you said "press screen" so I thought perhaps that might just be the phone screen itself (not the power button). I will look into a local phone tech, this is getting ridiculous!

Just FYI, I'm using an app+widget called Power Toggles (link below) that offers on-screen tap functions, including power, for rooted devices. The widget bar is customizable, to include adding a button that will give you pretty much all options for restarting your phone: Power off, Reboot, Reboot to Recovery, etc. You have to scroll way down the "Add" list to find the power-related buttons, but there's a "master" button that provides several options on pop-up.
I believe it could serve as a good temporary (or permanent) workaround for a broken power button, as long as the phone is never actually turned off ('cause then you really would need a working power button).
There may be other apps that do some of the same things, but I've been using P.T. for a month or more and I'm extremely happy with it. Here's the app info (browser link):

No problem. Yeah, I didn't realize it was using root (on my Razr M, at least for the power functions) till I installed it on my unrooted Moto X.
