Skout is a Virus - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey All,
Got an obscure message / chat from an old friend. it was over Facebook messaging - I was using my HTCOne. We messaged for a bit then he asked me to download a chat app called SKOUT. Sounded odd, but my friend is a DJ in LA so, he's always finding new trendy crap to socialize with.. so I hit the link.
The app took over my phone. It began rifling through my contacts and pounding out random weird emails to everone. Example: From me: "Hey I'm going to buy the Jeep" sent at 4am my time. Stuff like that. I got on with support at Verizon, and we started clearing caches. There was 12kb in apps that had to do with texting or chating that could not be cleared. The 12kb cache areas was written to FB messenger, google+, gmail, and messages. How it was written was a mystery. Since we couldn't clear the cache we did a factory reset on the phone but he 12kb cache was still resident in all those apps. No virus scans that the tech guy had could kill it, so I'm getting a replacement phone under warranty in two days.
Even after the factory reset my phone is still sending out bizarre messages to old girlfriends, old bosses.. It's pretty ****ed up.!
I just wanted to get the word out.

where did you download it from ?

Jordan from Skout here to help
Hi Ffej4ord-
Very sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience with the app. Skout never accesses your personal contacts or sends messages without consent, so I'd love to explore this issue more. Please reach out to [email protected], or feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] as I want to resolve this for you.
Sorry again, hope to hear from you soon.
Best,
Jordan

I just went to my Son's phone which has a message from me that I didn't send asking him to click on the following link.

Man, I wish I were just drunk, and text'ing old girlfriends and bosses. My Son and my Fiance got some more weird texts from me last night. I may have to change my phone number too. The replacement phone is supposed to be here tomorrow - I really hope that fixes the problem.

Situation Update: 10/24/13
I've read everyone's comments, and I'll be the first to say, I don't know what happened. Perhaps it was too harsh to say SKOUT was a virus. Tensions were running high on my side. I think where I'm leaving this - I believe someone used SKOUT as a method for obtaining my personal information. The 12kb cache area within messaging is normal, and in all subsequent test on other phones, this 12kb cache is not able to be cleared. This leaves me a bit frustrated with Verizon support who not only switched out my phone for not being able to clear that 12kb area, but repeatably told me over the phone they they were able to clear that cache on their side. AGAIN.. This does not appear to be the case in looking at other phone's messaging cache.
I have my new phone now, and everything seems to be working properly. No one is telling me that I'm messaging them weird things anymore - so I guess I'm good..?
I'm out.
Ffej

Browsing on this site I just got a pop up saying private chat request from skout apparently 3 miles away. Clicked OK and it took me to skout on the play store???? Very odd but seems very virus like to me.

Skoutspam several times a day
My work has GSM phones in our offices. A colleague installed the app and removed it. But still we recieve spam from skout via his phone.
The annoying thing is that our phones recieve messages as a phone call whith a computer reading it aloud.
This happens maybe five up to ten times a day!

My cousin installed Skout, too, and now his phone is sending Skout links to his contacts. How the hell are the devs not in jail yet?

GV App Update (Google Voice App)

Evan Charlton released a big update to his awesome app for those of us lucky enough to have Google Voice accounts, go grab it!
Hopefully this is appropriate for this forum, if not, sorry, I just wanted to tell anyone else who has been waiting for an update like me!
Tommy
The release notes and documentation can be found here:
http://docs.evancharlton.com/docs/GV
Updating early this morning and I can't say I'm too happy with it. It keeps getting stuck at the setup screen and I can't get into the actual application. The only way I've been able to send an SMS through it is by removing the native Messaging app from default and using Contacts to send an SMS. Only then do I get an option to send through GV.

reboot your g1 and that fixes the settings screen getting stuck. I ran into this problem as well.
Only issue i'm having now is dialing out a number takes a long time, > 30secs even with pin turned off.

Still didn't fix it. I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling.
Edit: Still busted. I'm at a complete loss as what to try next.
Edit 2: Wow I feel stupid. I emailed Evan for help and got this:

The application will not let you run it until all settings have been
filled in. If you're running the latest version from the Market, any
setting with a "*" in front of it has not yet been filled in.

I didn't bother filling in the entry for Google PIN because I selected not to use it but the software still checks to make sure it's filled in. It's like an idiot filter and I failed miserably.

Probably not worth blaming yourself for that one. Sounds like the software isn't that clear. If it doesn't need the pin, it shouldn't need to check for it.
Has it stopped working for anyone since the newest update?
GV calls failing with error message
GV stopped working for me after the latest update a few days back. All attempts at outbound calls result in a message that says "The cost of this call is 4 cents a minute" followed by disconnect beeps. Unsure of whats going on. Maybe google changed something on him.
Would love to get it working again, just made the switch to routing all calls through GV after the previous update and then this one comes out and I lost all connectivity.
Good news is that you can download all previous versions from the link a couple of posts above. I'm trying it now.
GV working for me again...
It appears that GV is now working again. From what I've seen the failures are intermittent across all versions. I'm guessing Google is fiddling with things on their end and temporarily killing Evan's app.
Wonder if they're making their own...
GV seemed to hurt performance
I was a big fan of his GrandCentral app. When he made the GV v2 app, I was looking forward to lots of functionality which it has, but it always seemed to severely degrade my phone's UI responsiveness and when it really got bad, I would get Force Close/Wait windows for GV.
I've unloaded it and am waiting for another big release to try it again.
I found a change log with download links on his website: http://evancharlton.com/projects/gv/
Apparently that error has been corrected.

$.04 a minute crap is back again.
Well... after committing to routing all my calls through GV and having GREAT SUCCESS!!! for about a week the dreaded "The cost of this call is 4 cents a minute" - BEEP BEEP BEEP is back again.
Had to stop routing all calls through GV to ensure I'm not missing any important calls. This is very frustrating as I love the app and really love cutting down on costs. Can't wait until GV is 100% stable. I still think Evan's app is not the problem, rather Google fiddling with something on their end which in turn breaks GV.
Anyone who has further insight throw your two cents in here.
On a side note, I wonder if Evan is aware of XDA-DEV? Wonder if we'd be of any help to him, or if he'd be a good contributor here.
" $.04 a minute crap is back again".
is that local calls or long distance out of country?
I've had zero troubles with GV; it's more than likely GOOG is doing something with their code.
GV error...
.04 cents a minute is happening for local calls within my home area code. I'm nearly certain its Google's fault... wonder if this is a sign they're working on mobile client as well?
I'm an idiot.
Finally figured out whats happening with the error I metioned earlier in this post. The 4 cents a minute error happens when I try to call a contact that doesn't have an area code in the number. For instance 456-7890 instead of 123-456-7890 triggers the error.
Overall the GV app is great. Very stable and full of great features. Two things I'd like to see. Support for a search function in contacts is a big one. Integration of my GV contacts with my other google account contacts is another. The former is on Evan to develop. The latter is all Google and I hope they hurry up with that.
Also - just discovered that GV has some widget features in the new Hero theme, never saw them before, not sure if they were there or not.
Official Google Voice App?
Looks like Google INC. Just rolled out a google voice application on the market
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice
EDIT: woot just got GV invite!
And it looks like they are going to offer voip callout too. The S is about to hit the fan in regards to Google's relationship with carriers.
This is a bigger deal than Chrome OS imo.

[Q] Notification Saying "fwd fwd please call [?phone number]"

Today I saw something really weird, I am asking for an explanation of what it was.
I had my N1 screen locked and in my pocket.
I took it out to check the time... so first I hit the power button to turn the screen on.
As soon as the screen was on I saw what I think is called a "biscuit?" type notification on my phone that was centered in the screen. It said:
"fwd fwd please call [phone number I didn't recognize]"
Below that was two buttons I think for "Call" or "Dismiss".
I hit Dismiss and went on to unlock the phone and check the time but it was the only time I have ever seen that type of notification.
I checked new Emails, Texts, Chats but it wasn't part of any of those.
Sorry I couldn't get a screen capture of it.
Any bright ideas out there?
My configuration:
N1, Tmobile, was rooted prior to manually install gingerbread from update.zip. [I don't think it's rooted anymore]

If anyone did have one of those listed apps, I'd also suggest turning on Google's 2-Step verification for your Gmail account. I unfortunately downloaded the 'Chess' app last week, only to find it didn't actually appear to do anything at all when I opened it on my N1. But within a few days, my Gmail account was hijacked for spam. It's the only correlation I have, and while I have no proof, it's a strong suspicion and probably good advice anyway.

On that note, it's probably not a bad idea to go ahead and install a free mobile antivirus program like Lookout, AVG, or Norton.
I'm not sure if this is the same, but might be something to look at. My voicemail with tmo offers people the option to page instead of leave a message. When they do, I always get some cryptic 'please call [number]' message that shows up like a text.

Not having access to those malicious apps to test with, I can't say for sure. What I can say is that those antivirus apps will detect far more malicious apps than you would without them. Especially when it's free, it doesn't make any sense to not have some sort of protection.
EDIT: As mentioned on the Official Lookout Blog:
Update: We’ve deployed an over-the-air update that protects Lookout users from all known instances of DroidDream.

So at least with the update, yes, Lookout would now detect the DroidDream malware. Again, better safe than sorry.

I think this is what I saw. I have TMo and their visual voicemail app, and with no signal in the building I was working in a caller must have done that paging thing.
It was weird that it didn't look like a text notification.
Also thanks for the tip about malware, I didn't have any of the apps listed, but the google account check is very good advice.

I was thinking they might be called "pancake" notification? Some sort of breakfast snack... either way I repeated the condition by dialing my phone and "paging" option. Thanks all you all.

[SOLVED] My Google account just vanished!

Earlier today when I switched on my phone and tried to access Market, I was asked to re-enter password. I entered two passwords I remembered and I couldn't log in. Then, I tried password recovery. I couldn't answer one call and I couldn't enter the proper recovery code in the second call.
Now, when I try to recovery password, I get an internal error message. All my Google profiles such as Google+ profile and Blogger profile are returning a not found error.
So, what just happened to my Google Account? Was it hacked and someone deleted it? Or, Google deleted it for some violation(without giving me any notice at all)?
How can I get in touch with Google and recover my account? This account is really important to me. I have a lot of stuff linked to it as well as my whole address book.

Hmm yea. Looks like every service has gone down. My problem is I don't know if my account was compromised or it's a Google issue.
If my account was compromised and deleted, I have to act fast. Alternatively, if it's a Google issue, I can wait. The problem is that this account had so many of my important contacts, photos, 5000+ bookmarks, few years worth of email and so on. =(

Log in to your Google account from a PC and change password. Try phone again after this.
A couple days ago, I entered the Market and it told me that my account wasn't correct. It didn't allow me to do anything, or change my password. In a last ditch effort, I resynced the Google stuff. That fixed it. I'm not sure if I had the same problem, but you could try that and see what happens.

It says incorrect username and password. Going to recovery page gives an internal error message.
I have been locked out after forgetting password earlier as well but I was able to reset every time. Now, I can't reset either.
Give it a day or two, I was locked out from my phone once, seems an infectious spam mail tried sending out messages to my contacts but Google stopped it before it was able to execute a send function. I was restored after trying with my old pass the next day.

I was able to get to reset password page today. I couldn't reset it yet because the phone which had my SIM acted up and didn't let me read the text.
Nonetheless, this is my guess.
After a certain number of failed attempts to reset password, the password recovery option that was used is blocked for 24 hours. Since I had only one recovery method, it has given the error and locked out my account.

I've left this conversation several hundred times over the last 4 days. It keeps showing back up. I've cleared data on both devices, and my tablet is actually turned off right now, so logging out isn't the issue.
I have been trying to recreate your problem.
So far, no luck...
Only thing I can think of, maybe the problem isn't on your side but on the side of your conversation partner?
According to google the only way to get back in a conversation is when someone invites you back in.
When you leave a conversation, you’ll no longer receive messages from that conversation and won’t be able to access or view the history of the conversation unless you’re invited back.
Since one-on-one conversations are between you and another person, there’s no way to completely leave them.
I'm just guessing here. Sorry, I wished I could help you.

Issues with Google Messages app on Pixel 5!

I just got the Pixel 5 and absolutely love it!
However, I keep having this very odd and reoccurring issue where at least once or twice a day, when I tap on the GM app, I get a blank screen and can't access my messages UNLESS I close out the app and clear the cache as well. Then it's fine. But when this issue occurs, any pics or attachments sent to me are no longer accessible. I tap on them, and it just tells me they're expired even though the person had just sent them like 10 minutes or so ago. The blank screen thing is bad enough, but this is def worse because then I have to ask the person to resend whatever they'd sent.
Does anyone here have ANY clue why this is happening? It's really annoying. I've tried all sorts of things including clearing the data for GM, as well as for the SMS and MMS system apps, uninstalling and then reinstalling GM's updates (since you can't uninstall the app itself because it's a Google phone), etc. But honestly I can't seem to fix the issue.
If anyone here has a resolution for this issue, please reply to this post as I'm sure I'm not the only one dealing with this.
Thanks in advance!!!

I didn't have the same issue but did have Google messages issues where conversations would take a while to load up and messages would take minutes to send.
I went to the play store, turned off auto updates for Messages, then hit uninstall, which just uninstalls the updates and rolls back to an earlier version. Back to normal. Everything worked well.
I eventually did a factory reset and am now running on the latest messages fine.

I went to the play store, turned off auto updates for Messages, then hit uninstall, which just uninstalls the updates and rolls back to an earlier version. Back to normal. Everything worked well.
I eventually did a factory reset and am now running on the latest messages fine.

Yeah aside from the factory reset, I did all that. Didn't work for me either.
How do you turn off auto updates for Messages in the Play Store app though??
Thing is, if they put out a fix for this via an update, then turning off auto updates will only postpone resolving the issue too.
I've read that some people have done a factory reset and STILL had the issue though too, so I'm very hesitant to do all that.
Thanks though!

The GM app (I'm not sure what that is, GM Android Auto?) probably has a contact developer link in the G Play listing. Take a bug report/logcat and send them an email with the complaint and attach the log.

Try joining the beta for messages? It's generally slightly newer and you can join, leave without anything being wiped, might help, might not. Outside that, I've got nothing to offer.

No. I was just abbreviating Google Messages. lol
Oh it DOES have that info unholy, but they apparently don't respond to messages it seems. I've sent feedback though to them about it, or well, a bug report with the log attached.

Ducter. I've tried that before. I don't believe it makes ANY difference honestly. I prefer to be off Beta anyway. Just gimme the STABLE version of Messages, thank you! lol

What do you mean sruel?
If you mean restore a backup of text messages, then no. If not, please elaborate more.

You have the option I believe to either restore all messages or not. But one easy thing you can try is to backup all your messages, they have a free 3rd party app, then delete all of them and try GM again to see if it fixes your issue. There might be one message improperly formatted or something that is hanging up your system. Then you can restore what you need and not everything. Worth a shot.

Go to the app in the play store and on the very top right click on the three dots. You'll get a drop down box where you can toggle automatic updates.
Some of these issues are so finicky when factory resets won't help. Good luck
