I currently own a Galaxy Nexus, and I'm thinking about upgrading to the Xperia T (or TX rather, cheaper and available now in NY). I'm just trying to get some opinions on if this is a smart upgrade.
Biggest problem with my Nexus is the screen... its not great. I can deal with the lack of development on the Xperia T.... (more time for life without flashing roms)
Love the camera on the T... Galaxy Nexus not so much.. Xperia should also be better to hold in my hand...
Any opinions, thoughts? Should I stick with my Nexus?
I suggest upgrading!
Xperia T is incomparable faster phone, with great stability and very nice display (in sunlight readable).
And I know what I am saying, after one month of GN usage.
I actually like the Sony skin and it doesn't change too much so I don't care much about custom roms at this point.
I like the T a lot more, but that's up to you if you wanna upgrade
Sent from my Xperia T
I just bought my Xperia T tonight and already I like it way more than my HTC One X. I had the GN before the HOX and loved the GN for it's ease of flashing and modding. It was also comfortable in the hand but the screen and camera really let it down.
I think the XpT will be a great upgrade.
My vote? Go for it!
Can one of you guys please tell me if you can disable the battery percentage? It might be a dealbreaker for me, believe it or not.
The Xperia T has an LCD screen and the text on it are crisp and clear. It could stand to be a bit brighter but for battery conservation purposes I like to keep mine on 50% brightness so that really doesn't affect me all too much.
I think development on the Xperia T could rival that of the SIII but since the T's just come out and the SIII has been out for months now it's just going to take a little bit of time. The same can be said on the accessory front too!
As for OS Sony has promised Jelly Bean soon after launch but who knows when that will be, only that it will come eventually.
As for handling, the Xperia T feels very well made but if you are at all familiar with Sony products then you won't need any explanation. But the rubber matte back cover is indeed a nice touch. I was at first put off by the fake in store models since they felt way more rubbery but the real phone feels way more smooth. Like an expensive screwdriver's handle. Coming from a Nexus you probably prefer stock Android but Sony's skin is very light and non-intrusive, unlike Touchwiz, and the abundance of black makes it look much more elegant and mature. Rather suited towards a businessman than compared to say Sense or Touchwiz.
And if all that hasn't convinced you of the T then maybe James Bond will in the upcoming film, Skyfall. Who could argue with a secret agent with a license to kill?
Thank you for that detailed reply, I really do appreciate it! I love the look of this device, love the fact that it is a bit smaller (will feel better in my hands), and I've never had a Sony phone, so I'm looking forward to a change.
Can you tell me if you can disable the battery percentage in the status bar please?
Thanks

I looked everywhere but I cannot find an option to remove it.
I didn't see a way to remove the percentage on the stock ROM. CM10 has the option though I'm sure.

I have been using Xperia z1 past 5 months....i m getting a chance to exchange it with LG G2....So m in a big confusion..shud i or not?
i look for Battery backup, gestures, Regular updates and non heating device...wat do u think guys?
No.
There's a big trade off: unless you live in Asia, it's likely that you're going to be offered the 16gb version of the G2. No expandable storage.
This is, and always will be, the biggest issue I have with the Western G2 - 16GB is WAAAAAY too small for storage - it's bad enough that the Z1 only has 16GB for Apps but 16GB for Apps AND Content?
No, no, no.
Stick with the Z1.
(P.S. The G2 has a terrifying amount of post production on it's photographs - while nice when zoomed out, the camera has nothing on the Z1's, especially post KitKat).
LG G pro 2
LG G PRO 2 is better than G2..
But..
Z1 still be my best collection ever..

I think your gonna have a BAD time...stick with z1
Thanks for ur advice everyone...
The Lg G2 is 32 gd version...
If you have nothing against the plastic back, lack of SD card and LG ui then you might be happy with the trade
However the Z1 was ~600 euro at release while the g2 only costed ~420 euro, so keep that in mind

G2 - screen quality, screen size to phone size ratio
Z1 - build quality/materials, expandable storage, water resistance
rest is pretty much the same, choose whats important to you.

try it and see,
the main drawbacks for the G2 are,
* Plastic build
* Slightly thicker
* No water proofing/dust resistance
* Cluttered and sometimes laggy UI
The UI issues may have been resolved with Kitkat update, you'll have to try and see if you can live with those compromises above.
regards
In my opinion the Z1 is the better phone overall
But the G2 has some key advantages, a much better screen and a 32GB option which should be a must nowdays

I would always prefer Xperia ZR as it has various advantage over Moto X like being water resistant!( RAINY SEASON IS HERE FINALLY ) XD
But also check out HTC 816( My friend bought it yesterday and I kinda like it!) in the same budget

My hands are small :3
Won't be able to handle it properly. I am more of a power user (I prefer using custom roms over stock roms). So I need a phone which has good support from manufacturer. Like in terms of releasing proper kernel source and stuff

For that go with Xperia ZR due to some crucial advantages over moto x like water resistant (can shoot under water) and glorious 13 megapixel camera.
Also this device has official cyanogenmod support (go n search "dogo") and currently has the official cyanogenmod 11 M8 rom with android 4.4.4. So that's a plus. I don't think you will ever flash any rom on moto x as it is close to aosp.
Xperia ZR is for you!!
Sent from my C5502 using XDA Free mobile app
Moto X for sure
Despite being a ZR owner, I think Moto X is obviously the right choice for you.
Moto X over ZR:
- Much better support : Motorola, even now sold to Lenovo, is way better to Sony in software updates. Moto X has been always among the first phones updated to new Android versions until now and will very likely get Android L, while the same can't be told about ZR. Also as you can see, there are a lot of custom roms and kernels for Moto X, while ZR is listed in low activity devices section of Xda not without reason. I can't even find a custom kernel with dt2w for ZR.
- Much better camera performance dim light conditions. Sony phones are notorious for blurry pics. In good light conditions ZR camera is good, but I'm not sure if it's superior than Moto X. Also 2M vs. 0.3M front camera.
- Amoled vs TFT display : better contrast and outdoor visibility.
- Cool features : Active Display, Touchless Control, Always on voice recognition
ZR over Moto X:
- Better battery
- Good proprietary apps : Walkman, Album, Social Camera are the ones I miss the most when switch to custom roms
Everything else, imo, are quite similar in the two phones. Well some will cite waterproof as a critical strong point of ZR, buy actually you can't use it in sea water because salt will damage the phone, you can't use it in pool neither unless you want chemicals attack it. When they say waterproof, they mean Pure Water. About some water drops like rain, actually Moto X can handle them well just like ZR (its inside is coated with water-resistant coating). Performance are quite the same.
So why didn't I buy a Moto X Because in my country it asks $500 while ZR only $300. And ZR is a very good phone in its own right.

Build wise

Camera wise
Sony
Rom wise
Sony
Hope that clears things up for you LOL!
I'm not against Samsung or what ever, not at all.
We can all see what phone is build better. Camera wise, I'd say the S4 is better by default, but if you tweak the XZ's camera it can be better for sure.
Stock rom the XZ also wins. Custom roms.... well in the end they all run on Android, so the difference really isn't that big.

Tnx for clear answer,I've seen some comparisons on youtube about camera and S4 was better when taking picture in day light and low light, but that was old videos with older android,so today is different?btw. I know about build wise there is no doubt...
As a sony funboy,i have to admir that, in low lighf samsunf is way better, but if compare with real life view, samsung looks like crap, greens is not green, blue is not blue. Just crayon colours.
As my tought, samsung's gui looks like cildish, still like android 2.1.
Still i suggest everybody around me to buy samsung. Just to make them suffer. Ahhaha.
For real. Goto one ofe electronic store. Get both of them in your hand. use both of them for awile. With which one you feel better, get it. All new smartphones are powerfull enoght to handle all kind of applications.
Most importand thing is, will you be happy one mounth later you bought device.

I disagree on that one.
I think the XZ is one of the bests when it comes to taking pictures in daylight, when there is barely any light it's one of the worst!!!
Take a look at some pictures I made more then a year ago:

In my opinion it isn't I just avoid taking pictures in the dark, when using the flash, I prefer to use torch instead of the actual flash. (Torch keeps your led on instead of flashing.)
I was also considering the S4 before I got the Z. What I learned so far:
S4:
+better screen (although a lot of the devices has an issue called purple smearing, some claim it's a software bug, some claim it's hw..who knows; it is certainly better than Z's - which is also pretty good)
+better camera (really isn't much to tell, maybe z1's and z2's can match the S4 camera's quality, Samsung flagships are always stong in this category)
+better harware (no brainer: SnapDragon 600 vs S4 Pro, it is better... avoid the Exynos 8-core one: no LTE)
+more customs ROMs, if you don't care for warranty, there's a world of ROMs to discover on the S4
+more software features (TouchWiz hits hard here, Sony hasn't got anything up against Air Gestures and the many-many more features of S4)
-worse design (Sony Z is really a looker, even looks more sexy than Z1 IMO because of the matte-black skeleton; S4 is just a pile of plastic, and it's round frame is really prone to damage, even a rubber bumper can damage it)
-worse ROM: 4.4.2. is although not quite as streamlined as previous ROMs for the XZ, Samsung even manage to make a worse one for their S4 (quesion here is are they leaving it like that: Samsung-> I don't think so, Sony-> more likely, no announce of bugfix update yet)
-KNOX: it just sucks
I went for the Z, because of the looks....and I'm happy with it

Not at all. I own a Z and I love it, as I've said previously. G2 is just near-the-same price category as Z snd S4 nowadays, that's why I recommended it (by saying get a G2 I automatically became an LG fanboy lol ...clever thinking:good
And yes Z2 is an excellent recommendation for someone who is looking for a smartphone in the price range of the XZ and SGS4
Samsung has Knox, Sony does not, making it much more user friendly when it comes to flashing

XZ is a piece of art with glass and the 1st flagship of Sony, great in performance and a very nice phone and very good custom roms for it ^^

Hello,
I read through the boards but it's a bit difficult to get a measure. If I want an AOSP/cm like experience, is z3 compact still ok to buy (used)? Or should I be looking to move onto newer pastures like the z5 compact? sorry for the sony noob question.
Z5c = Z3c + better camera + fingerprint scanner.
Z3c is a more than capable device. Practically a flagship with a small screen. I run the latest slimm rom which is 6.0.1 and I experience no slowdowns whatsoever.
Camera is not so good in lowlight and front camera is also bad. At the moment I am also looking to upgrade to a x5 compact. Though, I find it hard to justify all the hassle of selling and buying me phone since the gain is limited.
Durability of the flaps is also an issue. And the back is slippery. For this reason I invested in New flaps, back cover sticker, tempered glass protection and magnetic usb chargers. In all probably an investment of 50 bucks at least. Half of which z5 doesn't need.

The Z3c and Z5c are very similar, with a fingerprint sensor and camera sensor being the main difference. If you are going to be going to an AOSP or CM build then you won't be using the camera much as it'll be broken by unlocking the bootloader.
There is more development on the Z3c, it's been out longer and therefore has more custom roms and mods that the Z5. If customising is your bag, then I'd say the Z3c is what you want.
But be aware of the things that happen once you unlock you bootloader and make sure you get a backup of your TA partition, there is a great guide here..
Edit: +1 on the magnetic charger, it will save the life of the flaps
Hey y'all thanks for the quick notes. Z5 compact doesn't have a groundbreaking camera either so it's ok on that department. Regarding AOSP/CM, the sony open/AOSP/concept development is basically AOSP + sony DRM camera right? If I use that, does that allow me to use the camera well? I just like it plainjanejoe

I don't know where you got the info on AOSP working with DRM, but the thread I looked at is for unlocked bootloaders only (and seems to have ground to a halt). Same with any CM build. I don't think there's 6 build for AOSP, sorry. The Sony Concept and Beta builds you refer to also require unlocked bootloader if you want to use root. It would be easier to find a pre-rooted 6 rom and use that. The guide mentioned above goes into detail about how to get there.
6 hasn't been out for the z3c very long, so consequently it's still full of bugs and problems. There is a patch arriving soon that hopefully will fix MM stock and Wajk is committed developer who has got a debloated 6 build working and will apply the upcoming patches as soon as they arrive.
I must have confused it with another sony maybe. So when you say the camera is broken, do you mean it doesn't work period

No it works, but low level noise is increased. I don't think you get 20Mp output either. Basically all the proprietary software that Sony incorporates into cleaning up the picture and some of the image stabilisation is disabled.
Apparently Google camera does a good job with the Sony lens as a replacement to the stock app.
Edit: if CM/AOSP is your requirement, then I don't think you're going to have much joy with Sony. Their system of locking DRM keys on an encrypted partition is going to get in the way of any serious CM development.
Personally I think the camera is one of the phones stronger features (Sony make the sensors for apple/samsung phones), so to break it in order to install a different looking rom on it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
If you don't like the Sony launcher, install another one.
Z5 Compact runs on better hardware, slightly better camera than Z3C but the Z3C has better xda support than the Z5C has, either way both devices are futureproof in a sense 2-3 Years from now their hardware would still be decent. There is also AOSP/CM for both devices, but take note unlocking the bootloader removes the camera features ( post image processing and x-reality ) Sony has put into the phone
