Hi all,
Please let me start off by telling you that I'm new to Sony devices
So this evening I received my new White Xperia T. I've been a bit frightened by all those posts on the back paint coming of on the black model, and to my surprise, the white model sports an hard plastic-matte finish, not as rough as the silver one, but quite similar to the Nokia Lumia 900's one. It wasn't mentioned in any review.
I'm happy with it: less parts, less chances for something to fall apart.
Anyway to the main question: on the box there's a relatively thick screen protector, of the electrostatic kind (impossible to put in place properly), and the screen already has a thinner one applied. What's it for? Why bundle 2 screen protectors?
Is it so delicate to require a factory applied screen protector?
Also I find the screen has a bit too much friction to my thumbs... does it go back to normal if I remove the screen protector?
thank you very much!
The factory applied screen protector is the shatterproof one. It does indeed have more friction, but I suggest leaving it on.
Hmmm, I don't know. I really hate the added friction it causes, and the fact that fingerprints really show on it...
Also how can a plastic screen protector render a glass shatterproof?
I keep my devices very well, I dropped my current device only 1 time in ten months, I wonder if this warrants for removing the "shatterproof" protector...
Waiting for more opinions
Thanks
Just to let you know, the pre installed one its not scratch proof, so after a month of use, tons of scratch, so I removed it and put an after market one.
It took me about 20 mins to remove, yes, it is extremely difficult to remove, if you managed to pull it right off without holding the screen, you can pull the whole screen panel off, no kidding. Lol

Was reading it last night on the Vodafone Australia Google + page.
Be warned, also warranty maybe different in your country. Confirm with Sony in your country

Unbelievable.
They create a glass phone and cover it in plastic
Still looks and performs much better without it. I'm happy i removed mine.
It only breaks warranty if the damage is a consequence of you removing the film.
Meaning if your screen shatters you can't say I want a replacement because you removed the protective layer (but you wouldn't get a replacement even with the protector on anyway).
Total baloney, loads of people removed theirs from other Xperias and had no trouble whatsoever. The Z is no different.
Glad I did it, screen feels so much nicer to the touch.

Yes, screen feels a lot better. And... Phone looks better too, which is why i bought it partly for. For the look and design. (+performance too) :highfive:
Nothing there that is not already obvious, if you remove the film and then drop the phone causing the screen to crack of course it won't be covered under warranty, but then even if the film was on and the same thing happened, that wouldn't be under warranty anyway.
The only slight problem is if you do as they say and break the waterproof sealant while removing the film and then decide to drop the phone in water, but you'd have to be pretty clumsy to remove it that viciously!
So if you want the film removed go ahead and enjoy the different look and feel, I'm pretty sure most of us are going to be careful with our phones all the same
I'm just curious as to whether anyone thinks leaving the film on might slightly reduce the chance of the glass cracking to start with.
I doubt it, and if it did surely the difference would be minute.

Drop with layer = contained crack, replacement via insurance.
Drop without layer = crack & shatter, replacement via insurance.
Remove it, it looks/feels sooooo much better without.
Decided to remove both films - glad I did!
Phone look indeed much better, doesn't attract dust, less fingerprints, better responsiveness and even better screen IQ.
:good:
But the Sony Logo will be gone if you remove it, right?
Won't there be much more Fingerprints on it? Heared the Screen doesnt have an oleophobic coating?
Neither does the film.

no, sony logo will be part of the glass. someone else confirmed it in the other thread. the photos you see online are the pre production models.
btw, most companies saying stuff like it may or will void your warranty when you removed it and blah blah.....sometimes they just want to scare you. They dont want you to remove it so they dont have to deal with it. just saying ~

I haven't seen anyone say that, every single post I've seen where people say they've removed it say the logo has come off on their new phones...
My SONY logo came off with/was printed on the pre applied layer.
Not bothered.
I removed it on the back.
It feels much better now, but there are much much more fingerprints visible
I dont want to imaging how bad his would be for the front

Read with understanding...
They will not repair your device if you take it off and damage the phone in a way that is a direct result of that...
If the internal hardware is faulty, they won't look at your screen and repair the phone.
If you'll damage the screen though ( crack, broken glass pieces damaging the screen itself etc ) and have the film removed - they'll most likely deny your claim.
If you decide to take a safety measure off - don't blame Sony if you damage this particular part. It's obvious, it's understandable, it's perfectly fair.

Dropping & cracking a screen isn't covered by warranty anyway.
It's accidental damage, not faulty equipment.
Therefore, removed or not, it's a repaired screen or replacement Z either out of your own pocket or via insurance.
Guys you are missing the point here. If you break the screen with or without plastic film warranty won't cover repairs in either case, but it will be much easier to shatter screen without protective film. Same amount of force which is enough to shatter unprotected screen won't be enough to shatter screen with film on it.

I thought the film had no effect on its force resistance, just that the shards if broken will be kept safe and not shatter everywhere.

Yeah mine came with both. I think everyone has them.
Some people removed them, but some people say they help with the strength of the glass.
I took my front one off because it got some marks on it... Seems fine without it.
I say: Leave them on until they get damaged (which seems quite easy)

Afaik the Sony logo is on the preinstalled shatterproof protectors and will disappear when removing the front one.
it seems, not only this protectors increases dust absorption and finger print but also is getting a feel of lost slip on screen when i want to sweep between the pages.i think is better to remove this shields if it is possible and dont injury knocks the screen
my q is why sony should be placed these protectors even with using drugonglass in z?!!!is this can a reason for worse viewing angle on xperia z?!!!

Then you're very lucky as the back of mine looks like a multicolored rainbow of oil slick after a few mins use.
Did you lose the Sony logo off the front? If you didn't you likely just removed the second screen protectors and left the shatter proof factory ones on.
Mines almost unusable now as the fingerprints are worse than any phone I've ever owned.
Viewing angles remain unchanged from removing the protectors, you shouldn't spread false info as there will be a lot of unhappy campers removing their protectors and seeing zero viewing angle difference.
I think you'd better not peel them off. These coverings are designed to prevent broken glass splinters hurting people, and hard and stuck very tight with special method in factory. It won't affect display I suppose, trust Sony. It's part of the device. Moreover, since it scratches easily, add one more film on it...
warranty
not sure if removing sony anti-shatter foils does also remove warranty...as you are given foils also in package, maybe read somewhere on XDA
I do not understand why people remove these...
- When NOT removed and If you drop the phone, it prevents the glass splinters from shattering all over the place.
- When removed Sony can no longer guarantee the phone to be water proof, as stated in another topic.
- When removed the phone attracts more fingerprints.
- When removed you lose the Sony logo on the front.
As far for these scratching a lot, I have not put on any extra screen protector and do not have a single scratch yet.
However I do use a leather case, always do that with all my phones.
Used Xperia Play for 2 years aprox, not a single scratch on the pre installed film.
Kind regards, Stefan.
The dragontrail glass is only for durability purposes! DO NOT remove the shatter proof sheet, it protects the screen from drop shocks so it doesn't get broken! Use the supplied screen protector and you will be fine! Unfortunately here in Greece it ships without screen protectors in the box and damn we got the highest price! (€699)
So my question is quite straight-foward.
When you bought your Xperia SP?
Did you use screen protector all of this time?
Did we really need screen protector or not? Please share your experience, with or without it.
I bought mine on June 2013, and since that, my screen almost never had contact with fresh air. Always protected using 3rd party screen protector. I'm too afraid to peel off mine. My screen protector had a few quite scratch. So now I have two option, buy new one, or live without it. Need opinions.
Thanks alot guys.

One year ago my father almost threw my SP into a brook. Fortunately it didn't land in the water but on the gravel that constituted the bank of the brook. The phone now has got some scratches on the left side of the aluminium frame and on the screen there's only this small and superficial scratch (look in the phone's corner in the attached photo). Even if the impact wasn't a very strong one, I'd still say that the screen protector isn't needed unless you often hit your phone with violence

I bought mine in December 2013, and similar like you, the screen is fully protected the second it was bought from the Sony centre.
It has also been replaced a multiple of times. I used the plastic one, which is also the first one, for quite a long while. for about a year if i could pinpoint correctly. It worked fine back then, no peels at the edges and such, just that i discovered we can find glass screen protector on ebay and decided to use glass one ever since.
Coincidentally; i am currently waiting for a new one to arrive
------
So stories aside, i think you would be better off with a screen protector. A slight scratch on my screen would bother me so much — not that i am obsessed with having a scratch free screen to show off to people, it's just that a single scratch could distort the content on the screen (ie that RGB stripes that you can see) and that bothers me so much. If it is on a screen protector i can accept that because I know if i replace a new one the thing will go away but if it is really on the real phone screen then that's another story of indefinite frustration.
So yeah, TL;DR: Get a screen protector
But yeah; personal opinion should not dictate other's choices.

Yeah, considering the SP has a flat screen, a tempered glass would provide great protection from accidental drops while giving you that "naked" display feeling compared to film protectors.
It's almost my third year with my xsp. I haven't used any screen protectors except the first few months, but there's not even a single scratch or anything looks and feels bad on my screen. I dropped it a lot, even from the second floor but screen is still fine.
But use one anyways.
XSP Screen
XSP has scratch less glass. Unless you hit it with nail, it won't get any scratch. I suggest you to not to cover it. It looks beautiful without cover.
I bought mine more than three years ago, on July 2013. On first month, without a screen-film, it started to get minor and almost invisible little scratches, probably from walking long distances with it shaking on my pocket. So I decided to put a screen-film and have been using it since then. Never changed the film, I will soon.
About covers or frame-bumpers, I would recommend one. My SP got a crack on the lower blinker glass after a drop in the garage. After the rubber cover I dropped it a lot of times and the glass is still ok.
I have had mine for just over 3 years now. It came with a screen protector in the box. I messed up trying to install it and as dust was stuck between it and the screen, I removed the protector within less than an hour.
3 years later, the plastic surrounding the screen is in quite a poor state but the screen itself is immaculate.
So I like just about everything about the Sony Z compact line of phones but durability wise I have been unlucky. My first Z3 compact died from water damage and my 2nd one has a screen that is ready to fall off the device.
I choose to buy a HTC U11 to replace my Z3 compact as I have never owned a HTC phone before and thought I would try something different.
What I would like to ask here though is it worth trying to fix the Z3 compact to sell or not?
The only way to protect this phone:
The phone bends 0.1mm causes the phone screen to start opening. So it's not suitable for jeans pockets.
I remedied this by using an anodized aluminium bumper and tempered glass both sides.
Sony does a very bad repair of it's phones, and the issues will return, and their parts are expensive.
It is better to do it yourself and use B7000 glue, use plenty, easily removable for future repairs, no heat, clothes pegs, wait 48 hours before removing pegs or turning on the phone. And look for the best grade of screen with frame, Sony uses two manufacturers for its screens.
My Z3C has a screen that is lifting. This thread and others seem to indicate that fixing the screen is not hard but hardware is not my thing at all...
Would a phone repair place (in a shopping centre) be able to do this kind of repair? Is the phone much different to other phones that people would take in for screen replacements?
I don't care about the loss of waterproofing. The screen isn't even falling out, just lifted in the corner. I don't want to send the phone anywhere and be without it, or have it come back changed in unexpected ways...

Phone shops including Sony themselves have difficulty in repairing this particular phone, I think any phone shop can do this repair, but, they must use the B7000 glue or similar, or silicone, and not the red tape they usually use, it's useless, as this phone can heat up, or the blue z3c ready cut tape is not so good either. And if you get the wrong screen (clone), the colours will not be as good.
Many phone repairers have the clone screens that are thicker than the original.
The screen sometimes is actually bent, along with the body, check on a flat surface.
Always buy a good screen together attached with the body, and never by itself.
So armed with this knowledge and or hardware, you could go talk with a phone repairer... The first 3 times, shop, but maybe the fourth repair, try doing it yourself, it's as easy as opening a PC, just smaller, just follow z3c repair guides and youtube, when you're ready. When attempting to repair the phone, for the very first time, do it over hours, maybe over the weekend, and not one sitting.
If you start loosing patience, leave it for a while etc.
[emoji12]
I got so comfortable with opening my phone, I put extra 0.3mm copper plates on the processor and gpu with Cooler Master Extreme Fusion paste etc. Lol.
But it's good to have an already damaged motherboard to work on.

My screen is still working fine. Just lifting.
I do have some old phones I could practice on, assuming they have the same glass sandwich construction.

Z3C LOS Omni Oreo
I put up with my screen for a long time but eventually the glue gave out and I had no choice. It was good, then bad, but ultimately ok.
I didn't have any trouble taking the glass off the first time because the glue was barely hanging on. I had a look and noticed that the headphone jack's glue was also failing. Probably why it was becoming unreliable. I glued that and reseated the screen cable and it worked fine while sitting there so I glued everything on again.
It was a poor first attempt. I had both too much glue (blobs that leaked out) and not enough to actually seal around much of the screen. No problem. I took the glass off again and glued it again. This time I followed the instructions closer and glued the front screen before connecting the ribbon.
The second gluing was good but something with the ribbon was wrong because it only worked when I pressed on the lower part of the screen. Sigh.
Taking the glass off after a good glue was much harder. I finally got the spudger under the glass but I moved it sideways before removing the suction thing. It was too much pressure for the glass. The good news is that it was the rear glass and only the bottom half shattered. I got the rest off and started on the front.
Now that I knew to be more careful, I got the front off OK. Reseat. Test and working. I glued the front on first again, without disconnecting the cable. Tested and working. I glued the half back I had on (covers the camera).
Its working!
I use a case so the back isn't even a problem, but I ordered a new back from China (cheap). The headphone Jack seems better. I put a new screen protector on. In some ways the phone is rejuvenated.
I was apparently not careful enough when taking off the screen though. I appear to have some marks on my screen now. It's minor, probably won't notice during normal use, but there if you look.
I'm so glad to have my phone back. I've been using an iPhone for the last 3 weeks.
Thanks for the tips.
Edit: The hands free speaker works again too. Bonus
