Hello everybody!
I upgraded my Z to JB yesterday (v. 10.3.A.0.423). Before the update, with 4.1.2 i used to connect apple's earpods and they worked perfectly.
After the update i plug them in and it doesn't recognize them, it completely ignores them and the sound goes through the speakers.
If i plug in the headphones that came with the device they work without a problem.
Is there any solution othen than a software downgrade?
Thanks in advance!

Do not use Apple product on your Android phone, HERETIC!
Or check if your earphone works on anothr phone to be sure that they works, just in case. That's weird they do not work after the update, earpods are earpods, the phone doesn't detect the mark of it.
same problem

I have the same problem, and NO, your solution isn't really helpful, I'd want the choice to be able to use my earphones on any type of device (imagine if we were tied to same brand for everything:crying:!).
This sucks bad, I hope someone finds a fix.
P.S: My earpods work perfectly on every other device except my XZ!
It seems others are having problems as well - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340877
Strange that some are detected and others are not.

Just to be clearer, I'm not personally having a problem as I use the earphones that came with the phone and don't have others to test with.
Was just chipping in with evidence of other people experiencing the same behaviour

Yep i was answering to guybrush50 but i've quoted you by mistake lol
Anyway that's really odd, i think that some Apple earpods have some kind of restrictions or something that doesn't works on JB 4.2.2
The apple earpods i've tried was for iPhone 4S but worked perfectly on my Z

My Apple Earbuds that I've used since my Iphone 3GS are fine. Are you sure you are plugging them in all the way? Mine need to be pushed in a little harder than I would have thought.
I am also on 4.2.2
They should work but honestly apple earphones aren't really that good. Why use them? They are basically cheap headphones just overpriced. I can get much better ones for less. Just saying. And year try maybe pushing them in Harder or try using different once. If they work then that's the issue. Try the Sony earphones they should work if they don't either then something is going on with ur phone.

Compared to the sony earphones that came with the device, they are much louder and have a more crisp sound IMHO.
Anyway using Apple earpods on a sony Xperia Z is nearly troll, just use the one with your phone or buy real quality earpods.
well i have the same problem too, except i'm not using other type of brand for headphone/headset.
i'm using Sony Playstation Wireless Stereo Headset using stereo cable included in it.
before upgrading my xperia z to 4.2.2, it work wonders.
after upgrading just yesterday, my headphones didn't recognized to my phone at all, the output sound is the external speaker on the phone
they didn't work when i switched on the headphone (there are on/off switch on the headphone), but that's because i want to fully experience the high quality sound when it's on and the output sound would be the external speaker on the phone.
sadly when it's off switched, the headphone works well but using standard quality sound. the bass won't come out...:crying:
what is happening with the upgrade, Sony???
Y U not recognized ur own brand headphone???

Well I don't use the sony ones either but what I am saying is if the sony ones work on the xperia z and the apple ones not then u know it has to do with them. I can imagine apple made them so that they don't work right on other devices other then apple devices. It would not surprise me as I am working for Apple and they really do everything to not make there stuff work outside of the apple economy. Sadly. I had that problem with the HTC earphones that where the beats one. They didn't work proper either on other cellphones beside the HTC ones. Strange but htc told me that that is because of the volume and skip buttons on the headphones and also the hands free speaking capabilities. It seems that those often have issues being properly compatible with other cellphones. For example the sony ones work fine for music on other phones but it doesn't work for the hands free part. I know it is strange but I guess htc sony Samsung apple all use a different technology in that regard maybe?

You find that with other headsets, particularly hands free, when you push the button, you can hear fine... Once let go, Sound either fades or mutes!

I have the same issue.
My earphones from the iPhone 5 do not work since the update from Sony.
this is really stressing me out as the shape of the earphones from the iphone 5 is really great and sit lovely in the ear.
Can't believe google/android can be so petty to stop this with an update.
it's a joke to be hones.

I think this is happening to unlocked, unbranded xperia z's
my wife has the same phone as me locked on three and the headphones work absolutely fine for her. she has the same firmware and android version so the only thing that I can think would cause this is the update from Sony themselves and not the one supplied by the carrier.
i've sent an email to Sony regarding this and will wait their response.

Mine are Shure SE 215!
I found out that playing and pausing audio with any Audio Player does stop the noise signal after some seconds. Sometimes it also stops by itself. Very strange problem, did not experience it with my old Xperia S.
To me that sound similar to desktops. When you plug the speakers in the back. You hear the distortion before its in 100%.
Not sure what that is but doesnt seem to affect anything. Do yiu have any water in the headphone hole?
Maybe its the phones metal inside. Could be dust? Maybe something in there thats interfering with the headphone jack. Give it a good blow. Or a brush that can get in there.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4
The Distortion appears directly after plugging in the jack and stops after some seconds or upon pausing the audio. This is without touching or moving the cable, so it does not have something to do with the mechanical connection.
EDIT:
Ok I found something out: The noise just appears when using earphones with a standard connector with 3 lanes (Ground, Left and Right Channel). When using a headset with 4 lanes (Ground, Left, Right, Mic) there is no noise signal. Tried it with both a Sony and an Apple headset (no noise) and my Shure earphones (noise)
I have no clue why it behaves like this, though.
Could be a cheap way for them to make you spend more money on headphones.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4
My Shures were definitely more expensive than the headsets I tested 3 vs 4 lanes is not a quality sign it's just so that a headset needs the 4th connector for the Microphone signal (correct me when I'm wrong).
I have similar issue on brainwavz B2 but that weird sound is gone after a while...
Looks like Im not alone on this issue. I have problems with Shure se210 and westone 4r.

Good idea, but it does not help. Also tried deactivating Smart Connect and rebooting, but there's still noise when plugging in the jack.
This really annoys me! Especially because it just happens with normal earphones and not with headsets, so it probably is not a hardware bug.

No, it has nothing to do with moving the device (and there definitely are no vacuum tubes in a mobile phone xD). But I am not sure if that was your question.

Same issues with headphone jack
Hey guys I'm experiencing exactly the same noise with my headphone jack on my Z1.

I have problems with jaybird bluebuds x :crying:
Well this is disturbing. I was hoping this kind of crap would have been sorted out by now. I posted a longer rant on another review of the Z1 on Engadget, but here's a snippet of what I wrote,
"I had a really bad experience with a Sony MD player. had a sharp md player, that I bought in Japan, and that thing was awesome. It did everything I wanted it to, It was pretty and sleek and I loved it. It died in a car wreck. Back in the states, I got a Sony to replace it. (only available brand at the time) Twice, I had to return it for a manufacture's repair because the headphone port kept crapping out and creating static on the headphones. The stupid retailer tried to convince me it was my headphones but I tried multiple pairs. The thing was a piece of garbage. Ever since then, I've had a bit of a sour taste regarding Sony's audio products. "
The problem you all are having seems a bit better, at least the static goes away after a couple of seconds. On my MD player, it would go away but then come back if I adjusted the headphones at all inside the jack, and sometimes without provocation. Has anybody noticed that the problem persists beyond a couple of seconds after the headphones are plugged in? If it does, It might just be the same flaw in Sony's headphone jack design. It's abhorrent to me, that a company that built its brand on audio fidelity is also the only company with which I've ever had a problem with something as simple as a headphone jack. I hope that this is the exception rather than the rule with these phones, because I still really want one. I guess one potential solution is to just use bluetooth headphones instead, but this doesn't solve the potential hardware problem, It's just a work-around, and when you pay that much for a flagship device, you shouldn't have to work around anything. The hardware should work flawlessly.
oops.. I ranted again.

This is the reply I got from Sony Mobile:
Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulties finding headphones to work with your Sony Xperia Z1.
The Sony Xperia Z1 uses a CTIA headphone jack and therefore will only be compatible with other CTIA headphones. As Sony do not test there phones with Third Party Manufacturers, such as Shure and Westone, we can not confirm that they use the same connectivity. You would need to speak to the headphones manufacturers to find this information.
The headphones and headset models which are compatible for your phone are listed below:
MH750
MK200
MW1
SBH20
MBH10
SBH52

Just got our Z1 just last night. Humbly asking other Z1 C6903 owners if they have the same problem where the speaker really under-performs (sound quality is really really bad), for me at least comparing it to the iPhone 5, LG G2, and the S4 personally. The speaker is like from a low-end phone - makes the songs, etc. sound really really bad!
If there's a fix for this, please let me know.. Thanks!

the earpiece is where the LED light is, at the very upper edge of the phone. You need to put the phone slightly below your ears to have very good sound (not below your whole ear, make the edge of the phone to the middle of your ear, easier to move it down while the other side talking until you get the best sound). I remember it took me a while to figure it out the first day I got the phone.

there are couple of settings you could play with to improve the sound quality. The water-resistance of this phone reduced the loudness of the speaker, but you could try un-checking the Clearaudio+>go to sound enhancements>settings>check xLoud and try with and without Clear phase. Also try to modify the equalizer to your taste. When I compared my Z1 with my wife's SGS4, I can't see much differences, the SGS4 is a bit louder but that doesn't make the sound of the Z1 very very bad unless you have a defective unit.

Speaker Issue
The Z1 has two halves for the bottom speaker though covered by the mesh you wouldn't be able to differentiate. However only one half is the speaker. The other half is the microphone I am guessing. (Correct me if I'm wrong about this) How I figured this out is when I covered both halves individually while playing music. After the KitKat update my major issue has been the ringtones and notifications playing thru the earpiece rather than the speaker which makes it practically impossible to notice the phone is ringing. Anyone experiencing this?
a friend of mine has this problem after 4.4 ftf flash, if i reboot the phone everything is ok , sound plays corectly, but after a few calls and notifications, everything plays on earpiece

Hello ,
I have bought a Z1 recently and came to know that the loudspeaker volume is lower than its predecessors. I saw the speaker grill , though its wider only one half of the area works. What does this mean? The volume coming out is a mono channel? Or can we expect sony to deliver an update to enable the other speaker if it exists!!. But i think there is another speaker which is not enabled !
Anyone else observed this? Or i just got a faulty piece :crying:

One thing to mention is that the efficiency or the loudness of the phone is limited because of the waterproofing, it does not let sound escape as well as other phones.

Mine is way louder than my Xperia z , speaker placement is also better I don't constantly cover the speaker when watching a youtube video. My xperia Z was probably the worst speaker I have ever had, couldn't hear S**T. As mentioned the waterproofing will affect it a bit but it is much improved over it predecessor IMO

I think there is a service menu dial *#*#7378423#*#* on the phone key pad.
This should allow you to test many functions.
There's a theory that early manufactured devices have a touch screen issue - when flat or when charging responsiveness is wrong.
As far as I can tell the issue with c5302 is that the Play store doesn't properly recognise it and it's possible you won't be able to install some games (I suppose this might be a regional licencing issue?)
Apart from that all the usual stuff - people sometimes try and sell water damaged phones second hand that have 95% functionality - so make sure it can make calls, connect to data, connect to wifi, that the internal SD is recognised by the phone and by a PC you connect it to and that it accepts external SD cards and also recognises them.
hi iam using my xperia sp two months right now, facing touch screen problem as said above, and also overheating problem. pls check this two points. everything else ok, this two things make me very irritating and angry, in my point of view this two you must be check first.
c5306
I have 2 weeks with my SP (c5306), it came with a very old firmware (12.0.A.1.234) but it hasn't the two issues you mention (flat surface issue and overheating (42C max with heavy gaming), although it does have a lot of issues regarding WiFi drops and bipolar WiFi Direct connectivity.
How do i check the screen touch problem ?
