[Q] Xperia Z1 overheating and bad battery - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
It's been sometime since I last posted (from the Xperia X10)
I was originally completely psyched out at this Z1 that I got it straight away!
However I have a few major disappointments at this phone:
a) the battery life is horrible. I have to use stamina mode to get it to last a whole day, and that takes away the "smart"phone features... Push notifications? bye.
b) OVERHEATING. THIS THING OVERHEATS LIKE A B****. Any solutions to this?
Do I have a bad device? Should I flash the generic Australia firmware or should I just stick to my own one?
Do any of you have this horrific overheating problem?
Regards

how long the screen was on for?
also, can you press on the graph and take screen shot and post it here (just to see what was on for how long) such as wifi, screen ..etc

I have also noticed that there are three occasions where the battery level suddenly drop (where the white lines are). I think your battery needs calibration

Hi how do you calibrate it?
Do you run it down to the min, wipe some stay thing? Gahh it's been a long time since I've used an android
Okay ill screenshot that too, but I just charged my phone so Ill have to wait for a full days worth of usage before giving you that.

I have the same problem....if I startup any Android game like "Despicable me" after 5-10 mins it'll heat up so much....
The battery isn't bad but it should be better for a 3000mah battery.

Yeah... I play 5 minutes of clash of clans and I think I can fry eggs with my phone (joke) but still.
It's really annoying I miss my clash of clans, but I don't want to overheat my phone (otherwise I might screw up the battery). I mean the battery is bad enough, without us overheating it and damaging it even more?

Yeah... maybe there is some sort of fix like flashing another ftf or something..... does anyone have any other suggestions to what we could do?

What about the new firmware update rolling out that just started a couple of days ago? I'm pretty sure I read that it contained some performance tweaks. let's just hope they contain the important ones.
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I still have a nice 63% on my battery but this is after 5 mins of clash of clans and allowing it to for 2 minutes:
So you guys are also having the same problems?

Its quite strange
I play GUN PROS 2 and the phone used to heat up after ~40 minutes, which is quite good (I don't play that much anyway, 30 mins is just about enough). but now after flashing the new update (that started rolling out couple of days ago) the phone is even better, at about 40mins the phone starts to get warm (not hot). You might need to try flashing this update.
The problem might be with clash of clan itself as people here complaining about heat when using it, try other game and see if the issue still there.
One more solution, I read somewhere in this forum that someone underclocked his Z1 from 2.2 to 1.7 and got rid of heat without affecting the performance, you need to look for it in the general section, I haven't tried it because I don't have any issue with the phone heating up though. Keep in mind that you need root and you are responsible if something goes wrong.

If I flash the new update using flashtool will it wipe all my stuff?
I already have so many awesome photos taken with this phone.

Thanks ahomad.
you make a very valid point. [I already have setCPU and here is my stats]:
Maybe i should underclock... I'll wait for root on the new rom before I upgrade.
I use conservative (i.e. only really ups the CPU frequency when required so yeah..)
I don't have a custom kernel yet.
Well, the device becomes pretty warm when I just browse the net / do that sort of stuff, but nothing like the 50+ degrees experienced by playing clash of clans after 15 minutes. I should play a few other games and check... I'll play guns pro soon, probably on sunday or monday and I'll report back. Seriously, playing clash of clans is pathetic.
Another random thought... perhaps I should specifically underclock the phone when I'm playing clash of clans?
The battery life seems better today however...

Umm, I think you might have to wipe data because there are alot of complaints about instability and crashes when the data is not wiped.
So do a backup first!

you can flash it and uncheck wipe data so you will get the new update without losing anything. Regarding pictures, if they stored in SD card, you won't lose them even if you wiped data.

I flashed the new update without wiping data and I don't have any issue. The battery, camera and performance overall has improved. But I do agree, you better backup anything before flashing new rom in case you made mistake and forgot to uncheck wipe data or error occured while flashing and had to wipe everything.
I suggest you backup and flash the new rom without wiping data and if you have any issue just flash it again and wipe everything then restore whatever you want.

try and report back, I would suggest trying both, underclocking and trying other games just to know what is the issue. But I wouldn't underclock the device for specific app or game as this means the frequency of your cpu will change whenever you open the app and change back when you close it which (changing the frequency so often) might hurt the chip in the long run. I am not expert in this area but this is what I heard.
from what you posted, you have quite decent battery (I can't really tell until I know how long the screen was on for) but almost 17 hours with what look like fairly heavy use and you still have %20 is very good to me (you played games, wifi on, weak signal which drain more battery as the phone tries to look for better tower ...etc). and with the new update the battery will improve even more.

I just tried playing clash of clans with the CPU underclocked. I capped it at 1036mhz and while the game loaded much slower there wasn't that much difference in the performance. The battery peaked at 40 degrees after 15 minutes of game play so all good
perhaps high CPU usage is the culprit.
Also that 16 hour battery was because I really didn't even touch my phone throughout the day... If I touch it occasionally, the battery lasts for 6 hours.
Also that was on stamina mode which I really don't like. It defeats the purpose of a "smart"phone
Do you have root after the new firmware update?

No, it won't damage the battery. But it sounds like you have some app hogging the CPU. Try running GoPower for more detailed CPU and battery usage reports.

Again, install GoPower. Find out what the real culprit is. For me it's now 8pm and my battery is at 63%, with lots of whatsapp, facebook, etc.

Whilst I agree, the battery life is somewhat disappointing - it is to be expected from a Smart Phone clocked at 2.2Ghz, it's essentially a mobile powerhouse.
For those of you worried about heat...
Within the SYSTEM partition is an app called 'com.sonyericsson.psm.sysmonservice' which is in fact an 'Overheat Control' application - To my knowledge, it will decrease the clock speed of the device to prevent overheating, and in some extreme cases will restart the device.
Since the manufacturer has included something to prevent overheating it sounds like the chances of overheating occurring are somewhat likely, but in my opinion the device is safe for at least a year - If it were to completely crap out from excessive heat Sony would have to replace the device under warranty.

Can I ask a dumb question? I read a lot of reports about this phone overheating, yet I've never heard anyone list symptoms other than the phone feeling hot. Yes, it feels extremely hot to the touch after gaming or adding the dinosaur effect to your photos (lol), but has the phone ever shut down or noticeably throttled?
Mine gets very hot, but I wouldn't say it is overheating until something happens like an app crashes or something of that nature? I'm just wondering if you guys have experienced any instabilities related to the heat, or if it is simply feeling too warm for comfort?

Post-Update Battery

((Please leave out any discussions about the "dangers" of updating in this thread))
So I updated via the leaked OTA 3 days ago and all is well so far. My battery has definitely improved by two fold (doubled). Prior to update my D3 would only go about half a day on light usage. Now it goes past 24 hours easy and could most likely push 36 hours (light use, wifi on 24/7).
However today I actually have been using my device quite a bit. Nothing heavy, really just organizing home screens and other duties of the sort.
So I look into my battery usage and after 6 hours my battery is at 40-50% with the display consuming a large amount of the battery. Brightness is at Automatic and the display itself has been on for 3 hours while using 50% of the battery. Is this normal or should % usage be more dispered between the running programs? I imagine the way battery usage stats work is that there will always be a program at the top with 40-50%... but maybe im (dead) wrong?
Also, how has your battery been since update?
(TL; DR) Display is raping my battery post-update, sup?

Edit: Dunno why the pics came out blurry, its fine in my system. Btw im using the (official) extended battery
Divide by zero, I dare you...
...Battery just hit 5% after 8 hours and 4 hours of display on. It unbelievably dropped from 15% to 5% with no brightness in less than a half hour, oh and I was in airplane mode. Literally all I've been doing since I turned my phone on today is have music playing and tweak my homescreen settings.
On standby the battery kicks ass but wow if I actually want to use my phone, the battery is as good as dead.
Im going to try out the standard battery that came with my D3 tomorrow and see if I get better results. Maybe its just my extended battery that's faulty.
If that fails then there has to be something wrong with the way my display draws juice from the battery... and ill probably have to get a replacement ... fml ... those crappy refurbed phones.
Divide by zero, I dare you...
Battery life for me is mostly improved. I say mostly because in weak coverage areas this thing destroys battery life fast! 20% or more per hour kind of fast. Still better than stock, but not much in weak coverage.
Strong coverage areas, phone is much improved for battery life. Seems to be a baseband issue. Hint hint Moto.
What I have noticed the most, is that my data roaming enabled setting actually sticks now, even if i lose coverage. For me, that was one of the biggest things against this phone. It made my data so impossible to stay connected, it almost wasn't woth having.
I too have the official Moto extended battery, but i still struggle to get 24 hours out of my device with very mild usage. For example, i am at 15 hours now, no wi-fi usage, no bluetooth usage, both off, cdma mode only and display on time of 23 minutes total for that time. I'm now at 15%.
My other phones, 2 Eris, and 1 Inc2, get anywhere from 2.5-4 days on this kind of use. I am thinking about ditching this battery monger for an Inc2 until Moto gets their shnizit together, or CM7 is available via a custom recovery and unlocked bootloader.
I am loving having my data available without needing to recheck the data roaming box 100 times a day, and other fixes. I am glad i used the leaked update, as my phone was close to a brick without it anyhow.
Now all we need is the new soak test update to ensure we're official...my gut tells me we are.
Anyone else having issues with Swype predicting in Spanish after the leaked update was applied? Only happens in one app for me, so far.

Lol the thing is I live in NYC so there are no weak coverage areas except the subway and I put my phone in airplane mode during those times.
Im sure we wont have any problems updating when the new OTA hits (whether through legit ways or otherwise)

The battery icon is misleading after the update. 60% - 70% reads more like 80% or 90%

Yes.
The battery stats (system reported percentage) appear unchanged, it's just the rendering of the stock icon that seems to be different.
*EDIT*
I use Battery Circle, as it reports in increments of 1%. I'm sure there are others.
Post-update, my battery usage has been noticeably improved. Before updating, it seemed that my battery drained at about the same rate regardless of how much or how little I actually used the phone (excepting major battery hogs, like fancy games or navigation). Now, the drop, when not being used, is significantly slower compared to before. Battery drain when actually using the phone seems about the same. So, overall, I'd say the processes like phone idle and cell standby have been optimized to great success.
-SR-
PS: "Display" now consistently lands at the top of the usage list, as is to be expected, and is much more believable than before the update.

Totally agree. My battery seems about the same if I actually use my phone but on standby my phone lasts like a champ.
I tried using my standard battery today and it lasted half as long as my extended one. Still, I doubt there's anything physically wrong with my phone... I guess batteries just suck all around lol

Any repercussions? I heard freezing the task manager can have adverse effects on your phone. Also by how much did your battery increase, Im trying to see if taking the risk is worth it. The app is called taskmanager.apk I assume?

That's with 85% left.
Also, I love that the battery symbol is fixed now. It pissed me off seeing the battery lose a bar when it hit 94%. Threw me off so bad.

REALLY bad battery life, is this normal?

Heya,
I've used my One for a few hours now, I'd say moderately heavy use (checked facebook/twitter, downloaded some apps, watched a few youtube video's, played Dungeon Hunter 4 for 30 minutes or so, checked flipboard).
I'm amazed by the poor battery life, especially since all the reviews were so positive. Will it get better? Could I have a faulty battery? This is nowhere near the 14 hours people have been talking about...

you can't tell yet. @Zepid, look for better battery stats xda edition and install it and post the screenshot for kernel and partial wakelocks, other and process.
It's hard to really tell with the default battery monitor, try BetterBatteryStats or GSAM from a full charge and go from there.
Also turn Power Saver on. It limits the CPU to 1.1GHz, and won't even affect gaming performance, or anything else for the matter except benchmarks. Click on the Power Saver option to customize what gets turned on/off.
You should check out the thread that talks about battery saving tips. It helps a lot and make sure you install a custom Rom such as trickdroid.
It's very battery efficient.

Don't forget that if you install a custom ROM, you'll need to root your One. That also means loosing your warranty

DH4 is a beast on battery in my experience. It is hard to play that game and not burn a ton of battery.
Anyway, when I don't play DH4 I still get 5 hours screen time. That's without power saver, auto sync disabled, and Lux adjusting screen brightness. I'm sure if I used power saver I'd get much longer.
Seriously, give it a couple of days!

I have found my battery improved after about a week of having my phone.
Graphic intense games like Dungeon Hunter 4 EATS the battery.
Thanks guys, the Power saving feature definately seems to help, and it's not slowing down the phone at all. I'll give it some time and see if the battery life improves.

You should allow more time, at least 2 or 3 updates, to iron out the biggest bugs. All manufacturers need that time, apple en Samsung too.

[Q] Handset Heating

Hi Guys,
I have been using Xperia SP for the past 3 weeks. But since last week, i found that that mobile started getting heated up if i play some games for 5 mins. Also if i switch on camera and keep it running for 5 mins, mobile started heating up. Heat in the sense i can feel the warmth when i hold my phone. Is this normal? Or anything wrong with my handset? Please help me out guys. I have put the flip cover which Sony has given as free product along with the purchase of this mobile. Any kind of reply is very much appreciated. I am really worried cos of this issue in my mobile.

Its pretty much something you get used to after a while. Also this will help you getting through the harsh winter !!! The highest temperature that i got was 48 degrees C.Pretty hot i know but you have a powerfull processor and graphics that drain the battery thus increasing its temp.
Use CPU Z https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z to monitor your battery temperature if you like.
So you mean to say this is not actually a big problem to worry about? Or do I need to take my mobile to the service centre for a quick check? Please suggest me.
Can't make any guarantees but it's generally not a problem unless it's getting hot when you're doing nothing. If the device cools to between 20 and 25 degrees once you've stopped activity there's nothing wrong.

ditto,
havent seen a single phone that doesn't get Hot when playing games, especially ones which use the GPU/CPU a lot
on the whole it stays pretty cool under normal use compared to other phones.

Right my friend has a Huawei phone and it was steaming hot today after a game session. Mine top temp was 48.5 C
As said above if cold down afterwards your device is ok.

Dont worry the phone heats when u use graphic intense games.
Thanks a lot guys for your replies! I was actually worried about this heating and thought of approaching the nearby service center. Now i am ok with this! Thanks once again..

Android OS is absolutely murdering my battery

Any thoughts on what's going on here? I've done a bit of googling around and I can't seem to find anything definitive.

I'd say 13 hours sitting at 50℅ is great. How much battery life do you normally get? Or what do you expect to get?

You wouldn't happen to be running GEL or a variant of it, would you? I'm having the same issue and I'm running GEL and I think that's causing the "wakelock" that makes Android OS appear as a battery hog.

Sitting at about 1:45 screen-on time, which is pretty damn good. Today was actually a better day, other days have been much worse.

Yes, I am running GEL--interesting. Might switch over to Apex or something and see how tomorrow goes.
I've been running GEL and I keep getting mixed results. I'm about ready to try something else.

I'm going to do the same. When I first ran 4.4 on my phone I hit 3.5 hrs screen on time no problem. Now I'm hitting like 1.75-2 which isn't bad but isn't the 24 hour battery Moto says

Android OS will appear to take all kinds of battery when the phone isn't doing anything..... But after you rack up some good screen time it "usually" drops way down in the percentage. Your screen shot shows you haven't used the phone much... So Android OS will be high.... Cause not much else has been using battery.

After a bit of Googling around I'm wondering if maybe the culprit is GEL's "Ok Google" voice prompt? Apparently it can cause some wakelocks and it's redundant on our phone anyway.

Well I had nearly two hours of screen-on at that point so I wonder what much phone use is to you? And even if it drops relative to the screen it's still consuming a lot of power absolutely.
Also it appears that "Android OS" isn't any one process but "Provides basic operating system services, message passing, and inter-process communication on the device." So the actual culprit might be hard to track down if it's a rogue program routing its wakelocks through Android OS.

As I understand it, the percentages shown for each entry will always total 100%. If the only process using your battery was the OS, then it would show 100%. That would not mean the OS is a battery hog. Just that of all the possible users of the battery, the OS was currently the only one.
A better way to evaluate the total battery picture is to determine the overall drain per hour. In the example shown above, you are draining at an average rate of 3.5%/hour. Since Android is shown as 26%, that means Android is using the battery at an average rate of 0.92%/hour.
By comparison, I have every background process disabled that I can easily disable. I show a standby drain of about 1.2%/hour. Android is showing currently a discharge rate of 19%. That translates to a discharge rate of 0.228%/hour for a phone in standby with nothing going on. Doesn't sound too bad to me.... Android in your actively used phone is using the battery at a rate of about 3X that of mine in standby.

Yup. My phone is debloated to crap, Greenified and everything Motorola related is frozen... Except active notification. I get great battery life and my overnight, untouched phone standby is around 1 percent per hour.
I'd say that's pretty good. I've seen better idle loss than mine, tho can't explain how they got that... I've compared with others and with similar setups, they just get better idle loss for some reason. But I can live with my 1 percent per hour because I still get well over 24 hours total battery life and 5 to 6 screen on hours.
By the end of my battery life my "Android OS" is usually around 10 percent in gsam. Half way through my charge it's usually double that. But it lowers as time goes on.

Interesting that my 1.2%/hr standby drain is almost as low as yours. I am not rooted or greenified. I just made sure nothing except contacts and calendar auto-syncs. I also use DS Battery Saver to put most apps to sleep and turn off data and WiFi when the phone is in standby.
I have been avoiding trying to root due to the complex process and possibly creating issues. It looks like maybe it would not buy me much better battery life than I get now.

You don't have to root to have good battery. But for those having issues, you usually have to have root to do anything about it. Lol
The "should I root" debate goes beyond battery reasons tho. Getting rid of ads, removing system apps you don't want, doing proper backups, seeing what your battery is doing indepth (since you need root on 4.4 to do that), customizing your ui..... All benefits of rooting. And controlling your battery drain also.
Some people seem to have great battery out of the box.... And some don't. So if yours is good, and none of the above matters to you, then there's probably no reason to root.
Greenify is more helpful for stopping apps that like to come on after certain events, or stay on after you use them. Like maps for example. You can make it a user app with titanium backup and greenify it so it stays off when you don't need it. Another example, games. Allot of games run on their own and take a toll on your battery. You can hibernate them and make sure when you aren't playing them, they stay off.
But like I said... As far as battery goes...... If your battery is great unrooted, then no need to root for that reason.
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
I rooted regardless. Even though my battery life is excellent. I wanted Ad block, and the circular battery percentage without widgets. Maybe a few other things, but I like the control you have with root. So I will always do it.

I have found that when I leave intelligent voice commands on, android OS keeps eating my battery because the phone never really enters in deep sleep, I guess it's because it needs to be awake for the command to work
When I disable it, the battery really gets improved, with voice commands on I get 1% drop per hour overnight, with it turned off, I am able to get by 8 hours with 0 to 1% drop.
Also, if I have voice off but 3g/4g/wifi on, even if I don't get notifications, my phone do not enter in deep sleep, it goes back to the 1% drop per hour.
On the daily usage, I didn't see much of a difference between localization on neither of the 3 options (high accuracy, battery saving and the other one), but I noticed a slight difference between Google Now on and off.
In the end, I get a great battery life without voice commands and google now, once I got 2 days and a few hours with light to moderate usage (3g and wifi on all the time, almost 4 sot, some browsing, whatsapp, facebook, a few phone calls and photos), but it comes to the point that I could have any other phone to have the basic android function and get a great battery life, the point for which I got the moto x are those great features at the price of some battery, c'est la vie, with all those things on I am still able to get through the day, so I'm really happy with it, even the android OS having a huge battery consumption.
I had to freeze Motorola SLPC service (and related processes) to stop from having so many CPU wakeups. I greenify'ed one or two things but they honestly weren't really responsible for the problem. It's all those damn cpu wakeups. Basically froze all things Moto (except for AD, TC, and Assist) and it seems to have gone away. I even set my network accuracy back to high (some people stated that leaving it on Device Only was the only non-battery killer).
At this point, I'm thinking I'll return the X and keep the N5. The Moto X situation on XDA is looking to become another Rezound situation (where none of the users think there's anything that needs improving on the phone and development is non-existent short of bounties and flamewars).
For the first time, I wish I could have the OEM OS with just a few CM/other ROM cherry picks. As it is now, I don't even have a recovery image on the phone. I could live with that, except that I can't flash anything to the phone and Xposed only goes so far.
Currently can't have dbm in status bar, no Voice+, no encrypted messaging. Moto Assist doesn't turn on BT when in driving mode which is a shame because my car is my BT trusted device, speaking the PIN to unlock my phone seems to just get the voice command sequence stuck..

Nexus 6 gets really hot

Well my Nexus 6 has started getting really hot even with moderate usage. Its not like it burns my hand but it gets uncomfortable at times and it worries me.
If I'm just browsing on chrome, checking out Facebook, or playing a simple game like Crossy Roads, the phone starts getting really warm and after a while its really hot. Even when on WiFi it becomes hot. I have to close all the apps and leave it for a while so that it cools down. I don't have a lot of apps open all the time and I have a lot of memory remaining.
I can't really figure out what's the problem, any suggestions?
Thanks.

+1 Facebook application consumes extreme amounts of battery and system resources. That would be my first suggestion as well. Uninstall Facebook and see if you notice an improvement.
It would be easier to suggest something if you let us know if you are stock or have been playing with roms/ kernels and their settings.... I have seen other phones get hot with too aggressive kernel settings.....
first off, what cpu temperature ate you talking about? secondly, feel does not give you am accurate temperature reading, all its does is show you if something is hotter, or cooler, than your hand. thirdly, your phone can get up to 99C in temp. at 100C, the boiling point of water, your phone would automatically shut down to cool off. now while using your phone, especially when using the cpu hard, it will get hot. but that is normal. you own a quad core phone with a 2.65ghz cpu. do you really expwct it to stay cold?
Thanks for the suggestions.
I'll try uninstalling Facebook and getting back to you. I've already uninstalled Facebook Messenger.
My CPU temperature is around 41 degrees Celsius and when it gets warm to the point that its uncomfortable is around 58-60 degrees Celsius.
In know it has a really powerful cpu but I don't always want to be holding a device that is warm to the point that it becomes uncomfortable.
Also I haven't even attempted rooting or changing the kernels so its all stock.

58-60C is VERY normal, when using the phone. so maybe a powerful phone isnt right for you.
But is it normal to feel warm? Even though its powerful shouldn't it stay cool? Is this happening to every Nexus 6 user? Sorry for the influx of questions

again, feel osnt an accurate way to kudge temperature. if your hand is cooler, the phone will feel more hot. your phones temp also is dependent on the air temp around you. as if its warmer outside, then the phone will get warmer. but yea, every nexus can and will get that warm. and at times, will get even warmer! try plugging in to a charger and streaming a movie. in this situation, ive seen my phone hit 74C. but thats normal as well. unlike deaktop computers, our phones dont have fans blowing to keep the cpu cool. we rely on an inactive way to keep our phones cooler, so its normal for the more powerfully phones to get warm, and even hot.
Try this.
I was having overheating issues. When gaming, charging, or just about anything other than the phone at an idle. I cleared the cache in recovery. That's it. I did not uninstall anything or modify anything in any way. And now I do not have those issues. Is that what fixed it? I do not know. Will it work for anyone else? I do not know that either. But, I'm pretty sure that if you can clear the cache with your stock recovery, it won't hurt anything. Maybe you will get lucky and it works. Bonus benefit, battery life improved for me as well. Maybe 20% better. I hope it helps you as much as it did for me.
Good Luck.

No, what is odd is that I posted my experience with a similar issue on my Nexus 6 from at&t, and now I am responding to this.
But, fine.
I prefer not to beat around the bush. So, if you want to say it's not possible? Ok. that's cool. Think I am lying? That's fine as well. Heck I probably am. Just disregard the whole thing. It isn't important. at all. I wish I had something more meaningful to add. I'm starting to feel a little dirty from spamming up the thread with this. So I am happy to digress first man. And so sorry O.P. Didn't mean to push any buttons and junk up your thread.
Now that that's out of the way. Please try to have a good day.

lol! im not saying youre lying! seriously. im just saying that the behavior that you experienced is odd, considering thermal throttle being there. i actively disable thermal throttle every single time i boot up. and i try, really try, but have not been able to reach 100C on my n6. and i run my cpu at 3032mhz high and low cpu speed. now my nexus 5 reaches shutdown very easy, it takes seconds to get it there. my n6, no matter how hard i push, purposefully, i can not get it to reach 100C. now your reboot might have been something completely different, and you not reaching thermal shutdown. but i doubt you would have known that, because you would need a live cpu temp in your status bar to see if you hit thermal shutdown. and i doubt you have a cpu temp showing in your status bar. i do
If your phone is 55+C while you are not using it very intensely there's a problem.

youre probably looking at the battery temp. battery temp is different. if your battery hits 60C, youll automatically shut down. everyone i know with a nexus 6 sees over 50C cpu temp rather often. well, depending how hard you are using the cpu, and the temp around you.

Well I can't tell you how hot it was getting. But when I played Star Wars Galactic Defender while charging it got really hot, almost too hot to hold. Although I am sure that what I felt was nothing near the boiling point of water, it was enough to make the phone restart. It got hot under the same circumstances with 5.0. Just not that hot. But after the 5.1 update it started getting much hotter. At the time I wouldn't put it on a charger at night because of the crazy heat. After the cache clearing things have been much better. It doesn't even get warm when fast charging.

Partly. Through normal operation with stock interactive governor I sit around 40-50 playing music, opening coc, etc. Phone never feels hot in hand.
When I'm idling or reading something or casually scrolling I'm always sitting 35-40 CPU temp.
Obviously if I crank it up and lock to 2.6GHz and run some CPU stresses I quickly get up to 75C  but that isn't normal operation. Relaxed operation when the CPU is idling should sit pretty low.

using the cpu lightly or it just sitting there wont get it hot at all. listening to music is using the cpu very lightly. if it gets hot just sitting there, then that is a problem. thats usually caused by a process getting "stuck" and the cpu staying a 100% active. so the heat in that situation would be a symptom, but not the problem.
