sorry if it has been posted but I'm posting from my Note 3 so it's hard to search. But will we have full functionality with the Gear if we run AOSP on our phones? Or even better is there a possibility of getting custom roms on the gear? I'm still on the fence on getting the gear or not because I always wind up leaving TW and running AOSP so I was concerned.

I have this very same question, I believe it will be possible to a certain degree..
I own a S4, running CM10.2, Iv downloaded the gear manager apk and installed it on my phone.. it does fail installing the library's, although it does generate the library .apks on the sdcard located in a /Gear directory. So I have been manually installing them.
I believe the call functions will work fine, along with customizing the clock faces, although in terms of notifications etc. I cant be certain..
As for custom roms for the gear, I believe this will be possible in the future. After all the gear does run its own dedicated firmware, so it wouldn't be that hard.
I dont actually own a gear just yet, I may be going out today and purchasing one. If the gear generates enough interest from developers you can bet your ass there will be 100% compatibility with AOSP roms in the future.. You may have to use some third party apps but Im quite certain it will be possible.
Hopefully someone who owns a gear can confirm some of the working features at the moment with AOSP!
Well, for FULL compatibility, you need touchwiz... (or parts of it)

Correct, I see from your signature you own a i9505..
Are you running touchwiz or aosp ?
I'm curious to know if notifications work on AOSP or at least to a certain degree.

Stock touchwiz. will update to 4.3 over the weekend. My guess is that it'll just work as Bluetooth headset like on non-Samsung devices
i don't know if it's impossible but I hope some of our amazing devs find a way to get full functionality with AOSP even if it means using third party apps or using AOSP on the watch also. That is the only reason I haven't brought a Gear yet. Because I know regardless of how many features Samsung added to the note 3 once AOSP roms become available I will be jumping over.

Or just port the relevant apps
It's still a nice watch with out the phone integration though
anyone tried yet ?
i've installed most if not all the apps that have been posted on this forum to a galaxy S4 running AOSP 4.3 so far i have full access to calls and some apps.. evernote, myfitnesspal, easydo, twitter feeds, facebook feeds, and watchstyler. notifications do not work and neither does weather updates. has anyone else had progress on this?

Hey! So our Galaxy S3 received "official" update through OTA in some countries. The update brings 4.3.1 and GG works good with this TouchWiz ROM. However, users started to report lots of bugs and instability in this ROM, and so do I. Samsung decided to cancel it and they will have to work on the ROM again, which I guess won't be released before end of the year, they have been telling us lies for a long time.
So here is my question: which custom ROMs did you get to work? I'm looking for a basic functionality - and that is mostly notifications (through gear getter or ATN), bluetooth answering calls and camera. that's all. i don't need weather, i don't need s voice, but i want custom bluetooth tethering to work.
help?
I couldn't get any customs Roms to work with the gear and my s3. But the leaked 4.3 official worked great.

ah that's a shame. which leaked version are you using? i flashed the one from ireland, and i have to take out battery few times a day, i'm loosing connection all the time. it's really unstable, but i don't want to part with my watch.
Iv had my GG working on my phone for the past month now with S3 and CM rom
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
wait I'm confused, if i were to get the GG and i have pacrom for my s3 and its running 4.3.1 do you think they will work together?
I am using imperium rom v21 with 4.3 and if I use the GM 1.2 posted here it works if I download the app from Samsung app it gives me an error message and I can't use it.
roms
what roms are you guys using to allow for bluetooth tether? i have been throuh a few havent found one that will work..
stockmod rom, s3rx, Dandroid
I thought Null was supposed to open the compatibility issue. Is that rom not working for the Galaxy 3?

Null did allow for it to happen, however the rom on your phone had to have bluetooth tether enabled or the ability to do so, in the US just about all carriers had it blocked
I just tried Cyanogenmod 11 and so far it bluetooth tether is working...not so sure about other features just yet

Well I got the Gear, got it rooted, rooted my S3 but I could not find a definitive guide on how to get BT Tethering enabled on my phone.
Back to stock for me for now. Too bad. I liked the look of the NULL ROM.
Ok, so i'm assuming this is a common question but failed at search and there doesnt seem to be much in terms of FAQ on these subforums.
I've read that the samsung watches only work with samsung phones. is this still the case? what is the point in rooting the watches? does it allow to be used on other brands? does the other phone NEED to be rooted to use it?
many thanks and really sorry if it has been answered many times before.
I've been offered one (i think its the original gear not gear 2) for a decent price but dont know if it'll work on my sony z1 unrooted.
cheers
You really don't even need to search...just read some of the threads
The watch is only fully compatible with devices running android 4.3+ and touchwiz
You can however get a fair bit of stuff working on non touchwiz roms/devices with workarounds

No doubt Android L will becoming to the S5 sometime nearer Christmas, but should they ditch touchwiz in favor of a more stock looking android and give you the option to download things you want ie the camera software, or even a touchwiz launcher should you wish to use it.
Basically making it more like how Motorola works with the Moto X ect.
That way those of us that want a more stock looking setup will be happy as we be able to choose what we want to install, plus it would make it alot better when it comes to updates as won't have to wait nearly as long as we have to do now when a new version or update is released.
Should Samsung go this route, i think it make google happy if they did.

Don`t think thats going to happen i think. They will maybe restyle TW more and make it even flatter and neutral but they will keep adding the features/gimmicks because they think it adds value to android. And thats allright if users only had the option to turn off these features they don`t need that would add real value for most of us.
I don't think Samsung should completely ditch their skin and added software, but they should at least remove some of the useless features and tone it down a little bit. Also a new name would be nice. Touchwiz just sounds awful, I've never been a fan of it.
I come from Sense 5 and I don't dislike touchwiz, it's far better than stock and I don't think Samsung will leave it
As said above as long as you remove it, it's fine. I've always been on Nova Launcher
We must consider Terrain Home as alternative! It's not bad :cyclops:
It won't happen.

Nope, diversity is a good thing a Google stated more than once that it likes what OEMs do with Android.
And no, you can't choose between stock camera and TW camera, "skins" are more like completely different versions of Android.
Plus we all know that what delays updates more is the crap carriers throw on users' heads.

Touchwiz is not just a launcher though. I think touchwiz gets a rough ride due to its past history. I posted a similar post today. Touchwiz used to be bad back in the days of s1. Now though it's actually quite good. It adds a lot of useful features, a lot of which are what effectively makes an s5 an s5.
Remove it and you just have a glorified Nexus. In my opinion if that's what you want you should juts save money and buy one instead of buying Samsung

The fact that you can't move the app button in the dock kills it for me. I have to resort to a third party launcher to get that functionality.
I hate touchwiz but this is obviously a very subjective subject.
I don't like the colours, or the way it sits heavily on top of what is the fastest, cleanest version of android (AOSP)
I personally don't use any touchwiz features either except from quick glance (which is actually more of a hassle than useful so I might just disable it) however I'm running alliance with all the other bloat disabled. I do however like allshare with the way it connects seamlessly to my (Sony!?) TV and suppose air view can be handy when scrobbing through video.
If stock android included allshare and air view I would be set!
No they shouldn't. It's what makes Samsung devices different from other devices, just like how Sense makes HTC devices different from other devices. If you don't like touchwiz, buy another device or flash another ROM or build your own ROM

yea, but that only allows the ability to change the icons in the dock, but not the actuall app draw icon in the dock. That is hard locked to the right.
Honestly they should give out the software as a factory thing, but make the stock AOSP available on their website with all the drivers and junk included. That way people who wanted the stock experience could have that, and people who wanted the TW experience could have that. It would honestly be the best of both worlds.

Because it's your device?
If you're going to sell a device to people, make it so they can do whatever they want with it. Don't tell them " here you go, now you can only do what we want you to do with it" like Apple. That's like saying " you can buy this horse, but you can only ride it with this saddle."... doesn't that seem inherently wrong?
No not when there is a stable full of similar horses with no saddles that people can pay a lot less to go and ride

ya but samsung still has to warranty it, what if your custom software breaks the camera and because there are the drivers out there, you think your phone has a problem
samsung would have had to fix a mistake brought upon by yourself and samsung as a company can not do that, they need consistency, something that they can easily fix if its broken with software they know and approve of. its kind of like modifying a car, if you mod a car, you run the risk of losing warranty, if honda were to warranty cars that blew up because they were modified, honda would go out of business, its basically the same thing here
Hey guys. Need some advice. Got a new galaxy gear 1st edition for Xmas. I have not opened it and am debating returning it. Is this thing worth using at this point or is it already outdated ? I presently have a galaxy s3 which is running a cm kit kat variant. I really would rather not switch to touch wiz to use this device. I'm very familiar with flashing roms so if there is a good rom to flash that makes this device great please let me know.
Is this still a decent device? I have never used a smart watch before so it intrigues me.. However I will most likely be upgrading my phone in February or so. Not sure if I will even be getting another samsung. I honestly do not even have the faintest recollection what I would use a smart watch for. If it is just for notifications, I would rather not use the device. I hardly even use notifications on my phone (only ones enabled are text messages).
Tl;dr: got gear for Xmas. Don't have touch wiz. Should I return this?

It's all up to you whether you would like to keep it or return it.
There is enough information on this board to make up your mind about that.
The only think I can tell, is that I absolutely love my watch and I'm glad I kept it
(I got it for free and hesitated to sell it).
With the Null rom, the watch really is so much better than stock, even though the Android version is outdated (Android 4.2.2).
But, from what I understand, someone is trying to port Android Wear onto our watch.
So when he succeeds, the watch is totally up-to-date again.
But for now, I am already happy with what the watch can do already.
But keep in mind, the main purpose of the watch is to indeed receive notifications which appear on the phone.
Nice benefit is that you can call and receive calls with the watch.
Do notifications work with aosp roms? Or do I need touch wiz?

As I have owned both a S4 and S5, but both of them with TW based roms, I can't exactly tell you.
But I've read that people got it working on AOSP roms or even other brands phones (like Nexus, LG, etc).
Or you can use other software than Gear Manager, like SWApp Link
Anyway, there are possibilities but none of them easier than on a TW rom.
Thanks for your help. I think im gonna return this device and wait until the technology matures more before I decide to jump in. Much appreciated.

I'm considering buying a Galaxy S6. I've barely even used android, but I hate touchwiz already. I hate it for one main reason, the notification tray. I cannot stand that at all. I've looked into a some options for removing touchwiz, such as running an AOSP based rom, but that apparently isn't going to be supported for a while. Is there anyway to get the notification tray to look like a nexus device where a double swipe will get you the toggles? I am currently using an iPhone that has been jailbroken, and have been playing with the SDK. I don't really have a problem building AOSP from source, as long as its relatively simple. If it is not really possible for an AOSP rom to be built on my own, what would an eta be on a AOSP rom for it be?

I don't know of any way to change the notification tray unless you install an AOSP ROM. Which doesn't exist right now. Change home launcher? Of course. Notification tray. Nope lol
Building AOSP from source would be a big challenge as Samsung is known for not providing proper documentation for its Exynos processors. This was the case till the last one, i.e. Exynos 5433. Not sure how it is now. Touchwiz provides a lot of theming options which changes the notification tray.
Please play with one of the phones at a store before considering buying it. Buying it to run AOSP ROMS might be a futile exercise as of now.

The g3 broke my flashing addiction so thats no longer a issue for me but I still want to tweak the ui without heavy modding, Samsung us going to give us that option. They have a theming program that will support the s6 this summer. Maybe hold out until that is released and see what it can and cannot do before you commit to a device.
