Ok, so i'm assuming this is a common question but failed at search and there doesnt seem to be much in terms of FAQ on these subforums.
I've read that the samsung watches only work with samsung phones. is this still the case? what is the point in rooting the watches? does it allow to be used on other brands? does the other phone NEED to be rooted to use it?
many thanks and really sorry if it has been answered many times before.
I've been offered one (i think its the original gear not gear 2) for a decent price but dont know if it'll work on my sony z1 unrooted.
cheers
You really don't even need to search...just read some of the threads
The watch is only fully compatible with devices running android 4.3+ and touchwiz
You can however get a fair bit of stuff working on non touchwiz roms/devices with workarounds

Hey all, I'm seriously considering purchasing this device and I think i should understand more about root on it before I get it. I'm currently using the AT&T HTC One X (evita, dual-core) and I've got a very good understanding of the Android OS and rooting in general, and for HTC devices, but not a grasp on Samsung devices. I've rooted and ROM'd a few in the past for friends, but I still am not 100% on them. So, coming from and HTC device and knowing a lot about android in general my main questions are...
1. How/If there is a way to return to stock android firmware (like HTC's RUU)
2. Is download mode just essentially bootloader mode? HTC does it differently.
3. Any commonly known tweaks/tricks that someone coming from a different company would not know about?
4. Anything else I should know?
Thanks in advance!
Seems the Note community isn't too friendly, I don't have much info for you because I too Come from HTC. I was on Sprint and the forums were much more active / friendly. The Note3 has root, but you can do little More than remove bloat and run ad blocker apps.

Hey, I dont see why there was a comment about this forum being unfriendly. I think so far its one of the best out there. Guys are real appreciative to the devs for giving us root, questions get answered without unneeded comments etc.
To answer your questions i dabbled with several HTC phones and the RUU system was good. Odin is good too but a bit more complicated. There are tutorials which can help though
Like mentioned before some people have had build quality issues but thats gonna be hit or miss like any device. Personally mine hasnt had any issues, though i managed to scratch the bottom of my screen already haha purely my fault though.
Biggest thing coming from HTC is Samsung wont unlock your bootloader like HTC. I really miss the way HTC treats ya like a big boy/girl and let you decide for yourself.
One last thing you should know is this will be the best device youve ever had! Have fun with it! Any other questions lemme know

What else do we really need? I mean you can add tons of stuff via xposed and wanum.. and people are working on themes. Even thought touchwiz blows there's no point in owning this device without the s-pen apps.

sorry if it has been posted but I'm posting from my Note 3 so it's hard to search. But will we have full functionality with the Gear if we run AOSP on our phones? Or even better is there a possibility of getting custom roms on the gear? I'm still on the fence on getting the gear or not because I always wind up leaving TW and running AOSP so I was concerned.

I have this very same question, I believe it will be possible to a certain degree..
I own a S4, running CM10.2, Iv downloaded the gear manager apk and installed it on my phone.. it does fail installing the library's, although it does generate the library .apks on the sdcard located in a /Gear directory. So I have been manually installing them.
I believe the call functions will work fine, along with customizing the clock faces, although in terms of notifications etc. I cant be certain..
As for custom roms for the gear, I believe this will be possible in the future. After all the gear does run its own dedicated firmware, so it wouldn't be that hard.
I dont actually own a gear just yet, I may be going out today and purchasing one. If the gear generates enough interest from developers you can bet your ass there will be 100% compatibility with AOSP roms in the future.. You may have to use some third party apps but Im quite certain it will be possible.
Hopefully someone who owns a gear can confirm some of the working features at the moment with AOSP!
Well, for FULL compatibility, you need touchwiz... (or parts of it)

Correct, I see from your signature you own a i9505..
Are you running touchwiz or aosp ?
I'm curious to know if notifications work on AOSP or at least to a certain degree.

Stock touchwiz. will update to 4.3 over the weekend. My guess is that it'll just work as Bluetooth headset like on non-Samsung devices
i don't know if it's impossible but I hope some of our amazing devs find a way to get full functionality with AOSP even if it means using third party apps or using AOSP on the watch also. That is the only reason I haven't brought a Gear yet. Because I know regardless of how many features Samsung added to the note 3 once AOSP roms become available I will be jumping over.

Or just port the relevant apps
It's still a nice watch with out the phone integration though
anyone tried yet ?
i've installed most if not all the apps that have been posted on this forum to a galaxy S4 running AOSP 4.3 so far i have full access to calls and some apps.. evernote, myfitnesspal, easydo, twitter feeds, facebook feeds, and watchstyler. notifications do not work and neither does weather updates. has anyone else had progress on this?
Since Samsung has had their Android Wear version of their Gear watches announced (and available for order today), what's the odds of that ROM being loaded on our Gear 1 devices? I, for one, have not gone to Tizen yet in hopes of this taking place and it seems like we are on the verge of this happening. I know it will not be an official release, but something where a rooted device would be needed.
I second ur hopes - held off on Tizen for the same reason
Whether or not Android Wear's better than Tizen all depends on which apps you use on your phone. Android Wear (like Google Now) is dependent on using Google's apps and services. Most of what Now reports off of is scraped from Gmail. I don't use Gmail or any Google apps I don't have to so Now and Android Wear are useless to me and those like me. Most corporate/professional users that use MS products, Exchange, and connect to secure networks (which typically limit apps used for personal use) aren't going to be Android Wear candidates.

I'm sure it'll fit perfectly with gear 2. I see the .tar having the drivers for the watch it's a dependent of
I would be very interested in a Wear port too.
As far as I can see, not too many things have changed on the Gear live compaired to the Gear 1.
Sure, the CPU would be faster but the screen and memory size are the same.
Count me in as well, this is where xda shines.... people coming together to contribute to the common goal. Can't wait.

How come every time someone starts a discussion inquiring about possible uses someone else feels the need to chime in why they don't need it? FYI-we don't give a rats ass about ur corporate structure-we want Android wear - go pontificate to ur secretary please

It's a discussion forum, no? Everyone here is a wearables early adopter so are interested in whatever comes next. And not everyone here uses their devices the same way or wants the same things. Other than blind fanbois who clearly have no objectivity, I enjoy hearing people's different views; even if I don't agree with them. Your post added less to this discussion than mine did. People wetting themselves over something no one here knows the functional value of (yet) is the height of fanboi-ism. Android Wear could change the world as we know it. It's going to take more than a five minute conference dog and pony for that to happen.
A discussion by folks who want wear not about discussing why someone doesn't need nor want-not a fan of any particular aspect - just bored with Gear 1-if motor 360 looks good I'll purchase, if not then wait a while
Does it only work with Samsung products, I have an invite for an one plus one I want to know if it'll work with the phone too?

I have been waiting for Android Wear to be released. I believe it would be a wonderful fit for the galaxy gear 1. Let's not forget the functionality of the gear 1 using the Null ROM....android based. Today's conference reiterated how coding would not be that much different for normal Android code. Sounds promising to me.

From earlier discussions and threads I believe Android wear requires a 4.4 based Rom to operate. The Gear 1 Roms and Null Rom are 4.3 based. The real hurdle will be getting a 4.4 Rom on the Gear. The Devs and contributors on XDA are very talented so with this release of the Gear Live maybe they can accomplish it.
I am curious what the battery will be like on the Gear Live with the always on features of Android wear. The screen has to go into some type of low power mode for the 300mAh battery to last through a day. I also have a Qualcomm Toq that I picked up cheap on ebay, that uses a Mirasol Screen and only has a 240mAh battery. I get 4-5 days always on with it (even over night). The Toq has a tiny processor, runs a unique OS, and the colors are not vibrant, but it is a very capable demonstration smartwatch. I think there may be a future for more advanced Mirasol screens.
Anyway good to see some excitement over our Gear 1. I have enjoyed being an early adapter and experimenting with Null and Tizen on the watch. Maybe Android Wear is in our future.
I want to see this. I really need to get off of this touchwiz train. Wear works with any android at least 4.3.
Hey can someone help me unbrick my alcatel one touch evolve tmobile? I tried using adb and sdk but its not working correctly for some reason. It just says closed every time i try to execute a command... :/
Btw i bricked it by editing the build prop
Does watch styler app work w Gear live?

Sorry i was refering to @Mr Ian B's question on watchstyler on Android Wear, didn't realize it could have applied to your original question in the OP. :cyclops:
Android wear was just announced yesterday, so it will probably be a while before devs can get their hands on a device, then another while before we see a port, only after that will we see if other features like watchstyler will be able to be ported onto android wear, should not be a major problem as both are of the same platform.
Personally I cannot wait to see a port of Android wear onto the gear1, I would like to see how my gear1 fares withe the screen on feature:laugh:
Hey guys. Need some advice. Got a new galaxy gear 1st edition for Xmas. I have not opened it and am debating returning it. Is this thing worth using at this point or is it already outdated ? I presently have a galaxy s3 which is running a cm kit kat variant. I really would rather not switch to touch wiz to use this device. I'm very familiar with flashing roms so if there is a good rom to flash that makes this device great please let me know.
Is this still a decent device? I have never used a smart watch before so it intrigues me.. However I will most likely be upgrading my phone in February or so. Not sure if I will even be getting another samsung. I honestly do not even have the faintest recollection what I would use a smart watch for. If it is just for notifications, I would rather not use the device. I hardly even use notifications on my phone (only ones enabled are text messages).
Tl;dr: got gear for Xmas. Don't have touch wiz. Should I return this?

It's all up to you whether you would like to keep it or return it.
There is enough information on this board to make up your mind about that.
The only think I can tell, is that I absolutely love my watch and I'm glad I kept it
(I got it for free and hesitated to sell it).
With the Null rom, the watch really is so much better than stock, even though the Android version is outdated (Android 4.2.2).
But, from what I understand, someone is trying to port Android Wear onto our watch.
So when he succeeds, the watch is totally up-to-date again.
But for now, I am already happy with what the watch can do already.
But keep in mind, the main purpose of the watch is to indeed receive notifications which appear on the phone.
Nice benefit is that you can call and receive calls with the watch.
Do notifications work with aosp roms? Or do I need touch wiz?

As I have owned both a S4 and S5, but both of them with TW based roms, I can't exactly tell you.
But I've read that people got it working on AOSP roms or even other brands phones (like Nexus, LG, etc).
Or you can use other software than Gear Manager, like SWApp Link
Anyway, there are possibilities but none of them easier than on a TW rom.
Thanks for your help. I think im gonna return this device and wait until the technology matures more before I decide to jump in. Much appreciated.
Hey all, so I've been trying to dig around a bit on the forums to find some answers, but alas, couldn't get specific enough information, so thought I'd just make a thread of all my questions lol.
Currently using a Note 5 SM-N920W8, 6.0.1, Stock.
I use Linux, and have no access to a Windows machine, and no desire to make a windows VM plus I doubt I could free up enough hard drive space right now anyways hahaha.
I also DAILY use my Samsung Gear VR.
---
First question: Is there a way to root my phone given my current setup?
Second: I DID read that the gear VR won't work with most custom roms (Like AOSP based ones). Any custom roms that DO WORK (Must work 100% without having to jump through a billion hoops to make it function) with the Gear VR?
Third: Any recommendations of any kind, since I am new to this device, would be appreciated!
<3
I will let someone more qualified than me answer this but I will say I'm glad my Note 5 is my third phone not my main 2 as there is no updates on ROMs for this phone I haven't see anything new in months lol

Even the stock MM Rom runs nice and smooth for me. I just want to root at the LEAST so I can get Viper running...But, I wouldn't mind a better kernel / ROM either, so I can increase my battery life, tweak a few things.
-- Also, Just realized I should have maybe posted in Q&A Rather than general. If a mod wants to move this, cool by me!
bump.
Anyone?
