Chromecast build with OTA updates disabled? - Google Chromecast

Hey!
I want to stream local media files from my pc to chromecast using fling.
I'm now on build 13300 with root/ADB enabled and OTA updates disabled.
So, I would like a Chromecast build (maybe 12840?) with OTA updates disabled.
Can someone give me a link, please?

Won't help. Fling etc. were blocked on the server side. Going back to an older firmware build will not make Fling work again.

but why does the chromecast have to call out to server if your streaming is via your pc to the tv ? cant something be turned off on the chromecast image to allow no connections to the server ? or have your pc emulate a server connection and tell the chromecast to allow your emulated server to connect to it and allow fling ?

That's what I wondered. Assumed it was impossible since nobody did it

The chromecast on boot calls googles server to pull a list of available applications, and with "fling" removed from that list, the chromecast is unable to stream local content. Currently there is no way to disable this feature, and a PC can not emulate google's server call as all traffic is done over HTTPS with signed google certificates.
tl;dr, we can't really do anything until google lets us, which kind of sucks.

DLNA local file video player/server app for HTC 8X?

I'm looking for a video player/server app for WP8 that will allow me to play locally stored files (MP4) from my phone (an HTC 8X) onto a DLNA-capable television. So far I've not found anything that seems to be able to do this, although I thought it would be quite simple (my Nexus 7 has at least half a dozen players that can do it).
Closest I've found was Nokia Play To (set up after spoofing the store into thinking my 8X was a Nokia 925). That app runs OK, but fails to find any DLNA devices, even when connected directly to their hotspot. Also found MyMediaHub, which works fine as a DLNA controller (playing to the renderer from an external DLNA server) but can't play local files. Moliplayer can act as a local renderer (to play files from an external server on the phone via DLNA), but what I want is kinda the other way around, to play from the phone rather than to it.
Are there any players out there which can fulfil this role which will work with the 8X, or am I limited to filling my tablet up with films rather than using my phone for the job (which I'd prefer as they are on there anyway for watching whilst travelling).
The WP8.1 update is supposed to have this ability baked into the OS. Just hold out a few more days, ok a week..

It's a corporate phone, so I may have to wait slightly longer than that, knowing our IT crowd. But it's good news anyway, thanks for the heads-up. I'll keep a check on what does get released with the update, with fingers crossed
There's also Share Box from Samsung (DLNA client that can stream images/videos/music over WiFi). May require proxy trick. Not tried on a non-Samsung phone.

This one also doesn't work on HTC (I've already tried, app failed with "Media service not started" message). Looks like you're out of luck (say "thanks" to HTC for the "great support" and never buy HTC's junkphones again )
P.S. Theoretically, there is no "rocket science" in DLNA server functionality; the only showstopper I see now is the API limitations to access local videos. Hope, with WP8.1 update, some third-party DLNA servers will hit the store...

The OP needs a DLNA server, not a player (there are few DLNA players available at the store).

Not for Windows Phone 8, that is only for WP7.X: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/connected-media/d154a04b-d3ad-47dd-bfc9-a1022e409af6

As I mentioned in my first post - I tried that via a store-spoof to make it think my 8X was a Nokia 925 and serve me Nokia apps for install. The app installs and runs, but it can't find the DLNA renderer, even when connected directly to it. The webpage that details the spoof (using Fiddler2 on a PC as a proxy man-in-the-middle for the set-up process) also reported the same, that Play To installs and runs but can't detect DLNA devices.
As noted, I can find options for DLNA controllers (e.g. MyMediaHub) and DLNA players (e.g. Moliplayer), but what I'm not finding for WP8.0 is a DLNA server app that can see locally stored files. With luck 8.1 could fix this by baking it into the OS, so I will wait patiently until it filters down through our IT boys and their testing.

[Q] Why root the chromecast ?

Hi
I've a question
Why root the chromecast ?
You're on xda, so I'll offer my favorite answer.
Why not?
because I should buy a usb otg Y cable and I will not necessarily have the last update right ?

If its ever been updated or it was purchased recently it not rootable through a y cable. You are gonna have to rip it apart and JTAG it. The only real benefit I can see of rooting it these days is region blocked content. But there are ways to do that through a router.

You can also see in #40 of this FAQ the advantages of rooting.

JTAG won't work - the pins are disabled.
@rekids has been experimenting, but because of the way the security keys have been updated, looks like even an EEPROM replace doesn't work except in early cases.
Looks like software exploit might be the best hope at this point.
So back to the question of "why". Are there any firmware improvements on missing features available like?
- remembering more than one WLAN password
- the ability to mirror and stream content from a device via direct connection without the need of a local WLAN
- support for more file types

No but here is a short list of advantages...
1 Whitelist control by Devs as opposed to Google meaning some apps that Google refuses to add can be used (none fit that category so far)
2 Update control! If Google sends out a bad update it usually won't affect rooted users because those updates go through a second QA testing by the Eureka Devs
3 The ability to see Device status without needing to use a mobile device and Chromecast app.
4 Should someone decide to create a customized Rom in the future you could test and flash it.
5 Custom DNS and DNS Override is available for those who want to get around Geo restrictions on content
6 Options and control of your device is always a good thing

This is largely handled/accelerated by the hardware, so not sure software could solve this while remaining within the design limits of Chromecast (both hardware capabilities and cooling), but there are lots of brilliant people here... just not sure how many of them are interested enough.
Just saying, if you want to root it, there are plenty of posts for that
Noob Chromecast question:
If you root it, can you install any app from Playstore like a video player? I mean my Sony TV can read lot of video formats from USB but not all of them, I just want an app to read them all on my TV, I wonder if a rooted Chromecast can do it?

It still needs Internet because it "hot loads" apps from the Internet, with the exception of Netflix.
If you are rooted, you might want to look at rCast which allows you to you Chromecast as a standalone media player without Internet.

Can we cast anything locally without internet just as we do in casting ? Or it's only for the files stored in chromecast internal memory ?

I'm so confused, read here. the article seems to indicate that one can cast locally stored media on the cellphone to the chromecast utilizing the newly added cast feature to the chromecast app. This is with a stock chromecast, not rooted. I have not personally tried this. This article was just published January 2016.
Can any confirm this?
That article states you can Mirror a phone to a CCast without WiFi but you can't cast to it from Apps.
In that scenario the content isn't technically playing on the CCast it's on the Phone...
Anything that happens on the phone will be seen on the CCast in that case.
I missed that distinction between an app and casting the phone directly.
Thanks for clarifying.
It will work in a pinch if you have no choice but it's not as good as having a Travel Router or WiFi connection.

No cast devices found

I have been using a rooted Chromecast for more than a year. Recently however when I am unable to cast from either PC Chrome or Android phone. Team Eureka web panel indicates all ok and I can see my albums on TV when I switch to chromecast HDMI source. However, Cast app in Chrome cannot connect, unable to play youtube, HBOGo, etc. Any suggestions on how to resolve?

Try logging into your Chromecast via a web browser, then change the Team-Eureka Whitelist to the Google Whitelist.
This work for me.
Thanks that worked! Should I keep the Google whitelist going in future?

Can I install Plex on to rooted chromecast?

I have an old chromecast that I rooted a while back, and I would like to install plex onto it permanently because I want to use it on a network that doesn't have internet access. Can this be done? If so, how? I would only use this chromecast for plex and nothing else, ever. Thank you very much.

You cant make it work as Chromecast need to access Google Cloud Services to work, even its a local casting. This is the BIG DIFFERENT and most of the time become a problem/stopper for Google to work at Mainland China and Russia as Most Google Services are blocked on Internet on a national basis.
For local casting which does not need any Internet Cloud Services, you can use Airplay or DLNA devices such as Anycast or Ezcast toggle.

Using chromecast offline (no internet) through a fixed flash rom.

So far chromecast needs an internet connection to cast content to it. That means chromecast can't be used to cast downloaded Netflix videos without any internet. Internet is rather difficult on a ship on the sea or in a caravan in the outback. It seems to me a rather valid request since more and more apps allow downloading content and use it offline. At least as long as the device is set up, offline using should be possible.
Would it be possible to build a fixed ROM analoge to the Flashcast-Autoroot ROM (https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-tv/chromecast/rom-flashcast-autoroot-t3270332) which just allows using chromecast without an internet connection provided setup is already done? Does anybody have any infos disregarding?
