Uninstalling gmail and google calendar? - Nook Touch Themes and Apps

Anyone know if you can delete/uninstall the gmail and google calendar that gets installed on a rooted Nook wi NTGapps.
Just don't have any need to fit on my nook and would prefer not to have it in case my nook gets stolen or falls into the wrong hands.

Download the app root browser (easiest way is to use the play website and 'push' it to your device - hopefully you will have set up a sync with your account?) , if not, search for the app root browser, navigate to system/app/ x , x is gmail.apk or calendar.apk. Next part took me a while to figure out, click the button on the toolbar like thing which says 'multi select' then select/highlight the ones you want to delete, then just click delete, you will find they are no longer existing XD. Alternatively rename them or disable (im not quite sure how that works), but deleting them means they are gone for good, look into deleting a lot of other apks too, like phone and camera, they just dont need to exist.

Just a couple things from experience, if you delete a couple things you might not have wanted to (i sure did XD) , latinime.apk is the keyboard, so leave that alone. Library you can get rid of, i found a much better version of the library that some dude (cannot remember the thread) had made, if you want that i can upload it or just find the thread again.
I generally just googled some of the things i was unsure about removing, or just copied them over to somewhere else then deleted them to see if nothing broke XD.

If you could send me that link to the alternative library that would be amazing. What's the major difference between it and the stock B&N one that makes it so much better?

it fits way more books on a screen, and you can also filter by name, last read, series, author etc,
this is the site http://www.temblast.com/android.htm , its library.apk, try it out, see what you think, what ive done is mapped the n button to open library, so i can easily switch to library from the relaunch/launcher.
full credit to renate nst who made this library app, its pretty good.

I use to remove system applications SystemApp Remover. He is able to delete, make backups and freeze the application.

Galaxy Tab email app port - help wanted

I was messing around with the Galaxy Tab firmware and found that its email app is really nice and works amazingly well on JI6 for our Captivates. I definitely like it better than our stock email app.
The only problem I've found, and it's relatively minor, is that I can't scroll to the very bottom of emails, so the last few lines of emails aren't visible unless they're short and don't require scrolling. Usually it's just a signature or something unimportant that isn't visible, but it would be awesome if we could figure out a way to fix it. It surely has something to do with the Tab having a higher resolution screen than us.
I attached some screenshots and the apk for people to fiddle with.
Installation Instructions
1. Backup and delete Email.apk and Email.odex in /system/app.
2. Copy the new Email.apk to /system/app and select/install it from there using a file manager.
does look interesting, looks alot more feature rich than the captivate email client, hoping the cut off gets fixed n ill deff download
looks very nice! does it only get cut off while in landscape mode or does the orientation not matter?
Have you tried it with Exchange? If so, does it let you picke which folders to sync?
Does it co-exist with the existing email client or do you have to replace the Captivate one?
nice find
just installed and all you need to do is pinch to zoom and you can see the bottom!!!!!
I will be using this now! Thanks again sweet find!
As for exchange you might be able to get it through IMAP but i dont know for sure!

Gets cut off in both.
The landscape mode is really cool though. Oh, and animations (scrolling, zooming, page transitions, etc) are all very smooth.

Don't think it lets you pick which folders to sync with Exchange.
Not sure if it can coexist. Maybe someone with a little more development experience can chime in and tell us how to do that.

You can use Root Explorer for everything.
Well root explorer doesn't give me an option to uninstall when I click the apk, and Titanium Backup can't find it to uninstall it.

Just delete the Email.apk and Email.odex files after copying them over to your SD. Then copy the new Email.apk over to system/app and click it to install. All from Root Explorer.
Thanks,it works and its nice. Let me know if there are any other apks that we can replace!

Is there a way to have the phone think it isn't a file that already exists in the phone so I don't have to delete the default email app?
I found good and bad - the good is that typing a name that is on the Exchange server (not on the phone) and it automatically searches for you and pulls it back.
The bad - I can't find anyway to sync any other folder. Even moving to my junk email or sent folder and nothing updates.
Looks like i am going back to 2.1 for now.
EDIT - spoke to soon, eventually they flow into Junk email box, but no way to force sync.
Also, the buttons are to small for the Captivate screen (compose, forward, reply) - but the client is nicer then stock - if only it were built for the captivate.
EDIT 2: seems to be no way (I can find) to turn off images - so all the web beacons and stalker tags are activated.
App looks very nice and we can hope some of the pretty-ness can eventually make into the Captivate app. Looks like there are some exchange issues trying to use on the 2.2 captivate build. Not sure if its the captivate itself or just an incompatibility between the app and OS, but push email doesn't seem to work for me and I have some issues getting it to sync a full 2 weeks work of email.
Sadly I am back to Touchdown until I can find a better option.
is there a reason my /system folder only has like 3.5 mb of free space?? I backed up the original email.apk, and tried to delete both original files, but they would never delete. I even tried to just replace with the new mail.apk but it said i didn't have enough free space. Using root explorer, btw
i hate to hyjack, but is there a place to find all the galaxy tab .apk's? id like to see what it has to offer, if the mail client is so good how is the browser?

[Q] Personal Theme Pack - REWARD AVAILABLE!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Okay so I've made a custom theme pack for myself, now I just need to know if there's a program out there, for un-rooted users, that will allow me to manually change each existing icon myself? If anyone knows of such a program please reply with it, including some information on where I could find the program.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help out, there's a couple quid in it for the 1st successfull program/method that works exactly how I want it to.
Please note, I don't particularly want to edit each file .apk manually to change its icon =D
How many views and no one wants to make any money?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
It is not possible to change something like the icons without root as it would need access to modify the apk files
Okay so given that I'm looking for a nice simple 1 click root, once found what would be the cards in the deck then?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
You could change the shortcut icon on the homescreen for example with a program called anycut, or the paid one called bettercut
Otherwise you will need root acses
Edit: Or (Don't know if this works someone might need to correct me ) if you get each apk of the app you want to change the icon on, just open the apk and replace the icon
EDIT2: Nvrmnd read the first post slowly
I've already sussed out the homescreen icons and yeah it makes a massive difference to me, but idealy I want every icon changing to the way I want it, is there a 1clickroot method for Hero?

Hmm... Umm... I got two methods that im not sure if they'll work, first search the market for androot (i think) and try root it that way, second download ROM Manager from the market and install the clockwork mod recovery, there the closest ways to 1 click i think

First thing, could you go into (on your phone) Settings, ABout phone, Software infromation and then write what it says under Firmware version
Hey I've got to go for a bit now
I reccomend looking here seems simple
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/
And that should work
Now we're down to business! 2.1-update1, I done that myself =D lol then I updated something else to 3.35.61.2 if this is to any use =S
Hehe I can't keep up anymore. It's such a long time since I rooted my phone I have no idea what I did Anyways the trick is to let out what you don't need. Software number etc. often doesn't matter. It's pretty easy actually. When you get root you can very easily install a recovery. Basically you just download Amon_RA from the dev section and type in some basic commands in a terminal emulator on your phone AFAIK (that is when you have gained root which you hopefully can with a one-click method) and then you can start modding flashing etc.
ADB is really easy to set up. You download the zip file from here, extract it and (I recommend) put the extracted folder on your system drive. Now you can rename it to something easy like "adb" or "Android". If you open your command prompt by typing in "cmd" in the search bar in start (if you're using Windows Vista or 7) or opening "run" and then typing in "cmd". You can now type in "cd yoursystemdrive:\thenameofthefolder\tools" and start using ADB commands. Like adb ls -1 system/app (this will list all your system apps. You can replace "system" with "data". Thos will list all your installed apps) or adb pull nameoftheapkyouwanttoedit.apk \adirectoryyouwanttocopyitto (this will copy an app you want to modify. To modify it you can extract with WinRAR or 7zip etc. and edit the images (except the ones that ends with ".9.png")) and at last adb push \thedirectorythemodifiedapkisin systemordata/app (this will put the modified apk on your phone).
Hope this helps a little

[Q] How to edit Share Menu in Android 2.2?

Hey all,
I'm new to Android and tried searching the web and here and found nothing.
Is there any app I can download that will allow me to edit the Share menu?
I have a bunch of apps that came with my Galaxy S that I don't use because I replaced them with better apps (i.e, Samsung email, default SMS app) but they continue to populate in the share menu.
This is driving me crazy. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

i have the same q.?
bump. you guys get it figured out? i have the same issue and posted in another forum asking the same thing. you can keep an eye on it there too in case they answer first. (i am bmoons on that one)
it wont let me link over there yet but its on android forums dot com
This is a known problem.
I think the way the apps appear in the menu is their manifest xml includes details that allow gallery to draw the details as opposed to them pushing their details into an editable menu.
So, delete the apps with something like super manager (rooted).
funny thing is i used titanium backup to uninstall the stock twitter app and its still there. some of those apps dont even have options. i use an app that downloads youtube videos and its in the share menu for some reason. i tried it on a video i recorded to see if maybe it would upload to my account and it doesnt do anything.
i hope they fix it. i dont like that picasa is an option but not even loaded on the phone anywhere that i can find. havent gone in with a root explorer. mostly because i know i will get cocky and delete stuff and ruin the phone
There's an app for that... almost
Andmade Share gives you a configurable Share item where you can edit what appears in its sub-menu. Second-best to what the OP requested, but better than nothing.

Enabling Facebook Contact Sync in Ice Cream Sandwich

I'm using Koush's CM9 Alpha 12 ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356228 with the Franco kernel, and I'm saddened that it's sorely missing one big feature that i'm used to in the NSCollab ROM i came from. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959282)
In the stock Android 2.3.3 that came with the phone, if the Facebook app was installed, it could sync contacts over from your account, including phone numbers, emails, and pictures. The OTA 2.3.4 removed that function, as Google had deemed it as a violation of their TOS.
NSCollab (based off of CM7), which i'd used since 2.3.5, enabled that function somewhere in the system files, and it was fully usable, no questions asked. The CM9 build i'm using, however, lacks that feature.
I've compared both of their build.prop files and don't see any differences that would stand out, and I'm at an impasse here. I'm almost determined to find the setting in the CM7 ROM that allows Facebook syncing on this device and be able to use it in CM9. I'm not sure i want to comb every system file, though. Any assistance?
The reason it works in custom ROMs is because they patch it to work. It's not a build.prop issue I do not believe. It is a bit deeper than that. Hopefully someone can she some light to get it working. It's a feature I use as well.
But that's the explanation "why" it does not work.. because it's not supposed to by design lol.
by no means do I have an answer but, syncmypix in the market is a decent alternative for the tome being.

I'd determined that long ago, but i'm almost certain there's a flag somewhere in the system files. My cousin has an HTC Thunderbolt (horrible phone on the stock ROM) running the stock ROM, Gingerbread 2.3.5, and it's enabled on it. I know that Google specifically disabled it on their flagship phones, and i want to know how they did it and how to reverse it.

I have tried Syncmypix, Friendcaster, and another one that tries to re-enable native syncing, but none of them work near as well as native syncing.
In GB it was in system\app\ContactsProvider.apk , one line need to be added which whitelists com.facebook.katana. Maybe it's the same in ICS.
[edit]
There, I looked it up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978470
Here you can find the official statement from Google about Facebook sync:

Anyway you can sync your contacts using Friendcaster and you can update your contact pics using syncmypix

I'd considered that, even set up a decompiling environment, but never got around to trying it. Just tried it, and found out that comparing the two ContactsProvider.apk files (from CM7 and CM9), that ICS does not use the arrays.xml that Gingerbread did. Adding it in, recompiling it, and signing it results in FC's and wiping out your contacts storage. Thank god for Titanium backup.
Edit: Derp, found out system apps aren't supposed to be signed. Trying again.

I well know what Google did, and i'm very disappointed in them. And i'd rather not use third-party apps if we can enable native syncing at the system level.
Pushing the unsigned apk doesn't cause FC issues, but it still doesn't sync. The Facebook app cuts off at "Other Settings". Does anyone want to test out the apk for me, see if they get the same results?
The APIs are different in ICS and doing the white list trick may not work. Check out the smali folder because there could be stuff that needs to be changed in there too...

I've already tried this. You'll be able to get the account to sync in Accounts, but the new contacts app is substantially different from the Gingerbread one... Like ^ says, I think a few smali edits have to be made to include this properly.

I'm combing the smali folder as we speak, but nothing stands out as a definitive match
The one problem about ics, you're working to fix. Thanks man! I hope you find your answer!
Haven't found it yet, though. I've been trying to get into contact with koush, see if he's had any insight.
MoDaCo got it working on the Galaxy Nexus. If anyone has the galaxy yet, you could upload his rom and them comb through the /system and see what has been changed. we could then possibly implement it for the Galaxy S as well.

4.4.2 BloatWare

Has anyone noticed how much they have moved it around. I mean not only is it in /data/data/ /data/etc/ /system/app/ and other places, they now put in /system/priv-app/ and others. They are really trying to hide it this time lol. I was think of putting a new list together if people are interested.
I do a lot of traveling, so it may take a few day before I can sit down to complete it.

I'd love to see a list of where they put the bloatware and if possible a list of anything that you have removed without causing any issues. Thanks for your work on this!
I vaguely recall reading an article or press release/quote that samsug had heard consumers and are scaling back on bloat with less forced installs on the S5. It seemed like shortly after that, new apps started appearing on my phone, as if to ratchet it up on S4 users...
In any case between Samsung, Google and Sprint I have over 40 apps disabled/frozen or uninstalled. It's beyond ridiculous at this point.
what's everyone using to freeze, I'm trying to avoid having to rename them all to .bak or straight up deleting.. titanium? or something else..

Could just disable the app in the app manager, quite a few allow it, those that don't can just change to.bak. That way if something is not working you can enable things later if something is misbehaving.
From my experience, it would appear that items in /system/app can be disabled through app manager, but not in /system/priv-app. I lasted maybe a week on the stock ROM and then flashed Cyanogenmod, so I don't know exactly if that's true or not.
You might want to check out this thread as it has given you a good head start, but it just doesn't include the sprint bloatware. I'd be interested to know what sprint specific apk's can be removed from stock NAE without messing up any of the network stuff.
