I love my Lumia 520 but it has these random lockups where it works all except the touch screen. Just the touch screen has stopped responding. It's rare but annoying.
Has anyone else had the issue? It seems to happen only when charging with the stock charger. Its quite weird as the phone keeps working while in the frozen state. I've already hard reset the phone to no avail, I am running amber.
Well-known problem which can affect any phone that uses a capacitive screen. While charging, the electric field produced interferes with the capacitive sensing of the screen. Holding the phone in different orientations may fix this, or placing it on top of different materials (wood or glass instead of metal, or vice versa, for example). Alternatively, using a different charger *might* help. It may also be influenced by humidity, which could be different to control but might be something to pay attention to. You could try exchanging the device, though; it shouldn't be totally inoperable while plugged in.

I hope this finds you in high spirits and good health. Just a day ago my phone started acting peculiar regarding the lighting of the touchscreen.

Damage: Slightly scratched hard plastic from dropping 2-3 times. Otherwise, outwardly pristine
Upon purchasing the phone, I immediately noticed that the screen would creak if it was pressed on the bottom right hand side (by the send button). The right side of the screen also protrudes slightly higher than the left when in the open position. I have owned the device for about 7-8 months now and have noticed that on the rear, when in open position, there is a scratch where the sliding mechanism moves. The paint is stripped and the underlying metal is displayed in those areas. And now on to the issue at hand:
When the phone is closed (touchscreen only):
- When pressing MENU, or any key that would normally illuminate the screen, this does not happen. The screen stays dim, yet the lights on the buttons bellow it brighten.
- If I slide out the keyboard while the screen is supposed to be on (meaning the buttons are lit up), nothing happens.
When the phone is open (keyboard presented):
- And the screen is off, if I press MENU, the screen comes right up with no brightness issues.
- At this point, if I close the keyboard, the backlight disables itself. The screen is NOT completely blank. If I reflect the light of the room off of it, I can just barely make out that it is indeed displaying whatever task it was that was open, but if I were in a dark room, there would be no chance of recognising what is being presented.
- Continuing from above, once the screen's backlight is disabled and I reopen the keyboard, it does not turn back on. I must turn off the screen and turn it back on for the backlight to resume normal functioning.
One would think that if the issue lies in a loose wire that once the keyboard is extended that the backlight would regain normal functioning. Because this is not happening and that it is only working under certain circumstances, I cannot accurately ascertain whether this is a software or hardware problem.
Attempted remedies:
- Soft reset (both rebooting the phone by powering off and on and by going into the reset menu)
- Hard reset (by going into the reset menu and hitting ALT+W, etc)
Neither of these attempts succeeded in restoring functionality of the backlight. I've also search high and low through the settings, but see nothing other than 'Brightness' under 'Sound & Display.'
It may be noteworthy that I have the paid application 'Power Manager' installed. Though, perhaps not since this issue was still occurring AFTER the factory reset when no foreign applications were installed.
If you require any additional details, feel free to give a reply with any questions. I'm sincerely hoping I don't have to deal with T-Mobile or HTC to have this repaired. Any tips, ideas or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Update on issue:
On the way home from work, as the battery was on it's last leg (less than 10%), I turned off the screen while the device was in the open position after finishing a text. Upon attempting to re-activate the screen, it would not do so. As always, the side buttons lit up, but the screen was blank no matter what I did. I could hear the vibration from receiving texts and the red 'omg I\'m dying LED' was still flashing, so the device had not died.
Returning home, I gave it a reboot by removing and replacing the battery. I've kept it in the open position since it has been plugged in and am quite afraid of manipulating the slide mechanism any further.
I'll be calling t-mobile to get their opinion on any further troubleshooting momentarily and report back.

The ribbon wire in the slide mechanism is either broken or pulled out of socket.
Since day one, I've had touchscreen issues. When the charger is plugged in, the keyboard is unusable. One touch triggers keys all over the place faster than I could ever touch the screen. Unplugging the charger fixes that issue.
After a while, phantom presses start happening. If an app supports multitouch zoom, it becomes impossible to scroll instead of zooming. Keeping the screen clean seems to delay the problem from happening. If the problem presents, just cleaning the screen won't help. I have to turn the display off and back on for any effect. I've heard putting on a screen protector helps with this issue, but I haven't had a chance get one. If the screen protector just masks the issue, that doesn't seem like a good fix.
Should I try to get a replacement Nook Color now that doesn't have these issues or should I wait until the last month of my warranty to see if I can get more developed hardware? There doesn't seem to be a consensus if these issues are hardware or software.

That must be frustrating. Mine does not behave this way at all (though I've only had it for 4 days). If you bought it in the store, I'd exchange it. If you bought it via the BN ebay store, I'd try the screen protector first as I hear it's quite an ordeal returning it via ebay.
This us a very common issue. It has something to do with sensitivity of the screen increasing greatly when the unitbis charging or the screen brightness is way up. I just chage mine at night and don't worry about it.
I was having a lot of problems with phantom touches -- I even replaced my 2nd NC just to get another one that had the same issue. I ended up putting on a B&N anti-glare screen protector and haven't witnessed any phantom touches since then.

Happens a lot to me even while unplugged. Known issue. Until I pick up a B&N screen protector I find locking the device and a quick wiping of the screen with a microfiber or any soft cloth (my shirt works in a pinch) removes moisture and oil build-up that is causing the uber-sensitive digitizer to register phantom touches.

Here's what is going on...
My Galaxy S I9000 (Bell Canada) was water damaged, after being dried for many days it turned on, but the battery almost immediately drained. I left the phone and forgot about it. Bought a new cheap phone without a SIM.
More recently I got a new battery for it and it turned on and was working great, staying charged and everything. When I went to the service provider to get a new SIM for it, we powered down the phone, pulled the battery and SIM card and put the new SIM in followed by the battery. Afterwards the phone would not power on, but the two face buttons on either side of the 'Home' button lit up and would react to touch. I tried removing the battery and SIM a few times and would get the same result.
After bringing my phone home and leaving it with the battery out for a few days, I thought I would try it again. It powered up again as if nothing was wrong. To test it again, I pulled the battery and SIM, replaced them, and my black screen/won't turn on problem returned.
Every so often it will power on and be useable. It is recognized by Kies, I've flashed it to firmware 2.3.4.
I'm looking for any helpful suggestions for what might solve my problem. I'm wondering if it's a hardware problem and short of isolating the part of the phone that is faulty and replacing it, the phone is toast.

My friend has dropped the SGS into a pool before. Problem was fix after buying a new battery.
Either: Damaged screen + Contact. Or the reaction with water and the battery. hydrogen gas prevents screen from connecting to main-board.
It still turns on occasionally, and when it powers up, it's as if nothing is wrong. Screen works, displays everything fine, colour is crisp, screen reacts to touch. The big problem is it won't turn on all the time. Would what you said still explain this?

The only thing I know (assuming the screen or motherboard is 100% functioning) is hydrogen gas being present. You might know TV remote with old battery casually respond to presses. After cleaning contacts it should work again.
I disassembled the phone and cleaned all the contacts on the main board with rubbing alcohol, I did not do anything to the screen though. Should I try taking it apart again and breaking it down further? (ie. separate the screen?)

Anyone noticed something similar?
Sometimes when unlocking phone with the unlock button or by double tapping it wakes up but is unresponsive to touch, the brightness alters with random intervals, wallpaper flickers. The phone becomes usable again after a few locks and unlocks with the button , although very rarely but still sometimes it automatically locks itself after unlocking.
Factory reset didn't help and before that I was using all the latest updates.
Is this a problem on the hardware side?

Pretty sure mine is. It started with similar issues and has only gotten worse. Flexing the phone a bit makes the screen go all wonky and it's the only way I can get it to come on/become responsive. I will more than likely have to send it in to Sony. Ugh.

Idk wth all that means. Some of it I can guess at...but for a phone that was treated rather gingerly...to have behaved in such a manner after X amount of months (7, I think it was, before stuff started going wonky) w/out the screen being cracked or damaged in any way...the answer is lost on me! Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

I have had my Xperia Z3 compact for a bit over a year now, and experienced the "sudden death" problem a handful of times. The symptoms are pretty much the same as everyone else said: black screen, no response to power button, sometimes red light after plugging in but nothing on screen. Thankfully I have been able to revive it reliably by first holding Power + Vol Up for 20 seconds, release, then plugging in the charger.
After the last few incidents, though, I think I'm starting to see a pattern: the sudden death always happened after putting the phone on a metal surface. For example, the magnesium lid of my ThinkPad Yoga 460 laptop, or the (presumably steel) top of a washing machine. Every time I pick the Z3C up and notice it has died, it has always been lying on a metal surface before. However, it does not die every time I put it on a metal surface, so I can't reproduce the issue reliably.
I remember reading somewhere that the sudden death is caused by a hardware bug with power management. It sounds kinda plausible that being too close to a conducting surface may change the capacitance / inductance of something on the PCB just enough to trigger some kind of protection. So perhaps using a thick case may prevent sudden death by making the phone farther away from the surface it is placed on?
