I plan to root my 32 GB Motomaker GSM Unlocked/Tmobile Moto X by downgrading to 4.2.2.
To do that I need the 4.2.2. firmware, but I don't know which firmware to use as I know there is a Tmobile 16GB phone.
Which firmware do I use? Is the firmware labeled TMobile the same as the GSM unlocked?

those are the the two firmware files you need to root. Good luck and here is a guide to help you along

Good luck and let me know if you have any issues
Stop stop. Don't do that. Just get the unlock code and unlock the boot loader. That way you can root and recover and not mess with exploits that can wreck your phone while the boot loader is locked.
If its unlocked you don't need to jump through those hoops. Simply flash twrp recovery and reboot system and it will install supersu.

he is correct still use this guide but go down to the section about root with a unlocked bootloader. it will get you right threw it a lot easier and faster.
Thing with that is that it voids the warranty since he has the Moto maker version and not the dev

You are right. I don't want to unlock the boot loader because of the warranty issue.
Following the process - although lengthy - will root without voiding the warranty.

Catch 22 then... Because once you go 4.4.2 you won't be able to downgrade anyway. BTW, at least until recently, the phone comes with 4.2.2 and immediately updates to 4.4 so you shouldn't have to downgrade if you want to try all that. Here's the other thing you should know... You have 2 weeks to return of exchange the phone (30 days in California) from the day you got it. You unlock and root and do all that and find an issue you can return it regardless of have it replaced. I know because I had to do that... My moto maker x was also boot loader unlocked and I got my money back.
Its not all that likely you will get something wrong with the phone past the initial period but it's up to you. You are more likely to break the phone trying to root exploit than it breaking past 2 weeks out of warranty.

What if my phone is Developer Edition (GSM) - will I be able to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2? I am willing to unlock bootloader and to root.
If you take the OTA to 4.4.2 you get the 30.B4 bootloader. From what I've read, you cannot go back to an earlier bootloader and earlier system versions will brick if attempting to use them with the 30.B4 bootloader. So no, I don't think you can revert to anything earlier if you get to 4.4.2. At least this is my understanding.
I have the XT1058 on 4.4.4 and I have been having no luck in finding a way to unlock the BL. Is there anyway at all?

sIm Lock, aka carrier lock, has nothing to do with bootloader unlock.
To bootloader unlock, you need the unique code for the phone. Likely due to carrier contracts, Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock code for ATT, Verizon, or Republic Wireless, but does for many/most other carriers. At one point there was a web site in China and a Middleman who access to Moto's list or database of codes which included even those Moto didn't publicly make available (I.e ATT, VZW, RW) but that dried up a while ago. JCase found a vulnerability in the bootloader on the 2013 X, and came out with/updated his Sunshine tool with a hack exploiting that vulnerability to unlock the bootloader (without having the unique code) on the 2013 X too, but it doesn't work once the X has been upgraded to 4.4.4. Sunshine DOES work on the 2013 X if it has never been upgraded past 4.4.3.
Thanks for letting me know. I got the phone in August and it was on 4.4.3, but then I accidentally installed 4.4.4. If only I had known that I wouldn't be able to root it after that.... It really sucks because I really want Viper4Android on my Moto X.

Jcase has been teasing us with word of the next sunshine version working for 4.4.4. It was projected to release early January but they must not be done putting all their awesome into that sauce. Be patient and I bet you'll have an unlocked bl soon enough.
In an abundance of caution, I would probably hold off taking the lollipop update coming soon in case it patches whatever vulnerability they are exploiting.

4.4.3 or 4.4.2? because I wasn't aware that there was a 4.4.3 for ATT.
I checked it as soon as I got it and it was 4.4.3. A few days after, a notification for 4.4.4 popped up and I accidentally hit install. I got the phone August 10th, 2014.

India? What model X do you have, and from what carrier?
Often times the 2013 X in EMEA has been an XT1052.
Have you tried checking Moto's home page to get the unlock code? https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth

Ya mine is XT1052 .I checked the site ,in find device section there's
moto xCanada / Rogers
Moto xUS / Sprint, USC, TMO
Moto x Latin America
Mine is Asian retail Indian model so how to find if unlocking is avbl?
If I proceed with (moto x US) and generate serial key of my phone using SDK tools and check for unlock bootloader in site, my phn won't get bricked or anything right? That's a doubt I have.

You should be able to use the same web site to get the bootloader unlock code, many others with the European and Asian XT1052 have been able to get their bootloader unlock code there.
If you get the code in an email, it will either work, or give you an error if its not the right code. It will not brick your phone.

See the one stop shop for root thread in general. Right at the top of the page.
All current root methods are there, based on device versions and state. ?
There is a untested way to unlock the bootloader but is very risky, you must open your device. Anyway if you are so brave to try this procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/droid-ultra-maxx-brick-recovery-t2830806 look at this guide at the second point, first you must drill the plate on the ram chip, you must short the right pin on your moto x to ground (i attach a photo, pointed by the orange arrow) then follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-resurrecting-bricked-moto-x-t2629057
THIS IS A VERY RISKY PROCEDURE: YOU CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!!
I wouldn't. ^^^^

yes, update moto update services via playstore. I dont own a vz X but I suggest you check your bootloder unlock option if interested before updating.
Yes root and unlock it now, because 4.4.4 root isn't quite ideal yet.

Did you buy it used? If yes, then its possible that the previous owner rooted and disabled the OTA update check. Especially if this is NOT a Developer Edition for Verizon.
Now, if it was purchased new, or the original owner didn't disable the OTA update check, then its likely because you are not on Verizon's network. I've seen this happen on my BB Z10, galaxy S4 and S5, and my Moto X, when running wth my t-mobile sims or on wifi. They will always say either no update found (90% of the time), or Update service not available (10% of the time). I must put my Verizon SIM in to download the update.
Since both the Developer and Non-Developer XT1060 for Verizon use the same ROMs you can download and manually flash the SFB/FXZ files from Moto Directly... -> HERE If you have the Non-Developer XT1060 and you want to unlock the bootloader, do NOT flash anything newer than 4.4.2!!
Use the link in my signature about the Risks of Downgrading to confirm your phone's bootloader version to get a better understanding of your phone's state.
IF you want to root and disable write protection going forward, you need to unlock the bootloader, and you do NOT have the developer edition for Verizon, the only option for that would be to use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader BEFORE you upgrade it to 4.4.4 or higher. For more... see HERE

I got it brand new sealed box cost approx $122 16GB, so no chance of it being rooted. I'm glad that it's still JB, read that part of 4.4.4 being not unlockable at the moment. So I just made the payment for Sunshine now waiting for either of the devs to wake up and send me those sweet digits to unlock. The phone came with a Verizon sim card in it but I get a message saying its unrecognizable but that's okay It's customs roms all the way for me from here.

You are all now in a new thread.
I've read mixed things and dont' know what can and can't be done. I purchased an XT1095 from ebay that had device protection activated. The phone is running android 5.1 with the 60.16 bootloader. The phone has a locked bootloader. My thought is if I can downgrade to 5.0, it will let me start the phone without a google account, and then I can unlock it and go from there. Problem is, I haven't had any success yet. I can get the phone into fastboot and recovery mode, but I cannot get it to flash a lower version bootloader or system image (I get invalid preflash validation errors) and the system image says it's not signed properly. There's gotta be a way to downgrade it, but I can't find a solution. Any ideas?

You wont be able to flash anything if your bootloader is locked...its an xt1095 unlock the bootloader. There are many posts on how to do this for the xt1095 you basically get a code from moto that you apply through adb fastboot. After you unlock bootloader you can flash stuff BUT NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER try and downgrade the gpt or bootloader EVER. Just the system and boot images.
just to be sure you got it NEVER TRY TO DOWNGRADE THE BOOTLOADER OR GPT .

I thought the system image is supposed to be flashable even when not locked. Motorola's instructions for returning something to stock has the bootloader and partition flashed - what's the point in doing that if you can't downgrade it?
Anyways, I have tried to unlock it, but since it is running android 5.1, it requires me to set the OEM Unlock option in Android Developer's Settings. Unfortunately, when the phone boots up, I cannot get into any settings without entering the google account information that was used to protect the phone in the first place. So I'm stuck - 5.1 won't let me get far enough to set the setting to unlock so I can't unlock bootloader to revert back to an earlier system version.

Try flashing the 5.1 images. I don't know if that will work but it seems like it might since you're not technically downgrading which would require an unlocked bootloader. Just follow all the commands on Motorola's website.

There is nothing you can do. This is an anti-theft protection. You need to contact the seller and have him login to the account... then after that, the account can be removed. If the seller does not help you, then sorry to say but you have a paperweight because there is absolutely no way around this.

Not quite...I got motorola to accept it under warranty to replace it. The IEMI says the phone was bought in Feb. 2015, so it still has a chunk of warranty left on it.
That surprises me... so if I steal a motorola phone that still has warranty they will send me a replacement that is unlocked just because it is under warranty? Seems like that is a huge problem.

Is that really a huge problem? They will know who claimed the warranty and I'm sure can notice if anyone is abusing that. Not perfect, but not terrible either. Besides, when the phone is turned in for a warranty, how does Moto know that the reason it's locked out is not due to my own google account?
Supposedly the warranty is only with proof of purchase, which you don't have since you bought it from someone else on ebay. That is a big issue because that undermines the whole reason for having this option on the phone.

The person on ebay ran a storefront and I have a receipt from it - I did buy it. The warranty doesn't say you can't buy it from a 3rd party, nor does it say you have to to be the first end-user.

Ok, I stand corrected, but Moto doesn't know if I was the first end user or not. I'm sure I wasn't, but good businesses will honor warranties even when technically against the agreement, terms, or expiration.
Anyways, back on topic - if someone knows of something else I can try while I still have the phone, I would like to hear it.
I received a 2014 Moto X xt1095 as an RMA replacement from Motorola for my old 2013 Moto X. It's the T-Mobile model, xt1095 which is supposed to be unlockable. For whatever reason there appears to be something funky I about the bootloader where despite an all zero CID, unlock token requests to the bootloader return "(bootloader) Could not get unlock data!"
I've been told that probably have to re-return this to Motorola, which would be a giant pain in the butt. Is there anything to either brute force the unlock code or root it without unlocking the bootloader?

Well, sad News first, I think you won't be able to unlock the bootloader.
Now the good News, You can definatly try rooting your device without a bootloader unlocked. Try applications like Kingroot. Infact, as far as I know, you don't even Need a Computer(Desktop/Laptop) to root.
I was able to root my motoX2014 sucessfully without boot unlocked. Let us know if it works for you:fingers-crossed:.
I would call Motorola. An XT1095 should be unlockable right out of the box. The bad news is you'll probably have to swap it out. If they sent you a bad one, make them ship the new one to you first so you won't be without a phone.
Thanks to both of you. I'll look at king root, and even try bullying Motorola into getting me fixed up properly without leaving me to use my Moto g again. I appreciate the help and the morale boost.
