SO I have been looking at what could be the problem. I am doing what I should and that is:
Turn off, hold down volume- + connect usb. It flashes green for 1 sec and nothing else. After 15 sec the mobile boots back to normal again not giving me time to do anything.
I have tried in windows 8 and windows xp 32bit vmware and same.
I am thinking it could be something when I flashed it earlier. I did and rooting flash etc before and then reverted back to normal firmware again
I believe it is not drivers anymore, feels like something is missing in the phone in some way? That it is skipping flash mode in some way?
Just wait until flashtool asks you to attach your device. Then and only then attach your phone in flashmode.
It's probably some kind of safeguard from Sony so that people don't get stuck in flashmode

Hm, I am at work so cannot check. But I think I am doing like this:
1. Mobile is on, plugged in with usb debug
2. Start flashtool and click flash button
3. Choose flashmode
4. pop up tells me to turn off phone
5. I unplug USB, turn off phone, hold down volume- and then insert USB
6. It flashes green for 1 sec and then nothing more. Flashtool does not react and after 15 seconds the mobile boots up like normal with sony logo and just boots into os normally
Plug in to pc after files are prepared. Not before

I fixed the error now
The problem is I am using windows 8 + vmware windows xp. I use xp for the flashing part. The problem is that when I plug in the xperia z windows 8 "takes over" the usb first, so xp does not get the first choice.
To solve this I disable the xperia z in windows 8, after this flashing in flashtool in xp works perfectly
It was just a matter of how windows 8 and xp talked to eachother

I am a total newbie to android (Xperia Z being my first android phone). I can see that there is an update avaiable New firmware (10.1.1.A.1.253) for XperiaZ in PC companion. But I am struggling to get past the "Checking your Phone/tablet" stage on the PC companion app.
It says that:
1. Turn off the phone. Take out the USB cable from computer and phone.
2. Wait for 5 minutes
3. Plugin the USB cable in the computer.
4. Press and hold down the Volume Down button while plugging the USB connector in the phone.
I tried it 6-7 times but after Stage 4 nothing happens and after 5 minutes approx I get to back to same instructions. Do I need to do something with the PC companion on my machine?
I am using PC companion on Windows vista. I am stuck and frustated thinking of my Old Apple days :crying:
at the step 4. what did you do? you have to remember, your phone must be switched off and UNPLUGGED from PC... and then plug in, plus nearly simultaniously press Volume down button (long press, until it says release the button).
I didn't know the part where you have press the button continously untill PC companion tell you to release the button. Thanks I will try that today.
hmm u dont need to turn it off its turning it self off just always click next thats what i did
You need to hold the vol-down button and then plug in the usb cable.

u used SUS tool
update processes by pc companion are in these ways;
1. connect ur phone to pc companion it will find new firmware and update it automatically and then it turns ur phone off after update then u should turn it on > u have new firmware, thatsit
Hi guys, got a slight problem with entering fastboot mode. I hold the volume-up key and connect me USB cable but rather than getting the noise verifying it's been connected ok, I get that dull sound it makes when it hasn't worked. It won't even let me install the drivers and in device manager it comes up as "S1boot Fastboot" for a few seconds before then going into battery charging mode. I downloaded the Android SDK latest and replaced the USB driver INF file with the one sony give you but it didn't work so reversed back to the other driver the SDK manager installs and that didn't work either.
I've been through the tutorials and even tried to update the driver in device manager in the few seconds it stays there but that didn't work either! USB debugging is enabled too!
Please help, I'm not a noob and have done fastboot booting before and yes for those who may ask have already checked to make sure the bootloader can be unlocked and yes it can also the phone is NOT branded and is unlocked to all networks.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!
Dave.
Are you on Windows 8? Using USB 3.0?
"As your flesh bears the sigil....your name is that....of a recusant."
First be sure you're using a 2.0 usb port, if this is ok maybe it's a windows 8 driver problem, so you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2170114. It works for me
For also fastboot and flashmode come for 5 Sec. So Make sure you prepare the file and attach the device to fastboot or flashmode when it is asked.
Still problems
I'm still working on a 2012 laptop with Windows 7 Premium installed. It's fully up to date and all the drivers are installed properly I just don't get it, I've tried everything and it's still making the noise as if it won't connect. I don't know what to do to be honest. Also yes it is USB 2.0.

I have a similar problem. the power light lights up blue then passes into the phone starts loading mode
Sorry for bad English
The updated version (09.14) don't work properly. It doesn't enable me to go to Flashmode. Uninstalled and used the previous version and it worked as it should, no issues entering Flashmode.
i might have actually found the solution. im on the 4.3fw build version 12.1.a.1.201... in my case, my pc will automatically install the drivers for mass storage giving me no chance to update the driver to the one from sony.
you need to do step 9. and 10. if you havent done so from http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions
what i did was allow developer settings and allow debugging via usb.
plug in and attempt to go in to fastboot and obviously it'll fail.
go to device manager. (control panel->hardware and sound->device manager) quickly scroll down go to other devices. you will see s1fastboot (or something like that) if you're quick enough, if not, in my case, the phone will go in to charging mode.
what i did was to disable xperia sp mass storage from disk drives category too.
right click on it and select update driver software and you will select the file you've unzipped (following step 9 and 10 sony's instructions).
after it has finished updating, unplug your usb and attempt to enter fastboot, it should work.
PS: im no expert, this solution might be out there somewhere already or it could just be a great coincidence. some of these steps might not be useful even.
Had this problem and found a funny solution: I switched my cable and the port I was using. Both Ubuntu and Windoze 7 failed on both fastboot and flash mode, even though in both the phone would charge. I grabbed a spare micro USB cable and plugged it into the front of the PC; voila. Now the phone is rooted and running the latest CM.
Need a final solution for this problem
I don't know what to do!!! The problem is this, very similar to the others mentioned above,: When i conect my xperia sp to fastboot mode, pressing volume up while plugging in usb cable, the phone led turns to blue for few seconds and than it just turns to red showing on the screen the battery image( normal charging mode)...... I' m using windows xp and a rooted xperia sp whit cm11 (for locked bootloader obviously). Just two last things:
the phone can be unlocked( I checked it) and fastboot worked the same as now with stock xperia sp firmware.
Please i need a final and a certain solution for this problem!!!
i'll be very thankful to anyone who give me a hand!!!!

Are you trying to unlock your phone?
Have you installed device specific/fastboot/flashmode drivers via FlashTool? If you are on Windows 8/8.1, you need to disable driver verification to get it done.
Alternatively if you just wanna unlock your bootloader, you can use the BLU option in FlashTool. Again all drivers will need to be properly installed for your phone to be detected correctly.
You say you had the same problem with stock firmware which means you probably haven't setup adb/fastboot properly on your PC. Does your phone get detected correctly in Device Manager? Have you tried installing drivers via Device Manager?
....
So the solution is installing flashtool and installato drivers via Emma?? Thanks forma the attention!!

I meant install drivers via FlashTool. Go to C:\Flashtool\drivers or wherever you have installed Flashtool and run the Flashtool-drivers.exe.
Select flashmode drivers, fastboot drivers and common drivers viskan board (SP drivers) and install them. Like I said if you are on Win 8/8.1, you will have to disable driver signature enforcement. Just look it up in YouTube and follow a tutorial.
I recently flashed DooMKernel for my Xperia SP via fastboot. After that, I flashed the kernel (only kernel) of the stock 12.0.A.2.254 via flashmode. However, after that, both fastboot and flashmode are not working on my device. When I hold either the volume up/down button when I plug my phone into my computer, the notification light turns blue/green for a while before turning red for a while and booting normally. I have already installed the fastboot and flashmode drivers successfully and I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 x64. What can I do to fix this?

The funny thing is that it actually does turn blue/green. That goes to show that it's working, it's just that after a certain time of being in that mode, if there are no detectable data transfers, it will restart.
Also, have you disabled driver signature verification and test signing on Windows 8?
This message was sent so that I'm slightly more useful
As CallMeVentus said it works but then reboots. If you're using flashtool you can first select the firmware to flash and when you start it will ask for you to plug your phone in flashmode. Do it and it should directly copy the files, so your phone will stay in the right mode.

CallMeVentus, I have already disabled driver signature enforcement in Windows 8.1 and have reinstalled the flashtool drivers three to four times already. When I plug the phone in fastboot or flashmode, Windows tells me "USB device not recognized". However, when I plug it in as MTP, it detects the device normally. I have used many different USB cables and the problem still persists. Does it have anything to do with my recent upgrade to Windows 8.1?

My C903 cannot access flash mode. The led is flashing red and green like a second, then dissappear. Then I have to hold power+vol up to be able to start the phone. Everything else works great, fastboot and everything. I have flashed roms on this phone work flashtool before and it has worked great. I have DoomKernel and rooted stock. 290. Anyone know why the flash mode won't work. I have nandroid backup and unlocked bootloader, so I can try any suggestions.

Follow these steps....After clicking on “Flash” Button FlashTool will prepare file for flashing. Now enable USB Debugging on your phone and enable unknown sources option in your Xperia Z1 and switch it off. When prompted the notification of connecting your phone, connect it in flashmode.Press Volume down button and then insert usb in phone, you will see red and green light blink once, it means phone is connected in flashmode now.
As soon as phone is detected by FlashTool, flashing beings and wait till it is finished.......
Where is ur fon getting error in above procedure?????

Actually the only things that don't work is flash mode and that I can't charge phone while turned off. It boots into system and starts charging. Anything else works. When I try to flash with flashtool it says connect phone after preparing files to be flashed. The red/green led flashes, but no flash mode. Everything with the phone works, but not flash mode...

I don't know exactly why you want your phone in Flashmode but probably because you want flash something so if you don't mind wipe your phone try use PC Companion and repair the phone to stock, maybe is the custom rom making problems.
My old Xperia Z1 hasn't been used in quite a while, about 12 months due to having a newer phone.
Anyway, it won't quite work as it should and could possibly be very dead.
When I plug it into the wall to charge, it loads the Sony Logo and has a steady red LED. Holding pwr+VolUp does give it the vibrate to power off. So seems to be charging
However, when I plug it into my PC to flashmode or fastboot mode, it simply sits with a blank screen and slow flashing red LED. Off for 3 sec, on for 3 sec. constantly.
From unplug and shutdown, I plug it into my PC whilst holding VolUp for flashmode and nothing.
How cactus is it?
[EDIT/UPDATE]
After leaving it plugged into my pc for quite some time, about 15 minutes, I just got a window installing S1 device, but have no drivers. Can I get these from Flashtool?

No, I don't. After downloading and installing FlashTool, I went to install the drivers, which required me to restart my computer (untrusted driver thing with Win10)
After installing the drivers, it won't try connect to the computer any more. Device manager flashes every 10 or so seconds, but no phone is detected in fastboot or adb.
Does the Xperia Companion do something else?
