I have a rooted Motorola Droid. Verizon just recently started to send me a System Update. When I choose to do the system update the phone reboots and a menu comes up and says that the system updated has been aborted and it has menu to reboot the phone, and other menu options. I guess because the phone is rooted I can't do the system update, but the message is constantly coming up saying I need to do the System Update. What can I do? Thanks for your help and time!
I believe changing the following two lines in the /system/build.prop file will make your phone look like it has already received the update and will prevent it from trying to download/install again.
Change to:
ro.build.description=voles-user 2.2.3 FRK76 185902 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2.3/FRK76/185902:user/release-keys
If you currently have the OTA notification, let it try to install again, reboot after it aborts, make the edits to the build.prop, and reboot. You should not get the OTA again.
Only concern is that I've seen the ro.build.description line end in release keys instead of release-keys. I don't know if there should be a hyphen or a space. If someone with the update sees this, please look at your build.prop and report back whether or not the first edit has a space or hyphen between release & keys.
Thanks for the information, but I have no idea how to do all of that. Does anybody know what the update does? Maybe I can just undo the rooting and allow the update to install and then root it again? I don't think I installed a custom rom, I think I just rooted the phone and that's it. It's been so long since I did it I can't remember exactly what I did. Is there a way I can tell if it has a custom rom or not? I'm enclosing a picture I took of the screen that comes up after I try to install the update, maybe that will help with the info on if the phone is just rooted or has a custom rom installed. It's says, "Android system recovery <2e>", "Patched by SirPsychoS <0.99.3b>".

I have been rooting, unlocking, and loading Roms on other devices for awhile now, but I'm not familiar with how to manage stock updates. I can't seem to find anything, (so maybe this info could be added to a sticky).
I'm rooted with TWRP and a zipped OTA has been posted in anothet thread for my device, XT1064. What can I do to load it? Do I need to flash back to stock first? Can I simply run a fastboot command? I feel like I should know this by now but I'm a bit confused by all the different sources of information.
Thanks, all, for your help.
I have the same question. If someone who has done this, is out there, please let us know.
you tried asked in that other thread???
If is the OTA update do not use it!!!
If you received the OTA on your phone do not update!!!
you will brick your phone.
To install OTA revert back to stock with the factory image. You will go back to Stock Kernel and recovery.
Or wait til someone builds a stock updated ROM and flash that.
If is a image of the ROM, not the OTA, a already updated ROM just follow the instructions on the thread...
Yes, I did ask in the other thread, but I thought it would be better to post a new Q&A thread to keep from cluttering up the other one. Thanks for your help. I'll just wait for a flashable ROM..
Try this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/guide-update-to-lollipop-losing-apps-t2979971
The main idea with OTA is the incremental nature of the update. To keep OTA filesize to a minimum, the system will be patched, not completely overwritten.
So, if you have altered your system in any way, OTA will fail, because it tries to patch files that differ from what it expects. The OTA will check which device it is executed on and will perform various checksum tests before actually installing itself.
If you are experienced with flashing and know how to modify the update-script inside the OTA.zip, then you can go from XT1068-4.4 to XT1064-5.0.1.
But it is quite a lengthy process and not easy nor recommended
You have to go from XT1068-4.4 to XT1064-4.4 to 5.0 to 5.0.1 and must restore the modem. Last but not least the build.prob has to be modified to reflect dual-sim capability.
By the way, the need to lock the bootloader for OTA is a myth. It is not necessary.
I have MOTO G2 (XT1068). I have rooted it and even flashed many ROMs on it. Now if official 5.1 update comes from Motorola and if I revert back to pure stock(one without any customisations) then will I be able to get that update or I have to wait for someone to release it on XDA . I don't know about this things that's why I am asking.
Thanks in advanced.
You can grab the update image and fla**** with fastboot this wipes everything.
Unroot remove all customizations an see if you get the ota, you won't lose any data.
or wait for someone to upload an update zip for recovery
Thanks:thumbup:
I am not sure why it is happening with but i am not able to install 5.0.1 (12 MB) update on my Moto X 2014. I have unlocked bootloader and phone is rooted running on 5.0 Lollipop firmware.
Baseband Version:
MSM8974BP_4125.184.08.27.01R
VICTARA_EMEA_CUST
System Version
22.21.19.victara_reteu.retailuall.en.EU retin
It downloads the update file.
Reboot the device.
Goes into recovery and show me that it's installing the update. Half way on the progress bar the phone reboots.
After booting I see message which tells me that System update installation is failed. It does not give an error message or reason.
I tried installing it multiple times but same results. Any help will be appreciated.
To add Motorola Device Software updater shows me that my firmware doesn't have any available updates. Whereas i am getting regular notifications to run system update.
I attached screenshot of Motorola Device Software updater.
You should be happy, i had exact same config, and had soft brick when trying to upgrade. I believe you can't do the update if you are rooted. So you must flash stock back and then update.

My phone keeps displaying that i have pending system update. What is the right way to get the update without bricking your phone?
After your update i am not going to try any workaround methods to force upgrade. But this is something that should be well explained by Motorola or Android community somewhere on internet. I think need to wait till the time more helpful resources are available.

i think just flashing back the stock system partition using fastbot should do it. I haven't done this myself though, i needed to completely reflash stock

I am facing the exact same problem.
I am currently on 22.21.19.victara_reteu.retailuall.en.EU and the update notification I am getting is for 22.121.1
I have an unlocked bootloader but the phone is not rooted.
I do not agree that OTA update doesn't work when phone has an unlocked bootloader and is rooted. The Android 5.0 update got installed on my phone when it was already rooted (I lost root access after the update).
Still looking for solution for "OTA installation failed" problem though...

So far My 5.0.1 update never got downloaded and i was not able to update the phone using Motorola update. Therefore i flashed Cyanogenmod 12.1 which has latest Android build. This way i stopped annoying alerts of system update on my phone.
Nexus 6 - On Build NGI55D and rooted - another update pending 25 MB
I did factory reset and updated last time and then rooted. Now nexus 6 again shows some update of 25MB. How can i update without getting into issues and preserve my root and dont do factory reset.
Also flash fire gave following g message so i did not try. pls refer screenshot. Kindly guide.
I would presume that it is trying to upgrade you to the October release (N6F27M,) or (NGI77B, Verizon). You can update using either the OTA from here or the factory image from here but you will need to root your phone again after either update.
Hello Sir, Pls could you detail the steps for me. It would be very helpful.
would anyone be kind to answer?
Did you follow the links provided in the answer? At the top of each page linked to are the installation instructions.
You might be able to take the OTA after unrooting using osm0sis' unSU Script: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63615067. I think since you've rooted in system mode for some reason, it won't work. Once the system partition is modified, the OTA will probably be blocked. As a learning exercise, it might be worth trying before following the above advice.
I am still unable to update. Sorry friends. Pls guide in more detail pls.
You really can't get more fine grained instructions than what google provides on the https://developers.google.com/android/ota (full OTA page). For whatever reason that you choose to install root in system mode, you are limited in you ability to do an update now. You WILL lose your personal data. Make sure you back up first.
Your only other choice is a factory reset which will return the device to a state where the incremental OTA is able to be applied. You have already said this is what you have done before.
To reiterate, when you rooted in system mode, you prevented incremental OTA from working.
