[Q] US Cellular Moto X surplus - Moto X Q&A

Why are there so many US Cellular Moto Xs on eBay, Craigslist, etc.? I'm guessing maybe US Cellular ordered too many of them and ended up having to dump them off. But it's really weird. Any insight?

Complicated Carrier developer edition question

I was playing around on my girlfriends at&t moto x and really really liked the phone, the feel of it, the os, I am still on an old 3g unlimited plan and want a new phone, so I'm really looking into the developer edition, only thing is that I am on Verizon at the moment and I could possibly move to alaska in the distant future where there is no Verizon. Is it possibly to buy the at&t gsm developer moto x and activate it on Verizon for the moment? From my findings on Google it seems like the at&t version is a better choice, so does anyone have any knowledge about switching carriers?

You can't activate a GSM Moto X on Verizon, they lack the CDMA chip needed for calling. Verizon did sell world phones like the Rezound that can work on a limited basis on a GSM network as well as their own.
Ahh ok thanks for the help, so I guess I'll just stick with the one I got till she blows

Having trouble with a Verizon Moto X on Tmobile

Hey guys! After doing a little research, I bought Verizon Moto X to use because I read that it's unlocked. I got it new from craigslist for a decent deal. I'm coming from a nexus 5.. I liked it but the feel of the moto x is just amazing. Plus I was always jealous of the active display and always on features.
Anyway, here's the issue.. The phone works brilliantly until 4G comes on. When that happens, data works great, and is blazing fast as usual, but I cannot make calls or send texts. I can receive calls and texts just fine, just can't make them. On everything below 4G there are no issues.
Apparently, since 4.4, you can no longer make new APNs. You can try, but it won't actually save them. For now, I am using an app that accesses the hidden menu to limit the phone to HSPA.
Is there anything I can do or am I better off selling it? Verizon are such ****s.. I don't think I will ever again touch their devices or services again.
Why would u buy Verizon moto for T-Mobile?
T-Mobile moto is unlocked and it supports LTE

It's supposed to be unlocked, it was in the colors that I wanted and it was a great deal. There were T-Mobile ones for sale, but quite a bit more expensive.
I'm pretty sure there was a Verizon Unlocked Moto X and a general unlocked Moto X because Verizon uses different antennas then companies like T-Mobile. Therefore using an unlocked Verizon Moto X WON'T work on T-Mobile or other carriers like Sprint

When you say 4G do you mean LTE or HSPA+?. The Verizon model does not support T-Mobile LTE. HSPA+ should work
The Verizon model doesn't support UMTS/WCDMA on the main band Tmobile uses which is 1700 Mhz/AWS. So it is likely getting confused when trying to switch between bands to make calls.
At the end of the day it was the wrong phone to buy for your needs.

sorry.. but your question doesn't make sense. its sorta 2 questions in one.. lemme try to answer it for you...
Q1: Verizon Moto X to be used in ATT?
A1: Yes. Verizon is SIM unlocked. You can use it on ANY carrier that uses GSM/SIM cards. (LTE/HSPA/Data speeds will vary of course due to the modems or whatever you wanna call them built into the phone. No you can't just change a setting in the menu's as they're hardware specific)
Q2: Can the Moto X be rooted?
A2: YES!****** (If you purchase the DE/Developer Edition, you can get the bootloader unlock code from Google/Motorola directly for free. If you purchased the regular retail version, you can purchase the unlock code from the Chinese middleman; look around forums here as the link has there's a dedicated thread for it. There's a fee for that route that converts to roughly around $40 USD'ish. There's another of rooting, but its dependent upon which version of KitKat are you using and how much you want to deal with ADB/FB commands, scripts, and also SS for custom roms. If i lost you here, then stop thinking about rooting your phone altogether on the Retail/Non-DE version of the Moto X..you'll end up with a very nice paperweight.)
Good luck.
Thanks for the info!! Actually I am completely clueless when it comes to an Android (I currently own an Iphone). I would like to upgrade to Android but I want to buy new. I found the Moto X for $100. through Walmart. Now, I am currently using Net10 which is AT&T, and the Moto X is Verizon. That's the reason I was curious to see if I could somehow change it over to AT&T. Thanks again for your time
If you're seeing a Verizon moto x for $100, then it is likely an on-contract price. Meaning you will need to sign up for Verizon service for two years. I don't think this is what you want.
Unless you are thinking of moto g, which does sell for $100 off contract. In which case you should ask on the moto g forums.

Ok, lets go over this again... Yes, Verizon uses CDMA/EVDO for its Voice, SMS and 3G data. For LTE they use Band 4 and 13.
However, Verizon's phones include Quadband GSM radio for global roaming. The X also includes HSPA/HSPA+ support as well. As a condition of Verizon winning the 700Mhz spectrum auction for their LTE a while back, their LTE phones are SIM Unlocked. This is what allows you to put a Non-Verizon GSM SIM into the X or other VZW phones, set the APN settings correctly, and get working non-verizon service.
There are conditions, like you have to get the APN settings for the "target GSM carrier" EXACTLY right, and data speed is dependent on the "target GSM carrier's" network in your area.
And yes, I've done it with many of my Verizon phones (X, Galaxy S4, Lumia 928, BB Z10 and Q10, iPhone 5 and 5S, etc), using my work issued T-Mobile and ATT sims.
There are several threads about using a Verizon Moto X on T-Mobile and ATT that cover it more in detail.

Agreed. Popped in my wife's ATT simcard from her Iphone5s into my MotoX to prove a point to her.... surprising thing was... i picked up ATT LTE w/o having to configure anything on my VZW Moto X. just got lucky? who knows.. go figure.

Moto x+1 T-Mobile Version?

Will the T-Mobile branded version of the X+1 support wi-fi calling? I need wi-fi calling and would really like the Moto X+1.
I highly doubt it. There was no t-mobile branded version of the moto x, it was just hte generic unlocked gsm version, and it did NOT support Wifi calling. Just like the nexus 4, 5, etc.. so Not very likely.
However the radio on the moto x is pretty good, so maybe the x+1 will have a good one as well and be able to pick up service where other phones dont.

Thanks, was aware of the Moto x and no wi-fi calling supported. Crossing my fingers, Really want this phone.
I should have posted in the Q&A

Moto G LTE Hotspot (undetectable)

Hey, I've got a Moto G LTE from Cricket, I'm wanting to switch to Metro PCS and get their Unlimited 4G LTE... My goal is to tether it to my tablet.
I was wondering if it was possible with my Moto G.... I know I could do it on Sprint with a LG G2, but I really didn't want to switch to sprint and get a new phone, but will if it's my best option.
I'd appreciate a little help, I can stand on my own two feet, just need a little guidance.
i'm guessing that this isn't something that is allowed to be discussed here on XDA because..... I don't see anything about it on here.
