Hi all,
I just get my imported chromecast from the usa.
As I checked in the application its build is 12072 - is that an exploitable build?
The chromecast wants to update but I don't want to let him until i know if this version can be rooted and used with the flashcast or if this is a patched version and I can't update and start using it as it doesn't matter any longer.....
My Y cable is on the way so it means waiting few days, maybe weeks but in case its the exploitable one, I believe it worths waiting...
Thanks

Yes, that is the original firmware with exploitable bootloader. If you want to root, you must not let it update. However, if it is trying to update when you boot it, then it is already too late. The update has been downloaded, and the only way to keep it from being applied AFAIK involves physically opening the Chromecast...

I turned it off until it even finished downloading so I guess it doesn't have the complete file and I can turn it on when it's not connected to the internet without any update prompt... Think it's not too late and so I hope it's not late..

If you already have or can easily find a non-powered OTG cable, you can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2465642
I already had an OTG cable lying around so I bought the cheapest USB hub I could find (made by belkin) and a simple USB 2.0 A Male to A Male cable and the above method worked. It's been 3 weeks since I ordered a couple of Y cables off ebay (from china) and I haven't received them yet, so I'm glad I didn't wait

I connect the hub using the otg to the chromecast, plug in the flashdrive and the power m-to-m cable at last but the chromecas is not getting powered...

Then maybe your hub does not allow power to pass from the downstream ports to the upstream one? The model I am using is this one: http://www.belkin.com/us/F5U407-Belkin/p/P-F5U407/

If your hub is based on a powered model it will most probably feature some way to prevent current flowing the wrong way, which is exactly what we need in this case, so maybe you should try with another hub

Dear Bongski55,
Thank you for this thread. I make many presentations through a projector, and the charging port is perfect!
Perfect! Just ordered one-now I don't have to hack together 2 cables to make one that charges and outputs video!

Hehehe...obviously with this cable alone you won't be able to charge at the same time connect to the tv.
You will have to use either an extender for the audio video cables or a USB extender.

The original question, the way I understood is "how to charge to tab at the same time connect to tv and watch movie or make presentation". I was assuming that there is no electrical outlet nearby to plug the charger and connect the usb cable.
As to how long or how short, the specs are all there in the dealextreme website.
I have no intention to defend this cable, My intention in posting this is to inform anybody interested that this is available for a cheap price and I am using it with no problems. If you are not interested to buy an 8 USD cable then you should instead buy the original Samsung AV cable here

I have to stock HDMI dock and it is working.
When I connect the cable to the tab, and the TV and select the AV input, on the TAB must select something?, I had read that it is automatically had the picture on the TV screen.
I had also measured the rca cables, and the pins on the 30 pin connector and the have contact each other.
Please state what ROM are you using
When I plug the usb to Samsung charger I see the charging icon on the notification bar but it had the X red sign, like when you connect the stock cable to the PC

As I have stated this cable is an imitation/duplicate so I obviously cannot answer for the manufacturer/designer of this cable. Notice that the Samsung cable does not have USB. Maybe this is an after thought? Also notice that the cable are a bit small size and may not last long.....
As to complaints about this cable not working, maybe you can send your cable back to dealextreme as they do have return policy. I cannot vouch for the return service as I have not tried and have not experienced any defect on the items I got from dealextreme.
As I said-"you get what you pay for"......peace to all!

I don't think so for 2 reasons. Usually even powered usb hubs don't give out power through the input port [The source port of the hub]. And even if it did, it would be 500 mAh [the N7 charger is 2000 mAh], which [edit:] isn't enough enough to charge the N7 with the screen on. If the screen is off though, it will slowly charge it.
Also, apparently this is already implemented in Faux's beta kernel, you have to use echo to enable it [it's explained on the thread].
i am getting the 16GB. i am tired of waiting. I have one last question though. Can this in any way cause any type of damage on my device?
It's allow usb and AC charging or only usb ?
Awesome news, even though I just bought a regular OTG cable about a week ago for a $1.50 (still waiting for it to be delivered from China to the USA [NJ]). Since I just got a full-time job I'm going to sell my 8 GB and get one of the 32 GB versions when they become available so I won't have to worry about the extra cable
Can anybody confirm that it effectively works ?
Also, It would be good to to know:
- which Y-USB-OTG cable is used ?
- which power source, i.e. from a PC (500 mA) or a charger (2 A) ?
Huh? I have this already in my kernel for a while now... This is NOT something new

Can you tell us some details ?
I am a little confused. The link says...
When a host mode adapter was recognized, charging of USB slave devices will NOT be activated and instead vbus will be raised in order to accept external charge.
If I want to use something that requires external power like a usb thumb drive, and the charging of usb slave devices is not activated; where does the slave device get the power to function? Is that shared off of the Y cable?
I know exactly what your talking about I have one for my old touchpad, ill try it on my nexus 7 see if it works.

Excited!
Can't wait for this! I'll be staying on top of this topic for awhile.
Alright I tried it using stock rooted using motleys kernel and while I could use a powered usb hub with 2 storage devices and a keyboard It wouldn't charge the N7 simultaneously. Although it didn't drain any power from the device either. Now this could be because of what I'm running or even one of the cords since I won't have a chance till the morning to test a couple more scenarios. All in all it definitely should be possible but may require a different kernel/rom etc. Though the OP asked the question regarding doing it w/o cm10 so ill try and stay within those parameters. On the touchpad I used to do it with cm9, as it was necessary especially with that device mostly only working with its 2amp charger. The reason I would only question cords used is I had previous trouble with an older kindle cable and when I tested it on a device I needed 1.5a it was hovering around 1.35a using my multimeter. Which was causing my Touchpad not to charge because it requires alot of power to charge. Ill update you on any progress and see I'f I can find the link foe the Ycable which I got on amazon awhile back.

I'm gonna have to do this. With this I will be able to finish my otg case
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I just read the code for the patch, its definitely looking like it will rely on the kernel as atleast in cm, USB slave charging mode needs to be suspended when recognized as host adapter. Regardless, I believe another Dev already implemented this and I'm sure others will.

Yeah. Now I'm toying with the idea of mounting a network share from a NAS-enabled router and put that in that in the car instead...effectively freeing up the USB port for full normal charging. I don't really like this route though because I suspect waiting for the router to boot every time the car is started will slow things down.

Sorry to say, I have yet to see a powered OTG cable in a retail store, even my geeky local "has a majority of stuff Monoprice carries" store does not have this particular type of cable.
If B&H Photo/Video has these in stock, it should work (but it'll cost more than getting the OTG cable on eBay)
Pioneer DJC-WeCAi 2.6' DJ Controller Cable - $29.00
Neutrik NAUSB-B USB Female Type-A to Type-B Converter - $5.21 (If you can find an equivalent that's not designed for panel mount, all the better)
Comprehensive On-The-Go USB A Female to Micro USB B Male Adapter Cable (4") - $2.99
-OR- NTW USB Type A Female To Micro USB Type B 5-pin On-the-Go (OTG) Pigtail Adapter - 4" - $5.99
-OR- StarTech Micro USB Male to USB OTG Host Adapter Female (5") - $5.99
$37.20 or $40.20 (if you go with a more-expensive OTG adapter) plus tax...
more expensive than the Chromecast itself but everyone has priorities.
Connections would be:
Pioneer cable RED A (flat) end --> Chromecast wall power adapter
Pioneer cable BLACK A (flat) end --> USB OTG adapter cable
Pioneer cable B (square) end --> USB A-B converter --> plug your USB Stick in here
USB OTG adapter cable --> Chromecast
You might find the right parts to get this cheaper, you just need to plan it out in your head. I was just sticking with stuff B&H has since they're in NYC.
Thanks,
I was planning a visit to B&H, but now it became mandatory.
I'll try the one from #3. I could wait until I get home, but can't leave NYC without rooting or bricking my Chromecast, in my hotel room.

Just so we're 100% clear, you'll need 3 total pieces to make it work - the Pioneer cable, the USB A female to B female adapter, and one of the OTG cables.
I also hope you've already checked your serial number against the rootable serial numbers and you know that the hotel's TV may not have HDMI enabled, and even if it does, its WiFi probably won't allow Chromecast to work.
If you brought your own wireless router, then you only have to deal with the TV though. Actually, if possible, I would take everything you need
with you to B&H. If you explain what you're trying to do, they might let you borrow an input on one of their TVs - then you won't have to worry about the hotel TV being locked, unless you already know it's not.
Good luck!
Just to add these cables are usefull for more than just hacking a Chromecast.
I use one to connect Hard Drives to my Xoom (Tablet) since my ROM supports OTG.
Sn are 3920 3921 3922, this shouldn't be a problem. Ref cables I'll take a look at the links later at the hotel. Thanks for your input.

No, you still have to use the wall plug that came with the tablet since it uses a different voltage than normal microUSB chargers. You can use the wall plug that came with the tf700 however.

Warning: This will not work with our TF701!!!!!! Read the Q&A below the product description !!
should the one for the tf700t also work?
The adapters mentioned that work with the 701 are all usb-2.
Does anyone know of a usb-3 adapter that will work?

I'm considering getting a TF701T, does anyone know if you could use this to charge the device? It'd be nice to know I have a backup if the proprietary USB cable fails.

Also can you simultaneously power the device and provide input using a usb hub(plug in keyboard and mouse for example)?
I went to the computer store. Bought the following:
The adapter which is 2.0 by the way.
USB 3.0 HUB with Power Adaper.
A male to A male cable.
While connected to a the HUB, and while the device is on its says "NOT CHARGING". I turn it off(tablet), Not getting a charge while connected to a the hub. It also drained it while the tablet is off. Nevermind the hub for power.
NO CHARGE FROM HUB
While connected to the PC it drained the power down to 6% then went back up to 50%. Not sure about that because it seemed to charge while it was off.
NO CHARGE FROM PC
As for the power adapter that comes with the tablet to it. Not charging while ON. Turn it off and no charge.
NO CHARGE FROM ASUS POWER ADAPTER
SO no it doesnt charge in any practical sense from this VIVO adapter as far as i can tell. Maybe its the MALE to MALE cable. I dont know. But its not worth trying if there a chance of drain killing it.
Unfortunately from the adapter there is no media connection or usb debugging to pc or usb hub afiak.
NO MEDIA CONNECTION OR USB DEBUGGING
The good news is that the device can connect to the USB HUB and the keyboard , mouse and thumb drive work flawlessly together.
