[Q] Stable Rom/Kernel for Daily Use - LG Optimus 4X HD

Hello everyone,
So I'm planning to "fix" my friend's Optimus 4X HD because the phone is super laggy and battery is extremely bad running the stock 20C ROM. I've tried flashing the official ProBam but the battery is still pretty bad and performance not that good. Given that ProBam is not supported properly in here, I'm assuming it may not have all the optimization offered by the P880-specific ROMs available around here.
However, I want to install something that would be sufficient for use without any noticeable issues. So it's not features I'm looking for but stability, performance and good battery life.
My question is, what do you guys suggest as a good ROM/Kernel combination which would work as a daily driver?
Also, I noticed there's an issue with compatibility between the latest CM nightlies and available kernels, would appreciate some advice on this.
Thanks for your time!

I recommend you Vanir Rom from 101713 newer version give me fc phone.
Deactivate all Animations and flash Demetris Play or Prime Kernel (i recommend download the toolbox from arararagi because it can increase charing speed and saturate the screen with colors then flash prime it is compitable.
You will have a snappy phone.

Thanks for your reply Have you tried latest Vanir nightly with the AnyKernel build of Prime? From what I understood, this shouldn't FC phone any more. Just asking if there's any benefit of flashing the latest build or 101713 as you suggested.

Trying Vanir from 102613 with Any Kernel of Iodak 8.5 no fc of phone.

Iodak Anykernel with no tweaks is stuck on userspace cpuquiet. It will drain ur battery really fast when screen is on

I flashed Vanir 101713 with Optimus Prime 2.70 as suggested by Nemeziz 56th. The phone is super snappy and battery seems much better so far. I faced issues with telephony as the phone struggled to connect to the mobile network until I loaded the modified RIL based on Flying_Bear's tutorial (thanks for that). Not sure if it would've worked eventually without any modifications, this is a bit confusing...
Another problem I faced today is that the screen refused to turn on after the alarm went off, I read this happened to other users as well. Is it a ROM issue or kernel?
Do you guys suggest I update to the latest Vanir nightly with AnyKernel Optimus Prime instead? If so, do I need to factory reset or is it safe to just dirty flash?

Should be fine to dirty flash.
However I assume you have unlocked the bootloader and flashed CWM (Or TWRP) so make a backup before you do, just in case.
Don't know if it's still the case but WWJB v008 kernel is incompatible with Vanir (even the Vanir specific-pack) so don't try that one.
There's an init.d script floating around somewhere that will fix CPUquiet on Anykernel Iodak, I'll see if I can find it for you.

Carbom ROM, Vanir and Probam can be used in a daily basis (They are in my order of preference). All of them with their default kernel cause many custom kernels are having some wakelock problems in later days....

Thanks for your input I might give Carbon a try, seems nice as well. But ProBam with its stock kernel is definitely a no-go for me, was horrible in my case.

Do you mean Iodak with the init.d fix-script would be a better option than Optimus Prime?

I can't give you a straight answer on that sadly, I don't know enough about the different kernels to make a choice myself tbh.
I've tried them all, and see the different options in trickstermod but I have no idea how to test which one is better for me or even decide what I want in a kernel.
But anyway was just saying there's a fix for the CPUquiet if you want to try Iodak.

Try liquidsmooth -zaiben and slim bean also since they are great too.

What about PAC? I'm running a nightly from 2 days ago on my SGS2 i9100G and it seems pretty stable and smooth. Do you recommend I try it on P880 given there's no maintainer for it here?

I was on CM nightlies, now I flashed Vanir nightly and its great

as they said install the latest vanir you find. u can update it to latest version from settings. but later why change kernel ? its just fine as it is , stable and battery drain is low enough. anyway when he will install the next update , the kernel will go back to default. are you gonna reinstall the kernel at your friends phone at every rom update ?.......

No I'm looking foe something good enough without needing to update later

no updates ? windows xp still have updates after a million years. ubuntu 12 were almost perfect and of course they have updates. everything has updates , dont think bad for updates

So there are many combinations of stable rom/kernel.
For me Slimbean 2.1 + OptimusPrime 2.7 or iodak8.5repacked works perfect.
And this software saved my 4X from selling out

I vote for this.
but if you don't use any video recording, CM9-Kang by owain already can be used for daily.
it's fast & stable enough if using default config.
I'm pretty happy with what I have in my sig.
However, I would test drive the phone for a couple of weeks if I were you. There have been users reporting very bad battery life that returned the phone and got a much better one.
So personally I would test-drive every functionality of the phone: 3G, wi-fi, bluetooth, GPS, etc and make sure everything is working fine before going for "warranty voiding activities"

Thats also what i'm using right now, also with ironkrnL (80 uv-log-su-rld), Chainfire3D and my own sd-fix. But in cause of the missing hw acc, i posted the cm7 variant
+1 for cm7 kang by temasek (with stock kernel).
I dont see anyone talking about one of the best ROMs with all custom like features with excellent smoothness and best performance....Django ROM with Stefan's or Spica's Kernel....it virtually flies...
try it man....you will know

watch the flag system!
You have to change the filename before flashing, i recommend to NOT use "jrnl"!
And never flash it with touch-cwm, it would kill your system/data partitions.

Good support- every Weekend a new update.

I guess question was about fastest and most stable ROM, not about "stable and fast enough". ICS on P990 is highly unstable for now. I'm using ICS for daily use and i don't complain, but there's always something that isn't working as it suppouse to. So at this moment CM7 isn't only more stable then ICS, it's faster too. Android 4.0 doeasn't even have hw acceleration yet.

Agreed, at this moment CM7 is much more stable and also faster, i tried CM9 but some apps didn't work and sometimes the phone was getting slow all of the sudden not to mention the browser was always crashing, im using CM7 now and its so fast and stable
You can use CM7 and see it flying, but without some of the phone features, like video call (I'm not talking about Skype or viber, just the native one), smart share, divx, hdmi video resize... Or you can try one of stock roms with the great kernels from here and have a full phone.

Thanks for all the replies. Will try out soon. Also, I have noticed that the battery life for the optimus 2x is so bad! With stock froyo last night, after just about 2hrs of some wifi and games, the battery has already gone down to 15%!!! That's how bad it is!
Is this normal? Should I return the phone to the store?
Also, will the gingerbread update and/or custom rom flashing bring about better life for the battery?

DjangoManouche 1.1 is highly recommended with V20q baseband and HP SR3R2 Kernel. After trying out many stock variants, Modaco ROMS, Thanatos and CM ROMS, I finally settled on this one as it has resolved all the issues I had with the phone and gives good battery and network performance.

[Q] ROM with NO random reboots? Stable?

Hi,
Can someone please recommend a stable ROM for the I8190N? It needs to be light, customisable, stable and preferably 4.2.2 or above....
I would really appreciate it if replies address the following:
Please only suggest a ROM if you have had random reboots on another ROM, then flashed a ROM and the random reboots stop....
Already flashed and have had issues with:
CyanogenMod 11.0 (maclaw and AOKP)
CyanogenMod 10.2 (maclaw and OliverG)
Light by somin
Chameleon OS 0.8
Anything "golden"
A deodexed stock ROM and custom kernel would be fine.....
Thanks!!

I meant to say in my OP that Dmodv6 was excellent - started flashing others because I'm a serial flasher (have four android devices) and wanted a newer android version.... if you kitkat Dmod, I'll consider you a living god!!
I've got stock AMJ2 from sammobile and plan to deodex, root and de-bloat.
The stock rooted XXAMJ3 - isn't for the 8190N - would I expect issues if i flashed it? Ignore me, i know it would NOT be a good idea!
Thanks!!

Well, that depends on which governor you used and how many apps which sync every minute you had.
Luckily on custom roms you can change the governor.
You can change the behaviour or disable background processes as well. (I recommend the application ''Greenify'' for that).
If I didn't convince you now I'm afraid I have to tell you that there are no stable custom roms except stock based..

[Q] Suggest a ROM please

First of all, a million thanks for developers who are still working on this great device!
I have been using unofficial CyanogenMod 10.1 for vivo by dla5244. Haven't looked for anything else for quite some time, but now I am thinking of changing it. Could someone suggest any other no-Sense ROM? I need -
- Better or similar battery life
- Faster application launch
- More stability (less bug)
- and JellyBean at least
Thanks in advance...
Try CM 10.2 by szezso recently updated check the last page.
Or try CM 10.1 again by szezso with latest kernel on last page.
And the best ROM is again by szezso which CM10.
I would say try all of these and choose according to your use. But my vote goes to CM10 by szezso.
And I have tried all the ROMS available for this device

Thanks a lot, Iqbal. Unfortunately, the problem is I don't have enough time and patience to try out all ROMs along with apps I use.
Could you tell me which of them gave you the best battery life, and also with which kernel?
What improvement I can expect with me coming from unofficial CM10.1 by dla5244?
Also, which kernel do you recommend with CM10 szezso especially?

CM10 by szezso with his latest kernel link: http://d-h.st/n9T
It has best battery life among all the kernels. The kernel is for CM10.1 but will work with all CM versions.

Just a heads up, I would NOT recommend this if you need a lot of battery. the KitKat build by Szeszo is still in development and still a number of bugs to fix. Along with that, the battery isn't very good. If you want good battery, I would highly recommend CyanVivo10.1 by Szeszo. Its 4.2.2 (although I think you know this ) and its pretty much fixed. DO NOT flash the latest kernel. The latest kernel seems to have a slight issue with CPU wakelocks and, as a result, has a lot of battery drain. Perhaps Szeszo will fix it and release another version later.

In engineering it's called a trade-off, in this case performance for battery life. Granted that there are a few bugs which, once fixed, will improve the situation but for know I guess that's the compromise you have to make (and hope that the developer can fix the bugs soon )

So far the JC build is great. I forget how much I miss AOSP. I'm loving the hover and having Halo again. I installed V4A and the volume is great.
After running for awhile, I wasn't able to get the ROM to sleep at all. Wakelock detector really didn't show anything and neither did better battery stats.

After running for awhile, I wasn't able to get the ROM to sleep at all. Wakelock detector really didn't show anything and neither did better battery stats.

I can confirm on the dorimanx build, that the same thing is keeping it from sleeping as well.
Seems like a lot of cm base Roms are having the issue. Gotta love cm butchering commits.

Do core 3 and 4 not respond to any changes in CPU frequency governors? The best way to test would be to try and change the governor from conservative to performance. What should happen is that core 3 and 4 should be going full blast on the performance governor but not the conservative governor.
Thanks!

I actually tried both builds and it didn't sleep on either. I won't have time tonight but I'll restore tomorrow and give it a whirl.

Seems like cm pushed a fix for the sleep issue, at least on crDroid. I had an issue with it not sleeping, then after the build today, no issues at all.

Good to know. I'll flash this over when there's a new build. I'd prefer the JC kernel if possible just because I won't have to redo anything on my backup. I've commenced operation "Drink Beer" already so it won't happen today. Happy 4th to all!

Thanks for the update! I'll hunt down the commit and compile soon! Enjoy July 4th =)
I'm running though some trouble with SystemUI repetitive force closing on my latest AOSB builds...I have a hard time tracing what's wrong. Whenever I get a build running properly, I'll post it right away!
New builds!
Alright everyone, I've posted new builds for the vs980 with the Dorimanx and the Render kernels. I haven't had a chance to test these out yet, my phone is getting back from warranty replacement.
Also, you'll notice there are d800 builds present. I'm not going to start a thread in the LG G2 AT&T forums because AOSB officially supports d800. However, please feel free to use these. I haven't yet tested out the d800 builds either.
EDIT: I haven't seen any changes on the Beanstalk github page, so I'm going to focus my efforts on compiling AOSB for now.

I'll download and give them a whirl tomorrow. Have you read anything about mms issues? I know I was seeing it and I've read others were too.

I downloaded and installed the render version, constant system.ui errors on the set up screen.

Hi all, new build is up which is compiled with ALL linaro 4.9 toolchains. I have a vs980 in hands now, and have tested it out. ROM works flawlessly. Kernel, even more so =D

there isnt Ivan aosp?
yes there is one... But it doesn't have any customisatons option.. And my mobile gets easily even in moderate use..
How about Miui V7. Did you try?
I want stock like nexus.. miui lags
There were a lot of stable cm and aosp+ builds of KitKat. Download 1 of them and flash a modern kernel for lp or one of them that has KitKat support and it should work just fine. I flashed carbon rom then flashed xcelerate build 65 kernel without any issues booting or functioning. I never used it long enough to confirm random reboot was gone but as that was related to kernel issue the odds are it wasn't going to ever happen

Me too. I don't really like MIUI. Why don't you try Lollipop ROM like Blisspop. It's quite stable, no bugs, no SOD, customizable, you can use as daily ROM. I used Extended Partition, TWRP and TK Gapps.
It is better than MIUI, I think.
lollipop don't have good battery backup
this is not entirely true ... the difference is about 10 or up to 20% in favor of miui (stable) ... the latest china developer MIUI rom also suffers from poor battery life... sacrifice 1h (sot) use of the phone is quite profitable ... in my eyes.
Sot may not see a huge difference but with standby time KitKat blew lp out of the water unless you didn't flash gapps in lp. That's my opinion and experience anyway. Gapps in lollipop is always a huge battery drain I've never been able to fully control even by turning everything off in app ops and etc.

u can use xposed(gravity box) in Ivan's aosp for customizations

There are any issues with your configuration ?
Only real problem I seen was a slower charge and the back camera didn't work and the front camera quality was crap. If it had a working camera I would honestly still be using carbon KitKat or even pa aosp+ KitKat which didn't have the slow charging issue but didn't look as nice though either.
Sorry my quotes no longer work Tapatalk has to keep screwing up a good thing and turning it into crap

out of all the custom roms i tried, Ivan's aosp kitkat was the most stable and I had no problems with it except the capacitive button light issue which wasn't a major concern for me, for customizations xposed was my way to go. I highly recommend you to try it if stability is your concern ✌
hope this helped you

Wi-Fi worked with Xcelerate kernel on KitKat?

I wouldn't recommend it because the only good KitKat rom for this phone was Ivan's. Pa wasn't bad but you won't have a camera anymore. I never tested it on Ivan's but I did test it on carbon and WiFi worked fine on it if I remember correctly. The slow charging (which is fixable flashing a boot.img from a rom with faster charging) and not having a working camera kept me from keeping it. I still wouldn't recommending going to KitKat unless you can persuade a Dev to make a fully functional KitKat rom. I seen a couple devs say they would but never followed through and with all the real devs working on marshmallow your not going to see any help there.

On PA with Xcelerate, Wi-Fi didn't work and also there was frequent android.media force closes. Not with other kernels though. Camera of course doesn't work.
I didn't stayed long on the ROM. But I did got a random reboot type once (in PA the phone simply dies and u have to hard reboot). Camera doesn't work of course.
Ivan's ROM is laggy af. The scrolling is laggy everywhere and etc. I don't like the custom kernels as the phone heats (little bit less with Xcelerate). And not quite sure whether the upcoming Xcelerate build will be compatible with MIUI.
Only MIUI is the usable Kitsap ROM quite actually. Would have been cool if Xiaomi upgraded the Android version, which is not gonna happen at all IMO
