Xperia Z1 Bluetooth connection problem - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After getting the highly anticipated Z1 C6903, for the last few days, I have been enjoying the speed and flawless operation of the phone however, came across some connectivity issues and I m hoping its only my phone otherwise we have a bug in the latest firmware.
Let me get to it, I have been trying to make use of the Drag&Drop, where you just connect phone or computer via bluetooth and drag files into the connected device, very nice way of transferring files and pics but I haven't been able to transfer anything to my MacBook Pro though its connected via bluetooth.
I figured for the last few days, that the bluetooth connectivity keeps on dropping, I did however share images and videos with my TV, works fine but bluetooth has been the deal breaker for me.
Its funny that I can transfer files from my MacBook Pro to my Z1 but can't transfer anything from my phone to the computer. Seeing the bluetooth connectivity on my computer keeps on dropping to "not connected"
I would really appreciate if someone has come across similar problems and found resolution or if someone can help with resolving the issue, will be highly appreciated.

Rather than create a new thread, I will reply to this one as I am experiencing similar problems, hopefully someone has some suggestions.
My bluetooth keeps dropping after a while if I stop playing music and I am forced to reconnect multiple time. Weird thing is that when this happens, I am still connected and still can take calls on the bt device, but I have to either disconnect/reconnect for music or use the throw options a few times on the walkman app.
Is this the nature of the bluetooth or is there something else I can do to resolve this?

On your mac you have to enable blutooth sharing in system. Voila - it works. :good:

Odd Bluetooth Issue (Tilt)

For some reason, whenever I connect my tilt to another device via bluetooth, the connection is very poor (for lack of a better term). Let me explain the symptoms:
When I'm listening to music on my bluetooth stereo headset, it will randomly "blink out" and go from a second, to a few seconds without playing any sound. Then pick up again.
When I try to use bluetooth PAN, it will randomly disconnect at non-regular intervals.
I can't speak to the PAN, but I know that the bluetooth headset works flawlessy with my computer, so I think that the problem likely resides in the phone somewhere.
Any suggestions as to what I might be able to try would be greatly appreciated. Also, as a side not, I've used a few different ROM's and radios, and had the problems regardless. I'm wondering if perhaps I have a hardware problem and need to get my phone repaired? Is there any way to better test? Thanks
Well, I've e-mailed HTC about the issue and am awaiting a response. Looks like it might go back for warranty work though.

I've had my Nexus S for a couple of weeks now and am really enjoying it.
However, bluetooth audio streaming is proving to be a royal pain.
I am using a Motorola T505 in my car.
The symptoms are pretty consistent.
If I reboot my phone then the audio will stream over bluetooth flawlessly.
If I try to stream without rebooting the phone then it will stutter and stop randomly.
My diagnosis is that there are processes running on the phone that interfere with the bluetooth or take up memory that is needed for the streaming to work smoothly.
I have read that wifi can be a culprit, but even with this switched off I have a problem.
I know that my drive home takes me through areas with varying degrees of reception. The phone does switch from 3G to edge to gprs and there are areas where the signal is quite weak. But if this was a problem then it would have an effect whether I had rebooted the phone first or not.
I have tried installing Advanced Task Manager and using this to kill programs that are running but this does not prevent the problem. Even if I am able to get free memory up to 120mb + I still get the stuttering.
I'm determined to get to the bottom of the problem as it is just about my only issue with the phone and it is a PITA to reboot before my commute.
I am aware that there are all sorts of processes running on the phone and using system resources but I don't know what is safe to kill and what isn't.
Should I use a different task manager?
Is there a particular app which might be causing a problem?
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this further would be gratefully received.
I am presuming that I am not the only one who has this issue?

I stream via bt to my car stereo without any issues all the time. What is the audio bitrate you are streaming?

I stream mainly podcasts. The bit rate will be whatever the default is.
Since I first posted I have had fewer problems with stuttering. I did uninstall poweramp. That may or may not have any bearing on things.
I now find that auto connection is a bit flaky. Sometimes it will connect, other times I have to do it manually.
Overall not the best experience but very nice when it works.

I have no problems streaming audio from my Nexus S to my car's audio deck (Pioneer P7000BT) and I play anything from my music apps (pandora, slacker, etc..) to my songs in my mp3 library. If you aren't on a custom rom, perhaps trying CM7 and a good kernel could help you narrow down your problem.

Bump!!!
Brand new Nexus S owner with the EXACT same problem, it's driving me nuts.
Unless I do a reboot on the phone or sometimes just a manual disable & re-enable on the bluetooth, it will keep having 1-2 second audio drops right in the middle of playback. I have a Kenwood KDC-BT838U deck. The bluetooth connection between the deck and phone never breaks. It never disconnects or disassociates in any form as far as I can tell. It's clearly a problem with my Nexus S only because I also have an iPhone 4 and it works flawlessly all the time (just not unlimited data on that phone!)
It's really annoying that others in this thread say they don't have the issue at all. I have streamed off Youtube HD and radio stations via TuneIn Radio.
It's super annoying considering I got the unlimited data package for exactly this reason.
It's only been 4 days of having the phone so maybe I'll go try and exchange tomorrow.

Try disabling wifi while you streaming through bluetooth. Wifi radio can interfere with some headunits.

First thing I tried!
I've moved on to cm7.0.2 and it is still a bit flaky, although not as bad as it was.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern. Sometimes it's fine other times it's not.
Interesting, I have had a Kenwood KDC-BT945U for sometime now and have used it with many different phones. My Nexus One had a very flaky connection to it, my HTC G2 connected fine but would give me audio drop outs randomly every few minutes which was SO ANNOYING, Iphone work just fine and my Nexus S works without issue also. I had assumed it was just an issue with HTC phones. Are you currently running a custom ROM? The only time I was ever able to get my Nexus One working the way it should was to use a Sense Rom.
I upgraded to CM7 and it's as bad as ever, didn't seem to help at all.
I also went through a full exchange at the store, and the brand new one straight out of the plastic did the same thing. Must be the phone itself is all I can think of.
All I have left to try is a new kernel, I can't figure out which kernel to update to if I'm using the Mobilicity AWS Nexus S
If you are having problems with bluetooth streaming and have a task killer installed... Uninstall it...
Task killers are problem makers...

It has persisted through 2 exchanges which leads me to believe theres a problem with the hardware itself or something.
Rooted, custom kernels, nothing fixes it.

I use my Nexus S every day to stream music over BT/A2DP to my car stereo (Kenwood Excelon KDC-X994) and it works without any issues, and it always has since I got it. I've rooted it and am using a custom kernel and radio, but left the OS at stock 2.3.4. But it also worked fine with my head unit right out of the box before I made any changes to it.
I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions or solutions for you. In my own experiences it seems like certain BT chipsets just don't work well with certain pieces of BT hardware, so maybe there's just "bad blood" (so to speak) between the BT chipset in the Nexus S and your BT car hardware...?
Sorry I don't have any ideas to offer to try and help.

What app are you using? I saw you mentioned podcasts and I have seen this problem on my EVO with google listen if i initiate play from the head unit to continue listening. I saw this on stock and CM7. However I have not been able to replicate it as of late. have you tried a differnt program or even just restarting BT? That is what fixed it for me back then.

To the Gentlemen having problems with Bluetooth streaming. I hate asking but have you tried a different device as the bluetooth receiver if possible? A lot of the users replying are using pretty nice head units and in my experience with my Golf ive had no problems. well thats lie.. i have issues with the turn by turn navigation audio not working. It cuts the music (as it should) but the navigation audio is either non existent or extremely quiet (yes ive checked the navigation volume on the device).
But yeah long story short just wondering what other bluetooth receivers you have tried. Good luck.

I have the blackberry little gateway as well. When it connects it's great (no stuttering etc), but my phone won't always connect to it when I get in my car. Sometimes turning BT on/off will then get it to connect, but it's random. The sure-fire way to get it to connect is rebooting the phone. Not sure why that is, but very annoying. Does your NS connect to your blackberry gateway every time without fail?

Ah that's a relief to hear actually ! I wonder if it's specific to the blackberry gateway, and some other brand A2DP receiver would not have the problem...
Do you know of any others like it? I would be willing to try, gets pretty annoying.

Trying to stream music from Google Play to my Big Jambox over Bluetooth. Sounds like a CD is skipping and then it eventually pauses the music.

The only problem I have is the bluetooth in my car is always on. The phone wants to stay connected to it even when I'm in the house. Makes for a frustrating time when I'm doing work in the yard and trying to listen to something. I will plug in the headphones and after a while it will switch to the car's bluetooth.
Short of that the bluetooth connection has been stable and used a lot.

Blue tooth connection issue
Ok, let me be as descriptive as possible to my condition/experience.
I went for a walk today with Droid Turbo in tow, blue tooth connections to my Moto 360 (synced with Run Keeper) and Beats bluetooth earphones, playing a downloaded podcast, to avoid weak signal/streaming issues.
The sound coming thru the connected headphones was choppy, cutting in and out. Not listenable.
I thought the Moto active display were being tripped over and over again in my pocket, causing the choppiness of the bluetooth audio.
I turned off all the Moto active settings, as well as double twist to open camera app.
After turning off all those settings, it seems to play without a hitch. For the first couple of minutes. Then it would alternate between continuous playback and chopped playback, couple minute at a time, back and forth.
I am now done with that walk, sitting down typing this up and bluetooth thru Beats are working flawlessly.
It must be related to motion of the phone as I walk that causes the chopped playback, i dont have a clue.
Anyone have similar and create a setting profile that eliminates this?
Only issue with Bluetooth is with my mazda cx5, connects faster than my note 3, plays well except sometimes with play music the display won't advance to the next song but the song plays. Also sometimes the skip track won't work. Had zero issues with the note 3, hoping the next update fixes these problems. That's the problem with being an early adapter, but love the phone so far, miss having viper4android and pandora patcher, but can live without them, but keeping fingers crossed for root, although I seriously doubt this phone will get it.

I had what sounds like the same problem. At first I thought I was getting notifications that would make the Bluetooth connection to my car cut out, but eventually realized that it was indeed garbled and sounded like a CD skipping quietly. I also had horrible battery life and touch screen issues even after a factory reset. Returned it and I'm using my GNex until my N6 shows up.

Fortunately for me the CD skipping stopped. Seems it worked itself out for me. [emoji1]
My turbo has a terrible time staying connected to my pebble, so much so that I'm attempting to set up llama to periodically check for connectivity, and if it finds none, reset Bluetooth and attempt a reconnect.
No audio problems, but I've never tried for more than a half hour or so.

I run regularly with the Turbo in my pocket, with BT Headphones (Motorola H11), BT heart rate monitor (Polar), with Runkeeper app tracking my run and music playing from Google Play music. Works very well. Once in a while, I do get a little skipping (1-2 minutes of skipping on 1 out of every 5 runs?). I do usually turn my wifi off when I'm going for a run. I run by a few saved hotspots, and I think that the skipping is related to wifi attempting to connect to a weak hotspot.
Just curious... The ones having issues with BT connections. Are you by chance connected to Wi-Fi? I've always had issues with Bluetooth on my devices when connected to 2.4ghz WiFi. No issues with 5ghz. They're too close to the same frequency. My note 2014 can't even keep a connection to my work 2.4ghz Wi-Fi and stream over a Bluetooth connection. Drops it every time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the issue here. When I first got this phone, music over my bluetooth earbuds would skip like crazy while I was walking across campus. Eventually I noticed that if I set the wifi frequency band to 5GHz only or turned it off completely, then the stuttering would stop. Likely the stuttering was from my phone trying to connect to access points as I walked through campus. So now I just have tasker set up to disable the wifi whenever I'm connected to my earbuds. Not a proper solution but it works for now. Never had a problem like this with my Galaxy S3, though. Hopefully it can be fixed in some sort of software update.
I've had what sounds like skipping, but it only happens when the phone is either connecting or disconnecting from WiFi and I am streaming music, that wasn't uncommon with previous phones though so I wouldn't consider it a Turbo issue. I stream almost every day for a total of about 1-2 hours.

Rixanu - I think you're on to something... I'll give my "story" and hopefully someone a little more savvy than us can help figure it out.
I switched over from the good ole Galaxy Nexus about a month ago. No major complaints on the Turbo yet as we await Lollipop, with the exception of this Bluetooth issue. I have the Bluetooth paired in the car, and a set of headphones - music and everything worked perfectly on the GNex through the Bluetooth. Now, primarily, it's often choppy (mustic anyway) - for reference, when listening to music I listen via Google Play (all access or whatever they call it now). I figured the choppiness was related to the fact that the music was being streamed since most wasn't downloaded yet, but after very limited experimenting, I believe it must have to do with the physical Bluetooth radio. I had noticed in the past that when the music streams perfectly, a lot of times if I pick it up to check an email, text, etc., it becomes choppy, but thought that was strange since the RAM should be more than sufficient to multitask without choppiness. On my way home from a friend's, I played around and stuck my hand over various parts of the back of the phone, and would press the phone against my pant, etc., and could effectively interfere completely with the connection such that it would be only silent, and not even choppy. Yet, while the music wasn't playing, the track continued to playback on the device and when the music would pick up after I moved the phone, it would be 10 seconds or whatever later as if it had been playing straight through the whole time.
I haven't tested this theory too much yet, but I think combined with your issue, there's certainly something there. Unfortunately, I frequent these parts in order to find answers to these types of issues and don't have the solutions myself.

Found a fix that worked for him and for me. You can try this:
Install SetCPU (I used a free app No-frills Cpu controll) with Governor: Interactive, CPU: Max 2265MHZ & Min 652
This totally stopped my bluetooth audio issues. Of course you need to be rooted to use these tools.

Just an update for all y'all... My brother has the same phone and he's sort of oblivious to these types of issues, so I didn't trust his take on whether he was having the same problem. Anyway, I tested his phone on my BT devices and his phone had no issue whatsoever, even though mine did as I flipped back and forth between a pairing of the two.
Long story short, I called Verizon who connected me through Motorola and they're shipping me a new one, though they required me to put a $500 hold on my cc until I send this POS one back.

I would be happy for suggestions. My bluetooth headphone keeps losing connection to the phone, and then reconnecting. Now, this only happens when I'm not listening, but since I tend to keep the headphones around my neck when I've paused playback I hear the reconnection beeping, it's annoying. When I resume listening the headphone may, or may not be connected.
I've made sure all the other bluetooth devices have bluetooth off, so I don't think the phones are trying to connect to something else. I read in another post that someone thought they might be having trouble because their car bluetooth was always on. I don't know if mine is, but I can tell you it's a pain to connect the phone to the car. Every time I do I need to go through several menus and, of course, this can only be done in Park, so I doubt the car is trying to take over the phone's bluetooth. :fingers-crossed:

Since the MM upgrade, my phone has stopped connecting to my BT headphones automatically when I turn the headphones on. I have to manually connect them, by selecting them out of the list of paired devices. Is this just a change in how MM handles BT?
My issues with BT happen with both Lollipop & MM. My Turbo will randomly turn off BT and when I go to turn it back on I see the BT icon flash a couple of times quickly but it never turns back on. I found a remedy for the issues by using an app called Bluetooth Auto Connect but even with that I still have the issues now.
The phone also turns BT on by itself, even after I have manually disabled it
I'm sure the phone knows that it's going to be replaced with a Pixel and is messing with me as much as possible until then.
Any ideas?

Wondering if anyone else are having issues with the bluetooth on the note 5. One issue I'm having is the connection to my galaxy gear disconnects and reconnects randomly and after a few disconnects seems like the phone just ignores the gear and manual connection only works 50% of the time other times I have to reset the phone to regain connection. Other problem Im having, which I cant figure out, is my car bluetooth stereo connects with no issue to my phone but when using calling it uses the car speakers for output audio but the phones mic for input audio. Tried my S5 and the stereo works perfectly. Any suggestions? I've tried wiping caches, unpairing repairing devices. Factory reset (which worked for about a few hours but started the same issues again). I was thinking it may be software related but no software or updates were installed between the factory reset and having issues again.
Yes I'm having the same problem with my gear s2 just got off the phone with tmobile there sending me a new note 5 hopefully it will fix it I'll update after the switch

i have Note5 stock Rom, no root. I also have a Gear watch (still on Android.. not Tizen, rooted, Null 23 Rom) Been using the Gear watch since launch with my then Note 3, Note 4 and now with Note5.
Overall no problems at all. Only replaced the watch battery a month back thats all.
My Bluetooth connection to all my devices has been overall, very good.
I am currently using my Gear with Note5. The Bluetooth connection is very, very good. i cannot recall it ever disconnecting from Note5. (if in acceptable distance.. +-
10 metres or so.) Overall Gear is working 100%.
Point i am making is according to my experience, Bluetooth connection with Note5 works fine... no disconnecting issues.
I know this doesn't solve your issues,

I'm wondering if I may have a hardware issue. If connected to a BT device (eg gear) and I move more than a couple ft from the device connection is lost. I'm very confused with my car stereo though, what would cause BT to split and use my phones mic and the stereos speaker not the stereo mic? Anyone ever experience a similar issue?

futher i can add,
i use Note5 Bluetooth
with following devices no issues. No disconnecting issues or any other issues.
Polor M400 Bluetooth Hart rate watch( re smart notifications) ,
Jam Bluetooth headset (streaming music) ,
Phillips Bluetooth dock.( streaming music.)
My Lenovo laptop,( Sending of pics, apps etc)
and use it to connect to my other Phone devices etc
Never had any issues with disconnecting.
Given that the devices are normally
about 2 meters apart when in use sometimes 10...12 meters.
I would suggest you get you device checked, as yes it does not seem right
that it disconnects so easy (when so near)

This might be an odd question but how would someone go about testing the phones BT, it connects just not stable. Only reason Im asking is I dont want to send it to samsung and have to wait 2-4 weeks and them to come back and say its working.

yes ,i understand, you don't want to wait for period of time ,w/o your phone. !!!
I would have maybe done some "little tests" , to get a better opinion of the Bluetooth issue ??
eg. Test your devices in environment/area where there is no interference , ( no concrete walls ,buildings ...an open area .No electric cables/towers )
An open area ,field or another locations than your home or workplace etc .
See what is you min. and max. distance on disconnection ,if it only occurs more at your home than another area .? Get some facts and maybe make a small video to illustrate your issue ?
and show it to "someone" in the know ???
eg ..If you bought phone through service provider show video to them ./Samsung ( i have a habit that when i have a issue ..........................
eg. broken roof tiles/wall socket /a damage car part ......etc etc ....
i would take photo's/video ,(with my phone and keep copy on my phone ) and when talking to "somebody" in the know/or send your device to Samsung ,show them photo's /video of issues. It helps them to understand your issues better ,
and maybe give you better advice on issue ?
Also ,try to compare you results with somebody with similar device ???

you might just learn something in process ,that can help ?

i just want to add another issue you should be aware .
Bluetooth v 4.2 (Note5 firmware ) and compatibility issues with other Bluetooth versions 3.0 ,v 4.0 v 4.1 etc ,To give you a real life example .......
On my Gear watch i use to have Bluetooth v 3.0 ( ? )
i was using my Note 3 ( at the time ).Then my Note 3 was upgraded to Bluetooth v 4.0 ,
when i started having disconnection issues .Also in Bluetooth settings on my Note3 ,device my Gear would not show up in paired devices or stick in list .
When my Gear Bluetooth firmware was upgrade to v 4.0,
i found the disconnection issues was resolved and my Gear then showed up in pair devices
I am not saying this is the issue,
but you should be aware of what Bluetooth firmware your other devices are using ...?????
Is it Bluetooth L E ( Low Energy ) version 4.2 or v 3.0, v 4.0 ,v 4.1,

So I got the new phone yesterday and so far everything is working perfectly no connection issues with the gear s2 it has been connected via bluetooth since yesterday afternoon when I receive the new phone

i've got such issues after restoring Note 5. i did reset gear to the factory settings and paired devices...
Thanks for the replies. After doing some testing and what not the only thing I can figure is a bad BT module/chip in the phone. Sent it in through my service provider today. Will post results when I gets it back. Using my old S3 for now until I gets it back, its like my phone shrunk and got sugnificantly slower lol.
update for anyone who is wondering or having the same prroblems. I got my phone back from samsung today, they replaced the main board in the phone. BT seems is working good now and the phone seems snappier than before. Thanks for the help. ☺

I dropped it off at telus (my service provider) and they sent it in for me. only took a couple days, I was surprised it was that fast. I live in NL, Canada and everyhting is usually slow shipping here.

Nokia 8 Bluetooth unusable with Airpods. Anyone else?

Just to open with this - I really like this phone and have been enjoying using it. Aside from the fairly poor WiFi range and the flaky NFC it is otherwise a really nice phone. There's just one other issue I have which is extremely frustrating:
I can't use it with my Airpods. Or at least, I can connect it but at some point the sound will crackle and cut off. If I wait it will occasionally crackle and come back on again but will cut in and out in a way that would drive anyone mad. I've tried fiddling with Bluetooth settings in developer options but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I've even tried a factory reset.
The Airpods work absolutely perfectly with every other device - no issues with the iPhone (expectedly) nor the S8, G6 or even my laptop. I can't 100% rule out a fault with the Airpods but given these facts it seems highly unlikely.
I wondered if anyone else used Airpods and had experienced issues and found a solution.
Not too interested if you've had no issues with your device, nor what you think of Airpods - I just want to see if I can get to the bottom of this, or the Nokia will have to go back.

Every few minutes the connection drops for a very short time.
The airpods don't support apt-x, but maybe it's the same problem.
My receiver shows a connection via apt-x, , but you can't find any apt-x support in the Nokia 8 specs.
But I had no problems with a friends portable speaker (non-apt-x).
I went back to cables

I’m wondering if the Nokia 8 just has rubbish connectivity, generally. If the Bluetooth chip is part of the WiFi chip then this would figure as it has the worst WiFi connectivity I’ve seen in recent years
Are you running Nougat or Oreo? From what I've heard, a lot of the bluetooth issues have been fixed in Oreo.

I wonder if yours is wonky, my Wi-Fi is excellent and i get get 75Mbit down 19Mbit up over 5Ghz through 2 brick walls, a floor up and at the opposite end of the house, i have not missed any payments using contactless via NFC and Bluetooth works fine via an Anker Bluetooth speaker and my JBL Bluetooth headphones.
Sorry for digging an old thread, but I still have the same problem even after a bunch of software updates.
My issue with the AirPods is that they do not work after they connect. I take them out of the case, they connect (as expected), but as soon as I start playing something the music/video pauses and the sound switches to speaker (if I press play again it plays out loud). To make them work I need to go to bluetooth settings, disconnect them and connect them again. Then they will work almost flawlessy (minor intrerruption from time to time).
I have no issue with other BT speakers. I also use the AirPods with an iPad and laptop and no issues there.
My Nokia 8 software is up to date. AirPods firmware the same (checked on the iPad).
I tried re-pairing after each software update. I tried changin BT settings (absolute volume - dev settings; contact sharing and HD Audio: AAC) but no improvements.
Any ideas what else can I try?
Search for Oreo and Bluetooth problems. It seams to be a general issue for this Android Version. I have problems connecting my Phone with the car, too.
