stolen laptop - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my laptop has been stolen, its hp.i had windows 8 installed in it. i saw it with my neighbour,it has already been formatted,so i have no proof, please what can i do to proof that its mine

Do you have the Windows 8 product keys for any installed OS or software? Unless a different OS has been installed or the thief has a different product key reformatting wouldn't change the original that was registered to you.

This is the windows phone 8 forum, not windows 8. Wrong section.
Anyway any laptop has an unique Serial Number (a sort of IMEI, let's call it like this even if it's not correct) that can't be changed because it isn't on the hard disk. How to see this serial number, there's a different method for each OEM. Sometimes it's visible in the BIOS (or in the UEFI settings), but often is fisicaly printed on the bottom of the laptop..so first of all find out how to display this number in your specific laptop model, and then if your neighbour's pc has the same serial number that was printed on your laptop's box (of course you need your laptop's box, or probably the serial number can be found on warranty papers?). Anyway it's possible to find this out.

no usb activity

First I want to say i really like this forum. It has al lot of info.
And I appoligize for my English, I'm from The Netherlands.
Now my question, ik recently(few days a go) bought a TytnII of a member of this forum (don't know his nick, doesn't matter) but when i came home I noticed that when I connected to my computer via USB, there was no activity at all.
I already tried to hard reset it to factory defaults, but with no luck.
Can any one help me out?
(I already tried to turn off the advanced at usb to pc connections, and also my active sync is okey because it does work for my qtek9100)
thanks very much.

When u plug it in, what does the led light(the one thet normaly blink green) do?
EDIT:there is a search function on this site. Try to look for "kaiser can not connect activesync" and try to read these threads.
This one looked similar, give it a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2204391
I already found that post, the problem is not just actuve sync, mycomputer does not respond at al, does not see a divice at the usb port or anything.

I really dont know what can cause this issue.
To find out about rom flashing, u better start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
when you got your new devcie did you install activsync from the new disc that came with it or did you assume activsync is all the same( as an owner of a htc univwersal i know activsync 4.1 will not operate the tytn 2 you have to use activsync 4.5 also what usb lead are you using try using a lead from a different device, those leads come with pretty much everything i have 6 and i only remember the tytn 2 one being an important one as i use the internet sharing a lot

But is there a chance that this solves my problem or isn't it worth the try?
you said that youd reset to factory settings, so the rom will be as good as itl get in its origional form.
so answer what usb lead you using, is it the one that was in the box with the phone
and
did you install the newer version of activsync from the disc that came from the new phones box

i downloaded the newest active sync (4.5) didn't work.
But why does windows xp not react at all when i plug it in? it should at least see new hardware added wright?
With lead you mean the usb-cable? (sorry ain't that good at english)
i think it's the original one, but offcourse because i can't say for sure because i didn't buy it in a store but second hand. He did give me the reciet an the original box and everything so i guess it's also the original cable.
Also i tried 4 diffirent ones.
well im afraid it looks more like a pc issue than a phone issue what os you got on your pc and give me all your specs, and please tell your windows is genuine
U can also try different cable, just to be sure its not the cable that is causing these problems.
maybe they sold you a device with a messed up usb port? maybe 1 of the 3 middle pins of the top set of pins when the device is face up is damaged..thats what happened to mine and you couldnt tell by looking at it...

Okey so that is pssible, well I believe it's only 6 months old, so I'll go to the store with it.
@ jayjay8585 and Mikulec
I appriciate your effort for helping out, but if you've read the posts, you would have read that i have an other pda that does work, so not a OS problem(and yes it's a legit OS ) and that i've used several different cables
Is there a way to test if it's just a broken usb ?
Laptop Doesn't See Tilt
I've got the same issue. Got mine second hand only about 2 weeks ago. I was told it was unlocked but it was not. Got the unlock code from AT&T. When I plug the usb cord into the laptop it charges but the computer doesn't recognize new hardware. Any help would be appreciated and what I find out I'll pass on.

Mine probably has a mainboard roblem because an other firmware was put on, Icontacted HTC and it will be picked up for repairing
I sometimes have a simulair issue... with me it is because the USB connector plugs are slightly out of place (in the phone).
You can bend than back with a thin knife or someting. (dont put to much pressure)
I assume from reading the other posts, you DO have Activesync installed, and you did try a different USB cable?
If so, did you try another USB port on your computer?

Can't connect to Windows Mobile Device Center via USB

Hi all,
I have a problem here after I upgraded my laptop to OS Windows 7 and installed Windows Mobile Device Center.
at first, I can connect to PC via USB (transfer file OK) but can't sync with MS Outlook 2007. and then at another connection, i lose my phone contact at my device (but only older contacts, new stored contacts still exist),
but now i can't connect at all. PC & Windows Mobile Device Center software not showing any activities.
I've tried to re-installed my Windows Mobile Device Center software and hard reset my TyTn II but still can't connect. Icon on PDA, only charging icon. I tried with connection via bluetooth and it works, but I prefer a connection w/ USB cable.
My question:
How can I enable the USB cable connection?
need your suggestion please...
Sorry for my bad English...
Hello kartonodeh

I am not sure what is the problem/difference althoug I am now installing the new Mobile device center. Try it too, it may work.

I can connect through 64 bit and not 32 bit, which is REALLY weird since 32 bit drivers are, you know, MORE. Anyway, its made by Microsoft, what do you expect. I believe its a marketing scam
Theory: Make a windows device = 200$ income
Make new Windows 7 = 200$ income
But thats probalby just 400$ from each user WHO HAS BOTH!!. well, thats not enough. Make those two products not work together = customers telephone = $$$ from calls. Then, make only 64 bit drivers so 32 bit users HAVE to upgrade = another 200$.
Am I right?? Anyway all this is out of the thread so,
Possible fix :
1. Remove the device from device manager and disconnect Kiaser from PC (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb456985.aspx)
2. Uninstall Windows Mobile device center.
3. Reboot and reinstall WMDC.
4. Reconnect your Kaiser and hopefully the drivers should be reloaded.
Hope I helped

Windows7 and Linux Mint question

Ok so I dabbled into some Linux and now I want to get back to windows7. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and i have the product key. the only thing I dont have is a restore disc. So my question is if I install a bought over the counter Windows disc, can I use my product key to activate it.
* HDD was completely wiped upon installing Linux Mint (No recovery partition anything)
* I have the product key
* I can get a "stock" windows 7 installer disc
any advice would be appreciated. thanks.
As long as it's the same version of Windows 7 (Home, Pro, Enterprise etc.) then you should be okay. But, if you're going to buy Windows 7 then that will come with it's own key. You won't need the old one.
Yes, actually laptops that coming with Genuine Windows is for lifetime.
That is, even if you format your HDD, you can still use your Genuine Windows with the unique product key given to you (Could be found on the laptop backside I guess)
ok so I checked the product key and it states its for Windows Home Premium. As long as i can get my hands on a Windows Home Premium installer disc and then use my product key I should be good? Even though its not a Toshiba windows installer?

Actually, you will probably find that the licence key won't work with a normal copy of Windows 7 Home Premium - they are different things. You will, almost certainly, either have to make some changes in your registry to convince Windows to let you use your code on that version of Windows, or phone Microsoft and give them a sob-story about your hard-drive having died and you having no backups.
Mind you, not taking a backup was pretty silly really - a bit like rooting your phone and flashing a custom ROM without taking a Nandroid backup first.

this is what im afraid of ;(
You'll have had a OEM version of W7 Home Premium, which is different to the retail version.
Contact Toshiba and order replacement recovery discs, or find someone else with the same model Toshiba and create recovery media from them.
Start the ordering process for the Americas:

my main problem is "Device handshake failed"

Hi folks
this is the first time for me with WP 7 i am with the Android since the G1 lol.
i got an a focus s from a friend and i said to my self , why you don't try it? its locked to at&t, so the first thing i have to do is unlocking it.
at that point the problems started!!, i checked the unlocking cost via code, the average is 30$ which is expensive for 80$ phone!!, so i choose to unlock it via fastgsm and unlocking via USB cable.
i followed the instructions and everything seems to be OK till the last step when the phone reboots to the download mode, the program shows "FAILED" i had contacted teh customer support for fastgsm and they tried to help me, with o hope, thereafter i didscovered that there is somethign wrong with the connection of teh phone to the PC.
i start to read and read and read again "noting that i am expert in android things" and finally i decieded to use the CAb sender and/or the "sharp7eighter' to update then SIM unlock.
both programs with the same error "Device handshake failed" noting that the phone is connected and shows i937 in my compute but it never ever recognized by Zune, always says "no device connected"
sorry for my bad English, but i am very sure there is something i can do to :
1-go back to stock
2-update my phone
just to connected the fastgsm program to be able to SIM unlock it at acceptabl;e price 15$.
please and thanks

Fastgsm stopped working with the focus s when the newer firmware got updated, I think it was version LE2, I know I had to pay for more expensive unlock although in theory we can achieve unlock without paying anything with gsmtools etc, but this is risky as I don't really know how, it would require some experimental work!
As for connection issues
On keypad of your phone type ##634# and click "Call" button to show Diagnosis screen.
Type *#7284# onto Diagnosis screen, select "Modem, USB Diag." For fastgsm, and "zune" for...well, zune and confirm selection
Restart and let me know how zune sync now works

OK, there are a bunch of things we are going to try
Firstly are you in a position to hard reset your device from the boot loader?
If so do it, If not turn it off instead
turn your PC off
Plug USB cable in to a different port on the back of your PC, do not use a hub, it has been known that some hubs can affect sync
Turn both pc and phone on, assuming you have used a different USB port windows will install new drivers
Load zune and try again
Sent from my arc 10HD using xda app-developers app
i didn't use the phone yet, so i have no data to lose.
for the hardrest i did it many times, from setting , about, reset your phone then turn it off, press the three buttons together (power+camera+vol down) and format.
i don't know what you mean by headrest via bootloader.
and i changed the USB port and used 3 different types of USB cables, with no hope
and the strange thing is, when i plug the phone, the zune starts automatically and shows no device connected !!!
i am very sure that the previous user for the phone manipulate wit the software, so all i am trying to do is revert to stock, and i have another question regarding the download mode, when i was using the USB method from fastgsm to SIM unlock (screenshot attached), it shows that the PC detect the phone and read all information, but when it restarts to the download mode, it "FAIL".

I think its connected as a MTP device, that probably explains it..
OK,
Im going to hazard a guess with drivers being the problem
with the device connected I want you to do in to device manager and uninstall the driver for it, make sure you click delete driver as well.
then Disconnect the device before it can start installing it again
then go to http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html and download the program at the bottom, make sure you choose correctly between x86/x64
this little program will allow you to view and delete all USB devices connected past and present. basically select the device, right click and uninstall it, you will need to run the program as admin
Have a field day and delete anything and everything that might be related to the phone, if you whack something that isn't related all you will have to do is reconnect it and it will install the drivers again so there isn't much to worry about.
try that and see if that removes what I think is a driver conflict. mind it might not be obvious what is and isn't related so best err on the side of caution and keep only those that definitely are not it!
Note it might be Samsung, or i937 or Windows phone or WP7 or more annoyingly USB composite device of which you will have many, just mind one of these will be a keyboard and mouse, if it stops just unplug and plug back in, windows will take care of the rest

WPDR tool doesn't see my device. Because no Microsoft account present?

Hello again.
Windows Phone Developer Registration tool doesn't "see" my device. I've double checked all requisites (.net framework, IpOverUsbSvc, phone listed in file explorer, screen unlocked, correct time, internet connected, etc.) The only issue I can think of is the fact that I still haven't set up a Microsoft account in the phone; but... is this reason enough for the WPDR tool to not even see the phone?
Any hint appreciated. Thanks!
That's probably the cause, yeah. You could try setting up the account to see if it works, then...
Well, I've found something interesting: when I've plugged my device to a virtual machine running win8 and the full WP8 SDK, it recognized my phone instantly. So, now we know that a device that has not been set up with a Microsoft account can be dev-unlocked.
So, definitely there's something wrong with my installation of the hacked SDK-lite. Or maybe the drivers. I have a kind of mess in my laptop because of all the previous drivers and programs for Symbian and my Nokia C7. I still find it hard to get used to the idea that Nokia is not Nokia anymore, but Windows. I have to repeat to myself twice a day: "I don't own a Nokia Lumia, but a Microsoft Lumia".
Thanks for caring, GDTD.

Well maybe the virtual Win 8 OS with WP8 SDK recognized your phone because Win 8 has the winusb drivers build in. On Windows 7, you need to install these winusb driver (you normally have a unrecognized device called Windows Phone 8 in the Device Management).
Link to the drivers : http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=winusb http://catalog.update.microsoft.com...updateid=90462af8-f533-4522-9ad1-dcc969d94832
Hmm... Well, this is strange. My device seems to be perfectly recognized by the system. Actually, every time I plug the phone in I get a popup window listing it under "devices and printers" with the correct model (RM-892 | Nokia Lumia 925). In the device manager it appears as a Nokia USB device, with no exclamation marks nor any sign of "wrong driver". Yet, the hacked SDK insists in not finding it.
On the other hand, I've tried to install the "winusb" driver you mention, but the link you provide redirects me to somewhere where there is no such driver, and I haven't been able to find a download. In any case, there are at least five copies of winusb.sys in my system...
Don't know what am I doing wrong.

You need to visit the website with Internet Explorer. Go to google type "winusb windows phone microsoft update catalog" and go to the site with "catalog.update.microsoft.com" in the URL. If you don't see the download link of the driver type "winusb windows phone" in search. There should be an unrecognized device called "Windows Phone 8" in the device manager (start menu -> My Computer -> right mouse click -> Manage -> Device Manager in left context menu) for this driver to be installed, if not I can't help you further.
Thanks Bruce. I've done what you said and was able to download winusb. It's a .rar package containing two files, winusbcompat.cat and winusbcompat.inf. Now, if I'm not abusing your patience... what do I do with them?
[EDIT] Ok, don't bother. I figured out how. Actually this solved my problem. After properly installing the winusb driver, the WP8 SDK lite by Arnold Vink recognized my phone.
Thanks to everybody who helped me "out".
Now I wonder how could I mark this thread as "solved"...
Hi,
My Nokia Lumia 925 won't respond to anything (NSU, NSU->”My phone does not startup or respond”, Nokia Care Suite->recover phone, volume down + power button,…).
Already leave it charging for several hours. Can’t have any reply from the phone.
Now the phone is kind of dead. Can start it and the only thing I see Is a QHSUSB_DLOAD (Nokia Emergency Connectivity) in PC.
I have tried many things according to internet but i can't get any success windows device recovery tool is also not detecting my phone and it is not listed in it. i have tried thor command also not working it says invalid hex file.
Please help me to recover my phone from QHSUSB_DLOAD mode.
